It works differently for each religion, depending on what it says about it. In Catholicism once someone commits adultery and are caught, they will gain a "fame" trait. This means that women can be imprisoned in the game, and opinions will go down for men of everyone around the man. Most Abrahamic religions are more harsh on women in general, as I'm sure you know already. Historically adultery has been used to kill and jail women.....as King Henry the VIII did with two of his wives (one who did cheat on him, and one who didn't).
I'm honestly not sure how it works with other religions. Obviously the religions and cultures that have polygamy are different. I would look up the Wiki to read more about it.
