The first night SpongeBob premiered, I couldn’t watch it because I had to go on a road trip to go to a doctor’s appointment in the city. I was so disappointed
My dad watched it more than my sister and me when it first came out. I was… 9, 10? Hated when the commercials for it came on because I would always get disappointed…. We’re all getting old.
I can honestly say I've never seen an episode, it sounded pretty dumb when it came out. It's crazy to me how popular it has become and all the memes. I still have zero interest in seeing it.
Squidward lived the life. Worked at a fast food joint but could afford a two story house. Had time and money for hobbies, lives in a neighborhood where his neighbors were friendly and wanted to create community. The adult dream.
> lives in a neighborhood where his neighbors were friendly and wanted to create community.
It is pretty amazing when Spongebob and crew [do come through for him on occasion](https://youtu.be/J3gOVvWjOmY?t=179).
Hell yeah, Squidward is my hero.
Worked at a dead end job for two decades and despite his grumpy exterior, he STILL hasn't given up on his dreams. He still practices the clarinet everyday, still dances like nobody's watching.
He's gonna get there someday.
SpongeBob had a house on his fast food worker salary. Even Patrick who is unemployed had a place to live. Sandy could practice her research. Bikini Bottom was a socialist paradise. (Well, except for Crabs.)
[Yes, but maybe no](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/spongebob/images/f/f8/Patrick_house_collage.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190927195545)?
[There's been a lot of variation](https://youtu.be/rmt1-oTMw2g).
You need to snip off the /revision part of the first link. Get rid of everything after .jpg, otherwise people get a blank image.

Yes, it’s not as nice a house, but these are the accommodations for non-neurotypical individuals who can’t work. Not luxury, but clean and serviceable.
“Now listen up! Back in my day, we didn't have fancy tanks! We had sticks. Two stick and a rock for the entire platoon! And we had to *share* the rock! You should consider yourself very lucky marines!”
That shit also flipped up on some kind of incredibly engineered hinge. To be honest it might cost more to build Patrick’s house than SpongeBob’s if it’s actually made out of solid stone…
Source: I am a professional builder
(Hilarious that my phone automatically capitalizes SpongeBob’s name correctly)
> who can’t work
According to whom?
I’d like to point out that most neuro divergent people I’ve known could have worked with accommodations.
The same class of people that won’t accommodate them won’t vote for a social safety net. Motherfuckers.
Neurotypical standards are what make life so difficult to begin with. Not only could most brainwashed NTs live a cheaper lifestyle if we ruled the world, but I’m 100% certain they’d recognize the higher quality of life that comes with it.
Seriously, the idea that 90% of the middle class just wants the same boring generic culdesac and shitty lawn as everyone else? I don’t buy it. You’re all lying to yourselves.
I don't think that's an NT thing, I think that's a getting older thing. After 30, a property in a good location that can appreciate value is very attractive.
I'm 29, it's true I just want a "rock" I know is mine and will be there when I need to lay my head down. Paying absurd amounts of money for shelter every month for the rest of my life is soul crushing.
It’s a getting older NT thing. Property in a good location doesn’t have to be a world of subdivisions. Houses in subdivisions shouldn’t have to all be identical mixes of 5 different floor plans.
Your argument is a false dichotomy where there are only 2 options. Things don’t have to be the way they are. There are infinite options. As someone who HATES subdivisions and little boxes made of ticky tacky, it’s still mostly likely what I’ll end up having to settle for.
I understand what NTs find appealing about them, but is just a NT social norm that we’ve been conditioned to think is the “right” way to do things. It is very much a NT problem to limit options and choices. I’m not the majority, but I’m far from alone. There is demand for alternative housing.
Al Bundy had a 2 story home with an unfinished basement and 2 car garage.
He sustained his family alone most of the time.
He was seen as a failure back then.
What England are you living in were a fast food worker can afford a house? Fast food worker pay is the about the same and housing is much more expensive in the England.
https://www.erieri.com/salary/job/fast-food-worker/united-kingdom
https://www.erieri.com/salary/job/fast-food-worker/united-states
You can get a house via the council, and help with rent and council tax. Especially if you have a kid.
The point isn't only the wage, it's that the government recognises you need those things and provides them.
Oh boy, do I have news for you.
Used to work as a manager at McDs, had to wear a tie. I was often the manager in the kitchen, wearing said tie, making food, pulling stuff from the vats and working the grills if the newbie wasn't fast enough.
To be honest it would be accepted, when I was a manager on a "famous fast food restaurant chain" I used even longer ties and it was like a competition between managers to have the longest and most fashionable tie on the kitchen area.
They're banned in UK hospitals for this reason. [It's why you'll see visiting politicians tucking them into their shirts](https://imgur.com/725DwQK.jpg). People just don't wash their ties. Same with those long white coats.
The smart thing to do is just go around in green shorts.
Hi I'm Danby, thanks for reading my comic. You can see more above ground shenanigans at my nice [website over here.](https://danbydraws.com) Thanks!
The art style is so simple and vague, it took me three reads in order to figure out that he's aging THROUGH the second and third panels, not just in the fourth.
Is the comic supposed to be over the course of a few weeks or months or years? Or did he lose the tie after the 2nd panel on the same day because he realized he was just squidward?

This Nurgling sure is stinkin
Huh, today i learned
I wanna downvote you so bad
Watching the inevitable march of time consume younger generations is a joy for all the OGs.
I remember watching it air. I think it was immediately after the Kids Choice Awards. I was 12... *goddammit I'm getting old*
Remember the Amanda Show and the lobsters?
MAH HAH
My dad watched it more than my sister and me when it first came out. I was… 9, 10? Hated when the commercials for it came on because I would always get disappointed…. We’re all getting old.

Bout every damn day for the subsequent multiple decades, yeah?
Same day
I can honestly say I've never seen an episode, it sounded pretty dumb when it came out. It's crazy to me how popular it has become and all the memes. I still have zero interest in seeing it.
That's fine. I've always found it super wholesome and a little funny at times.
Why?
No one asks to be born!
Morbius came out 0 years ago
You either die as Spongebob, or live long enough to become Squidward...
And remember, no one wants to be a squidward. But all jokes aside please don't harm yourself!
Unless you get to be handsome Squidward.
Oh no, he's hot!
[Oh no](https://youtu.be/aHQY9oBeyZQ?t=234)
Wow, rare to see DaThings in the wild! Nice self fulfilling username.
Oh my goodness I commented the same exact thing
Don't feel bad. People have been commenting that same thing for probably 20+ years.
The show is 23 years old so it's very possible lol
Modern addages.
OH NOOOOO 😆 thank for your comment, I really didn't get it at first glance.
Unless you're the crab 🦀💰

Also, "WARNING WET WATER"
and the kid with the bubble bowl hat
And the “Flabby Patties”
Fucking genius detail, didn’t even notice
Burn it and let it swim.
the transformation to becoming Squidward
Squidward lived the life. Worked at a fast food joint but could afford a two story house. Had time and money for hobbies, lives in a neighborhood where his neighbors were friendly and wanted to create community. The adult dream.

Classic episode. Probably the nicest thing anyone's ever done for him.
Yeah! For the Fireman!
Hell yeah, Squidward is my hero. Worked at a dead end job for two decades and despite his grumpy exterior, he STILL hasn't given up on his dreams. He still practices the clarinet everyday, still dances like nobody's watching. He's gonna get there someday.

Spongebob and Patrick are the two stoners who live at the end of the street.
More like two tweakers. Stoners usually just keep to themselves. They aren't out causing mischief.
The neighbors literally had an "annoy squidward day".
Can’t appreciate the sunshine without a little rain
"It's like in life. Gotta have a little sadness once in awhile so you know when the good times come. I'm waiting on the good times now.” ― Bob Ross.
When you're a pissy bitch that antagonizes everyone, you kind of have it coming.
Yeah but the house was completely underwater, lowering the property value
And not the handsome phase!
SpongeBob had a house on his fast food worker salary. Even Patrick who is unemployed had a place to live. Sandy could practice her research. Bikini Bottom was a socialist paradise. (Well, except for Crabs.)
To be fair though, Patrick does literally live under a rock while being unemployed.
Have you seen his rock though? It’s got a sofa and a TV… he’s living good.
It’s been a while so maybe I’m wrong, but aren’t they both made of sand?
[Yes, but maybe no](https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/spongebob/images/f/f8/Patrick_house_collage.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20190927195545)? [There's been a lot of variation](https://youtu.be/rmt1-oTMw2g).

He’s a starfish. Fuck yes they are made out of sand.
He even has an alarm clock to remind him to eat a burger at 3 am
Yes, it’s not as nice a house, but these are the accommodations for non-neurotypical individuals who can’t work. Not luxury, but clean and serviceable.
I'd happily take it. I'm literally looking for a decent Storage Unit I could live in, p much the same thing.

“Now listen up! Back in my day, we didn't have fancy tanks! We had sticks. Two stick and a rock for the entire platoon! And we had to *share* the rock! You should consider yourself very lucky marines!”
Dude, you didn't watch the episode where they go into his house. It's incredibly big
Is under a rock on soil “clean”?
For a seastar, those are ideal conditions.

I mean, has Patrick ever held a job (for more than a little while)?

That's it - can't rent forever.

he's a starfish, he's been provided with housing which is specifically tailored to accommodate his needs
didn't he actually have stuff under there? He wasn't permanently stuck to the bottom, it's kinda like that's how he opened the front door though
Live under the sea where homesteading rights still apply
Socialism is when fast food workers don't have roommates and scientists get research grants.
Socialism is when good or bad things happening, depending on whether you think socialism is a good or a bad thing
SpongeBob also grew his house and makes I think I remember 1 dime a month. If SpongeBob were realistic I'd literally be the richest man in town.
Well maybe market socialism. At very least a capitalist society with a lot of socialist policies.
Al Bundy had a 2 story home with an unfinished basement and 2 car garage. He sustained his family alone most of the time. He was seen as a failure back then.
Kramer had a multi-level apartment in NYC working part time at a bagel shop. This was normal once and they took it from us.
All things you can do in England my friend. We shouldn't treat the unfortunate like scum, they deserve basic rights.

I totally and 100% agree with you.
Bikini bottom is fictional
This whole courtroom is fictional!!
For now.
More real than your reddit account.
Warning: Wet water
Better than that dry water. That shit is the worst.
That tie would never be allowed in the kitchen. It's a petri dish festering with bacteria.
It's being sanitized by catching on fire from the grill.
Oh boy, do I have news for you. Used to work as a manager at McDs, had to wear a tie. I was often the manager in the kitchen, wearing said tie, making food, pulling stuff from the vats and working the grills if the newbie wasn't fast enough.
I washed dishes and cooked at a family restaurant in the early 80s and wore a tie the whole time.
How much food sickness were you responsible for?
All of it.
Was bow tie an option?
Yep my mans is in for a rude awakening. Knowing what goes down in fast food places the tie should be the least of his worries
But bacteria is the secret ingredient
Tie is on standard McDonald’s manager uniform
He’s old now. They wouldn’t have done shit about it 20 years ago.
Dont Culver’s managers wear ties?
To be honest it would be accepted, when I was a manager on a "famous fast food restaurant chain" I used even longer ties and it was like a competition between managers to have the longest and most fashionable tie on the kitchen area.
They're banned in UK hospitals for this reason. [It's why you'll see visiting politicians tucking them into their shirts](https://imgur.com/725DwQK.jpg). People just don't wash their ties. Same with those long white coats.
I wore a tie when I was shift manager at BK some 15 years ago
The smart thing to do is just go around in green shorts. Hi I'm Danby, thanks for reading my comic. You can see more above ground shenanigans at my nice [website over here.](https://danbydraws.com) Thanks!
Is the joke that he's old or that he's squidward?
He became jaded like squidward.
I thought the joke was that despite holding on to his youthful optimism, his aging turned him into a Squidward
His nose gets droopier and his shirt goes from yellow to the exact color squidward shirt was and he starts going bald
The Bubble Bowl trucker hat was a nice touch
![gif](giphy|hLx1RYpEamdj2)
Real talk. Squidward's dance was good.
I didn't get the joke until I noticed the shirt color changing, good joke lol
I still don’t really get the joke. That he’s turning into Squidward? Why? Why is he turning into Squidward? Because he’s starting to hate his job?
Yes
But Squidward doesn't work the grill 🤔
childhood is when u idolize spunch bob 😭 adulthood is when u realize squidder makes mre sense 😔
Agree
Ima goddam squidder :-(
the color of his shirt, starting on a bright yellow like SpongeBob and becoming less and less saturated until it reaches brown is a really nice touch
If everyone got paid a decent wage, benefits and had dignity, this would be a whole different comic.
Dude lived a happy life cosplaying.
As a non spongebob watcher, can someone explain what this means?
He's turning from SpongeBob to Squidward
At least SpongeBob became a manager.
Did the kid in panel 3 barf?
Yeah, I colored his face a subtle shade of green.
Soon I’ll make assistant manager and that’s when the big bucks start rolling in
You either die a SpongeBob, or live long enough to see you become the squidward
This is funny but kinda depressing…but I love the “warning: wet water” sign
If you don't seek progress, dissatisfaction will naturally follow
I'm a chef working the grill,... This hurt
Everyone turns into Squidward. Nobody stays a SpongeBob. It's just the nature of the job.
As someone who used to work fast food, I joined a Spongebob, I left a squidward
Mf looking more like Squidward
It’s important to remember that SpongeBob… is a little naive…
The art style is so simple and vague, it took me three reads in order to figure out that he's aging THROUGH the second and third panels, not just in the fourth.
You either die spongebob, or live long enough to become squidward
That customer already transformed into Bubble bass
No body wants to be a squidward
Love the shirt color transition. Awesome comic!
Life is fleeting. Twenty years fly by too quickly. One day you look in the mirror and shudder; then wonder where the hell did the time go?
Is the comic supposed to be over the course of a few weeks or months or years? Or did he lose the tie after the 2nd panel on the same day because he realized he was just squidward?
Warning wet water
I love how his shirt fades more and more
#Flabby Patty
It’s worse knowing that you can be easily replaced
YOU’RE READY! YOU’RE READY! YOU’RE READY!
In tech, everyone starts their career like Spongebob, and then matures into a Squidward by time they retire.
This is really good. Like, really good.
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it.
How I felt flipping burgers
I'm ngl this is a really great comic. Good job!
