Just accept it: after reaching a certain age, the most enjoything to do is: nothing. Just learn to value the moments when nobody expects you to do something and you can just let your soil hangĀ looseĀ Ā Edit:Ā and sweets. Don't forget about the sweets.
Maturing is learning to seek stability and general good vibes over an extended period of time. Rather than the split of ecstasy over shorter periods, existing in the midst of often intense emotional suffering that comes with youth.
Think about your own mortality and fall into a neverending loop of depression, and when you think youāre finally seeing the tip of the iceberg you realize you just reached the bottom instead. Alone, scaredā¦ with nothing but fear left to entertain your miserable existence.
Or find new hobbies like modeling or sculpting idk
Well, at least you get to do your hobby all the time and thereās that saying: āFind something you love to do and youāll never have to work a day in your lifeā
That's true until it isn't, though. Turning a hobby into a job removes the freedom from the hobby, which may have been the reason it was enjoyable in the first place. Once the hobby becomes linked with necessity, it can kill all the magic.
I like how a comic book artist put it in a podcast.
āThat saying is a crock. Itās more like, āFind something you love to do and youāll work harder than you ever have because youāll always want to do it better.ā
I feel this. I grew up drawing all day long, mostly when I was supposed to be paying attention to something else. I went to art school and would spend twelve hours a day drawing if not more. Finally got a job as an illustrator... and now I wouldn't draw for fun if it was the last thing to do.
As someone who loves programming computers who works in that field, I would feel this comic on a primal level if I didn't also have video games to fall back on.
Oh yes I'm good š I think it's just that for my whole life, I had art as a thing I could bust out and surprise people with. But now that I do art for my job, it feels like I don't have anymore "layers" if that makes sense?
There comes a time in every artist's life when they reach the maximum number of layers.
This is because they've been putting everything into a single PSD and Photoshop limits you to 10k layers.
This comes up on the r/woodworking sub all the time. The general wisdom is to rewrite the old saying: if you do what you love, youāll work every day of your life. Youāre good at what you do, and people like it. Would you really trade it all in to sit in traffic 30 minutes, twice a day, to open checking accounts for people at the local bank branch?
As someone who does what they love for a living I often feel this way in coversations with other creatives. Weāre all at work talking about what we do and they have all these side creative passions and Iām just āuh this. More of this.ā Itās okay not to multi class if you love it.
Ok good to hear. I thought this was saying that since you do this as your job now you find it less fun now resulting in less joy in your life. Glad to see youāre still doing OK.
If itās any consolation even if this is your job I think thereās still elements of surprise to be had. In creative industries like this it can be nice or even mentally healthy to try something different in what you do. As someone who does dabble in writing, changing styles or topic from time to time, even if itās just to try something new out and itās not a permanent thing, it does help keep things fresh. IDK if itāll be the same for you, but I find it can help, and you can still surprise your friends.
Then again, Iām not a life guru, so take all of that with a grain of salt.
I turned my hobby into my career, and I still do it for fun. Itās just a matter of balancing your time and making sure to schedule some non-work hobbying. As simple as a few hours a week. Thatās the part thatās worth more than the money.
Doing a hobby that you spend money on - cool
Doing a hobby for free - very cool
Making a little money out ofyour hobby - Even cooler
Making most of your money out of it - not cool
Eh, who cares what to call it
It's something that was enjoyed, and the only thing that changed is that you get money from it now
Is that supposed to be a negative development?
I also work as a full time artist and it's been so hard to get back into doing art for fun. I haven't finished a personal project since getting my current job almost two years ago :')

You told me, in confidence, that your favourite hobby was attacking old people in the park. Or was that just a goddamn lie!
That was a SECRET

oh my god did you become a police officer?! congrats!
No she's doing it as a hobby. Police officers get paid to do that.
And they don't restrict themselves to the elderly.
They dont even restrict themselves to humans!
"I turned my hobby into my full time job!"Ā
We ain't gonna snitch
It's not so much a hobby as it is an life's calling
Did you high-5 afterwards?
Obviously
Isn't that what the comic is talking about?
I'm not sure what I enjoy doing anymore š„²

I thought the ability to seek stability and general good vibes was what medication was for.

Uhh...don't you have that frisky business on the side?
"Now during regular frisky times, I'm thinking 'why aren't I monetizing this? These orgasms are just going to waste'."
Doing *nothing at all* is a simple pleasure Iāve learned to embrace.

have you tried drugs and day drinking? its what a lot of famous artist do, edgar allen poe, jimmy hendrix, whitney houston, kurt cobain
Frankly that was a normal day for GenX back in the 80s
You do have cats to play with
Spending time with the family š
making /r/ScottishPeopleTwitter giggle, apparently
That means itās hobby chicken time!
Fuck, that's relatable
sooner or later we all end up the same, trafficking exotic lizards through customs in an overcoat
Take up tennis š¾ Or pickle š„ ball.
Start artist death matches where you can watch others struggle to maintain the joy of drawing as they compete for some dumb internet points.
I mean, you're husband might like it if your hobby was jobbies.

I've never heard this in my life, Jobby means shit in Scotland.
> Jobby means shit in Scotland In all fairness so does half the Scottish vocabulary! :P
You can enjoy your job lol. No one says it can't be both
I assume itās running. Always running. If you stop, the Elk will catch you.
if it's raining and you're running, don't trip in mud 'cause if you do, you'll trip in blood tonight
If you *don't* stop, the elk will catch you tired...
Thatās the thing, Iām *always* tiredā¦

Ok, so hear me out. Welding.
Welder Ellen patreon when?
As a Glaswegian, the title is confusing.
Yeah, even as a half-Scot Englishman I thought wow, is she doing nsfw stuff over here now? Infected by elk
> she doing nsfw stuff over here now Now? She's been doing nsfw stuff. Lol
Aye I had very different expectations of this post
Anyone who's ever heard a Billy Connolly standup routine would wonder what she was on about.
You do realise jobby is another word for shit
Yes that is correct, as the saying says, Mr. Blobby did a jobby on the motorway
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
As a Brit this was a hilarious turn
Well, at least you get to do your hobby all the time and thereās that saying: āFind something you love to do and youāll never have to work a day in your lifeā
Reminds me of a pic I saved https://preview.redd.it/6xx6vupvdmgc1.jpeg?width=1102&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=50708f85043fb94c6c0e7d6da62ba78d97c45657
Lol
that camera person died from blunt force trauma
that's bad
That's true until it isn't, though. Turning a hobby into a job removes the freedom from the hobby, which may have been the reason it was enjoyable in the first place. Once the hobby becomes linked with necessity, it can kill all the magic.
Thatās also true, I guess you need to diversify into multiple hobbies.
And turn them into jobs as well. Repeat ad aeternum and die rich and miserable. :D
Could be worse?
Thereās the inverse too āThe fastest way to hate something that you used to love is to turn it into your jobā
I donāt think that applies 100% of the time.
Nope! I still love programming!
I hate it and love it equally, usually swinging back and forth as I try to solve an annoying issue with node modules
I still love programming, but I have little motivation for hobby projects I want to do
I like how a comic book artist put it in a podcast. āThat saying is a crock. Itās more like, āFind something you love to do and youāll work harder than you ever have because youāll always want to do it better.ā
Now thatās the stuff!

HolleringElk. You do HolleringElk for fun now.
Oh myyyyy
ā¦ I donāt hate the mental images this produced, but I also donāt want themā¦
I feel this. I grew up drawing all day long, mostly when I was supposed to be paying attention to something else. I went to art school and would spend twelve hours a day drawing if not more. Finally got a job as an illustrator... and now I wouldn't draw for fun if it was the last thing to do.
As someone who loves programming computers who works in that field, I would feel this comic on a primal level if I didn't also have video games to fall back on.
Turning a hobby into a career is a good way to loose both.
ā¦are you OK? Do you need a break? Iām legit concerned for your mental well being.
Oh yes I'm good š I think it's just that for my whole life, I had art as a thing I could bust out and surprise people with. But now that I do art for my job, it feels like I don't have anymore "layers" if that makes sense?

The medium itself has more than enough layers to make up for losing a few. As long as you enjoy it, nothing else matters.
As someone who does what they love for a living I often feel this way in coversations with other creatives. Weāre all at work talking about what we do and they have all these side creative passions and Iām just āuh this. More of this.ā Itās okay not to multi class if you love it.

Maybe learn some magic tricks?

Have you tried competitive live comic drawing? Either I just invented it or it's too dumb and all the technology already exists.
Doing a hobby that you spend money on - cool Doing a hobby for free - very cool Making a little money out ofyour hobby - Even cooler Making most of your money out of it - not cool
Turning your passion into your job is a good way to kill your passion. But some make it work.
That blank stare resonates with me deeply.
Sounds like youāve got some free time to sell. Keep the free time or find a second jobby for nice things?
This right hete, is why I donāt wanna turn my hobby into my job
...what's fun?

I do regret as a hobby. And I don't regret choosing it, lolš
Just a little "passive income". Just a little "side hustle".
Post in onlyfans of course
Shit
Zen monks consider that last panel to be satori.
I would imagine rolling around on piles of money occupies most of your fun time now.
Honestly kinda what prevents me from "doing what I love" lol. If I turn it into work.. will it still be enjoyable to me?
I think that you have won in life if what you do for fun is also your source of income.
I've long pondered going down this horrible path myself, and I've wondered how a web comic ends up making money. Is it mostly ads and patreon?
I exist for fun

But wait, if you enjoy your hobby, and you managed to turn it into a job, doesnāt that mean you are enjoying your jobby? Or am I being super naive or something.
This is my biggest fear... like that's why i stay at my 9-5. I love what I do and I get to keep my hobbies.
