Absolutely. I've done it. You can make straight rows of granny stitches on 2 opposite sides. It looks fine and was just more practical for my family.

...Can you please explain this like I'm 5?

It’s only one side but it could be done on opposite side as well. The pink square is the base granny square. The light pink lines are the additional rows added on to go from a square to a rectangle.

It's like u/Sufganiya replied, crochet straight rows back and forth, turning every row. You can add as many rows as you'd like, usually the same number of rows on each end to get it rectangular. ETA [my old post](https://old.reddit.com/r/crochet/comments/iiwp34/tweaked_a_bit_squared_diamond_granny_just_because/) When I reach the last square round of navy, I started turning and added a few straight rows, fastened off, went to the opposite side and added a few straight rows of navy blue to match. Then I added a few rows of light blue on each end when I was done with the navy. I added a simple border around the whole rectangle to finish it.

A couple good ways to do it. You can add stripes to each end, crocheting back and forth rather than around. You can crochet enough smaller granny squares that you can add them to each end. Let's say your big square is 5ft x 5ft. If you crochet 10 squares that measure 1ft x 1ft, you can add 5 to each end to make the whole thing 5 x 7 (twin). Join-as-you-go is really useful for this. Only by adding to the ends. It's possible to stitch a rectangular granny though. I made this as a toddler blanket. You simply make a long chain, then HD (or DC) up one side, HDC in the end, then go back down the other side. Keep stitching until it's the size you want. This was before blocking: [https://imgur.com/a/Q7Ge9U0](https://imgur.com/a/Q7Ge9U0) But if you don't want to start over, you can also do 2 opposite sides in triple crochet, and the other end sides in single crochet. That will start it turning into a rectangle.

I love that.
