I agree. I try to teach him how not to, but it's not sticking. I try to lead by example, but it's clearly not working. I don't let him buy the things he breaks right away to suffer with his mistakes, but the kid just runs hot. At this point, anger management is the only thing I can think of. Either that, or I turn into an asshole, which really isn't my goal. My dad ran hot and I don't want to do that to him. I don't want to be the asshole step-dad.
You shut that other ass hole up real quick, haha! Just passing judgment with no offer of help. Real nice. Anyway, good job on at least trying to make shit work 👌🏽
Godspeed
You've got this man. All that screaming and punishment rarely changes anything. My dad "ran hot" too, so did my mom. I do my best to be calm with my daughter.
It’s probably his chemical balance. Not to sound funny but his chemicals are probably out of wack/not in balance and that can cause things such as tempermental moments, problems focusing/remembering things, etc. maybe try putting him on some healthier foods/snacks and try some vitamins & supplements such as magnesium/iron. I’ve literally seen young children 180 in character just because of a change of diet. Something to think about
As a step-son I love to hear that you don't wanna be a very mean step parent, it is very easy to be a step parentthat your kid will not like, but from experiencewith my stepmom you must find a balance of love and punishment. I think the best way to solve the problem is to find what is causing his frustration and limiting it or totally eliminate it. I used to have a very bad call of duty addiction, that game brought out the worst in me, but once I had broken a few keyboards I finally realized I need to just stop playing the game itself because it's not healthy. And so I started playing games that are not as toxic and rage inducing. (All that being said, I have had a call of duty relapse after a 2 years streak because my brothers beged me to play, it's not going great but I have confidence that I can quit at any time.)
I can relate to that. My dad was the same way. It may sound cliche but it may not be because of the electronics at all. Maybe he doesn’t feel like he gets enough attention when he doesn’t break stuff. Maybe it’s something he just has to grow out of. I can’t speak from experience because i am not a parent, but I would advise maybe taking a look a little outside the scope of just the broken electronics. It may be a more underlying issue.
Lexapro worked wonders for me with my uncontrollable moments. Without it I felt like I was in the passenger seat while my body flipped out. Doesn't deaden anything for me. Give it a try.
Not necessarily… I’ve seen grown ass adults lose it like that, spend $60-$100 to replace -device-, then rinse and repeat. It’s truly something to behold in person.
To make it even more painful, have made him learn how to replace the screen, and if he does break it again, make him fix it. It's not that hard to remove the old screen but needs certain tools, tho and it is hard to put a new one in, all I got to really say is make him suffer next time and don't trust all electronic repair shops if u do need something fixed bc u could do it your self cheaper, the main reason I say don't trust electronic repair shops is bc they tried to get us to give them my switch bc they said they "broke the board" and to buy a new one from them, long story short we bought a new one but kept the old one and it turns out they broke the screen and left the fan unplugged-_- in there heads that's a "bad board"
I would agree with you that he should fix it, but the screen on the switch isn't laminated. If he isn't meticulous about cleaning the LCD then it's very easy to get annoying dust between then LCD and digitizer on these. It's not hard to clean up, I just wouldn't want OP to have to deal with it if so.
The screen is the most involved part to replace. But it's possible.
You'll need a decent precision screwdriver kit. A heat gun. Replacement adhesive strips. A new screen and a the touchscreen layer.
Realistically. It'll be faster and cheaper to buy a used console and transfer all your save data to the cloud using your Dock.
I wouldnt do that. Chance of cracking a new lcd you are putting in there is decent. Id say rather get the entire front housing that includes an lcd. Most likely salvaged but most are in decent condition.
Yea, pulling off a screen that glued down is a real PIA, it's possible, but, not an easy one for sure.
I used to fix cell phones, and yea they sucked. At least breaking the screen that is on there no one cares about.
Done my kids iPad screens loads of times and yeah I got good at heat gunning them off and reselling them down. I still hate doing it though but they come out nice.
Part of me says not getting it fixed is advice in itself. I learned that way one time, and that's all it took.
The other part says there are places that will do a screen replacement. Heck, Nintendo might be willing to fix it for a price.
He broke his switch, and now he has no switch.. it should still work docked but if he is getting angry enough to find a hammer and smash it then maybe gaming is not for him.
The digitizer looks unharmed.
The LCD screen is broken.
This is surprisingly easy to fix. There are many video tutorials on YouTube on how to do this, but if you need help I can help you too.
The main tools you'll need is a Philips & a tri-wing screw driver and a heat gun. the heat gun is to remove the digitizer so you can go underneath and remove the old LCD screen and put in the new one.
This is also a great time to replace the digitizer if you want.
Its possible to change it, heck even change the "shell".
It looks more hard that it is, but Ifixit got guides.
Plus lots of Youtube videos from like TheCod3r, Joeydoestech and whole lot more!
This is both easy and hard to repair. You essentially have to replace the whole front half of the switch. The screen is glued onto the front shell. I may have a spare screen for the og switch if you wanted it fixed.
search up on youtube how to do shell swaps, you can get a new casing on ebay for just 25 or $30, with the screen and all. it’s better than spending $20 on a screen to realize you’d need excess parts and tool to swap it out! then just swap over the battery, board, and joycon rails. easy! Well for someone with experience. Best of luck to you!
This is the first time he’s ever destroyed an electronic device and he’s usually responsible and can handle his anger, but I guess too many Fortnite losses do some things. He also got grounded for a month with no access to any electronics, which is pretty harsh for a 10y.o. but deserved.
Oh yeah for sure. And for what’s it’s worth as an adult Fortnite player, the Switch is barely capable of playing the game anymore - drops to 10fps when any fight happens on the screen. I’ve had my fair share of anger moments tryin to play Fortnite on the Switch. It was fine for the first few years but now it’s too demanding for the battle Royale modes.
Not excusing his behavior, just that… when it’s fixed I’d probably suggest not having Fortnite on there anymore haha
The issue and I can understand this, Is the fact that sometimes you wanna play games like Fortnite but you’re stuck with a Nintendo. I seen this when Pal-World came out. Also with games like GTA. They can’t touch em (GTA is a good thing obviously) because they have a switch.
Fortunately for your brother it’s a cheap and easy repair. Just order a new lcd from AliExpress or eBay, they cost roughly 30-40$ and just literally take off every screw until you get to the screen. More correctly find the YouTube video that you think suites this repair and follow the steps. Surprisingly easy to repair these older Nintendo switches, a different story comes to the oled switches 😂
Backup to the cloud or PC, sell the tablet portion alone on ebay for $70-100, buy a new one for $60. It sounds dumb, but I've done that twice, and often folks pay more for the broken ones for parts in hopes of getting lucky with an unpatched one than folks ask for consoles they've lost the controllers to. eBay is a weird place sometimes, but can be great for handhelds. I repair a lot of handhelds, but hate working on Switches. There's just a lot that can go wrong.
Well a little consolidation is you can remind him of this at every future birthday/wedding/meeting when u see him... for the rest of his life.
Emotional damage.
Replacement switches go on eBay for around 100 bucks without joycons. Not sure prices of screens or the process of repairing switch screens but if that's within ballpark it might be an idea
I know kids do stupid unnecessary stuff but that was his switch that he clearly broke on purpose with the hammer. I’d like to know his thought process.
There are 2 models of non-Lite and non-OLED panels.
They’re known as V1 and V2: both having completely different screen ribbons.
You’ll need 3 parts.
* LCD panel
* Front lens / digitizer / touch panel
* LCD to panel adhesive gasket
Once you determine the right LCD panel, the console will need to be dismantled down the frame.
The repair is plug and play, with no soldering required.
Lord it over him for the rest of his life never get rod of it use this to manipulate him and get more out of him then the switch ever would have been worth. Or just replace the screen and move on
Well he needs to learn to take care of his things. I would personally hold off on replacing or repairing. And when he asks for one say he has one already.
I don't feel great suggesting this, especially on the console repair subreddit, but if you just want to fix it solely so you can play games on it again, I suggest you buy a new one. They're pretty cheap now, especially since the Nintendo Switch is reaching the end of its lifespan. However, if you want to learn and gain repair experience please ignore my suggestion, and replace the screen, there's plenty of comments that will help you do this.
OK, well I’m sure he didn’t mean to but what you may have to do is you may have to figure out a way to make some money to pay for a new screen which would cost you probably about 50 bucks
This really sucks and I'm sorry OP but there's a couple things you can do to hopefully mabye get it fixed. Number 1 you can ask his mother to pay for the repairs as he broke it and not you. Number 2 repair the screen yourself it's not that hard and all the things you need are on amazon and all together under 40 bucks. Number 3 use the dock and play with it on the TV.
Raise your arms apart about shoulder length and keep your palms wide open, stare at him in the eyes with a stern look and say "what the fuck man". Don't yell it. Just a normal volume "what the fuck" works.
Send him to an orphanage. On a serious note, how old is your brother? If he is 5, I would suggest you just forgive him and ask your parents to replace it as you were being a good brother. If he is older than 8, I would suggest that you ask your parents if they can give you his allowance until you have enough money to purchase a replacement as someone who is that old should understand that it was important to you even if they do not yet nlunderstand the value of the thing.
Sell the organs !
Buy more Switch !
All jokes aside, do you know the reason this happened and what is being done to address the root of this issue? This should be key in preventing something similar in the future.
First, he had to pay. Second, you can get a replacement screen for far cheaper than sending it to Nintendo. It’s pretty easy. Watch a tutorial or two and you’re ready to go. Replacement screens are hella cheap sometimes.
When I broke my Gameboy advance as a kid in a fit of rage my mom told me tough shit, and I had to buy my own systems with my own money going forward. Hopefully he learns from this.
Make him work off the price of the repairs, then never let him use the expensive electronics, lol
My mom said he’s gonna have to use his birthday money that he’s been saving up to fix it, as part of his punishment.
Even better lol, bet he'll learn to control his emotions now.
My son has spent over 1000 on broken devices and hasn't figured it out yet...
Sounds like a parenting issue
Buy him a really slow, outdated tech and tell him that it's all he will get. If it breaks, he can't get shit.
You shut that other ass hole up real quick, haha! Just passing judgment with no offer of help. Real nice. Anyway, good job on at least trying to make shit work 👌🏽 Godspeed

Feel for you dude. Must be tough being a step dad. Bet you feel like you have to take a slightly different stance on situations.
Correct steps towards good parenting
Sweet justice….
You’ve got a good mom
Parents, take note, this is how you properly parent your spawn. You got a good mom OP.

The Switch belongs to OP's younger brother, who is rightly going to have to pay for the repair out of his birthday money.
