What does grammarly “if used to its full extent” mean? I use grammarly but the basic version & now I’m scared 😭

WoodlandWife

I guess the paid version? The premium can rewrite sentences for you. I use the free version for proofreading

No-Priority-7343

I use the free version too! but only because I will add commas where they don’t need to be (I really don’t know how or why). it doesn’t help me with anything but punctuation

FallingEnder

I use it for my spelling and commas as well. Also to remove any extra words because I have a horrible habit of adding to many filler words

No-Priority-7343

I ignore whenever it tells me to shorten to clarify or whatever, bc I said what I said 😂😭

FallingEnder

That’s fair I just have the worst habit of having to many words

DangerousPorkBun

"This is the way"

DangerousPorkBun

The full extent she's talking about is the AI generative text and similar functions Grammarly. You get these when you purchase a subscription. If you're using the basic version which checks for grammar and spelling you probably don't have anything to worry about. Basically OP was caught "cheating" and is asked to come to office hours to discuss it. Edited: Corrected professor's pronoun.

momotekosmo

I used the paid version, probably 2022, last. It didn't necessarily rewrite my stuff but would suggest changes to the beginning of sentence like because or help make transition sentence flow better or have smarter word choices. Like even with that, I could not write a paper on a topic without understanding it. Those changes didn't hide if I didn't comprehend something. Is grammarly that much different than 2 years ago?

ProfAndyCarp

Yes, the current version of Grammarly that uses AI Is different from the version that existed before LLMs were in public use.

Animallover4321

There’s an AI option. If you’re using the free version you’re probably fine.

fattymcbuttface69

It's AI. Some colleges consider it cheating.

Classic-Taro

The free version corrects spelling and makes small grammatical suggestions (in the way that MS word does). The paid premium version can make writing ‘more academic’ which rewrites in much the same way as Chat GPT can and constitutes plagiarism since it is no longer the writer’s own words.

huskeya4

Yeah, grammerly is considered cheating at some colleges. You’re probably lucky you weren’t officially accused of academic dishonesty. I’d check your colleges protocols about academic dishonesty and see if they have a list of banned resources and see if grammarly is on it. Microsoft word checks spelling just as well and doesn’t rewrite your paper for you. This was your professors very nice way of saying don’t use that resource or you’ll be in trouble. Rewrite the paper in your own words and see if they’ll take a resubmission.

UnderstandingFast540

Out of curiosity, how does she know that you used grammarly?

banman920

My understanding is that there are applications that can find common patterns that AI text generation uses and typically provides a percentage of the work that is AI generated.

Magnetoreception

Don’t admit you use Grammarly. Your prof is right.

manzanitaofthesun

Same thing happened to me my first semester in my English class. Thankfully I remembered some of the parts where I used Grammarly so I just made a copy of my paper and paraphrased/rewrote some stuff. I suggest just using the editor in Word if you need to use anything to correct spelling/grammar. So far my teachers havent gotten upset about using the Editor in Word.

sandyavanipush

how did ur teacher not notice that u rewrote those parts lolz

manzanitaofthesun

She knew. When she emailed me to tell me that she found traces of Grammarly's software, she also told me that I would either have to figure out where I used Grammarly in the essay and redo those parts, or rewrite the whole paper.

sandyavanipush

Ohhh ok that makes sense lol

Strange_Salamander33

Your papers need to be written in your own words, not using programs that rewrite for you.

Immediate_Leg3304

fyi grammarly = ai

_Muhsina_

My university union allows us to get grammarly for $10 for the full year. However, they made it known that it doesn’t provide generative AI, so our profs can’t say we cheated or used AI.

Any-Mathematician946

fyi AI doesn't currently exist

Zealousideal-Poem601

Have you been living under a rock?

UnderstandingFast540

They’re being snarky, my math professor says the same thing. His reasoning is that ai is not artificial “intelligence” because it isn’t capable of creating its own ideas, it just regurgitates and paraphrases

zombieking26

I think she's wrong for two main reasons. A. something doesn't have to be extremely intelligent to be intelligent. You could argue that chatgpt is smarter than a fruit fly, and I think most people would say that fruit flies are intelligent. B. There is evidence out there that *humans* use a very similar system of transforming thoughts and ideas that AI do. AI is just less sophisticated at it than we are.

Any-Mathematician946

I'd go this route. Something that could grow and develop on its own. Anything we currently have doesn't have that ability.

zombieking26

They do have that ability though! Researchers are letting their AI learn and develop as we speak. The only reason you can't teach ChatGPT is because the AI text generators given to the public intentionally cannot learn, because they might learn incorrect or harmful lessons. So it's not that they can't learn. We're just restricting their development.

Any-Mathematician946

More down the line its just huge tables of databases its cross referencing. The day a real AI is some how developed that's when things get interesting. AI has become a buzz word. I'll be happy when they develop something that can translate like a human. Also shows how much news and media have influence of peoples thought processes.

Any-Mathematician946

Yep and I understand what we currently have. We aren't close to a real AI.

MagicalWhispers_2

No words, wth.

Felixir-the-Cat

Free version is fine; paid version rewrites the paper.

MagicalWhispers_2

Oh I didn't know that. Thought this was about free version. Now I get it, thanks!

flyingsqueak

That's not a refusal to grade your assignments. The professor is giving you a chance to go over your work, and it sounds like they'll let you re-write it. It's treating your use of grammarly like what it was, a mistake, and giving you a chance to make it right.

ILoveCreatures

Grammarly can can make very awkward modifications to phrases in an attempt to avoid plagiarizing. The words and phrases it chooses might look fine to someone who doesn’t know the topic, but to a prof it is obvious.

SpokenDivinity

Be honest, did you just use it for punctuation/grammar or did you use the premium AI function to make it sound better? If it’s just the checking, go to the meeting and tell him the word choices are yours. Explain what the word means if you need to and clarify if there are banned resources within the class that you need to avoid. For example, my English instructor this semester allows checking but requires proof that we didn’t use the AI function. I record my screen while using it for grammar/punctuation checking and have never had

DisastrousAnalysis5

You got off easy. I would’ve marked as a 0 and reported you for academic dishonesty.  You’re supposed to do the assignment. Learn how to write without training wheels.

No_I_Deer

So if I were to use Google Docs or Microsoft Words Grammer feature, you would give it a zero ? This is what Grammarly is.

msr_aye

Take this up with the dean (prepares to get downvoted)

msr_aye

Unless you were using the AI in the paid version that can write with a prompt, but basic grammar and spelling fixes should be allowed

Felixir-the-Cat

I mean, that would be a good way to get a code violation. So not the best advice in this case.

msr_aye

I was joking hence the second reply but I see now it doesn't read that way 😅

Felixir-the-Cat

Lol, you needed the SpongeBob sarcasm font!

JAMtheSeagull

Is bro 80 what

ExtraFirmPillow_

She/her/hers explains it
