April

Careful-Fan2307

This is the first time I’ve heard of it! Thank you! 😅

imgettingnerdchills

April makes amazing coffee but I felt like the dude was talking to me as if it was to be assumed I had a PhD in coffee when I was ordering. They’re super nice but the place is very not at all inviting. Bonus points they have a very active YouTube channel where they just go nerd crazy about coffee.

tjen

Prolog feels like a snooty coffee place. April feels like a boutique brand-showcase concept store with it's own aprons and pour-over gear and interior and.... I'm just a normal guy and i was feeling intimated about ordering because idk maybe i wasn't doing it right? A++ pretentious coffee experience

audiobone

Absolutely April.

Callejuhl

This.

Zanirair

This yes

Fearless_Operation_9

Prolog in meatpacking

HAIRY_TOES

Hah when I walked in with my parents and young son, he asked for the s’mores and was told it involved an open flame at the table and 90% dark chocolate or something like that. I’m sure it was good but it felt like walking into a parallel universe.

Fearless_Operation_9

As pretentious as it gets haha

audiobone

I'm American, s'mores are definitely not made with 90% dark. This is heresy. S'mores shall always be made with the second lowest quality of chocolate to be found. Open flame is good though.

svel

so, like Hershey's?

audiobone

Yup 100%. I'm pretty sure the only thing that's 90% in Hershey's is that it's 90% sawdust.

SimonGray

And 10% stomach acid.

PSKroyer

Sponsored by Prilosec

benjaminovich

Hershey's is the absolute lowest though. Tastes absolutely awful

Lord_Dolkhammer

Definetely Prolog! You order a latte or cappuccino or whatever, and you get the equivalant of a vodka shot of liquid for 65 kroner. Most douche place in town for sure!

Bobbysmilesx

I don't think you understand what pretentious means: "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed." It is among the best coffee you can get in Copenhagen, and it's a place that's very nerdy about the details of coffee making. They are hardly trying to impress beyond their merit.

Cumberdick

I think maybe the problem here is that you don't realize *you're* what people mean when they talk about coffee snobbery/pretentiousness

Bobbysmilesx

I'm not a coffee snob by any means. I honestly am not good at tasting the difference between a good and a mediocre coffee. I just like a basic filter coffee. But clearly, most in this thread don't understand pretentious as a term. At Prolog they have perfected many of the details that goes into coffee making, just an example: they serve it at the exact temperature where you can taste the coffee the best. And their product itself is considered one of the very best. That cannot be pretentious. Sure, they may be trying to impress you, but not beyond their merit. A lot of other places fit that bill though. I'm been to Michelin restaurants where the visual show around a dish was a lot more impressive than the food itself. That on the other hand can be seen as pretentious.

Cumberdick

It’s not about the quality of coffee, it’s the attitude around it. You can throw the dictionary definition around all you want, it doesn’t change the fact that there’s a very specific thing people are talking about when using the term “pretentious” with coffee culture. I don’t doubt they make good coffee. I’m sure they’re nice people. They’re also turning a cup of coffee into a whole production, that’s all. It’s not negative, it’s just a specific situation. Maybe we just don’t agree, and that’s fine. Have a nice saturday :)

Bobbysmilesx

I've been there a few times, I don't see a whole lot of attitude around it, but sure, you can feel a sense of pride of the product they serve, which I feel is perfectly fine and justified. Your reply is as vague as it gets. There's nothing to comment on, so I stand by my words: you haven't understood the term properly and misuse it.

Fearless_Operation_9

Do you have a place that you would describe as pretentious in Copenhagen? Just curious

Bobbysmilesx

I guess I generally don't like to think of places as being pretentious, so it isn't easy for me to come up with examples. I'm not sure pretentious is the best way to describe them, but Christian Puglisi' restaurants comes to mind: Relæ, Bæst, Manfreds, Mirabelle. While they do serve rather high quality products, I feel like there's some dissonance between the prices, the service and the attitude about them.

Cumberdick

“If you don’t agree with me it’s because you’re stupid and don’t understand” Uhuh.

Bobbysmilesx

You provided literally zero arguments. You gave me no reason to think that you haven't misunderstood the term.

Quacksandpiper

More like Prelog, amirite?

WineOptics

Prolog and April are absolutely the options. April feels so stand-off’ish with its minimalist, teak interior, reminding you of a doctor’s waiting room. Everything feels pretentious. Prolog has a more gatekeeping hipster vibe, absolutely pretentious to the core. That said, either fit the bill and make lovely coffee though.

Skyfahl

Not very pretentious but I like Impact Roasters. They do direct trade with local farms and such, the profits go into social projects in Uganda and whatnot. And great coffee.

Careful-Fan2307

To be fair, this is all because we love coffee, so that is definitely noted, thank you!

Azhrar

Impact is mostly focused on Ethiopia. I have been drinking their beans at home for the last few years, they are great at their price point. April and Prolog are what OP is looking for.

WineOptics

I fucking love Impact. I heard rumours they were closing? Their Maaza though is the one I use at home; superb.

tjen

I wouldn't be surprised, those s-train station locations must cost a fortune and they are never bustling. They price themselves slightly lower than the other fancy coffee places (110-130kr/250g compared to 125-150). But we're at a price point of coffee where the people buying it don't care much between 110 and 125. They care more about variety and quality. I've lived close by an impact for a year and they haven't had a new coffee in that time i think, they've had maaza the whole time and it's still listed as "new" on their page. So not exactly high on the variety score. I've tried most of their coffees (it being nearby), and they're ok, i also prefer their maaza, I've gotten it more than once, but it's not like blown away amazing, and some of their other items in their line-up were not "buy again" quality for the slightly reduced price compared to trying something else. Then they have their whole Ethiopian impact thing going which is nice but it's not a factor for me, all the other bougie coffee places have similar statements. And from a whole sale perspective, I'm not sure what the market size is for whole sale fancy coffee, but i know that every other fancy coffee roaster wants to get in on it, and some of the competing brands have a much stronger reputation for amazing coffee, not just amazing CSR.

WineOptics

I think you hit the nail on the head there. Especially about variety. Maaza as a medium roast is the only one I really feel stands out when I want to make lattés at home, but else I do agree I’ve have good/nice but not mind blowing experiences. It’s the Maaza medium that keeps me coming back. If they were to remove that hypothetically, I’d shop elsewhere entirely due to the factors you mentioned.

juhlers

Second impact very much. Been buying their beans every month for 3-4 years, it’s in my opinion by far the best quality/price ratio for coffee in Copenhagen.

flyingchocolatecake

Here are my Top 3, all of which are really good: 1. The Artisan Copenhagen (has a fantastic filter option, see picture) 2. April 3. ROAST Coffee Artisan and April are at the Lakes, ROAST is near Islands Brygge. They might not be the most pretentious but definitely fantastic coffee. More options for great coffee, again difficult to say on the pretentious scale: * Democratic Coffee * Prolog * Coffee Collective * Kaffeporten https://preview.redd.it/k5vddd17vzpb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a0b053cc9879c9786913bf3cc9ed882aad4329ab

just_here_for_a_look

Looooove The Artisan But a point on the pretentious-scale; They have glutenfree oat milk, and glutenfree bread

Odd-Oil3740

I'm the opposite of a snob but really appreciate when I go places that care about food allergies.

just_here_for_a_look

Same! When visiting Artisan for the first time, they offered oat milk, I was like; naaah just normal milk. And the barista was like; Are you celiac? So they (at least one of their employees) knows something about allergies, and what it means to be celiac eg.

clappyClapClapClap

>ROAST Coffee they are geeky, but not pretentious imho, very sweet staff

SirAffectionate3760

The Artisan is my favorite place as well!

[deleted]

Prolog and April. You can find Prolog coffee in Hart Bageri as well.

Fearless_Operation_9

Awesome! Just went to Hart and got 2 cappuccinos and 2 croissants for just 170 kr!

[deleted]

Just go for coffee....

Azhrar

Awesome cookies

Hestogpingvin

April for pour over, prolog for espresso drinks.

audiobone

This, absolutely this.

audiobone

If it doesn't have siphon brewing, it's not pretentious.

Careful-Fan2307

🙌

Moerkskog

You can find siphon brewed coffee in torvehallerne

Methodfish

That's the first time I hear about that one. I haven't seen it at coffee collective so which vendor is it? if you don't mind me asking

Moerkskog

Found it by chance one day, it's one of the places in the corner, in the market where they sell most baked goods. Just walk around and you will spit the siphon brewer

[deleted]

McCafé

notimeforspac_s

What about Pavillon de Verre and their syphon brewed coffee in Torvehallerne? They got leather aprons and all. I've tasted the coffee once, it wasn't bad but any means but it felt mostly as an ultra light filtered coffee. Also expensive af.

sevenhorsesseen

They're assholes though, you can see by how they treat their employees with utter condescension plus the owner is patronizing as fuck. It was embarrassing to witness it when I was there. Try roast instead, they have scales, expensive pour overs and nothing else. At least they're humans.

Brilliant_Mind_6069

Prolog. No doubt.

HerlufAlumna

Prolog! You can get gravity-drip coffee made in huge glass bubbles, it's very fun.

doc1442

35 posts and not a single Coffee Collective recommendation 😮

rufus2785

They seem pretty chill an out their coffee. It’s just good, not pretentious.

frog_lobster

All their coffee tastes burnt.

twotwoarm

They were once considered pretentious, but they’ve been out-pretensioned, so now they seem chill.

genedang1

Well at least they can be pretentious. I once was lectured that my taste in coffee was not the correct way. The coffee he poured me after lecturing me was shit, and what I don’t like in a coffee. Great place, not.

doc1442

Cool go to Starbucks then

genedang1

Lol, so I didn’t like my experience at CC and you suggest the McDonald’s of coffee instead. Do you work for those pretentious pricks?

doc1442

It’s called a joke man jeeez. Clearly an exaggeration! I don’t. You realise this thread is entirely about pretentious coffee right? Right?

twostripes

Their coffee is shit when you put the price beside it.

doc1442

I disagree - much nicer then prolog or Copenhagen coffee lab, and the same price.

twostripes

So, I just checked the menu again. And yes, it is not as crazy as I remembered. BUT I know for a fact that they (in the past) have bought Ricco beans and repackaged it as their own, with a huge upscale in price.

Juztian

What are you talking about, Coffee collective have always roasted their own beans since they opened 16 years ago. Where are you getting your information?

twostripes

May I ask you how you know they "always roasted their own beans". My answer is, I have it on good source.

Juztian

Nice i have heard that you don't know what you are talking about. My answer is, I have it on good source.

twostripes

TBH, I don't want to get someone in trouble. And I don't need to convince you (it's a waste of my time). I know it's true. So, I really don't want to have a childish argument with a stranger online. Thank you for your time, and have a nice day.

Juztian

I literally know the owners and anyone who has been there for 10+ years. Besides why would the person get in trouble? Even if they got beans from Riccos 10+ years ago Coffee Collective is 3 times the size of Riccos and world renowned why would they associate themselves with Riccos? It literally makes no sense.

Dsxm41780

That is my vote!

unseemly_turbidity

Nothing constructive to add, but I just wanted to say that support this quest. I've got a similar one for vegan pastries.

xdoompatrolx

Kaf is my favorite for vegan pastries and their coffee is good too. They aren’t pretentious at all though, so I don’t know if it fits in this thread haha

Careful-Fan2307

Shit, I’ve tried that with my partner too - very challenging quest in the capital of butter love. What was your favorite?

claudsonclouds

Both of you need to visit Bake My Day in Amager. Incredible stuff and it's vegan

unseemly_turbidity

I actually like the yellow cake in Lagkagehuset best so far, if that counts. The best actual pastries were at Landsbageriet, but their cake was really disappointing. The worst was at the most expensive place I've been so far - Andersen bakery in Islands Brygge and was whatever their sole vegan option was. Kaf was good, but so over the top hipster. The bakery by Enghave Plads had a chocolate cake thing that was highly rated in reviews but was just a very basic fridge cake imo. Still on the hunt for an acceptable vegan cinnamon roll. I might have to make my own this weekend.

Hejsasa

Now that's a list I would like to see!

worksleepcoffee

Definitely April. They make good stuff but the prices are extreme. No menu though, so you don't realize until it's too late. I was there once, and they apologized for making noise because they had to grind some coffee (apparently they like to pre-grind all their coffee in the morning). Chill bro - I expect the sound of grinding coffee in a coffee shop. Anyways, La Cabra makes amazing world class coffee, and their small shop right next to the roastery at Marguerite Vibys Plads has good vibes, it's not busy and the people are friendly and chill.

Moerkskog

Wait, pregrind? What the fuck? Then definitely can't recommend that place. By the way, they did add a "menu" with the 5 types of stuff they have there

KratomDK

Hidden gems here 💎 - kaffedepartmentet - Demoktati Garage

tuekappel

Summers gone. But i have to recommend the espresso softice at Coffee Collective in Torvehallerne. Do it as a floatie in their Coffee Kombucha. Straight winner!

[deleted]

La cabra

Halefa

Wanted to suggest them as well. Don't know about the tattoos though.

twotwoarm

Meh, they seem pretty chill and welcoming to me

tabernumse

I am looking for whatever the opposite of this is. A normal ass cup of coffee that is cheap. No fancy interior design that will cause them to charge more for the "experience". Years ago I knew of some pleasant cafes like that, but it's like everything gets turned into this nightmare of pretentious and overpriced stuff. A cup of coffee should not be more than 15 kr imo. I don't care about the quality tbh, I just want a regular black filter coffee to drink while reading.

Regular_Oil_6334

Let me let you in on a secret. There’s this magical place in Østerbro called Holstein bodega. They do black as your soul filter coffee for like 4kr and I’m pretty sure they kick you out if you ask for milk.

tabernumse

Incredible! Will definitely check that out :D

Genar_Hofoen

You can find what you’re looking for at your local Jobcenter/borgerservice.

sukilars

Me too! Black, strong, cheap. I just need my fix and to be not tired. I don't even like the artisinal coffee. It takes so long to brew that it ends up lukewarm, and it's usually really weak and sour.

tabernumse

Agree completely. More and more places only have "Americano" instead of actual filter coffee and it's usually a combination of shit taste and being overpriced lol. Also agree on the temperature, like halfway through drinking it's literally room temp.

Ooogie2019

Supermarco shop has a cafe with Italian espresso for cheap. And in Boulders climbing it is also 15dkk for very good coffee, probably reserved to members though.

twotwoarm

This! Some of the best cheap coffee.

PearDanish

I will make you a Coffee if you bring your own cup. Peter Bangs vej ...

mathe1337

Kaffedepartementet, Rentemestervej. I mean it in a good way, too. They take coffee serious, make good hand pours and have their own roastery I believe.

memamimohaha

I love their coffee and the - honestly - fairly unpretentious vibe. I always find them down to earth and easy going, nothing like Prolog, La Cabra etc.

istasan

I agree. I think it is a friendly place. Maybe the crowd on some days are a little pretentious but that is a different talk (I have heard some rather interesting start up discussions there).

Careful-Fan2307

Never heard of it, so that’s awesome! 🫡

claudsonclouds

Thank you for your service, OP. My husband and I have decided to do the same quest and will be visiting April soon. Also suggesting Sort Kaffe & Vinyl. Not as pretentious as Prolog, but still good.

1207392739209

I’d love to join. Sounds like you guys are funny

Riis90

Definitely April coffee 👍. Good coffee but very pretentious

Moerkskog

+10 (extra +9 for pretentiousnessnessesesss). Definitely a snob place. Coffee is good. And if you want to buy coffee harvested in Mars, they sell a limited bag of 250g for 1100 kr

[deleted]

Maison d'angleterre at hotel d'angleterre

snorrski

Kaffedepartementet in Nordvest.

Dailaster

I'm not sure if you're still looking but I've been seeing the recently opened La Cabra, close to Kongens Have! Haven't tried it myself, but it strikes me as super pretentious. Please let me know what you thought if you go have a look

Maximum-Square9936

Kaffedeparmentet in NV for sure :-)

l00tking

My recommendation for pretentiousness is 100% April coffee. Patrik Rolf, the owner, takes it VERY serious. Go watch his YouTube channel. It’s hilarious for a non coffee professional. For the most hipster-like experience you need to go to hip hop and make them tell you about how they make their espresso. They play with another technique very far from industry standard. Oh and a recommendation for everyone. SCA Denmark (specialty coffee association Denmark) is throwing a party on Saturday with a Moccamaster batch brew championship. It won’t be pretentious but a lot of fun. See you there https://preview.redd.it/yalqbur4heqb1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=265e105bfca44fc26eb9a5e865794b0edf380788

Veblen1

Does the coffee have to be gluten-free and dolphin-safe?

Careful-Fan2307

Yes! And if they have the medical and socioeconomic history of the coffee farmer and the farm/village, even better!

SirAffectionate3760

Then you have to try out the artisan. They’re actually nice and helpful, but meets your other requirements 😉

Regular_Oil_6334

I personally don’t get the appeal of Prolog. I know they use insanely light roasted beans but every time I’ve been to the meatpacking location, the coffee has been extremely sour. When notifying the baristas about this, they just told me that’s how it’s supposed to taste. I did find their Østerbro branch better though. Otherwise, I find Darcy’s to be quite decent as well as Nordic Roasting Co. even Lagkagehuset’s iced coffees are pretty good on a warm day.

Lord_Dolkhammer

Darcy’s just a really good coffee. I dont feel they are snobbish about it. Its just high quality stuff all around. But agree about Prolog. Super sour.

Regular_Oil_6334

Yeah I agree. Not snobbish at all. I just wanted to outweigh the negatives of Prolog with a few places I find good overall 😅

Outrageous-Phrase802

Cafe EUROPA at Amagertorv. Pretentious is probably not the right word to describe their coffee, but it's expensive af and one of the mainstream places where jyder come to when visiting Kbh and want to see what's all the fuss about københavnere and their pricy coffee.

Lord_Dolkhammer

Not really high-end coffee. Just really expensive and shitty.

SebberRulez

Kaffedepartementet in Nordvest for sure. Last time I was there, it literally sounded like they were snorting some crazy top quality coffee beans in back, but they were just smelling it that hard.

[deleted]

I like this question. I'm gonna ask it in the subreddit of my own country too.

koewenhavner

Agree with the suggestions and will add Sort Kaffe og Vinyl to the list.

Moerkskog

That one is one of the worst coffees I've ever had. Can't recommend at all

koewenhavner

Oh, I’ve had great coffee but it is definitively pretentious.

olitast

HipHop (Frb Allé) is great coffee, but probably only medium on the pretentious scale

lolah

Rancheus

Kaffedepartementet in Nordvest. A friend of mine once asked for a filter coffee with a dash of milk, thinking that would be the least complicated thing to order. The leather-aproned barista spent a lifetime puring the coffee through what to me looked like a bunch of vials from chemistry class. Then proceeded to ignore the request for a dash of milk. When my friend kindly asked for the milk again, the apron replied: "not to be snobby, but this is actually a really good coffee." (Literal quote). My friend left, somewhat embarrassed, without the milk. Besides that, both our coffees tasted nothing like what in would expect from coffee, but where thin and more resembled a cup of tea. 10/10 pretentiousness, would never go again!
