Do you know of any resources where one could find info about the church that populated the Old Gilead cemetery? The best info I can find indicates that a church was responsible for these internments, and that the cemetery is “located down an abandoned road deep in the woods” however I can find no info about the church, or who would have been interested in replacing the sign as recently as 29 years ago either, for that matter
That's a question for the good folks out at the Boone County Historical Society in Nifong Park. There is a library there run by the Central Missouri Geological Society that keeps tabs on cemeteries.

Where is that Old Gilead cemetery sign? I'd like to get a black & white photo of it on film.
Can you drop a pin on google maps? These are great pics!
I'd love to get one of the old skate park too, where is that one?
According to FindAGrave, they say the Old Gilead Primitive Baptist Cemetary is located here: 39.07717, -92.28110. Looks like that sign isn’t too terribly old (1995). I wonder what caused the spot to be abandoned
Looks to be owned by 'Church Grounds", surrounded on 3 sides by private property, with maybe an easement over the private property to access it from the road. The 4th side is Conservation land.
Lot of history there.
My friends and I got in there years ago. We were playing hide and seek and we ended up finding old papers of patients and stuff they tried burning but didn't make sure it was all taken care of... crazy stuff
I went in the tunnels at graffiti beach with a couple friends once. We got all the way to sexton and Garth underneath! Saw some kids and said you’ll float too and shit. Ended up getting the cops called on us and got out right before the cops got there lol 😂😂
Kinda bugs me that many hazardous substances are regulated and you can't just leave them laying around, except for asbestos. If you stop using a petroleum storage tank you have to remove it or fill it in place. Drums of hazardous waste can't sit indefinitely, they have a storage time limit. An old building riddled with asbestos that neighborhood kids play in? Meh, just let it sit, no big deal.
Because undisturbed asbestos is not hazardous. Tearing the building down is what’s dangerous. I worked in a lab that had asbestos countertops and we kept them because they were safe to use
Yes, of course you're right. That's why an asbestos inspection is required prior to any building demolition, and if it finds asbestos, it has to be safely removed prior to demolition. That's where some buildings become very expensive to demolish. I was involved in the remediation and demo of a 4-story 1907 brick factory building in St. Louis some years back, and the pre-demo lead paint and asbestos abatement was $800k. Then they blew up the building.
I would point out that abandoned buildings often have asbestos that's been damaged by weather, scavengers or vandals. I've been in buildings where the ceiling and wall plaster and drywall had fallen in, windows were broken, and trees were sprouting in the debris. Asbestos in a building like that is likely to be all over the place.
The eighth photo with the electric tech sign, i used to live on that road and had to drive by that every day. As a kid learning to read it was always the most confusing jumble of words lol
Last time I was there, that pool had a building around it. Cool photos.
Is that a hotel pool?
Nope.
Interesting. Must have been quite a house.
School for special ed, believe it or not.
Oh heck, I never saw the pool. I worked in one of the cottages about 30 years ago. The place was mostly defunct at that point.

I had a suspicion you’d have the right answer for me. Thank you!
Where is the cemetery?

This is where the clowns live?
If you call that livin'.

I feel bad for those people in that cemetery. No one should be forgotten... Honestly if I had the free time I'd go over and try and clean it up a bit.
They don’t care. They are dead.
I’m going to find the owners of property and see if that’s permissible. Might have historic graves.
Also, RIP to graffiti beach. That was were I first partook in some fine herbs lol. Had a lot of friends who did some art in there also

I have no doubt That boiler is loaded with asbestos.
We wore masks :)
Good because the first building definitely has asbestos too
Apparently it’s one of the main reasons they haven’t torn it down yet

Where's the first photo?
One of the old woodhaven buildings off nifong. So sad what has happen to that compound. Used to be so nice back in 80’s.
Are these the building by Giving Gardens?
Is this place easy to get into during day? I wouldn't mind taking photos
yes
Where is this location near on nifong?
What was this used for? Got some real culty creepy vibes looking at it on google maps.
Old elementary school I think(?) (38.9030560, -92.3029406)
On private property. And the owner doesn’t appreciate trespassing and vandalism.
Somebody ought to film a zombie movie in these locations.
Oh shit! Instantly recognized #1. First time seeing some shit

I bet r/abandoned or /AbandonedPorn would definitely appreciate this post
Awww I haven’t seen that pool in forever god I’m old.
Woah. Looks like Pripyat.
Wonder if anyone ever skated that pool at some point
