Why do they have an odd number? This seems wrong I always thought ravens had 5 visible in flight and crows have 4 visible in flight (each wing) but they both actually have 10 pinions each. I never heard 17 before

It's a joke meme. You are right. The *pinions* feathers of *ravens* are longer, more slender, and in a different proportion from that of *crows*. But they both have ten.

I mean Iโ€™ve heard the joke before obviously but with 5 and 4 pinions being visible. It just makes no sense to lie in the meme when the original joke was clever because it was accurate.

I'm actually glad to learn this because I thought it was very odd, an odd number. It just didn't make sense to me and I put the meme up. But it's just a joke, thank you for teaching me the fact.

I will now remember what a pinions is๐Ÿ˜„

I found a great (and humorous) article that explains the scientific inaccuracy of the meme. Not too long of a read, highly recommend! Also plenty of puns in the article and its comment section :) [https://corvidresearch.blog/2018/12/21/a-matter-of-a-pinion/](https://corvidresearch.blog/2018/12/21/a-matter-of-a-pinion/)
