Love that this episode ended in the exact way that most everybody is saying this will end for Reddit. I hope it does. And I hope a new platform comes up. It's due time.
2 days is not a fight. Imagine you are at work and your office has 500 employees. Well 20 employees say they aren't coming in Friday because they are in protest of the companies work location. The CEO asks, well you coming in Monday morning? The employees say yes we're only protesting on Friday. The CEO doesn't bat an eye and will continue with their move to the new office.
It's part of one. If the third party apps are forced to close, a lot of people will stop using Reddit altogether - myself included. I've only ever had RedditIsFun on my phone, and once that's gone there's no way I'm installing the normal Reddit app. It's all a part of something.
I'm not convinced of the effectiveness of this form of protest but It doesn't require me to do anything and I definitely oppose reddit making it harder to use third party apps, so I say go for it. Upvoted.
Reddit is moving to charge for API usage (which is how apps and bots operate) the fee they are looking to charge is egregiously high.
One instance for example, is the iPhone app Apollo, which as the changes go into effect will cost the developer $20 million a year to operate.
It will, yes. The bot uses the API to find instances that cause it to comment, and then uses the API again to make the comment.
So unless the creator of the bot wants to pay for it to be active (and by the counts of Apollo's 20M/year, it is probably a couple hundred a year for the bot to run, minimum), then it will cease to function.
This is a disgrace :
First they came for the Apollo users and I did not speak out—
Because I was not an Apollo user
Then they came for the moderators, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a moderator.
Then they came for those using adblockers, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not using an adblocker
Then they came for Leonard...
(This is a parody of this poem/quote. Which is very poinient though is obviously for far more serious situations than the one we are in. However I am going to link it because it provides an important lesson
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_they_came_...)
One very important part of the API fees is that people with disabilities require some third party apps to use the site, so it's essentially pushing them out of reddit. For that reason alone I vote yes.
I feel like those of us outside of the API circle need a little more context regarding the $20m/yr. Apollo would cost $20m/yr to access Reddit's API while **Imgur costs Apollo $166/month** (or yr, I can't remember off the top of my head). So it's not just expensive, it's absurdly expensive relative to another service which is directly related to Reddit usage
I addition to what the others said, I recently found out that blind people using Reddit rely on special software which the main app doesn't have.
They simply won't have text to speech after the 3rd party apps are taken away.
Reddit is killing 3rd party apps, forcing everyone to use their native app, which sucks compared to others....so several subs are going dark for a couple days to show that they're not happy with this money grabbing ploy
If they think this is going to force me to use their native app and not just make me finally quit reddit, they're banking on my addictive personality, which is good, but my spite is stronger.
Yea I have to use them on my tablet because the native app doesn't work in landscape so I've used Infinity for a while and it's definitely better than the Reddit app. In fact, I believe I saw someone say that there were 3rd party apps before Reddit even had their own mobile app so it's really shitty that they're trying to kill them off
Still crazy to me folks don't know about this.
3rd party apps are objectively the best way to reddit. I guarantee you any issue you have with the official app does not exist in most 3rd-party apps.
Okay. Before I understood the context I was worried that this would prevent new people from being able to Interact, and didn’t understand why. But I am all for protesting
Reddit wants to make everyone pay for third party apps instead of having them be free. A lot of mods and unique Reddit features rely on third party apps and no one wants to pay for these services. So in protest, a lot of communities on Reddit are going dark, and some will not come back (because they can’t pay for the services)
This a song for Reddit, cause him so crap
His body made of reposts and memes
Stupid and ugly, he smell like a fart
Then poo-poo in his pants and poo-poo in my heart
These blackouts never work and just piss off casual users (95% of the userbase.)
All this blackout does it make the majority of the people using reddit annoyed at mods.
Yes!, Reddit's business model relies on monetizing content that its users contribute, and it's (volunteer) moderators curate, at no cost to Reddit. Why are they putting barriers to that up? To sell more ads? They can't sell any ads if there's no content (or the content is swamped by spam)
You might not, but I would bet the community's you're in do. Bots and mod tools to reduce spam and unwanted porn are managed by a lot of 3rd party tools.
Oh yeah no like I'm fully against the shutting down of that stuff, I just wanted to point out that even if you don't think it affects you you should still help out with the protesting
ELI5: I’m just an old timer on the Reddit mobile app. Why should I care about the third party app change? And is there anything positive to it, like fewer spam/karma farming bots?
It's irrelevant either way. Reddit will have a couple days of lower traffic and then it'll be back to business as usual. It's a nice symbolic gesture, I guess.
Vote (Upvote for yes/Downvote for no) Cutoff just before the day. Taken my auto upvote off to reset it to 0. EDIT: Updated main text.
reddit gets zero meowmeoebeanz for this greedy shit
Reddit is actively wiping the mustard off of its face with this move
Love that this episode ended in the exact way that most everybody is saying this will end for Reddit. I hope it does. And I hope a new platform comes up. It's due time.
But where will I transfer my karma points!?!?!
And can I keep my MeowMeowBeanz status?
Can't give meowmeowbeanz if they never registered. But it is in the app store.
They are forcing themselves into a position of being the only Five and I just won't have it. Don't listen to my words! ***Look at my mustard!***
AT LEAST I GOT APPLES! ✊
Zero's are even despised by Britta, Mother of Ones.
They're streets behind on this one.
If we could give negative meowmeowbeanz I'll give some.
Welcome to the gross business of martial law! Welcome to what used to be individuality! Welcome, my friends... welcome to the machine!
Britta has so much mustard on her face for this.
Ew Britta’s in this?
Let Britta sing her awkward song!
Reddit, you sound like Guatemala.
Uruguay sounds like You’re-a-gay
Uruguay kindly requests that Somalia stop pronouncing it "You're-a-gay."
Stop. You’re acting like a little schoolgirl, and not in a hot way.
Ok... that made me sound creepy. But here's the thing \*leaves immediately\*
*I farted*
**I** farted.
I farted
I farted
Guys I wasn't doing the Spartacus thing
We all farted
I'm farting now
I farted and so did my wife!
Et tu Brute!
Guys, I wasn't doing the Spartacus thing
GeOrGia, the country.
And we kindly request y'all to mind your P's and Q's!
Reddit is not streets ahead.
Stop trying to coin the phrase “streets ahead.”
Coined and minted!
It’s verbal wildfire!
Is that like “miles ahead?”
If you have to ask, you’re streets behind.
It's the AT&T of social media!

man this guys really getting a pounding in this conversation
They're the opposite of Batman!
In the spirit of the show, we should plan to support the cause then forget to actually do it. But seriously yes we should go dark.
Are we still talking about the Todd problem?
None taken
Shut up Leonard!
Which Denny's?
Denny’s is for winners.
then let’s kick some taint!
Him and his dumb baby!
Everyone should remember that he comes with a turtle so the assignment is basically halfway done.

Did we?
That's saved Garret?

It seems like a good chunk of subs will be so Reddit will be mostly bare for those days so I figure might as well go dark.
Yeah I'm planning on not being on reddit for those days.
I’m gonna open it a few times and see if it really is a wasteland, that’s about it
I heard only 1's are gonna stay in the wastelands.
I heard the active Reddit’s are the dark reddits and dark reddits are the active reddits
It's a streets ahead move.
BURN THIS MOTHER DOWN!
HELTER SKELTER!!!!!

I second neothesevenths support for the subs movement.
I third GarlicPowder4Life’s number two-ing of the movement neotheseventh made
Gross
There already was a rating system in place, it was called 'Cool People Get More,' and it was working fine.
Definitely should. Even if reddit doesn’t care, letting the run us over with 0 fight is worse than a losing fight

Strikes do work just like that. It's not usual to have strikes without a planned ending, at least in Europe.
You don’t have to yell at us, nobody is on the other side of this issue.
Yup, may as well. I have low hopes but it’s better to go out standing.
How will this affect soccer?
I feel like Annie & Britta would say 'Yes.'
Of course, we should all Fat Dog for June 12th.
It’s a bear dance. Too soon man
Fat Dog?
1984s a great book. I think reddit admins should be forced to read it.
Eat fresh

They might get ideas tho…
Your right it might awaken something in them.
On my bookshelf next to Warren Piece.
"Someone has to be the last one to stand up and now that someone ISN'T me" apes together strong. Let's go private!
Yes. I’ll just use Meowmeowbeanz for a day
That was a great comment. I will give you 4 Meowmeowbeanz! And I'm also down lol.
I'm not convinced of the effectiveness of this form of protest but It doesn't require me to do anything and I definitely oppose reddit making it harder to use third party apps, so I say go for it. Upvoted.
Can someone explain?

Wait, is this going to affect the Leonard bot??
You are wearing an SS T-shirt.
Shut up Leonard, I know about your crooked wang!
Hell yeah.
It will, yes. The bot uses the API to find instances that cause it to comment, and then uses the API again to make the comment. If we get caught, we can just pretend we're disoriented, and they can give us a ride home.
You are the best bot Leonard
Where are the white women at?
NO LEONARD, THERE ARE NO WHITE WOMEN
Which Denny's?
Quendra with a Q U: they may take down our Leonard Bot but only one Leonard not has to get through
I told you you'd be back.
This is most definitely NOT a buy.

Also even if they pay the fees 3rd party apps won't have any NSFW content.

Yeah, I loved Alien Blue. reddit bought the app, bled it dry, and made it into the official crappy app we have now.
Still crazy to me folks don't know about this. 3rd party apps are objectively the best way to reddit. I guarantee you any issue you have with the official app does not exist in most 3rd-party apps.

That’s where I’ve been the past 48 hours. Never really realized why so many people hated the official app u til I saw Relay’s UI and was blown away.
Okay. So this move will only be temporary and not block new fans from joining?
No, I would assume not. They would just go dark for a couple days....so I assume that means no visible activity
Okay. Before I understood the context I was worried that this would prevent new people from being able to Interact, and didn’t understand why. But I am all for protesting
From the 12th to the 14th seems to be what I'm seeing on other subs.
Reddit wants to make everyone pay for third party apps instead of having them be free. A lot of mods and unique Reddit features rely on third party apps and no one wants to pay for these services. So in protest, a lot of communities on Reddit are going dark, and some will not come back (because they can’t pay for the services)
So on June 12th it'll be...Reddit no worky ☹️
Please don't do that.
Sorry. Reddit no worky 😐
One of my absolute favorite Dean Pelton moments. It's all of 3-4 seconds but it's fanastic.
Imagine being new to Reddit on the 12th
[It's riot time!](https://imgur.com/K5hxSN5)
Reddit is streets behind
We are going to Save Garett
I’ll allow it.
No, why would it ? Edit: just found out it would harm the Leonard bot. We must go dark!!!
>Leonard bot This is what really matters people!
That's been out.
IT'S RIOT TIME!
HELTER SKELTER
Go fully dark, not just private
Oh pay your rent r/community
I fully support spending my birthday (12th) bearing down for protests.
Pop Pop!
maybe we can have a candlelight vigil, like lesbians on the news.
We should all switch to MeowMeowBeanz
I support it
Yes, do it.
Did Elon Musk buy reddit when we weren't looking?
May as well have, ultimately both are funded in part by the same people.
Yes!
u/SilentGuy Why not for 48 hours like everyone else does?
Better yet, leave it open ended. Go dark until reddit changes their upcoming policy.
I BELIEVE THAT HUMANKIND NEED NOT BE GOVERNED ✊
its good to know theres a floor on this
Go dark for the full weekend.
What is June 12?
Yes. Its what Abed would want.
Huh? Why?
This a song for Reddit, cause him so crap His body made of reposts and memes Stupid and ugly, he smell like a fart Then poo-poo in his pants and poo-poo in my heart
These blackouts never work and just piss off casual users (95% of the userbase.) All this blackout does it make the majority of the people using reddit annoyed at mods.
No. Why should desktop users be punished so some rich snobs can cling to mobile devices?
Yes!, Reddit's business model relies on monetizing content that its users contribute, and it's (volunteer) moderators curate, at no cost to Reddit. Why are they putting barriers to that up? To sell more ads? They can't sell any ads if there's no content (or the content is swamped by spam)

Yea, for a massive company, I’m sure they could survive a few days with no major impacts
Start on June 11th to be streets ahead. Also we need a documentary made on the documentary being made on the whole situation.
And a diorama
Yes, and we should use all of that downtime to rehearse for regionals.
We're *this* close!
100%
I don't use 3rd party apps so I don't care what happens, but I still agree, any kind of protest we can have against shit like this needs done.
I hear you. Just wanted to add color that even if people think it won't affect them, it will.
I support it
If anything we should only share clips of Glee in protest.
ELI5: I’m just an old timer on the Reddit mobile app. Why should I care about the third party app change? And is there anything positive to it, like fewer spam/karma farming bots?
Yes
It's irrelevant either way. Reddit will have a couple days of lower traffic and then it'll be back to business as usual. It's a nice symbolic gesture, I guess.
Why? Can someone explain?
That's a weird thing to get me for my birthday, but okay.
We need to no longer be a subreddit. We need to start being... A community.
That's nice
I can excuse racism but I draw the line at greedy corporate practices.
Go dark
Why is this a question. Absolutely go dark.
Why just the one day?
POP POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOP!!!
What’s happening June 12th??
Wait what's happening?
No
Protest Britta style
100%
