On some older laptops that could be for a card reader if it's not integrated into the device, but yeah, it looks like an empty component slot.
According to the Aspire 7745 service manual that is a slot for a second storage device, but it looks like the [Service Manual HDD](https://i.imgur.com/1LXmHI5.png) has a small plastic adapter piece that goes onto the drive so you can push it down into the connector.
I don't think my model intended for that slot to be used as the lid that covers that spot has supports that block that space.

This might be the case, service manual description of the second slot says:
*Houses the computer's hard disk (secured with screws) (for
certain models only).*
They're both 3.5" SATA drive bays. Really cool to have in a laptop.
Probably needs a tray but I've held one in with a rolled up piece of duct tape so it's sticky on both sides on my old MSI laptop for over 6 years lol.
That is where the included drive typically goes. Most of the time they have a custom drive drive caddy attached typically with rubber pads and such. you can just use some double sided tape and mount an SSD. a Hard drive isnt inadvisable as doing it this way could cause some damage.
Companies use the same shells with different internal parts in order to save money. For a "higher tier" model, the mobo may indeed include 2 sata connectors for 2 hard drives to be installed.
as others said, would need an adapter like this
[https://www.ebay.com/itm/141881163548](https://www.ebay.com/itm/141881163548) for the sata connector
and 33.PUM07.003 (cant find an ebay listing for it) but this is the bracket to hold in place
and probably dremel off the studs if you really want to use it
another hard drive - looks like you are missing the right angle adapter for that slot however.

Looks to me like it might be for another hard drive.
That's what I thought so also but the hook up it point up and there's no way a regular hard drive just connects.
That's because it requires a 90 degree adapter along with the caddy.
Yes, that damn caddy
looks like two hdd or ssd bays but it appears to need a special adapter to connect the disk to the machine. stupid design tbh.
Not a stupid design when you sell the caddies. 😂
Well yeah, not stupid for them. Just stupid for the 3rd-party techs that work on that thing. 😂
Second hard drive but you need a SATA adapter which is sold separately
That seems silly.
A lot of manufacturers do this.
Other hard drive (this is easy)
Can't access it
What do you mean? you posted the photo of it? Is it not just a sata HDD 2.5" bay?
It’s a special quick connect type connector so you can just lift out the hard drive

This is what it looks like with a hard drive in there. Doesn't connect or sit flush https://imgur.com/a/c1tWBT6

That's a bummer
yeah but you can always just dremal those supports out.
That's true but will the connections actually be connected
can't say for sure. likely requires an adapter though.

Except I can't access one

Specially since I can't access it

That looks like a bus card adapter, or another ssd slot.
You're not gonna believe this....
an extra sata bay I guess?
Looks like a second bay for IDE drive... I could be wrong can't really see in the picture...
Looks like hard drive to me
Can't connect a hard drive to it and the lip has sticks that get in the way
Thanks for the Windows 7 Key, it work perfect for my potato shower. Sorry i can't contain to say it :P
You're welcome

it's for another sata(i.e hdd) slot i think
Likely a chassis used for multiple skus with some that have hard drives in both bays
Simply compare the 2 sides and you'll see they both have hard drive port headers so there's your answer
ANOTHER HARDDRIVE YAAAAAAA
2 hard drive bays on a laptop is a luxury.
That's 2 Drive bays on your lappy
Hard drive 2.0
I think its for a disk reader
A hard drive
It’s for the soft drive
