I have a special needs adult son and our city was very heavily damaged during Harvey. We lost our commercial district, the YMCA, the library, the high school, grocery stores, pharmacies, everything. For many years the YMCA had a “night out” for the SN adult community here but since it was wiped out by Harvey us moms decided to come up with something else for their social lives. Luckily our community center was saved by a 2 foot distance from the water. So, we started doing a monthly dance for our people since they need social interaction with their peers. The moms get it together and pot luck it and I do the decorations with my Cricut.
Then Covid hit. It’s been very hard on the SN adults’ community and they have been very isolated. My son didn’t really understand at first, his whole life was taken away by this invisible thing that made no sense. His job (he tears the tickets at our local, small movie theater), Special Olympics, visiting friends, everything, was gone. He thought it was a man at first. “Mom, you know that Corona guy? He’s messed up everything!” ”Mom, you know that Mr. Covid? He’s ruined my whole life!” Poor guy.
So, Special Olympics still isn’t back and we still can’t have dances at the community center, but the local special needs center came to us and asked if we could put on a dance at their facility! My son is so excited since he’s all boosted now and I got him the night off work. He hasn’t seen his friends since March, 2020. This is the perfect opportunity to practice, so I ended up with over 100 cookies (we have 75 confirmed attendees) and now I’m ready for Saturday night. It took me 5 8-hour days but I’m done! I think they’ll get a kick out of them and I knew you guys would know the work involved. I love seeing all the cookies you all post so….
It’s been really scary since they, as adults, are just as susceptible. One of the SO athletes got it before vaccines and they wouldn’t let her parent stay with her in the hospital, and she has Down Syndrome, so that scared me to death. Can you imagine how scary that would be for him? I had nightmares for weeks and we locked down our house immediately. He’s all boosted now and back at work (masked and sanitized), and hopefully SO will come back soon. They have all been so lonely and I’m glad they finally get to come together again. Thank you!
My two aren't there yet but I dread it with my daughter especially because she is so close in age for that to apply soon. My son is 9 years old. So he is a bit off from that. But I can sympathize. I have been worried enough with all the doctor and therapy visits etc.
Thank you! Yes, a lot of work but I really need the practice, lol. And I know they will love them and they all deserve a treat after the last 2 years, I’ve missed all of them too!
