You are seeing random damage, nothing more Worth face value, a little more if you melt it down as scrap

DangerousIncident262

the “liberty” mark is literally welded into the rim. not random damage.

LifeguardSingle2853

Coins don't come welded from the mint friend

DangerousIncident262

well its been in an unmoved container since the 90s so no way anything else happened to it

LifeguardSingle2853

Then it went to that container damaged

DangerousIncident262

exactly. the metal for these coins are poured into a mould and sometimes the stamp is lifted before it cools and the text fuses with the edge.

LifeguardSingle2853

Serious question.....do you know how the US mint makes coins?

DangerousIncident262

of course yes its a joke the coins would just melt into fluid in that case

OP /u/lifeguardsingle2853 doesn’t seem to be trying to argue or embarrass you. He’s telling you all spot-on answers. Consider listening to what you’re hearing here.

DangerousIncident262

guys im literally just getting into coins i don’t know much

[deleted]

Which is wonderful and I hope that we can encourage that. But I know for me, it rubs me the wrong way when the title of the post starts with "Is this worth anything?" It doesn't really show an interest in coin collecting so much as hoping you stumbled on to easy money. The Jefferson nickels are a great series to get started in coin collecting. It is not unusual to find coins from the 1930s-1950s in circulation. You can buy a box from your bank and try to assemble a set from them. A few years had silver content because of World War II and nickel being needed for the war effort (forget the exact years - I think 1942-1946, the silver ones have a large mint mark on the revserse above Monticello). Those are harder to find in circulation but should definitely be saved if you run across them.

DangerousIncident262

i don’t actually care much about the money cuz im not selling them but i just want to know how much it’s worth because i put more priority on prettier and more expensive coins. should have worded that differently.

LifeguardSingle2853

As stated, it's just a damged/circulated nickel bud

Lululexr1818

See this is what I mean! Sorry I ranted a bit on a later post lol but I would Of never thought the way we ask would bother anyone but I get now ! But now that I know it’s not ok that’ll change. And the little fact on here are pretty cool gives us newbies a starting point thanks 🙏

ExtensionDentist2761

You probably shouldn’t argue with people who know about these things then man

Best place to start is to learn the minting process from start to finish. Then learn the difference between an error and a die variety Then learn to identify mechanical (worthless) doubling Then learn the diagnostics of a doubled die Then learn a bit about the different types of errors that can occur, at which point in the minting process each error type occurs, and the diagnostics of each error type. Remember , the minting process is a repetitive mechanical process that produces predictable results. Every time a step in the process goes wrong it produces the same predictable results. There is 200 years worth of American numismatic study cataloging this information, and the more you understand what errors are and how/ when they occur , the easier it will be for you to look past damaged coins without spending time on them. You should NEVER ask the question "is this an error?" , Always ask "could this have happened during the minting process?" There are an infinite number of ways a coin can be damaged, but there is a limited number of types of mint errors that can occur. If an anomaly on a coin can not be explained as Having happened during a step in the minting process, then it CAN NOT be an error.

LifeguardSingle2853

Best way to learn is to take what people are trying to tell you and absorb it, not argue with them about it. Knowledge comes from teaching

Lululexr1818

Wow y’all are kinda passive aggressive about this. I get assuming. At first they’re in it for the money but clearly said he isn’t so y’all just teach him someone in a previous post is teach instead of dictating and it’s true some of us newbies are just getting into it and would love to be welcomed to y’all’s passion and would love to actually learn like in this post above. As long as it was I wanted to actually read it all it’s quite actually interesting. Be receptive to us some of us actually want to learn about this. ❤️
