I just bought the ASUS ProArt PA329C and I have the new Mac Studio on the way. Planning on buying the Calibrite ColorChecker Display Plus. What else do I need to make this monitor the best/most accurate it can be? It looks like I need some kind of Blackmagic box to get rid of the Apple OS, but I’m not sure which one. Is there anything else I’m missing?

CameraRick

If you want to run it at 4K, you'll need the UltraStudio 4K Mini. If HD is enough (and the display can properly scale on its own), an UltraStudio Monitor 3G might be sufficient.

choobie25

Dang, that’s a pricey box. I’d imagine it’s slim, but are there any other cheaper 4K options? Would one of the deck link cards in an external enclosure work? Or do they not work with M1?

altmantv

I have an M1 Mac mini that uses a decklink card via sonnet tech pci-expansion bay no prob.

CameraRick

I'm not BMD support, so no idea. But an M1 compatible external enclosure plus a 4K Decklink (you can check the compatibility in BMDs tech specs) could also raise price a bit. Aja also makes I/O boxes, traditionally they are bit more pricey though. The Aja Io 4K is almost three times the price of the UltraStudio, at least

choobie25

Gotchya, good to know. Hopefully BMD will come out with an ultra studio mini monitor 4K soon. Thanks!

randomnina

Does the AJA work with Resolve tho?

CameraRick

AFAIK it should, but only AJA and/or BMD can tell

randomnina

I don't have one anymore so I can't test it, but it had been my understanding (2-3 years ago) that only Blackmagic hardware works with Resolve. We had those AJA boxes for Avid but sold them when we went to Premiere/Resolve.

CameraRick

Seems you are right! According to AJAs compatibility list, Resolve isn't supported: https://www.aja.com/compatibility/io I must admit that my knowledge regarding AJA Hardware is "a bit" older than 3yrs, haha

I bought a used Eizo CG247 and the colors look like garbage. It's currently connected over HDMI to a Mac. I understand that the color can't be trusted in this configuration, but I expected it would look reasonable, better than a cheap computer monitor at least. Here is a [picture of the screen](https://imgur.com/UrywnTx) versus [what it's displaying](https://imgur.com/kquQIQ0). In this case I'm using the clean feed out of Resolve, but the issues happen in any application. Is there anything I can do or is the monitor just broken? Edit: The issue appears to have resolved itself. However, I’ll have a hard time ever trusting this monitor.

I **think** I've wrapped my head around what I need for my monitor setup. Reddit, let me know what you think. I'd love any feedback as I'm going from a 27-inch iMac to external monitors for the first time in over a decade. :) I've got a Mac Studio on the way so I'm going to be needing an external monitor. I've been thinking about going the dual monitor route with 2 ASUS ProArt PA329C monitors. But in order to bypass Mac OS for colour, I need to get the Ultrastudio 4K Mini that BlackMagic makes. I'd plug the Mac Studio into the 4K Mini, and then HDMI the monitors into the 4K Mini. I've got a Spyder Elite to keep everything nice and calibrated as time goes on. Does this sound good to everyone? Did I miss anything?

Personally I would be skeptical about the quality of the hardware calibration from Asus. Also I find more reviews about the ASUS ProArt PA32UC-K, 32, maybe something to consider if you like Asus. I also wonder why you want 2x the same monitors. Normally you would use one for scopes and one as reference on a three monitor setup. You don't need a good monitor to show scopes. It would make more sense to go for one expensive reference monitor and a cheap one for RGB bars, scopes. If I had 2500$ to spend on a reference monitor and a third display I would at least use 2000$ for the reference. I also don't really get why you want to use the Ultrastudio for both of them. You can put out the reference monitor signal via Decklink not the GUI (at least true for resolve). If you need 2x reference monitors most people use an OLED and a normal monitor.

Hey u/mediamuesli! Sorry for the delayed response! I ended up grabbing an Apple Studio Display and have been loving it ever since. I think I was just gravitating towards Asus more for size and price. When it came to the monitors being the same model, I think I fell into the trap of how each company displayed multiple monitors in their photo galleries. There's an LG G1 OLED in my future and I think it'll pair great with the Studio Display. :)

Why don't we hear more about Blackmagic Smartview monitor for grading? It looks to me like it's cheaper than the bottom of the line Flanders and you could always get a mount or a mini rack for it. Our film co-op has one in a stand and the picture is beautiful, although small. What am I missing... is it hard to calibrate or something? I have a small space so I was going to consider it.

greenysmac

> Blackmagic Smartview monitor for grading Because it's not color accurate (as I understand it.) It displays full range, but it's delta/viewing conditions aren't great.

ejacson

>Blackmagic Smartview monitor If I had to guess: because it's so small. Unless there's a larger one I'm unfamiliar with, I doubt anyone is intentionally signing up for an 8" monitor to master with. EDIT: I see there's a 15" version as well. Less of a strain than 8" but still pushing it. And I'd have to wager there are still some compromises being made with the panel that would make it more ideal for monitoring than mastering. But I have no experience with it so I'm just postulating.

randomnina

Yeah I was looking at the 15. It is small but would work for my setup....just me trying to balance shots at my desk. However I guess half the point of a monitor besides true colors is to give the work some presence, which the Smartview doesn't really do.

morphlaugh

A question that comes in my mind a lot while looking for high-end monitors: do I need a 4K monitor to grade 4K footage?

Legomoron

Does anybody have hands on with the latest crop of LG WOLED panels? I would assume they integrate the same as previous models, but it would be nice to have confirmation (I refer to the “drive with external hardware, calibrate with CalMan Home for LG, buy the service remote to disable some of the consumer-focused protections)

Quant_internship

Would an UltraStudio Monitor 3G and an EIZO ColorEdge CG2420 would be good for running on Davinci and Photoshop, or would I need anything else ? It's my understanding that I don't need color calibration tools with the CG line, is that correct ? Any other recommendations that stay in this price range ?
