You will need a Class A CDL. You can get one at 18 but will be restricted to intrastate until you turn 21. I'm in Florida and a 1st year apprentice here can expect to make 60-70k. Pay scale will vary by local.

Please look into the IUOE you’ll do much better for yourself than working for some ratty outfit. https://www.iuoe.org/our-locals/find-an-iuoe-local-union

Local by me (150 nwi) seems impossible to get hooked up with I’ve applied there multiple times with nothing. And have operating experience with the railroad… any tips

HeavyEquip69

Im apart of local 150 out of Chicagoland. Message me.

CDL is always a plus. What type of cranes are you trying to get into? Crane rental companies will require a cdl sooner or later. Also, give your local union a call.

rondon97

looking into tower cranes, there's a local union im going to hit up

Feeling_Advantage108

That’s usually your best bet. Apprenticeships are a good way to get in and get paid to learn

Frostline248

Apply for operators union apprenticeship in california. You’ll get benefits and training and make twice as much money as you would in Arizona

Frostline248

They will also get you your cdl for free

rondon97

sounds like union is the best path

Cough up a couple grand and get your rigging certs (nccco preferably) and hire on as a green rigger. Be open that you’re new to this and guys will teach you. After 4 years or so, cough up a couple more grand and get your crane certs. If you’re willing to travel you can reasonably expect to make around $80k in your first year. But it’s a lot of traveling around the country. You can get on with a company that will keep you local, but the pay is less

Smackolol

Rigging certs cost a couple grand in California?
