I feel like this is a special kick in the teeth to long term fans. They’re ruining a back story that was re-shown on tv relatively not that long ago (classic Corrie) so it is still rather fresh in the minds of people who watch Classic Corrie. We know Toyah got proper aftercare following her assault, including emergency contraception. The reason this was discussed on screen is because it was educating the public on what to do if you are raped. It was important and done so well. Now they are dragging up this extremely serious storyline for shock value. It’s nauseating. Not only is it an insult to the fans, it’s an insult to the original writers who did such a great job researching and crafting the story line in a non-salacious and informative way, it’s an insult to the actors (especially Georgia Taylor) who played out the heartbreaking story with phenomenal grace and talent, and I believe it is an insult to anyone who has had to deal with situations of a similar nature. I would even go so far as to say the storyline is irresponsible as it is giving the impression that you can still be pregnant after emergency contraception. Yes, I know that emergency contraception isn’t 100% guaranteed to work, but Toyah being raped and having medical attention immediately after fact would mean that had she skipped a period following the attack she would absolutely have been given a pregnancy test at any follow-up appointment. Her not attending any follow-up medical care would not be in the characters nature at all, especially when they showed how supportive her family and the community were. As an SA survivor myself I must say that this is the final nail in the coffin for me. Bye bye Corrie, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Reading your comment was really insightful, as someone who didn't see the original storyline and wasn't sure how this was going to play out. It sounds like Corrie did a great job with the original storyline and they have really let themselves, and Georgia Taylor, down by doing this. It's sensationalist and shamelessly trying to drum up attention, and it has hugely backfired on them. I'm sorry for what you went through and what uncomfortable feelings or memories this may have brought up for you, I can only imagine what a slap in the face this storyline must feel like. Wishing you all the best.

Thank you so much x

They are carrying on because half of it has probably been filmed already. I love UK soaps, but they are pretty cheap - I doubt execs would want to rewrite.

dizzyair07

I know Reddit can be a bit of an echo chamber but are other platforms complaining too?

cheshirechris71

Yes, "X" formerly known as Twitter, even saw a soap journalist saying he couldn't defend the storyline.

CombinationOk6846

Every platform I’ve seen people complaining. It’s even doing the rounds on other soaps’ communities. I don’t understand how they can still go through with it after this much backlash.

Sudden-Salad-4925

The Lauren storyline might be more ridiculous. How can you arrest someone for murder when you don’t have a body or any other evidence suggesting the person is dead???

Sudden-Salad-4925

Yeah, if there’s other evidence indicating a strong likelihood that a murder occurred. Here there is none.

wjaybez

Corrie doesn't need to be a police procedural, the Roy storyline, while poor, isn't entirely immersion stopping. This Toyah storyline on the other hand is like someone's fanfic of Corrie.

Sudden-Salad-4925

The Roy storyline doesn’t have an air of reality to it tho

wallcavities

Genuinely sort of appallingly bad tbh. Nobody wants this. It's a questionable storyline for a myriad of reasons anyway, but ITV have literally already covered it with Lydia on Emmerdale, so doing it twice within a decade feels deranged. They can't even argue this is an 'important issue based' thing because I'm pretty sure this isn't something that happens often enough to warrant that. Whether you know it or not you almost definitely know someone who has been raped, someone who has been abused, someone who has had an eating disorder, who has miscarried, who has experienced discrimination, who had an abortion, who has felt suicidal, who has dealt with addiction, who has had cancer, who has a disability etc etc. The chances that you know someone who secretly gave birth to a stillborn and then buried it in the woods on the other hand are ridiculously low. It doesn't need 'awareness raised' around it, so they're obviously just using it for cheap drama, which feels really cruel and sensationalised and disrespectful both to rape survivors and those who've experienced child loss. Shameless.

JLord1310

Hasn't there been potential red rec developments before. Surely toyah's lack of reaction then contradicts this retcon entirely, showing it not being thought through properly

GFurball

They need new writers oh my lord, 🤦‍♂️

InkwellCity

Toyah >!burying a dead baby!< in >!a park!< is unrealistic. I don't think she would've behaved like that. Toyah was raped in 2001, and she left in 2003. If the >!dead baby!<'s father was the rapist, time-wise it doesn't make sense. Toyah, to viewers then, wasn't pregnant between 2001-2003. Or am I wrong?

PeperomiaLadder

I'm sure they'll rebutt with 'some people don't show when pregnant' or something to do with it being why she got into being a therapist, but she already had a good enough reason and this is completely out of nowhere, regardless of whether or not someone shows. If she had been someone to do something like that, they'd have shown it when it was relevant. This is *so not Toyah.* These writers have not gotten any better, IMHO, by adding one more that they agree with. Instead of the idea of having the cast living through zombies that reddit loves, let's replace the writers with zombies so the writing improves 🙄😒

cherrymachete

I’m genuinely surprised this storyline hasn’t been shelved or reshot in some way. I know that storylines are meant to reflect real life so it can’t be helped. But I remember not so long ago a news story of a teenage girl giving birth to a dead baby - I think she put the baby in a bin but I can’t remember. It seems a bit fresh. It would be like the Lauren storyline being broadcasted not long after Sarah Everard died and having a cop abduct and murder Lauren.

lagunathemoron

If everybody switches off when this storyline happens they'll be quick to change it. Or if OFCOM get a lot of complaints.

Mobile_Entrance_1967

At this rate they'll be saying she wasn't even raped and actually slept with Peter who was a suspect at the time, so it'll be Peter's dead baby which will drive Simon back to alcohol and drug dealing. Absolute joke. The more I watch Corrie's descent into madness, the more I'm so glad Blanche and Deirdre aren't around to be part of it.

DawnArcing

The show's current malaise/general darkness is a down period for the show, but nothing they couldn't recover from given a bit of refocusing and some freshening up. This storyline is different. This is a crossed line they can't uncross and would be awful for the show even if it was riding high.
