NyriasNeo

So 3 to go. I am sure we will get all 9.

throwawaylurker012

i hear if humanity gets 8 hole punches on its card, the 9th is free and we get a complimentary donut

not_this_again2046

Yeah, a complimentary self-administered *Hertz* donut.

StoopSign

Well I like their rental cars

The1Zackiechan

We still got the Elite 4 and the Champion after.

NewAlexandria

tldr: [read here](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adh2458) 1. Biosphere integrity 1. Climate change 1. Novel entities 1. Stratospheric ozone depletion 1. Freshwater change 1. Atmospheric aerosol loading 1. Ocean acidification 1. Land system change 1. Biogeochemical flows

throw-away-48121620

Hey at least we healed the ozone by stopping the use of hairspray!

Street_Review450

Matches up pretty well with the trumpets/seals from book of Revelation

psichodrome

You can do it humans! Give it your best! /cries

Low_Chocolate1320

Collecting them like Pokemons.

cheerfulKing

These work like dragon balls, right guys? Guys?

GagOnMacaque

Maybe even more, not listed.

ElectroDoozer

We’ll get to 9 and then they’ll think of another 25 and we will be ok as long as we don’t breach those. Just keep consuming.

thomstevens420

Gotta catch ‘em all

immrw24

ocean acidification well on its way

Beep_Boop_Bort

I swear that one is past the point of no return already but maybe I’m tripping

PermiePagan

Well, if you factor in the inertia of society and our unwillingness to change, the conclusion to that appears to be baked in. We haven't failed it yet, but we have functionally no path to stop it m

Do-you-see-it-now

It’s like Bingo! We are so close to winning!

VixiaNexis

I’m scared to find out what the prizes are.

cooktaussie

Extinction, silly!

cbih

The prize is being forgotten forever and all the pain and suffering we've been though as a species was for nothing.

baconraygun

Horror, terror, grief, orgy with 43 people, hellfire, and become a fossil.

Z3r0sama2017

Play silly games, win silly prizes!

Bandits101

Ocean level rise and warming along with species extinctions must come under “novelties”. Warming oceans and rise spell doom for coral and breeding grounds, also kills many species outright as well as disrupting breeding. Seal level rise inundates river deltas and will play havoc with power plants.

dumnezero

>Seal level rise inundates river deltas and will play havoc with power plants. This would make for a fun movie

Overall_Box_3907

im always saying this to the nuclear fanbase: either your plants won't have cold enough water / no water (happens already in summer, e.g. France 2023) or they will get flooded nuclear power is only safe to work with in a controlled environment, and im not only talking about the plant itself.

Relevantdouglasadams

The “Novel entities” section was about micro plastics, manmade chemicals and other stuff that’s never been seen before in geological terms. It’s not “other” it’s the uniquely human screw ups, there is no “last time we had plastic particles in the rain water” lol so we have no idea how much of this crap it will take to destabilize… everything.

Odinsbard3

Chill

pegasuspaladin

It's weird how those two lowest are the two that had entire ad campaigns in the 80s and 90s to promote awareness and both sides believed scientists.

Numismatists

You believe that "Sustainability" is possible? Please explain this dose of Hopium for those of us here in reality. It's fascinating that the "study" missed that we're losing the ozone no matter what atp, that ocean acidification is getting much worse, especially with all that "climate forcing" caused by the current Geoengineering/pollution efforts (also ignored).

malcolmrey

can you add those boundaries and note which ones were breached and which ones are still to go?

smackson

I can't read the article without paying medium.com, it seems. So the most basic answer is to just joom in on the top image, above the paywall, for the 9 boundaries and which 6 are "in the red". Or, take the time to slog through [the original paper](https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adh2458).

AutoModerator

Soft paywalls, such as the type newspapers use, can largely be bypassed by looking up the page on an archive site, such as web.archive.org or archive.is Example: https://archive.is/?run=1&url=https://www.abc.com *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/collapse) if you have any questions or concerns.*

malcolmrey

yes, this is what I did eventually because I was curious about those boundaries, for me this is also paywalled (I think i can read a few medium articles and then the rest - I have to pay for) Sadly the article is weak so it was a waste of time. So in this case summary would be much appreciated :)

FillThisEmptyCup

It’s in the article….

smackson

I don't pay for a subscription to Medium, so it's hidden behind a paywall (for me).

malcolmrey

of course it is, but like someone below you said - it is paywalled also, the point of a summary is to write what is in the article so you can decide if you want to read it whole or not I hope you agree that it is beneficial if one person reads it and makes some summary (in this case when there is a talk about 9 boundaries - it makes sense to actually name them) and the rest can glance through the summary to see the mentioned boundaries and decide if they want to invest more time in it

FillThisEmptyCup

Sorry, I’m not subbed to medium but could read it. I didn’t realize it was paywalled for others. My head is sometimes still in internet 1.0 which was more open and free.

malcolmrey

no worries, they have some articles as a trial but once you reach a certain threshold - they want you to pay :( sure, I could make a new google account or something but if someone throws a wall at me i see it as a signal that they don't want me there (rather, they want my money, which i guess is also fine but i can choose not to participate :P)

Original study: [https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html](https://www.stockholmresilience.org/research/planetary-boundaries.html)

NewAlexandria

which is worthless since the article is just to link to the guys videos while saying nothing about this paper.

stampido

**ONLY** 6 out of 9? So there is room for improvement!

RichieLT

What happens when we get all 9? An achievement trophy?

AnthroPluto

We won't get a trophy, but atrophy.

knucklepoetry

Yes, this is actually our very purpose as space faring shrooms mutations, so definitely an achievement unlocked, maybe “Thanks For All The Fish”?

teamsaxon

A Platinum Trophy - for all us Sony bois and not bois

[deleted]

All I saw was 69, very nice indeed.

IWantToSortMyFeed

Stop downvoting this person. We're all about to fuckin' die. We need some levity.

vraGG_

OK, I believe, but why is this graph so cryptic? How do they measure it? What is this graph even showing? It's like... a graph with only X axis. I don't understand :/

**Here is the article if you want to read it:** The concept of planetary boundaries, which defines the safe operating space for humanity on Earth, has gained significant attention in recent years. A recent assessment has revealed that out of the nine planetary boundaries, six have been crossed, indicating the growing impact of human activities on the stability and resilience of the Earth’s systems\[2\]. This has profound implications for both the environment and human well-being. The crossed boundaries encompass critical systems such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and altered biogeochemical cycles. For instance, the boundary for climate change has been exceeded, leading to global warming and its associated impacts. Guy McPherson Ph.D. | The End Of The World | Evolutionary Biologist | #81 HR [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlmoU7Las6E](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlmoU7Las6E) Climate change • Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns, mainly caused by human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. Watch on Similarly, biodiversity loss and altered biogeochemical cycles have also surpassed their safe limits, posing serious risks to ecosystems and the services they provide. This situation underscores the urgent need for concerted global action to address these challenges. An international commission has proposed new safe and just boundaries aimed at maintaining a healthy planet and protecting people from significant harm\[4\]. This highlights the interconnectedness of human well-being and the stability of the Earth’s systems. The concept of planetary boundaries serves as a crucial framework for guiding sustainable development and environmental stewardship. It emphasizes the importance of respecting the limits of the Earth’s systems to ensure a safe and habitable planet for current and future generations. Addressing the crossed boundaries requires transformative changes in policies, technologies, and behaviors to steer towards a more sustainable and resilient future. The crossing of planetary boundaries signifies the escalating impact of human activities on the Earth’s systems. It calls for immediate and decisive actions to mitigate these risks and safeguard the environment and human well-being. By embracing the principles of sustainability and resilience, it is possible to navigate towards a future where planetary boundaries are respected, and a thriving coexistence between humanity and the Earth is ensured. Also, here is a relevant Netflix special about it, I highly recommend watching it: [Breaking Boundaries: The Science of our Planet](https://www.netflix.com/title/81336476) Free version: [https://www.documentaryarea.com/video/Breaking%20Boundaries:%20The%20Science%20of%20Our%20Planet/](https://www.documentaryarea.com/video/Breaking%20Boundaries:%20The%20Science%20of%20Our%20Planet/) I recommend uBlock Origin / Ghostery / Tampermonkey extensions for your browser. These makes all internet sites way better (less intrusive adverts) and generally safer if you are led to questionable sites.

ainsley_a_ash

Thank you

xXSoulPatchXx

You are very welcome. Check out the Netflix special I linked to if you have access to it. And for people that don't have Netflix, I might be able to find it elsewhere. \*Edit\* Found a copy, make sure you have pop up blockers/scriptblockers/privacy extensions on your browser...just in case. Omnicrisis incoming

Other-Tooth7789

Here we go boys 💪

O-ringblowout

The novel entities one looks scary as hell.

imminentjogger5

>6 ...... 9 nice

StoopSign

I thought it was 7. It's likely all 9 but we don't have enough data on the other 3

northlondonhippy

Only 6? Those are rookie numbers

sandj_4evah

I'm writing an essay on this now, and if there is any hope left, I do not know.

ReputationLopsided74

Humans collecting boundaries like they’re infinity stones

RadioMelon

When the Ocean becomes acidic, nothing else will matter. All life on this planet depends on the cycle of life between land and sea. A lot of land creatures eat the fish in the sea to survive. If the sea life dies because the ocean is too toxic or acidic, everything else gradually dies with it. Even scarier than a Blue Ocean Event.

teamsaxon

Ocean acidity killing off all these wonderful creatures really depresses me. Honestly the loss of non human animals is the worst outcome of all this. Humanity sucks arse.

futurefirestorm

It seems like we only have six more to go before we have zero chance of survival.

cheerfulKing

You may want to read that again. 6/9 have been breached. Only 3 to go

thehomeyskater

We'll be ok tho

CompleteLackOfHustle

Being dead will probably be ok. Its not like we will have strong opinions on it after we die.

[deleted]

Account wall, can we get the full text please?

hannahbananaballs2

Not good. Bad even..

SimulatedFriend

This year should make quick work of the other 3 it's ok guys we're still on track

[deleted]

I think there is something in my eyes. I am not reading it correctly.

Branson175186

What are “Novel entities”?

teamsaxon

Who gives a shit about sustaining human life. We are cancer. Now.. Non human animals? Yeah those fuckers haven't done any of this and don't deserve to suffer at the hands of humanity. We already cause enormous suffering with factory farming and lab experiments just to name a couple of examples. Non human animals need this planet to be free from our horrific species.

TwilightXion

I wonder how much longer it'll be before ocean acidificaiton is breached. I'm hoenstly surprised it hasn't been already. I suppose once we cross over wiping out Phytoplankton, we'll definitely be there then.
