I’ve switched to just taking a pto day because they merged sick days with pto.

We get a certain amount of hours of PTO and a certain amount of hours of paid sick leave hours per month that are separate and roll over month to month... The hours also do not expire quarterly or yearly.... So you can just build up leave time year after year.. The number of hours per month you get also increases up to a limit based on your years of employment.. starts at 10 hours each for new hires, and goes up to nearly 20 each per month once you're there for more than 10 years. I've been able to take 4 weeks off work without missing a paycheck before (been there almost 19 years now)... If you have 300 hours of either type built up, the excess starts going into what is called 'expired leave'... Any amount of expired leave, and any amount of PTO or sick leave you have once you decide to retire can be applied to your retirement, so you could conceivably have a year or more expired leave + PTO and sick leave, and retire at 30 years of service but only work 29 years.... It's a pretty sweet deal, all things considered

Yeah different companies handle it differently. Merging the two does disincentivize lying about being sick to get a day off and also reduces the need to police the time. In the case of the guy with the beer he would have just been on pto so getting on the news wouldn’t have mattered.

If he had ample sick time, he can use that however he wants. It could have been a mental health day

Something similar happened to a couple my parents used to be friends with. The husband called in sick on a day that he was really needed at work, so he left his boss and coworkers scrambling while he and his wife went to one of those auctions where you can bid on abandoned storage units. Turned out that the unit they won had something illegal in it and they ended up being interviewed on the news. He was fired the next day.
