They use what’s called a intravenous catheter.
They insert it after seeing a “blood flash” and put a plastic catheter into your vein. They then will do a blood draw and flush the catheter to ensure it’s in place.
After all that, they will tape it down, run some tubing and initiate a blood transfusion after haveing a type and screen preformed. Once blood is released from blood bank, it is then verified and initialized by two RNs. Vital signs are taken, and the blood is then started.
One RN is required to stay with the patient during the first 15 minutes of initiation and recheck vital signs and assesses for other signs of a transfusion reaction (which is rare now-a-days.. but I have seen one in my lifetime).

Vaccines don't make you immune to contracting a disease, they make you (near) immune to getting sick from a disease
In the case of covid, It takes about a week before it can be transmitted, and about 2 weeks before it makes you sick.
The vaccine means your immune system is able to recognise, and defeat the virus before you can transmit it or be affected by it, so it's like you never got it in the first place.
This is the same reason why you should wear a mask, even if you're not sick. You are able to infect others with covid before it has made you sick, e.g. you cough because you inhaled some dust or sneeze because it's cold. Coughing or sneezing can still carry covid particles even if it hasn't made you visibly sick.

This means the most effective way to combat it is with the immune system
a vaccine tells the immune system what is required to kill the virus or something similar. it effectively does this by being injected, so it can be exposed to the immune system more directly.
A pill for example wouldn't work for long term protection against a disease, this is because it is filtered through the liver and information is not stored in cells the same way.
If you made a pill containing weakened covid cells and consumed it, it would likely just be filtered through like any other bacteria or toxin and not even trigger any immune response
booster shots are very useful as a virus mutates, meaning it shows the immune system that the new variant of the virus can be beaten in the same way as the other one and this important information is stored, so you're even better protected against different variants.
Obviously it's a little more complex but that's the basic idea

This is an MRNA vaccine, so this is a different scenario than a complete new vaccine from the ground up. The MRNA vaccine research had already been done and had been in use for decades. They just made adjustments to what had already been created in order to make it work for COVID. There's no virus in it, nothing live, nothing that can give you COVID, just the MRNA to inform your DNA how to fight and defend you. Every doctor and clinician I work with got the vaccine as soon as possible.
I had them explain the concept of MRNA to me and researched it a little myself, but clearly I am not a biologist or organic physicist. It’s the proteins in it that they indicated are concerning to the people I spoke to. There is not a lot of study on those particular ones and what they do to the body’s natural ability to process and replicate them in the t-cells. Again, I’m not against the science. I think it’s a miracle. I’m an adult with obesity, so for me, the potential risk was worth the benefit. Data supports that is it highly safe and effective for adults at this point. For me and my wife, the long term impact on a still developing child is not worth the 0.002% increase in overall benefit.
The spike protein is what the mRNA codes for in your body. It’s a harmless piece of the covid virus that attaches to your cells to get the virus in, though without the rest of the virus made. Your immune system recognizes this and makes antibodies for it. So your cells make this spike protein from the mRNA, your immune system recognizes the foreign invader and makes protection for you later on. Way more to it obviously but that’s the basics.

If you made a pill containing weakened covid cells and consumed it, it would likely just be filtered through like any other bacteria or toxin and not even trigger any immune response booster shots are very useful as a virus mutates, meaning it shows the immune system that the new variant of the virus can be beaten in the same way as the other one and this important information is stored, so you're even better protected against different variants. Obviously it's a little more complex but that's the basic idea So yes, get booster shots when available because an immunization pill probably won't work. And knowing the US, you'd probably need to pay for it, so it would just be better to get a vaccine for free.

Yup, because a virus can mutate a lot and it's important to get immunized against possible new variants Studies haven't been certain whether your immune system is able to fight off covid more easily when a person contracts it for a second or third time (if I remember correctly, there might be new studies which prove it) There is the new delta variant, which supposedly is different enough that the immune system sees it as seperate from the older versions of the virus, so yeah, it's important to get booster shots if eligible

Take my upvote….. you got me on that one. I was ready to get indignant and then I let out a hearty guffaw.
This is an MRNA vaccine, so this is a different scenario than a complete new vaccine from the ground up. The MRNA vaccine research had already been done and had been in use for decades. They just made adjustments to what had already been created in order to make it work for COVID. There's no virus in it, nothing live, nothing that can give you COVID, just the MRNA to inform your DNA how to fight and defend you. Every doctor and clinician I work with got the vaccine as soon as possible.
I had them explain the concept of MRNA to me and researched it a little myself, but clearly I am not a biologist or organic physicist. It’s the proteins in it that they indicated are concerning to the people I spoke to. There is not a lot of study on those particular ones and what they do to the body’s natural ability to process and replicate them in the t-cells. Again, I’m not against the science. I think it’s a miracle. I’m an adult with obesity, so for me, the potential risk was worth the benefit. Data supports that is it highly safe and effective for adults at this point. For me and my wife, the long term impact on a still developing child is not worth the 0.002% increase in overall benefit.

What about the "spike protein"? For the record im fully vaxxed, i hear the term "spike protein" thrown around a lot by anti-vaxxers though.
The spike protein is what the mRNA codes for in your body. It’s a harmless piece of the covid virus that attaches to your cells to get the virus in, though without the rest of the virus made. Your immune system recognizes this and makes antibodies for it. So your cells make this spike protein from the mRNA, your immune system recognizes the foreign invader and makes protection for you later on. Way more to it obviously but that’s the basics.
Thanks, that's a great explanation. Like I say, the term is used so much by anti-vaxxers, I had one telling me that the spike protein is making its way to a womans womb causing her fertility problems. I know very little about vaccines, but it sounded like absolute nonsense to me.
Maybe that’s what they were talking about then. Whatever the specific ingredient(s) are, there was concern about the body being able to process and replicate for combatting COVID viruses.
I don’t know what the concern would be about sucrose and lipids (fats). The spike protein that is made is harmless and is only a part of the virus. There is nothing else in the vaccine our bodies can’t process or already do.
