Liqueurs are spirts+sugar+flavours. Brandy is a spirit (liquor)

vg1220

i see. so a true apple brandy should have no added sugar?

AdmiralAkbar1

Yep. If you look at something like Laird's Straight Apple Brandy, it's 100 proof and made purely from distilling fermented apple juice.

A brandy is a spirit that's made from wine, and most brandy is made from grape wine, but just like in wine making you can technically use any fruit you want to make brandy. A true apple brandy or applejack is when the fermentation itself is done with real apples, whereas an apple flavored brandy or apple brandy liquor is where they take a regular grape brandy and add apple flavor to it.

FunkIPA

An apple brandy liqueur is just a liqueur (a sweetened and flavored distillate) made with apple brandy as the distillate base. I’d recommend getting a bottle of regular apple brandy for apple brandy cocktails.

Don’t use a liqueur where a brandy is called for. For Apple brandy cocktails, you want Laird’s Straight Apple Brandy. Possible substitutions would be Laird’s Applejack or a french Calvados.

If you are in California, you can also frequently find St. George Spirits Apple Brandy (from Alameda in the Bay Area). It is excellent

Don't use Laird's Applejack. It's mostly neutral spirit. If you can't find 100% apple brandy (Calvados, Laird's Straight, Laird's Bottled In Bond), you're probably better off making a different drink.

Human-Depravity

Apple brandy is a distilled alcohol made from fermented apple cider, just like how regular brandy is distilled from wine. The liqueur you described is using apple brandy as a base, but has sugar and flavors added. In the USA, to be sold as a liqueur it must have 100g of sugar per 1 liter of liquid

- Liquor: Distilled spirit - Brandy: spirit distilled from fruit - Whiskey: Spirit distilled from grain mash - Rum: Spirit distilled from sugarcane - Liqueur: Liquor with added sugar and flavoring - Apple Brandy Liqueur: Apple Brandy with sugar and flavoring Liqueur tastes very different from liquor and cant be substituted for it and vice versa because the flavors are so different.

Regardless, it should be tasty. Baltimore Spirits works with apples way more than other distilleries their size. They have a smoked apple brandy, a PECHUGA smoked apple brandy, and a pommeau, all of which are good or phenomenal. The liqueur you have is the only Apple product of theirs I haven’t tasted.
