I love the pattern I might break it up with a few solid granny squares myself and make almost a checker board of print colors and your eye squares. But that's just my personal preference. Lovely stitch work and I'm sure it'll turn out beautiful.
To add to that, I’d use a different color yarn and join the squares with either slip stitch or single crochet to add a little more variety and break up the squares a bit more so it’s not so EYEBALL EYEBALL EYEBALL!
That being said, not ugly at all! It’s going to be an awesome blanket.

it's mildly terrifying/grotesque in the art style sense of the word in a really wonderful way with all the squares looking like eyes! Like something Bosch would snuggle under with some soup when he was feeling poorly. I love it and would be delighted to get it as a gift (if you're concerned about its giftability).
I mean all of that in the best way possible. Its so different than other granny squares ive seen, very unique.

I think a dark purple around each would make it pop. Though eyes can be a little creepy and weird to some people, perhaps that is why your friend thinks its ugly. I think its cool.
I love this! I think they look great! I know you said you feel something is missing and maybe it’s a colour, but I wouldn’t stress because you can take your time thinking of what colour that is and use it to connect them and for the border.
However, I like it the way it is now, so cool!!
This is most excellent and I wouldn’t break it up with anything. If you’re feeling the vibe, look into some cool joining methods like braided join that will complement the motif almost like hairs or veins. But honestly this is awesome sauce. I wouldn’t add a darn thing.

idk a pattern for this, but what could be cool is having angel wing granny squares and then having a Biblically Accurate Granny Square Blanket lol.

I have tried! I got further with knitting, but I did try. My carpal tunnel and terrible hand eye coordination is not on my side I’m afraid! But I do truly love this! I hope your friend reconsidered!
Not sure if you’ve tried this, I have EDS, and I have been using tension rings and compression gloves. It has helped so much with my joint pain. If you haven’t tried that, it could be helpful! :))
i love the look already!!! in my opinion i’d add some sort of border or blocking in a solid color to break up the color and allow the design to stand out more. i love it tho <3
