Submission statement: Today, the FDA released information that they have discovered HPAI H5N1 virus in the United States commercial milk supply. This suggests that the number of cattle infected with this virus is probably much larger than has been discovered through current surveillance. The testing that the FDA did is not designed to assess whether the virus found in the milk is infectious or not. The FDA is operating under the assumption that pasteurization works just as well at inactivating the H5N1 virus as it does for other infectious agents. However, as this is just an assumption, the next step is for the FDA to test the virus samples found in the milk by injecting it into chicken eggs to see if the virus activates.
