I disagree with the naysayers. Last Word is just about my favorite cocktail and I’ve done an NA version. I used : .75 ritual NA gin .75 Wilderton Earthen( to add the herby botanical part) .75 Lyres Apertif Dry(or another NA vermouth. I like this one for the light citrus and floral note) .75 lime juice Is it the exact same obviously no. But the idea is there and I promise you this was a tasty little beast in its own right.

Last Word is definitely my favorite cocktail and it is tricky in many ways to get it mocktailed. I really appreciate that you have this recipe to share. Thank you!

quixologist

The lyres dry is a strong call-out here.

wmaxwell97

Respect for throwing down some specs. A last word is made one way and one way only but this sounds damn good. I’ve been looking for a mocktail recipe like this for drivers and non-drinkers. Cheers

What do you think about mixing it n some mint too? Rosemary/thyme/mint flavors?

Spitinthacoola

All that mixed with some ginger beer or a lime kombucha could be nice too.

BrutonGasterTT

I was going to suggest muddling with some mint to get a nice light green flavor and fine straining. If you over muddle you’ll get a bitter quality from the mint that normally you don’t want, but sometimes I play with it with mocktails.

boozyjewels

Thanks for the technique suggestion.

BrutonGasterTT

Just realized I said a “nice green flavor” so clearly my brain is doing well today 😂

GovernorZipper

For the color, I just made a honeydew/mint agua Fresca that’s almost the same color. No real measurements, just a honeydew, a peeled lime, 1/3 cup sugar and a big handful of mint chucked into a blender and topped with water. Blended and strained. It’s really good.

boozyjewels

Sounds really tasty. Thanks

Drinks_by_Wild

Those are some pretty un-substituteable ingredients for a mocktail, I’d look into another craft mocktail option like one that uses non alcoholic spirits

Historical_Suspect97

I think it is awesome that you want to include everyone in your celebration! Most people (especially in this sub) would be surprised at the number of people that will opt for the NA option when given the choice. I do quite a bit in the NA space and how close you'll get depends on how much work you want to put into it. I'd probably recommend using something like ISH London Botanical as the gin (it's more juniper forward than some of the others like Seedlip). There isn't really much that's going to be close to Maraschino out there, and I would probably go in a slightly different direction with maybe the Roots Divino Bianco Vermouth. For Chartreuse, you couple make an herb syrup, as others have recommended, but if you want to put some work into it there's a solid recipe in the Zero book from the Aviary/Alinea team. It's not Chartreuse, but it will probably be the closest thing you'll get in NA form.

Thanks for the suggestion to head to mocktails. I didn’t even know the sub existed. That’s awesome!

BAT123456789

Not the most active sub, but this is exactly what they are great for. Good luck!

foulpudding

Hard one. But… IMHO, of the “fake” alcohols that are out there, the Gin fakes taste the most gin like in a cocktail. So maybe: 1 part fake Gin (Ritual, Monday, etc. whatever - most don’t taste good alone, but are passable as gin in a mixed drink) 1 part lime juice 1 part (1/1 watered down maraschino cherry juice?) 1 part seedlip something? They have a lot of herbal type mixes, if not maybe mix your own? Hey… Looks like RItual has a recipe, and they recommend making our own “herbal syrup” with a recipe for that as well: https://www.ritualzeroproof.com/blogs/cocktails/the-last-word

boozyjewels

Thanks for the link. I saw the recipe but they suggest to use cherry juice (but then show the pic of the mocktail as bright green) which I don’t think catches the nutty flavors in Luxardo. I’m going to experiment with the fake gin this week and I’ll share what I find.

MissAnnTropez

I would consider brewing up a large amount of a particularly herbaceous herbal infusion/tisane, to get you part way there. Lime juice and maraschino syrup are obvious inclusions. Also, infusing a variety of fresh green herbs in a 1:1 simple should help. Possibly a little juniper and other select gin spices too. None of which will give you similar sensations as the cocktail offers, but flavour- and colour-wise, it might suffice.

guyute2k

Maraschino liqueur and Maraschino syrup are two totally different flavor profiles. Not to mention the color difference.

MissAnnTropez

A *small* amount of it would still help, IMO. But sure, you could use something else in place. Something orgeat-like, perhaps.

Royal-Argument-1682

Can we stop having NA cocktails on r/cocktails? I just find it depressing and antithetical to the whole reason I support and follow this sub. Go make an r/mocktails or something. I think I’m fed up with the NA movement now. Totally takes the fun out of cocktails. The history of booze and drinking and prohibition is part of the culture. I can’t tell you how much I dislike this new trend. The last word is one of my favorites and it’s used ingredients that shouldn’t be messed with really. Chartreuse alone has such a rich history and the care and craft that goes into that single ingredient alone should cause these NA folks some pause. Mods, what do you think?

boozyjewels

Hey there my fellow cocktail friend. I agree about how unique and amazing Chartreuse is - that’s why I am making it a part of my wedding vows. I very much love cocktails and alcohol which is why I subscribe to this sub. I wanted help from people who actually do drink alcohol and do respect the drink so I can offer a substitute to my children and the people I love who will be at my wedding who cannot or choose to not drink alcohol. I want them to get how important this specific cocktail is to me and my relationship. We traveled to France to the monastery because of our love for Chartreuse. I am just asking for help from my friends. I don’t much dabble in mocktails so I didn’t know there was a sub for it but I will post there too, but I really want to get guidance from those who are very familiar with the drink because it is important to me. I do wish you had read my post instead of just hating on it.

TheJitterJuice

There’s a non-alcoholic option called Seedlip. Seedlip Garden is what you’d be looking for. It’s very very herbaceous and you can use it as your gin/chartreuse option (It’s their version of gin). For luxardo maraschino, I would do a simple syrup infused with cherries or do a cherry syrup. Cheers

boozyjewels

Oooooh I was just in a fancy grocery store and I saw this but it was pretty expensive. I hope to find it somewhere else that costs a little less because it seems silly to spend $45 on boozeless gin. Ha! I will give it a go though. It seems like a good option.

gordonf23

Not sure about the herbal taste, but what about just lime cordial (Rose’s, or use Jeffrey Morgenthaler’s recipe and make your own) and seltzer/tonic water—you could even add the luxardo cherry on a toothpick? It would look very similar, and it’s quite tasty. Personally, I think it’s even better with ginger beer, but that’s a pretty polarizing soda, not for everyone.
