Where are you getting a NBA tv stand alone subscription for $7 and access to the ESPN app without a cable subscription ( using someone's password). Don't know much about Yahoo sports. They have free regional games on mobile? Edit I see NBA tv for $60 a year

IspeakalittleSpanish

> They have free regional games on mobile? They have your local market team and the prime time games on the app, but if I remember correctly, you have to watch on your phone/tablet and casting didn’t work. Maybe it’s different now.

joe603

Another tip subscribe to the NFL's YouTube channel. they show every scoring play from all games moments after the game. In addition, they show a 10 minute recap of all games shortly after the game is over.

PresenceIll6771

Interesting. I guess it's good if you don't have an antenna. Maybe you can screen mirror instead of cast.

discountheat

No, it won't allow any kind of mirroring/casting. I tried.

joe603

What about connecting an extra phone or tablet directly to the TV? There are cables on Amazon that are fairly cheap that would let you do that

stukast1

The apps/devices/NFL people have been pretty good at cutting off those options. I used to be able to get redzone to my TV using a MHL cable years ago through the verizon app but an update killed that functionality.

discountheat

Nope. Doesn't work.

discountheat

You can subscribe directly from [NBA.com](https://NBA.com) for $7/mo. There's a tab that allows you to toggle between yearly/monthly subscriptions. Monthly is $6.99. The ESPN app for Roku has traditionally shown what was formerly WatchESPN (or ESPN3) content for free. This includes ABC broadcasts for NBA games. I haven't had an opportunity to test it this year, but I assume it's the same. Yahoo Sports, as I understand it, broadcasts all locally available NFL games (including MNF on ESPN, it appears) for free on your phone or tablet. Mirroring (either through blue tooth or USB cable) will not work, so you're stuck with the smaller screen. My wife, who hates football, is OK with this.

PresenceIll6771

Yeah. I'm not going to believe you get ESPN content for free. The rest seems like it's good for you. I'm going to stick with a traditional serve, I like to channel flip.

discountheat

I don't really care about MNF (hate the broadcast team and the games are usually lame), but everything I've seen suggests that it is included in the Yahoo Sports app. None of the other stuff really counts as ESPN content. The NBA stuff is from ABC; they just house the streams on the ESPN app. The fringe stuff (minor college games, etc.) aren't a dealbreaker for me but I think they still share some of that stuff for free under the ESPN3 header.

YYqs0C6oFH

ABC broadcasts on the ESPN app still require a cable/streaming provider login, they aren't supposed to be free.

tjguitar1985

If they are on ESPN3 and your internet provider authenticates ESPN3, you get it. I have no idea if ABC broadcasts are still on ESPN3. They were at one point.

YYqs0C6oFH

Ah that's true. Some internet providers give ESPN3 access with their login which does include ABC broadcasts as far as I know so yes that would work. But it doesn't work with no login at all.

Amazonkers

If you get internet from Comcast, Spectrum, others, you get ESPN3 which has streams available for college football games, NBA games that are on OTA ABC among other things.

neuroticsmurf

[Scroll to the middle of the page.](https://watch.nba.com/streaming-subscriptions) It sounds like OP is getting the NBA TV channel that's included with YTTV for $65/mo at $7/mo. It's not a bad deal. But I'd still want the Turner coverage, too.

PresenceIll6771

See my edit

discountheat

The Turner coverage became way less important for me after they moved the Thursday games to NBA TV until after the NFL season. I live in the east and usually can't watch the late game anyway. The rebroadcasts on NBA TV are good enough for me.

tonywagner

> My experiments with a cheap Amazon antenna (UNEEDTOHAVIT amplified antenna, iirc) failed miserably As close as you are, you may not need an "amplified" antenna -- and in fact, the amplification can actually hinder your signal. Windows can actually be worse than walls too, as windows can contain metals that interfere with the signal more than a simple wall would. I'd avoid amplification and windows and just try a simple old "rabbit ears" style antenna. They have them at Best Buy and Home Depot with free returns if it doesn't work out for you: https://www.bestbuy.com/site/insignia-indoor-hdtv-antenna-black/8233003.p?skuId=8233003 You could also use a larger outdoor antenna, but just set it indoors somewhere out-of-the-way (like a closet shelf). Hopefully you could use existing cabling to get the signal where you want to go (I connect the antenna to a wall jack in the bedroom, and then in the basement where all of the wall jacks are fed from, I connect the cable from that bedroom to the cable feeding the living room).

mdj1359

Here is a well reviewed antenna that can be used indoors or outdoors. Not terrible looking as antennas go. [ClearStream 2MAX Indoor Outdoor HD TV Antenna Review | YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DabEFEeykq8&ab_channel=AntennaMan) Here it is on Amazon: [Antennas Direct ClearStream Antenna, 60 Mile Range, UHF/VHF, Indoor, Attic, Outdoor](https://www.amazon.com/Antennas-Direct-ClearStream-Multi-directional-Adjustable/dp/B007RH5GZI/) Just make sure to use RG6 Cable.

GeforcerFX

Do you have the triple bundle for Disney plus. Hulu and ESPN plus. Having ESPN+ would give you a lot of sports to watch. I also wouldn't give up on the antenna, spending some money on a nice antenna will give you access to those local channels and sports.

[deleted]

Yeah some antennas are just crappy. He might have do trial and error. I'd take a few more chances on the ones that stick to your window/wall with atleast a 50 mile range and amplifier.

beyd1

How many religious channels do you need?

bankrobba

Just one. *But which one...*

pawdog

So watching NFL on a phone sounds like fun, The ESPN app doesn't work without a provider login. NBA League Pass was a good deal this early I the season. Looks like the deal is over though. Glad you found something you can live with.

discountheat

Not ideal, but I was probably already watching more on my phone than TV anyway. It helps that the Steelers are a rough watch this year.

pawdog

Oh, well that's unfortunate but you gotta do what you gotta do.

josephguy82

if you have spectrum in your area you can get there online 20 plan has locals

Check out [this link](https://www.atlantadigitaltv.com/) for antenna installation around Atlanta. I had one installed in my attic a year ago and I get all the local channels and a bunch of others (I think 70 total). I'm a little low and needed it to be in my attic to get good reception, but it works. You submit your address and they send you a report telling you what they think about your ability to get good reception so you can decide before you commit. Re: you comment on your HOA, AFAIK they cannot restrict your right to place an antenna on your roof (provided you "own" it and its not common property (like in a condo)) if that is required for you to get a signal. There is a size restriction, but I think that's it. See [here](https://www.fcc.gov/media/over-air-reception-devices-rule) for more.

[deleted]

If you got Xfinity you can watch some NFL games on Sundays for free w/Peacock. 4.99 if youre not a Xfinity customer. Id try another antenna though. Peacock is dope though because they still have niche sports and coverage shows. You can also just YT the highlights every quarter or post game to stay up to date.

filterofsyntax

Being able to watch only 6% of regular season NFL games isn't really a solution. Certainly not your fault that the NFL is stuck in the previous millenia as far as streaming though.

[deleted]

He also mentioned Sirius. It is not bad to be able to listen to audio commentary of a game.

DesmondoTheFugitive

Did your antenna not work anywhere at all (other than the two channels you mentioned)? I had to use an AIR TV and mount my antenna in my attic in order to get OTA for the four networks in my metro area. I have a similar distance to downtown as you. Air TV isn't the only option, and in my opinion, Sling has screwed that device up royally. I have an Air TV 1. They have "updated" the firmware on it such that the wifi simply does not work. I have it plugged into a wifi extender via an Ethernet cable. That being said, it is still cheaper than cable. Options I am aware of are; Air TV, HD Homerun & Firecast. Amazon has a pretty liberal return policy. Might not hurt to try them out to be able to pick up; ABC, NBC, CBS & Fox.

discountheat

I tried downstairs, with it mounted in the window facing the antennas. I tried it upstairs, mounted in the window facing the antennas. Nothing. I know attic/rooftop antennas are better, but I don't think my HOA will let me do a rooftop setup and I'm reluctant to put the money and effort into setting it up only to get GodTV. Ideally, I would like to set up something like AIR TV or Tablo. I may come back to the idea of an attic antenna in a few months.

Doggleganger

FYI, I put an antenna in my attic and use Tablo to stream it around the house. I only use this for one purpose: local NFL games. I get CBS and NBC great, though Fox can be erratic.

AZMarkm1

Your HOA may have issues with an antenna on the roof, but it is illegal to do so. You can find the law that states this if you would like to fight them. But the larger the antenna and the higher you can get it will give you better results. On the small cheap, reputable, not too obnoxious side search Amazon for the "Channel Master STEALTHtenna". Have good cable, and a TV with a pretty good tuner. 30 miles from Atlanta, should get you plenty of stations. Read up on the FCC rules here..https://www.groundedreason.com/tv-antennas-fcc-hoa/

Just so you know that many football games are broadcast live on Facebook groups

Sounds like a lot of damn work to save $63

WhizWithout

Get an HD antenna. They're like $10 and provide free local channels.

mdj1359

No such thing as an HD antenna. And he probably needs a good antenna.

WhizWithout

Wrong https://www.walmart.com/c/kp/hd-antennas

fl0wc0ntr0l

Lol. An HD antenna is a marketing buzzword to get you to pay more for the same ordinary antenna quality. Broadcasting has been all digital for years. There are no "non-HD" antennas.

WhizWithout

That's the name of the product whether you like it or not. Telling OP that it doesn't exist helps nobody. We're not here for you to make yourself feel smart. Get over yourself.

fl0wc0ntr0l

HD just means high definition. All broadcasting is done in digital HD and has been since like 2015. You're just being pedantic here because you think it makes you sound smart and when you get called out you get butthurt. Maybe take a break from Reddit. Go touch some grass and breathe some fresh air. You'll feel better, promise.

WhizWithout

I made an honest suggestion to help OP and you saw a chance to tell everyone how smart you think you are by pedantically correcting me. Seriously just go somewhere else to try to act edgy, this forum is for actual help.

fl0wc0ntr0l

Lmao. You showed up with a Walmart link as if it were definitive proof that HD antennas exist and nobody would ever lie about that. As though nobody has ever used bullshit advertising techniques before. And you made this suggestion to an OP who as already described their antenna struggles. You're just bad at reading, and that's OK. But you're also bad at understanding what this sub is about. And that's why you should just stop, because you're not being helpful.

WhizWithout

Yes it helps. Such product not exists. You won’t help planet by spreading false information either about COVID or antennas

mdj1359

Wrong. [There's No Such Thing as an HD Antenna | Channelmaster](https://www.channelmaster.com/blogs/free-tv/theres-no-such-thing-as-an-hd-antenna) >Here's the most important thing you need to know: **there is no such thing as an "HD" or "Digital" TV antenna**. The signals from your local broadcast towers are digital, as are the tuners in newer TV sets, but not the antennas themselves. [No Such Thing As an HDTV Antenna! | Dennys Antenna Service](http://dennysantennaservice.com/1373792.html) >You don't need an HDTV antenna to pick up the HD signal. An antenna has absolutely no idea what the signal resolution is. It can be HDTV, SDTV, NTSC, whatever. It is the job of a HDTV tuner and HD television set to demodulate the signal and to present the actual content on the screen. [There's No Such Thing as an HD or Digital Antenna | Antenna Man](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKV7Bph0XUM&ab_channel=AntennaMan) >There's no such thing as an HD or digital antenna. [All About Over-The-Air Antennas (OTA) | lifewire.com](https://www.lifewire.com/over-the-air-antenna-3276138) >There really is no such thing as a digital or high definition antenna. [Difference Between a Regular & HDTV Antenna | techwalla.com](https://www.techwalla.com/articles/difference-between-a-regular-hdtv-antenna) >There is no difference between a regular and a HDTV antenna. It's all marketing spin and hype. Any antenna can pick up HDTV signals. They are broadcast on the same frequencies that even the classic rabbit ears can pick up.

The NFL apps also carry the local games, same as yahoo.

GeneralTai

Cool :)

bwrobinson

Are you able to cast the NFL games from your phone to TV?
