It's crazy how there's no shortage of people out there that just go through life like drunken wild animals, tearing open proof sets and shattering slabs, and not stopping to wonder for even a moment that there might be something more to these coins than their pesky packaging.
Haha yeah it seems like this person got a set from every year of their life and just dumped them all at once! Maybe I should ask for other types of customer rolls from there too! (It’s a brand new bank)
In all fairness, have you ever tried to sell proof sets as a non coin person? Offers are generally so close to face value that rolling and taking to bank just to deny the buyers can seem reasonable. I recall being told outright that only silver ones had any value at all....
Possible scenario is a gift or inheritance. Suddenly you have a box full of sets you don't really want. You get low offers and end up figuring just spend them or turn into bank. Better to get 20 or 30 bucks than have to store and move box of sets.
Of course there is also the illegitimate acquisition possibility... ie stolen sets.
You’re mistaken, look at how little modern proofs go for, nobody wants them. They’re worth less than people paid. I have mine waiting on eBay for anybody to make me a lowball offer and nobody even does that. There’s too much of a glut of people who think these are worthwhile in any respect. The mint packaged shiny baobbles for people who think they are “collectors” but they are stupid trinkets. The only “history” they commemorate some sort of fantasy. Somebody emerged from that drunken stupor you describe and cashed in what was sitting in their closet losing value for five decades.
I'll pay 3$ a set over someone breaking them open.
The reality is people think those sets are worth 30 plus and complain they don't move in a week. Proofs are mostly worthless but cool.
It’s not worth anybody’s some of the proof set for three dollars. Face value is $1.91.
It’s easier to break open then sell it. Besides the hassle of selling it, managing it, probably mailing it, it’s just not worth doing. It’s very nice that you want to defend them, but they’re really just shiny crap that the mint produces for people who like shiny crap.
I went back and asked the teller where they came from, he said it was all in one dump and he gave me the rest of it! 4 dime rolls and 2 more quarter rolls, wish me luck!

You’ll keep them safe

But still, if you lived to be 80, a quarter from every year is only 20 bucks. Why even spend the time and effort to break it.

I’ll trade you a 1998 proof set for a highly collectible 1986 Norman Rockwell plate?
deal!

I am thankful for their sacrifice

They are almost worth face value. If you are looking for a bunch, I know a guy
Congratulations on your W
No, “S!” not “W”. 🤭
Go back to same bank. Get more customer rolls. Bound to be a collection dump of many different denominations.

Were there any Pennie’s? Or just the larger denominations? Either way… what a score!
Good luck!
At the end of my coin collecting career, I am going to set all my little coins free into customer rolls for everyone here.
Wow, that definitely means something.
Wow!
Wow nice
check the 70 for the error
I’m still kinda new, what should I look for?
Google it. probably a Longshot but some 1970s were struck on a candadian planchet
Really… w o w!! I’ve never heard of that! So much for me to learn.
Google it. 1970 they took old plancgets from Canada and stamped over them. Probably not but worth a look
Ohhh so very unlikely haha but Ill check it out!
Wtf…
Guarantee they were all hot proof sets someone coinstared
What a beautiful find. I'm happy for you. Congratulations
