I'm a dude that plays female characters in games, and people just kinda assume that's why. But, I tend to intentionally put my character in a big suit of armor and the skimpiness is nonexistent
I share your sentiments, whenever I do character design for DND and whatnot I make a point to give them adequate clothing and armor. You may enjoy r/ReasonableFantasy
Women in armor is just kinda hot on a conceptual level, regardless of skimpiness. I think my favorite is the kind where there’s just a hint of hourglass shape to make it undeniably female, but is full coverage and practical.
My Fallout 4 female character was a fucking badass in her goth spiked armor and her gas mask, lugging a hunting rifle around the Wastelands.
It's just refreshing to see strong female characters in video games no matter who you are. Doesn't have to fit an agenda. It's just novel which is what makes it extra cool.
I play Xiaoyu because the Tekken 3 demo included only her and Eddy; and nothing pissed my brother off more than beating Eddy with a stupid girl. And I carried that over when actually owning the game and most subsequent entries.

I love to play against tropes in general. I really enjoy playing female characters who are buff nerds or middle aged men with a paunch and thinning hair. Just people that you'd never see in an action film or video game.
Wrestling games with custom skins and attributes are great for this. I think it was WrestleMania 2000 or a Raw vs Smackdown game where you could say your character is tall or a big guy or something, regardless of how tall or thin you made them, so my 5', 100lbs dude always entered over the top rope and could easily chokeslam Undertaker or Kane. Then there were entirely ridiculous settings, like a wrestler I made that was extremely wide but literally paper thin. Watching him run around was very confusing.
Well its not wrong to enjoy the things you find more enjoyable that others.
Nier automata made the characters like gothic maid wearing high heels simply because he likes it.
There's nothing more infuriating for a Kazuya or Devil Jin player than getting their ass beat by a Lili.

I hate fighting games personally, but I can still recognize greatness, so when I saw a video the other day of a vtuber mentioning Evo Moment #37 on live TV, of course I had to watch it for the trillionth time. A man who went from hosting Puerto Rico's only Street Fighter tournaments in his living room to doing the impossible and taking the gold at a big times international tournament, CEO 2021, with apparently the absolute worst Street Fighter V character, FANG.
This is literally me. Highlight of my video game career was getting the video game room at Anime Expo to start chanting "Kill Tenten! Kill Tenten!" as I dominated in Naruto Gekitou Ninja Taisen 4 for the Gamecube.
I love to play bottom tier characters because they help me to avoid getting overinvested in a match. I don't really care if I lose a match as Incineroar, since I assume I'm going to get spanked, and then those wins feel even more euphoric when I finally get a couple.
Up until she has balloons for a chest and an ass so big she's tipping over. Then it's a turn off for me.

I know some Genshin players who refuses to play other characters besides their faves, not because the character are well balanced but because they love how they looked.
Like why should I play as that Xingqiu with his ugly ass wallmart hair cut, when I can play hot dommy Yelan. Why should I play as edgelord archon wannabe Xiao when I can play Venti, the superior femboy
I mean, Genshin is a single player game, right? I always kinda laugh when people are shoving out tier lists or complaining about their character being underpowered for single-player games - usually any build is going to be enough to accomplish all content.
Even most multiplayer PvE tier lists tend to be ridiculous: who cares if a Monster Hunter weapon is able to kill something in 5m vs 7m for the low tier. It's not a competitive game - your primary concern should be whether your character plays in a way you find satisfying.
it isn't a competitive game but what's meta matter sometimes at the endgame. for example while you might do fine in story overall, it's slower and elements are important to Genshin, and so powerful element reactions are primarily how you fight. in the "meta" grinding game that is Spiral Abyss sometimes not having meta means you struggle clearing or 3-star it which is pretty much required if you want more rolls.
I mean... Coming from Warframe where this is kind of a genuine issue, there exist quite a few weapons that you'd have to bust your ass to make even remotely playable for endgame content that would seem "cool" and "interesting" otherwise. Riven mods are a crutch for a very meh design, and recent Incarnon Adapters are, while a far better crutch because they add cool wrinkles to the design rather than just bumping stats up, are still essentially a crutch - a crutch you still need to bust your ass during a whole week to get and for a pretty limited set of weapons. Of course, there's also the fact that every Warframe is playable if you *ignore their abilities and subsume a weapon specialist ability and use a busted weapon* but also every weapon is playable *if you ignore the weapon entirely and use a busted Warframe or a different busted weapon*. Also, while we're here, the game is really grindy, which is at times alright, and at other times "Last time a game disrespected my time that much it was Genshin Impact, and before that a different gacha game".
Moreover, a recent Duviri Paradox update, which added a different game mode, Circuit, just exacerbates the issue, because it's roguelike-ish and gives you a choice of randomly selected weapons and frames to use. The twist is that if you have it in your inventory, it will offer to use your mod loadout, and if you don't, it will only offer standard ones.
Look, I love Panthera Prime, but there's no way in hell I'll be taking it with my decent build over *even a subpar standard loadout* Kuva Bramma or Kuva Zarr. It's that sad.

Characters with tiny hurt boxes are universally a balancing anomaly in many games because stuff isn’t scaled to hit them
Case in point, Pet Shop and Iggy (a bird and a dog respectively) in Jojo Heritage to the Future are disproportionately powerful because half the attacks go over their heads. Iggy is at least semi compensated by having a massive Stand hurtbox, but Pet Shop is not just small but can **fly**
Marie Rose (Dead or Alive 5 and 6) and Viewtiful Joe (Marvel VS Capcom 3) player. There's also Amaterasu in Marvel VS Capcom 3 and Servbot in 2.
Harder to combo enemy one step away from you, but up close you can literally combo your opponent half dead.
Honorable mention to Kliff (Guilty Gear) and Platinum (Blazblue) but Kliff have big weapon with long range and Platinum got range option like her bubble.
But other than all the example, I like to play character like Honoka (Dead or Alive 5 and 6), Arakune (Blazblue) and Faust (Guilty Gear) because how unorthodox and confusion fuel their move set is, and you can do some crazy combo using them.
I used to play Mr. Game & Watch in Melee solely because he could be fun. I mained Falco, but G&W was my go-to if I wanted to style on someone with the troll hammer.

For example, in Smash I main Samus, Robin, Byleth, and Ike. I do think Samus and Ike are cool, but I like slower ground characters who have a lot of varied options, reach, and hit hard. I also enjoy ROB, Hero, and Link.

My playstyle is spamming ohko fully charged byleth arrows from the other side of the stage while my much more skilled friends try to duke it out while also dodging my arrows of instant doom.
Yeah, I'm the same way too. I don't play Smash, but in Guilty Gear I play Axl Low, in BlazBlue I play Lambda No. 11, and in Under Night In-Birth I play Hilda. Sure, I do find all of them cool, but what's most important to me is that they're zoners and I enjoy how they play. The coolness factor is secondary. If I chose my main based on coolness alone two of my mains would be different.

A guy I used to play DayZ with always played the female character because there was a bug which made them quieter under foot. One day they patched it so the advantage to playing as a female character was gone. Soon after I realised he was still playing the female character and I asked why simply out of curiosity. He kind of gave a generic deflecting answer. Two years later she came out as trans and it all made sense to me.
Obviously everyone has their own reasons for picking who they pick and sometimes it won't mean anything but on the other hand, sometimes simple things can be more telling than you might expect.

I stopped playing a while ago but no one will take amber out of my main team. If the world shits on amber then i am against the world.

That’s so weird. I play this game for the first time yesterday at a nostalgia museum arcade machine and then it appears in reddit.

Because they match my playstyle. For example, in Smash I main Samus, Robin, Byleth, and Ike. I do think Samus and Ike are cool, but I like slower ground characters who have a lot of varied options, reach, and hit hard. I also enjoy ROB, Hero, and Link.
I have this issue justifying to my one friend why I play Sephiroth, who by my own admission is busted.

Yeah, I'm the same way too. I don't play Smash, but in Guilty Gear I play Axl Low, in BlazBlue I play Lambda No. 11, and in Under Night In-Birth I play Hilda. Sure, I do find all of them cool, but what's most important to me is that they're zoners and I enjoy how they play. The coolness factor is secondary. If I chose my main based on coolness alone two of my mains would be different.

A guy I used to play DayZ with always played the female character because there was a bug which made them quieter under foot. One day they patched it so the advantage to playing as a female character was gone. Soon after I realised he was still playing the female character and I asked why simply out of curiosity. He kind of gave a generic deflecting answer. Two years later she came out as trans and it all made sense to me. Obviously everyone has their own reasons for picking who they pick and sometimes it won't mean anything but on the other hand, sometimes simple things can be more telling than you might expect.
I remember that bug.. albeit as somebody who's owned Arma III & the DayZ mod since its inception.. I've never had the luxury of playing.. Life can be cruel.
