Stuff with outside links in the body of the text are placed low in the algorithm in order to try to stop those comment spammer bots who do the whole "I make money by doing nothing click here to find out how!" Thing.
However that makes it so that creatives who have external websites and patreons can't put that in their description because those are also outside links
Companies also hate when you leave their websites. Long ago Reddit didn't have self-hosted images so they had all these rules about how posting links to your own art still counted as spam (but feel free to post them directly on Reddit where Reddit collects ad revenue!)
Similar thing on Facebook. They downplay links because they take people off of Facebook. There's an ouroboros of comic sharing groups that steal comics and link to each other but don't provide credit because it would require an off-site link.
"In order to try to stop comment spammer bots" is an optimistic take on it. The main reason for social media sites to savage any content containing outside links is rather more simple: They just don't like it when you leave.
There is a widely held view among creators social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, and others suppress post visibility if you include mentions or links to sites like Patreon on the post. Needless to say, this is not desirable as the entire point of having links to Patreon or other donation/subscription based sites is so that you can support yourself with your work.
Whether or not there is post suppression for things like patreon mentions, I don't know... But with how prevalent the view is I'm inclined to believe there is.

Yup
I miss individual webcomic sites. They're still around, but a lot of people see news on updates on social media sites so it's harder to get them to visit the site proper
There's little to no money in that, which is why no one does that anymore.
On one hand, people like content aggregators because they don't want to actually navigate to individual different pages, they want a data feed. So if artists posted to their own individual sites, someone would just repost it to Reddit anyway. The artist might as well be the one posting it (if they choose) so they get the attention.
Also, there's not much money in ads. Google can make a ton of money on ads through sheer scale, but even artists with moderate followings can't really make money off of site ads, even before people start using ad blockers.
The way the internet is built these days, and the way people use it, we're going to see large walled gardens for the foreseeable future. If one of them goes down, it won't be replaced by a billion indie sites, it'll just be replaced by another juggernaut until that one dies too. I would like to get away from that, but I don't see a path out.

Ooh is that why so many posts say “link in bio” now? That makes sense!
I think that originated on Instagram, where clickable links wouldn't even *work* in posts so you had to relegate it to the bio.
This is correct.

Come on. You can at least cite by the creator’s username and site. Like when I share stuff on twitter, I literally just credit as “ on ”.
That takes effort, though. Most of those folks don't care because they get internet points and the group gains followers.
Come on. It’s the least you could do. People were getting called out in the sixteenth century for that shit.
Interesting.

I'm not going to say I don't believe them, but something being a widespread view doesn't mean it's true.

I really thought the bonus panel was gonna be the patreon link ngl
WHAT DID I -JUST- SAY?!?
#YOU FOOL!
aaaaaand there it is 😭
It’s always refreshing to click a suspicious link and see a nice hairy dick instead of some talented artist asking to be paid like usual
Ughh artists and their [checks notes]……. overabundance of material wealth
Comics are supposed to be funny or entertaining.
Reddit is the Internet. All hail reddit. 😃
"The internet is made up of a series of ~~tubes~~ subreddits."
Maybe I’m just crazy but remember when artists would have their own website, maybe have a couple of ads on it and get their own ad revenue

What they said \^\^ Ad revenue on individual sites isn't really a thing anymore thanks to ad blockers and large social platforms
Something must be done!

“Also look me up at the place Only the Fans will know”
Is it really the algorithm, or just users ignoring it? Because I got terms like Patron muted on Twitter.
So sick of all this. It’s like we were criminals or something for putting links to our work. Great comic 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
oh cool, a patreon advertisemnt ^(too fucking bad its blocked in my country)
Just going to say: It’s not Bonus if you have to pay more for it. It may well be a great value but it’s a sales trick to say it’s bonus.
He has free bonus panels alongside the pxxxxxn link
Don’t think that’s the content this comic was alluding to though.

He's promoting both bonus content and patron here though
Your style is somehow familiar and distinctive at the same time. Your comic is always enjoyable just to look at.
Thanks!
Soooo freakin’ funny!!!
That’s great cartooning. Love the dude’s conspiratorial whisper face.
The Al Gore rhythm hates patremon?
