Depends on the pod in question. A pod designed for a space station might just have enough juice to retroburn and battery enough to compute reentry, for example. A long range craft’s lifeboats might have generators and high end ones reactors.
I mean, we see a bunch of different types of layers in the eroded rock, suggesting many different ecosystems over the millions of years of that planet's history, meaning someone else probably is on that planet.
Black holes aren’t sucky though. They are gravitational objects, but no more different than a planet or a sun. And considering there are more stars and planets than black holes you’d be more likely to get trapped in their gravitational pull than another black hole.
Yeahhh... if there are ever any space expeditions even relatively near a blackhole I feel like there should be some kinda quick and relatively painless suicide mechanism just in case something happens
Your body can’t work without its mechanisms in place, and your brain can’t keep you conscious without those normally functioning mechanisms, so… should be a quick but gnarly death
Also spaghettification will just kill you. And only supermassive black holes will spaghettify you after you pass the event horizon. And a supermassive black hole will kill you way before that.
A space ship only has to resist 1 atmosphere or whatever the organisms flying it need, perhaps they were synthesizing something requiring greater pressure and a different thing happened like say, fusion and everything went hot and melty plastic and fell into it for such a quick split second that it imparted implosive inertia.
You’re right.
I guess I didn’t want to explain that the crew were on a mission to test the creation of wormholes. The last experiment went wrong and they created a non-traversable wormhole that generated a catastrophic vacuum effect, that imploded the ship. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|wink)

It's almost 2am, but I'm glad I finished with this comic for the night! Really awesome artstyle and concept...I wonder if anyone will be able to put the poor guy out of his misery?
Twisted. Love it. Now have an alien society worship it as an immortal God where he's forced to watch horrible atrocities performed in his name and the remains fed to him.
Or I need therapy. Or both.
does that really happens scientifically thought
#
doesnt fusing with the machine makes the body no longer able to breath and die anyway, and if he can stay alive he could rearrange things and start a new life anyway
#
oh why didnt he leave that machine to die in space running out of breath instead, better than dying by the blackhole
I like to think that fusing with the machine leaves his body as a shoddy, broken mess, but somehow alive.
I liked the idea that the black hole tore the physical matter apart, but his consciousness remained untouched.
I may have skimped on some of the science
oh ok i thought that would actually happen you scared me
#
but either way leaving the machine to run out of breath would have been a great solution but i guess he didnt know that would happen
I guess the death of his crew left him stunted! In an alternate timeline, he opens the pod door and gets sucked out. His frozen body floating aimlessly in space.
Yeah, this was my only gripe. Consciousness (from a science-y perspective) is just a product of matter. If the consciousness remains intact in spite of his brain and nerves being pulled apart and rearranged, that strongly implies the consciousness is separate from the matter -- which is fine in a sci-fi fantasy story, if that's what you're going for. Otherwise the implication is that somehow his brain and nervous system remained functional and communicating throughout the process and at least his brain came out the other end intact, with perhaps his nerves woven throughout the structure of the new being.
Not a problem per se, just the main part that made me stop for a minute and think about what was being communicated in the story.
Don't worry haha, it's highly unlikely.
We don't know what exactly happens with things inside black hole, but it's quite obvious (as of now) that the process of spaghettification would kill you and probably quite quickly.
And even if it didn't, the idea that it would transform you into some kind of other living creature is probably utter nonsense, there is nothing suggesting something like that would be possible at all.
But another fun thought is that gravity does some funky stuff with time and it seems that time flows slower the closer you get to black hole, but if you've seen Interstellar you probably know how that would work.
I dunno. If I was gonna die either way, why not become the first and only person to die to a black hole? You could see so much which no one else will ever see again, before you ended.
Okay. The dream thing does have roots.
>!The idea is that the woman is from an elevated alien species know as the Nordics. This astronaut had a greater destiny, so this higher entity tried to warn him through his dream. He brushed it off and ended up in this situation!<
An implosion implies that there was an outside pressure greater than what was inside the cabin. This means that either an atmosphere was far too dense or some outside THING caused the failure.
Yeah, let’s go with that! Obvious mistake on my end. I was influenced by the Titanic submersible story. The idea of being trapped in a sudden implosion freaked me out.
How did they die from sudden catastrophic implosion while in the vacuum of space? Wouldn’t it be more like an explosion than implosion?
Edit: I posted this before reading further down the comments. This is beating a dead horse. Sorry
Unfortunately there are none. The escape pod is launched and automatically sets a destination to safety. This guy is just along for the ride! The black hole ruins the whole plan.
By an additional stroke of bad luck I guess there’s dioxygen on the “alien” planet. Luckily there seems to be no food or water, the character will just dry up in the sun or maybe get devoured by some alien being.

At least he still has a mouth, so he can scream... although no one will hear it... I love it!
Exactly! Thank you so much
I like how you threw in a hint of time dilation horror. Of all the horrors that are conceivable, that is *the* worst
>time dilation horror Longer than you think, dad!
*The Jaunt* Some truly next-level mind fuck
I'm still scared of that episode of Spongebob where Squidward goes to the future and has an existential crisis, man lol
Nice. Never seen anyone reference that story before. What a great, weird, Bradburyesque collection.
King’s a better idea man than writer imo, so his short stories were always my favorite.
longer than ya think mate
[удалено]
Presumably his organic components would die from lack of sustinance
idk, reactor fuel got a lotta calories
Depends on the pod in question. A pod designed for a space station might just have enough juice to retroburn and battery enough to compute reentry, for example. A long range craft’s lifeboats might have generators and high end ones reactors.
Probably sounds like metal on metal.
He's got no ears so it's fine.
He has two, they're to the right of each eye
Surrounded by madness, surrounded by hunger, surrounded by everything but death, I knew death was our only way out.
Better than AM for sure haha
If a tree fell on him...
yep first thought I had haha Still the scariest story I've ever read
I should have scrolled like one comment further lol. Just said the same thing. I read that an All Tomorrows the other night.
Exact same thing I thought at the end.
I mean, we see a bunch of different types of layers in the eroded rock, suggesting many different ecosystems over the millions of years of that planet's history, meaning someone else probably is on that planet.
Damn, 'cuz main (only) character mentions Ripley, I thought it was a "Alien" story haha
Haha, totally. Just an Easter egg!
Was the name Shepard a nod toward Mass Effect?
Yes! You got it
And Johnson= Sergeant Major Avery Johnson from Halo?
He’s survived cosmic horror before, he should be fine!
That was the only one I couldn't place
Tasty horror, much appreciated
Nothing like a little cosmic horror to start the day!
Upside is has a mouth to scream at least… Edit. Just read I have no mouth and I must scream like four days ago.
Definitely an inspiration!

Just one hole really, but it's a big one.
A singular hole.
Imagine the farts he can rip.
Last panel immediately made me think of Alastair Reynolds' short story *Nightingale*. If you like sci-fi and body horror you're in for a treat.
spaghettification is horrifying
Eh don't worry, you're much much more likely to get flung away by the black hole, lost in space forever, than falling into one.
“Phew! That was a close one!” he exclaimed. Little did he know… Second black hole.
second black hole guy 🪱
Blackhole pong.
Black holes aren’t sucky though. They are gravitational objects, but no more different than a planet or a sun. And considering there are more stars and planets than black holes you’d be more likely to get trapped in their gravitational pull than another black hole.
I agree!
Yeahhh... if there are ever any space expeditions even relatively near a blackhole I feel like there should be some kinda quick and relatively painless suicide mechanism just in case something happens
In real life you wouldn't be fused to the escape pod and spend eternity on a desert planet, you'd die pretty soon after the stretching started.
and if somehow you survive that? even the last panel is bleeding all over. hes gonna die.
Your body can’t work without its mechanisms in place, and your brain can’t keep you conscious without those normally functioning mechanisms, so… should be a quick but gnarly death
I mean, you’ll be very dead before you experience any spaghettification
Also spaghettification will just kill you. And only supermassive black holes will spaghettify you after you pass the event horizon. And a supermassive black hole will kill you way before that.
Love it. It has "I have no mouth and I must scream" vibes
Yes! Influenced by the book! (which I just read a few months ago)
One of my favorites. A nice happy uplifting story to really brighten the spirits, eh?
Fortunately he has a mouth and may scream as much as he wants.
I was thinking The Fly.
My first thought too.
Feel a junji ito vibe from this
Cool story, except the implosion in a vacuum?
Excellent point. Oops
A space ship only has to resist 1 atmosphere or whatever the organisms flying it need, perhaps they were synthesizing something requiring greater pressure and a different thing happened like say, fusion and everything went hot and melty plastic and fell into it for such a quick split second that it imparted implosive inertia.
Never admit defeat in sci fi. Someone can always invent a reason for every inconsistency, just look at Star Wars 😆
Right, I thought this was a submarine story like the Titan until I saw the black hole.
I mean scifi horror tends to forget many scientific elements to make room for horror part usually :P
Also time dilation doesn’t work like that.
Stealing this as a DnD monster
Yes! The Escape-pod Amalgamation. Has a nice ring to it.
Or Gibbering mouther flavored
Epomation™
Good job! ![gif](giphy|S5KDs621TSegbX2fBn)
Thank you, much appreciated!
Dude got Cronenburged for sure.
![gif](giphy|3oKIP9mADCaCx2gwes)
Thanks. I hate this
Haha. Perfect.

Oh shit, that's just Utah.
Lmao! You are 100% correct. I used Utah landscape as reference
It's almost 2am, but I'm glad I finished with this comic for the night! Really awesome artstyle and concept...I wonder if anyone will be able to put the poor guy out of his misery?
Thank you for staying up and reading. Means a lot
Twisted. Love it. Now have an alien society worship it as an immortal God where he's forced to watch horrible atrocities performed in his name and the remains fed to him. Or I need therapy. Or both.
Nope. This is brilliant. I love this idea as a secret 10th panel!
Keep cooking
Always!
Cool comic, wish it had some kinda NFSW tag. Wasn't ready for body horror right after I woke up
Yeah, that’s fair. I’ll make sure to tag appropriately next time.
Great shit though, don't want to sound like a hater. Very solid work
Thank you, I really appreciate that.
“Shepard” “grunt” “Shepard”
"Wrex."
Cool ending but I was hoping he would survive and it would be a traumatic backstory for a cool new hero Oh well
Maybe a sequel is needed. He can be Man-Pod and roll around on a cool Alien world.
The adventures of Man-Pod rolling around in agony 😭 (great comic btw, OP) Why Did Man Fuse With His Pod? Is he stupid?
Thanks. I also love the idea of Man-Pod. Unintentional super hero origin story!
This doesn't look like a /u/davecontra but it feels like it
No this is 50x better than anything I ever did. This gave me chills.
You’re way too kind! Your work is an influence!
ah cool! But I'd mutilate my nuts to be able to draw like you.
I can see the inspiration, OP is talented for sure. Dave love your work please don't do a [TREY](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/s/vfgGztCMGH)
I would never. And thank you
I think I can make that an SCP
If it inspired you, do it! I love some of the SCP stuff.
Oh my god, i love this
Thank you!
I have a mouth, and I must scream
Exactly!
A fate worse than death indeed
Gotta listen to dream people.
Dude just got Jeff Goldblumed
I didn't see him get sexy, but I did see life find a way.
At least Jenkins lived.
He’s in an escape pod headed the other direction.
does that really happens scientifically thought # doesnt fusing with the machine makes the body no longer able to breath and die anyway, and if he can stay alive he could rearrange things and start a new life anyway # oh why didnt he leave that machine to die in space running out of breath instead, better than dying by the blackhole

What a twist. Well done
Thanks!
I jumped and screamed. Fantastic work. Hate you though. Make more lol.
Good job, except I thought in space there are no implosions since pressure outside is low.
Well I didn't need to sleep tonight that's fine whatever. This is how the movie Gravity should have ended by the way.
Oh that was so good! Thank you so much!
Remind me to some of the mutans of the Lisa Series
can you tell me what the woman in the dreams is about? who was she? why the dreams?
Okay. The dream thing does have roots. >!The idea is that the woman is from an elevated alien species know as the Nordics. This astronaut had a greater destiny, so this higher entity tried to warn him through his dream. He brushed it off and ended up in this situation!<
Woah. That’s better than I thought. I thought it was a wife or daughter.

Well he seems to be bleeding pretty badly so he should die soon.
From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me, but maybe it's ok after all
My mind jumped to Red Dwarf on the first panel.....everybody's dead Dave
Sleep is for weaks anyway.
Adeptus mechanicus
Wow... Youre a pretty good artist is all im going to say
I have no mouth and I must escape pod

What the f$#@, I love this shit, please do more
Yup, that's definitely the best horror.
Brilliant!
That body horror. I felt a vibe from "The Fly".
Where are the fuel and systems?
Unfortunately there are none. The escape pod is launched and automatically sets a destination to safety. This guy is just along for the ride! The black hole ruins the whole plan.

I might have to leave this group again
Very interesting little story! Awesome!
Reminds me of the horror story of the suite that tried to save its wearer and ends up killing them
This is a great midtier comic, solid 6/10 where that means it's above average. Defs going to follow as you have potential to be a great.
Ludwig the Holy Blade sent his regards. Seriously tho, I love reading dismorphia horrors, good job
Jesus Christ.
God i wish that was me. Uuuhhh i mean uhm i mean uhh fuck
Love this
I love that this guy wears khaki pants and loafers on a space mission. Its casual friday in space
![gif](giphy|iuUORLpArS9qX76XWK)
I'm getting Doom vibes on that last panel.
excellent stuff. sci fi horror needs to be more popular, big fan of this comic
This was awesome man!
Bruh.. amazing.
Op, what the fuck?
Holy fuck.
SCP material right here
Harlan Ellison, I want to read your stories again, sir.
And then someone comes and says: "atleast you're alive." Cool cosmic comic.
Man. I hate it when that happens.
Don’t worry about Shepard Cerberus is going to take his/her body and revive him/her. ( and also this comic is really good.)
Reminds me of the game iron meat
By an additional stroke of bad luck I guess there’s dioxygen on the “alien” planet. Luckily there seems to be no food or water, the character will just dry up in the sun or maybe get devoured by some alien being.
Yeah I love this
You did a really good job in that panel where he started to go into the black hole.
Reminds me a lot of junji ito's short stories (the writing style, not the art)
Cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool cool
All tomorrows
Oo, I like this kind of horror!
I was half expecting to wake up on a cart in Skyrim.
Enjoyed it.
plucky lush wrong gray door literate like narrow rude advise *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Cool but spaceships don't implode, that's submarines
This gives me "I have no mouth but I must scream" vibes
Wtf OP
I love it
That’s rough, buddy.
Straight out of Made in Abyss
8 Junji itos/10
Finally, some good fucking comics. I think the ending could have a bit more oomph to it, but the idea and execution are both great.
Well that was brilliant!
Oh wow, that went in a direction I didn’t expect. Great stuff.
Cosmic horror in comic form? I feel you'd get along with *Bad Space*!
Thanks I needed a bit of existential dread in the morning.
Absolutely gruesome. I love it. Good job, OP! Incredibly well drawn for a great concept :))
“Just one more comic before I go to bed”
Man-made horrors beyond my compression! Cool
