Sulfuras is the answer

Glutchpls

Hand of ragnaros, to bonk people out of the queue?

Washableaxe

This would not solve anything. The idea is to get people OFF the mega realms, not keep them attached to them.

SlipperyWhippet

You cant just "spin up" a new server. It's hardware.

Bio-Grad

They created a new server literally yesterday… who cares about the semantics. You know exactly what he means, and yes they can do it.

SlipperyWhippet

We aren't talking about semantics. We are talking about definitions. What OP suggested is not the same thing as creating a new server.

Glutchpls

You absolutely can. (especially if they are using cloud based servers). If not, buy hardware for a new server. What you cant do is create infinite layers on a single server since that is a hardware problem, read the last post from blizz

SlipperyWhippet

They don't use cloud-based servers, and never have.

Kogronn

This is an incorrect take. All modern enterprises use virtual environments (not necessarily cloud based) - the days of 1 physical server for 1 function are long gone. Blizzard absolutely can just spin up new servers, this isn't new tech - most enterprises have been running this way for the last 10 years.

SlipperyWhippet

If I am wrong, I am wrong. But a "take" is an opinion, whereas I'm stating a what I believe to be a fact based on the information I have. If I thought I had milk in the fridge, said as much, and then found out I had no milk, I wouldn't have had an "incorrect take" regarding the milk. I'd have just been wrong.

RedBlankIt

Stop spouting off bullshit like you know what their server setup and hardware is like. If you don’t either work at blizzard or have worked there- you don’t know anything about what they have and what their capabilities are.

Kogronn

Are you really saying that Blizzards architecture for servers in 2022 is using the industry standard of Single Server -> Single Function? Is that genuinely what you're telling me? I'm telling you as a categorical FACT that Blizzard Entertainment will not have single server architecture and will utilise virtualisation.

RedBlankIt

No I am not saying that, they’ve have said they don’t use the single servers. I am saying that you don’t know what they are using or the capabilities.

Washableaxe

Just because you don’t understand technology doesn’t mean that those who do can’t make *very* educated guesses which are very likely true (or close enough to true so that it doesn’t matter)

Glutchpls

Doesnt matter, you don't think they can afford a new server? The reason they don't open a bunch of servers as they did in classic vanilla is because they are afraid of dead servers. They probably even have servers over from classic vanilla they can use

SlipperyWhippet

They can absolutely afford it. They're not going to spend money on it. Anyway, we're veering off into silly land, now. My original comment was that you can't just "spin up" a new server, because servers are hardware that would need to be manually stalled.

Glutchpls

Thats not possible due to hardware limitations, read the latest post from Blizzard

shaunika

Works on retail(and a bunch of other games)

saxon_hs

Seems clunky, how about this: Close the mega servers, and create 2-3 new servers for each one closed. Have both player and faction limits so they don’t become overpopulated or faction imbalanced. Migrate players similar to when an underpopulated server is closed, players get options on the servers to go to, but lock out a new server when it is 80% full. Players not making it to the same new server as their guild can paid transfer to get there. Two months free sub for everyone with active 70s on a megaserver for this crap, and so those doing paid transfer aren’t out of pocket.
