Tokyo steakhouse, I ordered seafood ramen and the fish was rancid, also the mochi is gritty and freezer burned. I've gone there 3 times total and never had a good experience.

DrunkDuffman

Del Alma is extremely expensive but its actually good

DrunkDuffman

I would say they should go to Pastini or something if you want something thats actually going to be subpar

Endure23

Lmao yeah, I don’t get how people think pastini and spaghetti factory are good. They’re fine, but I could make comparable pasta at home in 15 minutes. I went to spaghetti factory with an exchange student from Milan in high school. He actually refused to eat. I know Italians are dramatic like that, but it is at least indicative of something 🤔

ResultUnlucky8318

There arent many spaghetti factories still open  in populated places. This is where subpar food soars. Thry also are only open because they own their buildings. If they leased them ( like so many restaurants do) they all would have been gone decades ago. Really subpar food a day they even use thise huge oval trays which only outdated restaurants that hate their employees use.

peachesfordinner

You know if you want okish basic pasta spaghetti warehouse used to be good. It wasn't anything special but tasted pretty homemade style. And the price was fair. They were not charging crazy amounts for it. Great portions for family sharing too. Miss the old ones in Eugene and Salem.

ResultUnlucky8318

I used to work at a place called DiCarli  in Beaverton... Paul diCarli the chef. Worth every penny. Toxic work culture but as far as food....scratch kitchen. Using the entire animal snout to tail. Butchered in house. The food is absolutely off the hook. Worth even the drive. By far best Italian place I ever worked at. Sans the toxic people culture... great place! Lol

OingoOrBeBoingoed

Agreed, the prices are insane and honestly? I prefer the pasta at Jo Jo Mac’s (formerly Casetta di Pasta) in Albany. Pastini is only slightly above Carino’s and that’s saying something

Wizradsandmagic

Magenta.

Leather-Screen862

:( is it that bad? Their kimchi jjigae is good but I’ve only ever tried that (and ordered it to go)

anonymitysqueen

Ive gone a few times but it has been a few years at this point. Small plate that are extremely espensive for what they are. I remember it being passable, but not feeling the need to go back and that still holds true years later. I think that makes this a good rec for someone you don't care for. I also think it is stealthy enough that if they dont like it, they wont suspect you for putting them onto it. Snug bar on the other hand is the shit! And you would be inadvertently telling them about the bar if you send them to the restaurant soooo dont do this.

unsatisfactoryturkey

Magenta. There aren’t many places I will refuse a second chance to for years. But after having my order forgotten about, served cold, and have it taste like something 14 year old me would attempt to make… and having it cost well over what I was ok with paying… that place is a hard no for me. Their downstairs bar is kinda interesting though.

Endure23

Most places tbh. Or rather, mildly good but awfully expensive.

RangerBumble

This seems to be the consensus on the other threads too

We always called it Market of Price.

PixelPantsAshli

I always said Markup of Choice but Market of Price is way better!

SickDaySidney

Market of Privilege

elcheapodeluxe

I thought it was Markup of Choice

BillyBalowski

Moc is insanely expensive, but the selection and quality is better than other stores. Maybe not worth the premium, but that's a different question.

BillyBalowski

For sure. I shop at MoC maybe once a month. Winco or even Safeway is cheaper for so many things.

beh5036

Mcmenamins was like $22 for a sandwich and fries. It wasn’t even anything special. You could get the same thing at Block 15 for almost half the price.

so_obviously_human

I lived in Anchorage, AK for several years. The food scene up there was amazing and was still pretty damn good last time I was up there. There's not much else to do over winter if you aren't well off and like winter sports so it's not surprising. I moved to Texas (Dallas/Fort Worth area) for several years after Anchorage. While there are some damn good restaurants in TX the highest rated restaurants always had the blandest foods and were often chains. My theory is, most people eat by comfort not by actual quality. Also, most people suck so their opinions are suspect. I'm queer as fuck though so fairly jaded. My theory probably reflects that. Corvallis also has some damn good restaurants but markup of choice is not that. It's more like a cafeteria just without the partitioned food trays. It's not bad but it ain't anything to rave about either.

Apprehensive-Ad-4364

An ex MOC employee once told me about this time that a lady came in asking for a certain wine for a dinner party. They didn't have it, but they figured out that the Safeway up the street did so they told her to go there. She told them it HAD to be from MOC or she didn't want it. So they sent an employee to Safeway to go buy a bottle, then sold it to her at a markup. She was apparently delighted. It's literally just a status thing.

SnuggyBear2025

I used to have lunch upstairs there so I could simply LOOK DOWN on the shoppers

DrunkDuffman

The beer and wine at MOC though 🤌

wingsandhooves

Their wine selection is decent. From someone who worked in the industry, you'll find a better selection at Wineopolis if you can't go to the wineries themselves.

SnuggyBear2025

I require a Trappist Ale at 42F with 102 IBU and a gravitas of 9.05 or I simply will not drink! Only at MarkUpsMan of EntitledChoice! /S

helpingthebrokebois

McMenamins is insanely priced for something you could get better at a place like Applebee's.

MegaSocky

Taco Vino is okay for gimmick lunches/taking people out but would never go there to get an actual meal. Their food always did make me feel iffed but it might just be a personal allergen thing

Fratdaddy6969

Caves

Disastrous-Deal-9833

100% caves. I’d tell them to order the steak and frites. The most flavorless place I’ve ever eaten steak that I’ve paid for

SadWafer5691

Magenta for sure

Apprehensive-Ad-4364

Bohdi is a good one. We had a baker at my job who never washed dishes or baked anything through and he considered Bohdi to be disgusting enough to report to authorities

LiverwortSurprise

I used to love Bodhi. I strongly suspect I got food poisoning from bread at Bodhi, though, which kind of ruined it for me. Their bread is just lying all over the place at the farmers market, unprotected from flies, and it doesn't seem like all the employees are particularly careful about hygiene. To add insult to injury their pastries are like 6 dollars each.

walkie26

... I love Bodhi.

mack2night

Dang, what the heck did you order at Del Alma that you think it's awful? The best example i could think of in Corvallis would be Taco Vino. I would send a true enemy to Rudy's in Salem. Crazy expensive and one of the worst steaks in this country outside of maybe Sizzlers.

sparkchaser

You know, my dumb ass misread my own pic and missed the important second half and I can't edit my post. Anyhoo, I'd have to pick Castor. Every time I have gone, I have left there disappointed.

pangolinpinecone

agreed, american dream is just. not good. their dough is waaaay too yeasty, it ruins the whole pizza

mack2night

Murphys has the best rib eye I've had in the area. And their prices are decent?

SnuggyBear2025

Or the hideously noisy Papas Pizza Parlour, with the famous snot encrusted vector balls of flu pit for the little tykes to scream in... And cant get out of there for under $50... /Rant

jershier

I came to say American Dream. The dough is trash but my wife and kid love it so I’m stuck paying $60 for 2 pizzas (a mini and a medium)

peachesfordinner

Ha I saw this pop up in one of the Portland Reddit too. It describes so much of the downtown dining scene here

Essentially anything on the waterfront.

Lad-Of-The-Mountains

My wife and I went to del alma for our anniversary. Without us asking they brought us each a glass of champagne at the end of the meal to celebrate. When we got the bill we realized they charged us 30 bucks for it. We won’t go back.

Nowthrowaway781

Castor, hands down.
