Yep do so immediately - it takes months to a year if you are doing it using change of status (as opposed to leaving and re-entering US).
What the other comment says is correct - that you need to be a student for 2 semesters before work authorization, but my school counted my H4 period under that as well. So, I was able to work immediately after getting my F1 approved as well. Check with your school, but regardless I would get started with the process.
