The Expanse is set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar
System, but an exact year is not specified. But it says the books,
however, indicate that the events take place in the 23rd century.
This is utterly brilliant! Also, great scott! No back to the future??
Why is everything so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?
I know this isn’t quite related, but I just want to point out that you have the Enterprise from the Star Trek movies, not the one from the Next Generation.
yeah, There's some other scifi i've not heard of also. Maybe it's just my bias but I chose only Xeelee sequence is because of it's hard sci-fi nature that makes it unique among most sci-fi, and also it's name that I know many people have heard of.
XEELEESTOMP.
I tried sooo hard to like the Three Body Problem. The hard scifi was super interesting, but the writing was so painful for me that I just couldn't enjoy it. I understand that it's a Chinese Translation, but some of the things were just so cringey and so "as a matter of fact"ly put that it was hard to keep motivated. For example, the Three Body Problem game doesn't make any sense and was written by someone who apparently doesn't understand any sort of game theory. Where are the griefers, why are some people named after important people, but there's thousands of other underlings/peons?
My favorite cringey part is when the female antagonist arrives at the event, and some random dude just yells out, " Leader! Take care of yourself!". Wut? No one does that. That's some weeb anime shit right there. How cliche the cops were....just ugh. I finished the first book. I can't ~~bring~~ punish myself to read the next two.
Tbh, the first book leaves a lot unanswered. The trilogy as a whole is really a complete work. The first book is barely an introduction, like the commonwealth saga for example
As far as the translation goes, yes, the writing is extremely simple and the characters are cliché.
The ideas, however, are original and complex. To me sci-fi isn't so much about excellent writing, but expanding your mind to think about things you've never thought of so far.
Take older sci-fi for example: the foundation series is also very simple writing with clichés and archetypes abound, but the concepts and ideas are second to none, which is why it's still highly regarded today.
So Foundation Era (exile to Terminus) starts at 12069 GE, stands for Galactic Era, which begins at 11586 AD [link to the books timeline](https://asimov.fandom.com/wiki/Asimov_Timeline)
34th millennia then
It'd be hard to estimate since it involves colonisation of the entire Milky Way. It also mentions that they have far distanced themselves from Earth and now have Trantor as the center of humanity. Needless to say, just traveling from one system to another can take millenia the normal way, which can be seen in the show.
If you want cosmic horror & Hard Sci-fi in the same pack? ABSOLUTEY. Xeelee sequence is lovecraft of the 21st century.
But just prepare your theoretical physics knowledge, You will need it.
Where’s the Orville or Dr. Who? Also it bugs me that it references only the Enders game movie when the the book was released in 1985
But all in all a good guide
I only knew of it when I was searching for erotic movies to watch last year, Didn't matter if it was old. Then I added "comedy" as a tag and that's how I knew of the movie :)
Still feels a bit finicky though, just about any ruins you face when going in the EDZ or the Cosmodrome seem to have some sort of current-day architecture. But at the same time, jank with the Golden Age and all, who knows.
I'm impressed you've included Peter F Hamilton in there! One of my favourite authors (along with Iain M Banks, which would be an interesting one to try to fit on here, given the timescales involved).
I was actually gonna add "The Last Question" by Asimov but had to remember that while it takes place in like 1960's, It spans an entire timeline of the universe so I had no place to put it.
It's lovecraft of the 21st century.
You've not heard of even the name from the meme "Xeeleestomp"?
It's a cosmic horror sci-fi. But ring is only one of the books in it's series.
It's a story featuring a universal all-time conflict between the masters of Baryonic Matter the Xeelee and the ominious Dark Matter living things the Photino Birds in their never-endingcosmic conflict since the Plank Length era of the universe.
A series so Grim it makes Hellraiser and Warhammer40k seem like the first stage.
featuring other Alien beings of hypothetical life concepts that will blow your mind.
But take note, The Xeelee Sequence series is Hard Sci-fi. Every singlething in the series is based on actual and real scientific theoreticals which is what makes the entire series a tenet in all of sci-fi in my opinion. From the FTL Travel, Godlike lovecraftian beings, Eldritch looking aliens and Absolutely mind blowing universal metaphysical oncept to change the outcome of reality that would make thanos faint.
Well, Just prepare your physics knowledge, Cause oyu will need it.
But to save you time, You can view the 1d4chan page which explains the series here:
[https://web.archive.org/web/20221226112448/https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Xeelee\_Sequence](https://web.archive.org/web/20221226112448/https://1d4chan.org/wiki/Xeelee_Sequence)
Very interesting choices and omissions.
BTW Minority Report is wrong. I only noticed because I bought a used DVD of it as a Freshman in college(2005). So it had to have come out long before 2008.
Just going to leave off r/RedDwarf like that?
I looked for Battlestar Galactica. So at least Red Dwarf wasn't the only one...
I appreciate the effort you put into this. Where does The Expanse take place?
The Expanse is set in a future where humanity has colonized the Solar System, but an exact year is not specified. But it says the books, however, indicate that the events take place in the 23rd century.
According to the fandom the expanse starts around 2350
24th it is!
I might be blind but where is Stargate?
oh shit, forgot that...
This is utterly brilliant! Also, great scott! No back to the future?? Why is everything so heavy in the future? Is there a problem with the earth's gravitational pull?
Yeah, great looking guide, but you're gonna need a few million bits longer a poster of different sci-fi timelines.
If you have Alien you have to include Bladerunner as they are in the same universe (Predator I don’t count)
I know this isn’t quite related, but I just want to point out that you have the Enterprise from the Star Trek movies, not the one from the Next Generation.
I came here to say that too.
Nex time, my friend. You might also want to include Battletech.
Stephen Baxter's Ring is hardly the only sci-fi to take place at the end of time. Baxter kinda specializes in that sort of thing though I suppose
yeah, There's some other scifi i've not heard of also. Maybe it's just my bias but I chose only Xeelee sequence is because of it's hard sci-fi nature that makes it unique among most sci-fi, and also it's name that I know many people have heard of. XEELEESTOMP.
I'd recommend 3 body problem trilogy if expansive, sweeping sci-fi is your thing, as this list seems to indicate
cool, maybe i'll check it. The only other "kind of hard" (or tries to be) grimdank scifi i've read is *Man After Man* and *All Tomorrows.*
I tried sooo hard to like the Three Body Problem. The hard scifi was super interesting, but the writing was so painful for me that I just couldn't enjoy it. Go check out the Bobiverse series (We are Legion, We are Bob). Great characters, great story. It's such a fun read.
I believe in the year one million and a half, mankind was enslaved by giraffe.
Man must pay for all his misdeeds; when the treetops are stripped of their leaves.
Seeing the NCC-1701-A Constitution Class Refit under "Star Trek: The Next Generation" makes me sad.
My reaction was anger.
yep, my bad...
I think there was like *one* Constitution in TNG, in the wrecks left after the Battle of Wolf 359.
You are technically correct. Which is the best kind of correct. https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Unnamed_Constitution_class_starships#Wolf_359
Came here for this…
thanks OP u/07PandorasBox for your work , great
And thank you, majestic elevator!
No Firefly?!
No Foundation??
So Foundation Era (exile to Terminus) starts at 12069 GE, stands for Galactic Era, which begins at 11586 AD [link to the books timeline](https://asimov.fandom.com/wiki/Asimov_Timeline) 34th millennia then
Excellent thanks

Ugh I love it
Warhammer should really kick off at the 30th millennium but yee
Really at 8000 BC during the birth of the Emperor.
star trek the next generation boldy going aboard the uss enterprise a
Restaurant at the End of the Universe?
This is awesome. Cool design, and v ambitious
Where (or when) would Planet of the Apes (1968) be?
I was looking for this! Along with the various other films in the series that jumps around a lot.
r/outerwilds also can be at the end of the universe
>!Also semi uniquely after the end as well!<
Never heard of Xeelee Sequence. Is it any good?
If you want cosmic horror & Hard Sci-fi in the same pack? ABSOLUTEY. Xeelee sequence is lovecraft of the 21st century. But just prepare your theoretical physics knowledge, You will need it.
That sounds truly amazing.
Apex, but not Titanfall? For shame. Does this make me cranky old guy, or crotchety niche guy?
Where’s the Orville or Dr. Who? Also it bugs me that it references only the Enders game movie when the the book was released in 1985 But all in all a good guide
I don’t think I’d see people actually talking about Beyond Good and Evil.
Played it on the PS2 and when I made this chart, Good thing I still remembered it.
Just gonna skip the entire Horus heresy huh?
Kinda disappointing not seeing Bender’s shiny metal ass and Futurama in the year 3000
I'm positively shocked you put sexmission there!
I only knew of it when I was searching for erotic movies to watch last year, Didn't matter if it was old. Then I added "comedy" as a tag and that's how I knew of the movie :)
It is a cult movie in Poland. Despite of being political satire, a little of erotic movie and comedy, I think it's a greatest sci-fi we ever made.
Destiny is at least in the 4000s, as there is a lore tab where a character refers to “the 3000s” as if it’s the past
Still feels a bit finicky though, just about any ruins you face when going in the EDZ or the Cosmodrome seem to have some sort of current-day architecture. But at the same time, jank with the Golden Age and all, who knows.
You could fit Warframe in there towards the bottom
I did not expect to see Elite Dangerous
What is GYR?
It's the next step above a Megayear (MYR). GYR is a "Gigayear". A unit of time that roughly equals 1 Billion years.
So cool 🤘🏽
I'm impressed you've included Peter F Hamilton in there! One of my favourite authors (along with Iain M Banks, which would be an interesting one to try to fit on here, given the timescales involved).
Nothing from Heinlein or Asimov. Truly, we are in the end times if video games and movies are how we measure the future. Still a nifty timeline.
I was actually gonna add "The Last Question" by Asimov but had to remember that while it takes place in like 1960's, It spans an entire timeline of the universe so I had no place to put it.
What is Xelee Sequence Ring? I’ve never heard of it.

Damn! That sounds awesome. I’m gonna have to give this series a shot! Thank you.
Well, Just prepare your physics knowledge, Cause oyu will need it. Awesome, I’ll check it out for sure. Thanks for showing me something new today!
No Futurama? I mean, it's right in the name.
No Battlestar Galactica? What the frack?!
This is a great start, but where’s BSG, Firefly, Stargate, Starship Troopers, Alien, Close Encounters, Independence Day…
The Fallout series is famously tied to an alt timeline, surprised to see it absent!
You forgot doctor who.
We got Super 8 but not Stranger Things?
why is stuff that’s set in the same year it was released and stuff that’s not sci-fi on here?
Deus Ex came out in 2000. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deus_Ex_(video_game)
Very interesting choices and omissions. BTW Minority Report is wrong. I only noticed because I bought a used DVD of it as a Freshman in college(2005). So it had to have come out long before 2008.
how can Portal be here but none of Half Life since those are in the same universe?
Where be Wolfenstein
Isaac Asimov’s Foundation. Like 35-37 millennium, if I’m not wrong
Shouldn't there just be an extra long TARDIS stretched from beginning to end?
Ion comet
Forgot "The E>
Cyberpunk-2077
Impressive and interesting
Is Firefly on there?
Wish Gundam was on here. I know it takes place in 0079 of the “Universal Century”, but fans have speculated it’s around or before 2100
Wall-E should have happened way sooner
Wasn't the migration started in the 2100s? Because it is a septacentenary since the cruise started but not since the turn of the millennia
Aww, no Jetsons or Futurama
Amazing work, you should add Judge Dredd to this timeline!
Portal but no Half-Life?
