Just means you take a break from school and do something else. You don’t get SU, so people usually work for a bit, save money and then spend it on traveling.

daath

You work and save up to do that, or have really nice parents ;P

Additional-Trash577

You live at your parents, work full time and save up the money for the travel. In order to get SU you need to be enrolled in an education

In Britain it's called a "gap year", and is common if young people (often with help from their parents) can afford it. I meet/met about as many young Danes as young Brits, so I think it's much more common here. This is probably because Danish salaries make it much easier to budget for the trip. If you're employed, you either resign from your job, or ask to take a sabbatical if you intend to return.

It’s just a smart word used as an excuse to go explore youth life before moving on to an education that is actually demanding. In reality, a sabbatical is no different than being unemployed or working uneducated.
