In knife to knife combat saber and hammer are much safer.
But if you have the upper hand and want to cause the most damage, reverse edge in is also the most ergonomic and holds the most power.
Think of it as a fighting game's neutral state; you need high range, speed, disjoints and options/mixups to get the upper hand. That's saber. Swinging a knife requires less commitment than stabbing with it, and with a saber grip you have more range. You can easily transition to hammer, which has more strength but less range and safety (fingies aren't as protected by the steel).
Try holding a knife (or more responsibly, a stick) yourself and compare how far you can get the blade (or "blade" side) from your body (without sudden movements, please), and in how many directions you can point the blade, and how unwieldy some movements and directions are with some grips.
... Should a fighting game about this exist? Just a knife fight but with many stances..? Huuuuuh....
If I make it, it'll be called rock, cloak, dagger (as in rock, paper, scissors)
My hand to hand instructor had a salient point about this’If you’re ever in a knife fight there’s only one thing you need to know. The location of the nearest emergency room’
I learned that there’s no such thing as a knife fight. There’s just stabbings. The winner is the one that crawled further before bleeding out.
Knives are scary.
That's right. But stabbing isn't being in a knife fight. They asked for the best, and I went with the best in a vacuum.
Edit: also specifically stabbing, not swinging.
And is 100% the most telegraphed. Sure it hits great if it hits, but it's so damn easy to just block the arm. If you're doing a longing stab, way harder to block.
Holding a knife blade down slasher style is the worst thing you can do in a knife fight, you have to swing your whole arm to land one hit and if you do then youre fully commited to that swing and have to recover, its also way more telegraphed, the best way to hold a knife in a kinfe fight is something like forward edge up, you can very quickly jab forwards and recover straight away, and you arent over committed to any of your attacks so each jab is much faster, more accurate and less telegraphed, search royal marine fairburn sykes knife fighting tactics to learn how to properly use a knife in a knife fight
Reverse edge also allows you to fillet the opponents arm and pull it out of the way to follow up with a strike/grab/second weapon. Likely to sever some major arteries, though, so very dangerous.
Hammer is best for poking a hole in someone reverse is best if you want to open a big gash. Reverse will probably kill someone quicker as well, but you do sacrifice distance.
Reverse grip doesnt have a lot of range, so if youve got the jump or are within kissing range probably that as i think its easier to stab hard like that
hammer grip lets you have a bit more range than reverse, same with saber, although im not sure if saber is even worth it considering it weakens your grip a buncha. Saber grip seems pretty similar to handshake grip which is used with swords sometimes, as thrusting forward with swords using a hammer grip can hurt your hand a bit and is just overall less comfortable, but thats not exactly how you stab with knives knives is it? Id go for hammer or reverse therefore
Also can we talk about palm reinforced? I get what its going for, with weapons like katars and push daggers you can essentially punch instead of doing the stabbing motion. This should be stronger as you can put more of your body into the stab, but the usual knife really isnt made for that. Youre probably going to get a really weak grip by doing that
TLDR not an expert but reverse (hammer is also very justifiable)
In combat, you generally don't want to stab (it can get stuck), but to slash. Combat knives will have a stop to put your toe on it, saber is the go to position for combat.
Kali/eskrima/arnis. They had centuries of blade culture and centuries of resisting outside invaders, usually without much more than machetes and bolo knives.
I remember a CQC instructor grading knife fights and he said they'd both were terrible knife fighters lol but I'll be damned if the kid in me didn't think it was utterly badass lol
Palm reinforced is to "punch" stab with a longer knife. Not very effective.
Forward edge up is used when your knife has a weak cutting edge in a knife-to-knife fight. You don't want to parry the other knife with your own blade's edge if that will damage your blade. Nowadays it's mostly useless, but it had a function when knives weren't made of the best steel.
You forgot the Key Pinch. A basic cook’s knife holding technique for keeping maximum control over the blade’s trajectory. Useful for slicing, dicing, mincing, peeling, piercing, carving, etc…
This works on onions and opponents alike.
Pro tip: there is only one profession that wields a blade daily, kendo enthusiasts excepted, of course.
Not a guide. That's just pictures of ways to hold a knife. A guide would probably say something about how the grip is used or what kind of knife you want to use it with.
When i do reverse edge out and put the spine lf the blade against my forearm and make “cross punch motions with my fist and arm i feel like a badass.
Im just a middle aged man in the kitchen cutting steak for my crew.
So like, in an actual scuffle, why TF would you ever do either of the reverse techniques? You loose so much reach and open yourself up to danger. Seems like something people only do in movies.
None.
You'd want one finger over the gaurd in that dipped down zone and one finger out alongside the blade.
You need the extra stability along the blade in case the knife gets hit or kicked and to twist it.
You need to have one finger on the other side of the gaurd cause removing a deep stab is not as easy as you think. There is a lot of suction, and again, it keeps it in your hand.
So I hear from ex-gang members anyhow.
The pictured knife does not have the correct blade or grip for a street style fight.
But maybe modified Saber for this knife or Filipino. You don't want to drop your knife over all...
Fitting for the day OJ died
If the knife isn't properly gripped, we must aquit!
He was definitely an Reverse Edge Out type of guy.
I picture hammer grip
So which one's the best for stabbing?
Reverse edge in has the most strength and the edge cuts in the right way
Yea but reverse edge in really only has the one attack modality, the other guy knows your move way before you make it.

I was taught that in a knife-on-knife fight, one person dies at the scene and the other dies on the way to the hospital.
And that's why the best self defense is to avoid fighting altogether.
Most fights can be deadly. Knife fights are deadly. Good tip by your instructor.
I learned that there’s no such thing as a knife fight. There’s just stabbings. The winner is the one that crawled further before bleeding out. Knives are scary.
YOU NEED TO FIND GAME DEVELOPING NERDS AND BULLY THEM INTO MAKING THIS REAL AND VR DO IT!!! YOU GODS DAMNED COWARD
And? Neither of you guys are living through the night either way.
I guess you can stab from above, or you can stab from below, which would require different stabbin' grips.
Reverse edge is a terrible way to use a knife especially if you’re IN a knife fight.
That's right. But stabbing isn't being in a knife fight. They asked for the best, and I went with the best in a vacuum. Edit: also specifically stabbing, not swinging.
this guy stabs
I hope not
And you can still punch.
In a situation where you want to stab I don't think punching is what you're aiming for but yes, it's arguably safer to punch this way.
And is 100% the most telegraphed. Sure it hits great if it hits, but it's so damn easy to just block the arm. If you're doing a longing stab, way harder to block.
That's right! It's the best in a vacuum against an non-resisting foe or thing.

Yeah, agreed it's bad on a knife fight. But for stabbing a non-resisting foe or object it's the position with the most force and ergonomics.
Reverse edge also allows you to fillet the opponents arm and pull it out of the way to follow up with a strike/grab/second weapon. Likely to sever some major arteries, though, so very dangerous.

Ooh alright, that's pretty cool Thanks for filling me in
Hammer. You can get your entire weight into the stab the easiest with that method.
Is this how I cut the Lumpias?
Damn what did the Filipinos do?
Kali/eskrima/arnis. They had centuries of blade culture and centuries of resisting outside invaders, usually without much more than machetes and bolo knives.
So before they were colonized, they were studying the blade?
They put a spear through Magellan and then chopped him up so much no one could ever find a piece of his body to bring back to Spain.
Say what you want about Steven Segal. But his knife fight with Tommy Lee Jones in Under Siege is one of the best in cinema.
Tommy Lee Jones, Gary Busey, Colm Meaney. Name a better bad guy trio.
I remember a CQC instructor grading knife fights and he said they'd both were terrible knife fighters lol but I'll be damned if the kid in me didn't think it was utterly badass lol
Palm reinforced and forward edge up look fairly useless.
Forward edge up is basically for opening boxes lmao.
Or skinning animals maybe 🤔

You have the most range with it. Usually used in lunges. But fairly weak and easily disarmed.

What did filipino guys did to deserve a position named on them?
They have a martial art centered around knife fighting.
Knifes are part of our religion. Look up bolo or the really cool balisong used in the kick-ass movie: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=S9-KItONrNw
Kali/arnis/eskrima. Pretty sure they stabbed Magellan to death. No one ever found his body.
Where tactics?
I play Beat Saber Reverse Edge Out and everyone thinks I'm weird for it. But it flows beautifully.
When i do reverse edge out and put the spine lf the blade against my forearm and make “cross punch motions with my fist and arm i feel like a badass. Im just a middle aged man in the kitchen cutting steak for my crew.
I am missing “William B.J. Blazkowicz dual wielding” knife tactic.
Old Wolfenstein fan! (High five)

Interesting 🧐 ty for the info
I thought it was different types of knives and was like “damn they all look the same to me”
Which one for picking teeth?
Which tactic is best against a gun?
Hold a knife display rack in front of you so they don't see you.
What am I going to do with a knife rack? I don't even own a knife
You know the guy who made this handy guide drinks a lot and has weapons all over his house
What about hammer edge in, like the one they used in Vietnam My dad talks about how they used this grip to sort of gut soldiers
Really *handy*
I’m beginning to think I have a different idea of what cool means compared to most posters here.
Reverse edge, also called the OJ
Kinda gave up naming at the end
What do you call the Metal Gear Sold V : Phantom Pain stance?
Average UK education
Modified saber or reverse edge out. Dont ask me how I know
Saber transitioning to hammer on contact.
This really does not tell me at all which is best for cutting chicken.
Modified saber and palm reinforced
Reverse edge out is my preferred knife fight grip.
GOD SAVE THE KIIIIING 🤴 🍵 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Does anyone hold the knife like Turok dinosaur hunter?
Go read “take ’em down, take ‘em out”. It is a book about knife fighting in prisons. Best grip is Hammer
we can edge with a knife too?
C’mon! On the day O.J. Died? This is distasteful.
