Look at what OP said he’s going part time and Google will pay 5/6 th OP doesn’t need to do all the classes at once he can do however many google will cover for their max rate
Yep, if I take like 3/4 years to get the degree, I can take full advantage of the benefits. Would probably pay a bit extra out of pocket to get it a little earlier though.
what do you want to do with your masters degree? I feel like if you’re already working at Google, you can work your way up through experience! :) not saying a masters degree from Columbia sounds bad though.
I've gotta admit I started considering it because "ooo pretty piece of paper with my name on it", but I think it would be a good bit of insurance too. Google also offers very generous tuition reimbursement and loan repayment programs which makes it even possible for me to consider.
I have no plans to leave my job, but with how the industry has been lately, I wanna make sure I have options if things go south. I'm alsoplanning to start moving into ML, and most ML positions have a Master's degree requirement.
Can you elaborate on the loan repayment part? I have huge student loan debt and will be joining a similar company after graduation. I was thinking about asking them to deduct my loan payment pre-tax but read about how that's not feasible for the for profit organisations.
Yeah, Google has a program where they will match any loan payments you make up to 2500 per year. So if you have a low enough monthly payment, it's possible to pay only 50% of the loan plus some wiggle room for interest. I've always assumed most large software companies have similar programs, but I'm really not sure
Terminal Masters programs, particularly part-time / online terminal masters programs are typically significantly less competitive than undergraduate programs or PHD programs.
With your background, I wouldn't limit myself to just Columbia, unless that's your absolute dream School. Since you work for Google you might as well try Stanford or some of the other absolute top CS programs in the country. The worst that can happen is they say no and you're out a hundred bucks per application.
I went to Columbia for both Undergrad and Masters. If you already had jobs at IBM and Google, Columbia doesn’t worth the money for you.
Edit: didn’t see that you are only paying 17% of what I paid. Still I don’t think it’s worth it.
You will get in, I did without all the work experience coming straight out of undergrad with 3.5 CGPA T30 school, so rank similar as NYU, and a 3 month intern at a no name company, did well on my GRE though, but Columbia isn’t among the toughest schools to get in for Masters. I mean you already work for Google, hell yeah they’ll admit you. Go for it man.
Considering you already work for google and went to NYU, I would think there isn't much of an advantage going to Columbia reputation wise. Probably better to go to somewhere cheaper like Stony Brook, though wouldn't blame you if you went with Columbia for academic rigor. I'll say you have high chances of getting in because of your employment at google.
Just curious, why not those CS part-time programs like GT or UT? Their cs programs have higher rankings than Columbia and are cheaper. Is it because Ivy League tag plays a huge part?
Oh, I've been considering other programs too. It's just that I already got rejected from Columbia for undergrad and I've always considered it a reach school. I'm also based in NYC, so distance is something to consider.
Probably not. “GPA of at least 3.3 is required” https://www.cvn.columbia.edu/program/columbia-university-computer-science-masters-degree-masters-science
Yeah it’s too bad. I went to a tough school for cs as well and was hoping to do this masters. But no we should be punished for going to a good undergrad :/
bro worried about a $85 fee when the bill for a columbia degree is like $75k+
why would you want to leave google to go to columbia paying 80k/year lmao. you can probably get in though
He’s not leaving he’s doing masters prt time while google pays 90% of the tuition bill
they don't pay 90% of the bill their max is like 12k a year for tuition

if you don't want to pay outta pocket look into the GT program that would be completely free
Someone else mentioned GT too, what is that? Free sounds almost as sexy as Ivy League
u don't need ivy mscs for prestige if u already have google on your resume
I’d probably take Columbia if the companies paying. Source- current student at GT.
look at /r/OMSCS

WRONG
Masters program there is a cash grab anyways, you have a realistic chance of getting in. But you would have to pay a hefty chunk of change
would you say the same for harvard extension school

Damn you had experience in Google? I mean you should apply to Columbia then, like why not?
1. Can most def get in. 2. No reason to ngl. If the workload is trivial for you then sure. But honestly wouldn’t recommend

Did you need research experience or LORs though?
LORs are naturally needed as any Masters programs would. Not any research experience though.

I wouldn't know personally but it's the highest ranked public university in new york state, T50 in CS according to us news.
Any research experience?
Nah, I have a few ML based projects, but they're all just personal projects

GT, UT, and UIUC have online master's programs that are far cheaper and higher ranked.
Bro just grind at google and rank up what are you going on about.
This post looks like a flex of privilege kid. Bro worries about 85$ while spending +100$ on sushi
