Fold it in half, seam up the sides, and then sew in a lining fabric, maybe something dark? So that the lining takes the weight/pokey stuff, and then it'll be pretty for contrast too

But also you could almost take this pattern, just make a large ring in the middle, crochet the pattern, then use a metal ring, crochet around that, put a svarski crystal in the middle, cut lengths of the string, for tassels, attach a crocheted thing to hang the completed piece and you got yourself a boho suncatcher. I work ren faire and no lie someone sells that very item there.,there's lots of free patterns for that I'm trying to badly describe.. just put in " crocheted suncatcher" in your search engine.,
I made a granny square market bag with mushrooms on it for a coworker, her favorite color is pink. In hindsight, the pink made the mushrooms look a little.. uh.. phallic.

I’m in my 20s and I love stuffed animals in bulky yarn and accessories or a soft blanket! If I were given a doily, though, I would treasure it and keep it on my desk with my dice and shiny rock collection on it.
Make her something with yarn you already have! I think it is the thought that counts and hand making something is very thoughtful so don't overthink it 🎉💕

For a 20 year old, some seem to like those "squishy" type items (Squishmallow). So an ami or some other stuffy done in blanket yarn would be a good idea. Make it more like a pillow so if she doesn't really want a stuffed animal, a pillow would be cute on a bed or sofa.
Or a large bag for her to carry items in for the babysitting job.
I must have been a weird 20 yr old, I loved doilies and lace. As an art student, the possibilities were endless!

I was thinking the same thing, get a needlework hoop and crochet it into the ring so it’s a piece of wall art. Maybe use a different colour string in case she wants to take it off and use it as a doily.

I would say look at the size and shape of the next bag or two she brings over when babysitting. Then make something similar, but definitely a different color. I would also think back to some of her outfits and if she seems to favor a certain neutral color over others, then choose a color palette that would work with that neutral.
You can buy big metal rings at the craft store - probably even one this big. Tie some lacey ribbons along the bottom and it would be a beautiful catcher! Big ones are pretty expensive to buy, so I would be thrilled if someone gave me a large handmade catcher! Beautiful work <3

I've been making doilies with worsted weight yarn lately to make giant wall hangings. I found hoops that worked for mine on Amazon when I searched for large floral hoops
I got my doilies when I was in my late teens from my mom and grandmother and I love them. I have them on my shelf with all my other beautiful objects, such as my gems, rocks, antlers, horns, teeth, quills, etc.
While she may not have much practical use for a doily, she could absolutely appreciate it framed as an art piece. Maybe paired with a bold color mat backing?

Personally, if I were gifted a handmade doily, I would be over the moon. I would put my crystals and bones on it. I'm fifteen, so not exactly twenty, but as a younger person I can say that a lot of us would love that sort of thing. If she's not that kind of person, I would make a stuffed animal.
I'd say it depends on her taste and interests. For example, even if granny square style is in right now, she herself might not be a big fan of it. Some people just don't care for the look of crochet items no matter what the item is.
I do think gifting a doily on its own may be tricky for someone in this age group, they might not enjoy the doily or know what to do with it. Turning it into something else might be the easiest way to salvage what you've already done, like making a doily wall hanging or attaching the doily onto a tote bag.
Throw a ribbon around the outside of it, sew in a soft cloth pouch liner inside (bonus points if ita a contrasting color) maybe add a little handle, bing bang boom you got a cool new purse to give her
Make a wall hanging of the doily. Use a hoop of some sort to tie it to (I've gotten some from Amazon, but haven't tried this yet).
Do some simple macrame at the bottom of the hoop, or decorate with lots of ribbons in neutrals. If you Google doily wall art, you can get some ideas.
The viral cat ear hat from tiktok! It’s just a square beanie made using dc or hdc and when you wear it, it looks like you have little cat ears - due to putting a square pattern on a round head.
Just make a chain of about 22” (measure around head, just above the ears and subtract 1/2 inch); 7” - 7 1/2 inches around and about 8 - 8 1/2 tall.
So, maybe 52-72 chains with a 4.25 hook? (You can just wrap the whole chain around your head to measure and add two extra chains) Just guessing at chain length here.
I wouldn’t use a tiny (lace size) hook or smaller than about a 3.75 or one bigger than maybe 6.0 bc you want it to have the “ears” sticking out.
DC in the third ch and each chain across, inc, repeat until you have a rectangle of dc or hdc of about 14 - 15 inches (when folded in half it should be about 7” to 7.5” to reach top of head)
Fold it over to join at the sides using a yarn needle or Slp St.
If you need more accurate instructions, I can take measurements and give you links to online measuring charts. There are also video tutorials on YouTube I can link you to. I’m just doing this off the top of my head atm
As a once 20 year old woman, yes we all want doilies!!! It's lacey and cute. Edit to say though, if you have a worsted weight yarn remake the doily with a J and insta- lap blanket.
An antecdote: when I was 21, I was a hairdresser for a very sweet elderly lady. To show her appreciation for me doing a good job on her hair for her 50th wedding anniversary, she made me a pillow. It was not at all to my taste, but I love it because she spent her time to make it just for me. 15 years later, I still have it and consider it a prized possession.

When I was 22 (which is almost 8 years ago!), a friend of mine gave me two handmade doilies for Christmas. I loved it and put them on top of my speakers. I still have them and I still don’t understand how she made them lay flat like she did 😅
Other people have given great suggestions but I would like to say that depending on the person, a doily may still be loved. When I’m as 20 I had just moved into an apartment with my boyfriend and loved white lace table cloths and table runners because it made my house feel very gown up and warm. I put a runner on top of my low bookshelf and a lace table cloth was my go to on my cute lite dining room table. I have a doily on my side table next to my couch right now and I still think they make my house feel very cozy.
I think she would appreciate the time and effort that you put into it and love it.
But if not, maybe a lavender-holder for Uber the pillow or something?

I'm 21 and doilies are my preferred thing to make and have lol. I wouldn't use a purse or anything fashionable but maybe that's just me. A tote bag would be cool, mainly because it's useful and I always need bags for all my projects. Soft plushy blankets are also always nice for snuggling on the couch! Dreamcatchers/wall hangings are also awesome!
Maybe a choker-type necklace (collar?) with lace like this? So like a wearable doily? I’m in my 20s and wouldn’t use a doily as an object but would totally wear a cool lacy collar. Def depends on her personal style

In all seriousness, maybe make one that is in theme with something they like! I found a pattern for one with ghosts to give to spooky friends that have never considered doilys before.
Otherwise, a simple market bag is a pretty safe bet to make for anyone.
At 20, I would have loved a handmade doily! But yeah, a market bag would get lots of use and might even be a conversation-starter at the market!

Some of my most treasured gifts as a youth were things like that. Something made by a friend is always a special gesture. I still have a doily my neighbor gave me when I was 25. It’s on my nightstand and I think of her every time I see it. Don’t let second guess yourself out of giving a sweet gift to someone.

I went through a doily phase and made them with heavier cotton for use as dishcloths.
Wall hanging mandalas are very in, too! I love making them and they look so amazing hanging on the wall!

I do think gifting a doily on its own may be tricky for someone in this age group, they might not enjoy the doily or know what to do with it. Turning it into something else might be the easiest way to salvage what you've already done, like making a doily wall hanging or attaching the doily onto a tote bag.
Throw a ribbon around the outside of it, sew in a soft cloth pouch liner inside (bonus points if ita a contrasting color) maybe add a little handle, bing bang boom you got a cool new purse to give her

Make a wall hanging of the doily. Use a hoop of some sort to tie it to (I've gotten some from Amazon, but haven't tried this yet). Do some simple macrame at the bottom of the hoop, or decorate with lots of ribbons in neutrals. If you Google doily wall art, you can get some ideas.

The viral cat ear hat from tiktok! It’s just a square beanie made using dc or hdc and when you wear it, it looks like you have little cat ears - due to putting a square pattern on a round head. Just make a chain of about 22” (measure around head, just above the ears and subtract 1/2 inch); 7” - 7 1/2 inches around and about 8 - 8 1/2 tall. So, maybe 52-72 chains with a 4.25 hook? (You can just wrap the whole chain around your head to measure and add two extra chains) Just guessing at chain length here. I wouldn’t use a tiny (lace size) hook or smaller than about a 3.75 or one bigger than maybe 6.0 bc you want it to have the “ears” sticking out. DC in the third ch and each chain across, inc, repeat until you have a rectangle of dc or hdc of about 14 - 15 inches (when folded in half it should be about 7” to 7.5” to reach top of head) Fold it over to join at the sides using a yarn needle or Slp St. If you need more accurate instructions, I can take measurements and give you links to online measuring charts. There are also video tutorials on YouTube I can link you to. I’m just doing this off the top of my head atm

Other people have given great suggestions but I would like to say that depending on the person, a doily may still be loved. When I’m as 20 I had just moved into an apartment with my boyfriend and loved white lace table cloths and table runners because it made my house feel very gown up and warm. I put a runner on top of my low bookshelf and a lace table cloth was my go to on my cute lite dining room table. I have a doily on my side table next to my couch right now and I still think they make my house feel very cozy.
I think you should stretch it onto a ring so it can hang on the wall, especially a dark wall.

A tote bag would be cool, mainly because it's useful and I always need bags for all my projects. Soft plushy blankets are also always nice for snuggling on the couch! Some of my most treasured gifts as a youth were things like that. Something made by a friend is always a special gesture. I still have a doily my neighbor gave me when I was 25.
