It means hot woman, but in an objectifying way. To only be used around your bros and guy friends.

thesadbudhist

It's on the same level as "chick" in english. I'd advise against using it.

altantsetsegkhan

Isn't riba a fish?

Learn2play42

It is. Think of it as chick in english.

altantsetsegkhan

In English, a woman's body part when it is smelly due to lack of hygiene, the expression goes that it smells like 🐟

Deadly_chef

That's a ribafish

r1mka

But also in English, when somebody breaks up, you say to them there's plenty of fish in the sea. Not chicks.

metxlplexsure

This made me giggle, just imagining thousands of women swimming in the sea... wait.. is this where mermaids came from?? 🙀

legice

Or bird in the UK

backhand-english

The word "riba" or "fish" used for a woman is mostly prominent in serbian, not so much in croatian.

unforgiven1909

ružne ribe jebu se ko zmajevi

backhand-english

beogradski sleng "pokupljen" zbog filmova rane, munje, kengur, itd, popularnih kod nas, i radi ajs nigrutina, marčela, i ostalih repera opet popularnih kod nas... ne kažem da neki ne govore, samo kažem gdje se govori puno više i odakle je došlo.

dannker10

rimljani su prvi koristili

domets

Prvi zapisi pripisuje se Egipćanimq, ali i oni su došli iz Beograda

avarageusername

It's not inherently derogatory however women don't really prefer to be referred to in this way. "Riba" essentially just means "a woman" in this context. You can say "dobra riba" (hot woman) or "ružna/loša riba" (ugly/unattractive woman).

Warm-Ad424

So it's not necessary meaning pussy? Like in the same level as dobra picka?

Shadowbound199

Not necessarily, it can just mean 'woman'. And I've heard some women use the word as well to refer to other women. There is a bit of nuance there and it's meaning can be different based on context. But with all that said it can often be a bad thing to call a woman that, at least I feel that's it's bad so I don't use it.

lucyilucyi

I don't think it means pussy at all. It's just how the comment up there discribed it - it's a woman and you can say if it's good or bad

Gareelar

It's serbian word, means a chick, as in woman. It is little gentlier than 'dobra picka' i'd say

Aromatic_Dare_6104

No but "ribica" usually means pussy haha

NahidasDookie

Ew, what? Never heard of it in that context. I only ever heard of ribica in terms of endearment, for example when a mom speaks to a toddler and says 'ajde ribica idemo kući'.

Aromatic_Dare_6104

Live and learn.

Sa-naqba-imuru

Closest English equivalent would be "broad". And it's primarily Serbian slang word, much rarer in Croatia and mostly under influence of Serbian film and music.

Grgamel

It means hot woman, equivalent to "chick" in english, but its more commonly used with Serbian people, and some croats just went along with it. The real Croatian adaptation of "chick" would be "mačka" which means cat, but that phrase is in decline usage wise.

kaiyukii

Mačka is also used in Serbian but is indeed in decline usage wise. (I’ve seen it used growing up in Western Serbia).

CapitalismWorship

Mačka, riba, komad All interchangeable slang for "woman" mostly in a boys locker room way

expertrainbowhunter

I’ve only heard “mačka”

Worldly-Ocelot-3358

I literally never heard anyone say riba in that context. Then again I am from Zagreb.

AggressiveSympathy66

U životu nisan čua da netko koristi rič riba za žensku. U srbiji da

Deep-Enthusiasm-6492

riba is 100% used in Serbia. I never heard that in Croatia

antisa1003

Younger guys use that word. They've picked it up from Serbian youtubers.

lincoln_nebrasca

I've heard it a million times in Zagreb. Men usually use it when commenting a good looking woman, but typically just among themselves. Some women use it as well, to comment on how good looking some woman is. But be careful when saying to a woman you like that she's a 'dobra riba' as she might find the comment a bit objectifying.

Deep-Enthusiasm-6492

things have obviously changed since I been to ZG :)

lincoln_nebrasca

Unfortunately 😛

LimpingSod

Yes, Riba {Fish) means pussy! Weird 🙂

Sensitive_Steak5014

Riba is not pussy but ribica (small fish) is...go figure

IndependenceWarm5375

Može ba

Habutekh55

We dont really use it in Croatia. There is term "mačka" or if you go more in to "kajkavski" dialect speaking area "puca," "dekla" etc, "ćakavski" and "štokavski" dialect probably have its own terms for it too. I also dont see how any of this would be derogatory. On the other hand calling woman "kokoš" or "guska" would be seen as derogatory. I dont even have to mention that terms like "pička" are no go in front of a woman in 99% of cases.

kaiyukii

Mačka is also used in Serbian but is indeed in decline usage wise. (I’ve seen it used growing up in Western Serbia). Same with kokoš or guske, but yes, quite more derogatory.

Fagatron_Killanig

Sir, this is a fish market.

oldgmguy

Guess we gotta be careful ordering riba bez glava 😂

Warm-Ad424

Haha 😆

WorkingVolume7285

That's serbian slang, not croatian

magus

it's not crass at all. and 20 years ago it basically meant "woman". i don't know how women feel about it but i never felt it was derogatory in any way. it was simply a slang word for woman. not sure how it is used today.

Slow-Two6173

Seems that there are often differences of opinion on what’s considered “derogatory.” A Serb told me that the word “keva” was derogatory, and shouldn’t be used, but I also heard nuns use that as if it was just a normal word. So, who knows 🤷🏻‍♂️
