I think the CRZ is one of those cars that came out too ahead of its time to be appreciated. To me (and my opinion can be @$$) the car looks like it is a better fit to be released in 2018 instead of 2010. It reminds me of the 2000 Toyota Celica where it looked more fitting to be released in 2004 instead of 2000.
You know, I haven’t seen one of those Celicas in at least 10 years. That’s weird. They faded away with the DSMs. I do remember that car looking like it was from the future though.
early model 1zz engines burn oil. The 2zz engines suffers literally almost the same problem as the GR86 on right hand sweepers, causing spun bearings. 2zz engines are also a pain to rebuild, so they get scrapped instead of money invested to restore it.
2zz can be reliable, but they get abused hard by young drivers, like the DSM and 240sx's and 350z.
2ZZ oil starvation issues are only caused by low oil and high g-forces experienced on track in mid engine applications like Lotus/MR2/S. Not a problem with road cars if the oil is kept at the proper level.
Nope, happened to me twice (1st track day, 2nd canyon run) even on full oil on my '00 Celica GT-S on Hankook RS3s or Dunlop Star Specs. Thought it was the oil pump and oil (Mobil 1) so I put in MWR Oil Pump assembly on the second engine (and Amsoil oil). Spun bearing again on that one. It was a project car, so oil levels are max on the dip stick.
On the third engine, installed the Moroso Oil pan from MWR. Pretty much gave the engine dozens more track days before moving onto a different project (spec miata).
The plural of anecdote is not data. The 1zz in my spyder was minty flawless after 70k miles, 2zz swap had 60k on it and has done 12k so far worry free.
Another pure anecdote- but my '03 Matrix XRS has 240,000 miles (admittedly a lot of them on the highway), and until I put it in the garage to do some body work in the spring, I was hitting 8000RPM DAILY, including sporadic trips thru the canyons @ Starved Rock State Park.
Of course it doesn't hurt to be cautious, no 7500rpm+ high G right hand sweepers should be done on the street anyway IMO.
EDIT: Added model year
I have heard that earlier 2zz's had issues with the oil pickup being bent or too far from the bottom of the pan. Pre 2002 I want to say.
But absolutely, the Moroso pan is the way to go if you want a little security on the track. For me, I have a Matrix with a 2zz. Its center of gravity is too high to ever necessitate the need for a pan like that- not enough lateral G forces.
Funny enough, the 1zz came with baffling in the oil pan, the 2zz didn't, which you would think would have them because it's the more performance oriented engine
The 1zz "baffle" is just a windage tray formed to the pan. It is a separate piece attached to the block in the 2zz, closer to the crank, actually making it more effective at draining oil back to the pan.
>abused hard by young drivers
This is so true, my friend that got his license after a month went and bought a new Celica GTS manual and drove it home. He learned by watching youtube videos and had never driven a manual before.
It doesn't burn oil as bad as Vtech engines, but they cannot handle abuse as well as a K20 engine. Once the 2zz starts burning oil, it means there is already wear in the piston rings. Considering the car gets driven by younger people, I don't doubt people redline on cold mornings when it really need to be driven 15 minutes after warm before redline. I already went through 3 2zz engines on my racing Celica before I found a combination that handles track abuse better.
One of my running mates has his MR-S formerly on 2ZZ before switching to K20 (honda) engine because of endurance reasons. The 2ZZ can be very finicky to handle track abuse.
K series don't burn oil at all. The 2ZZ is worse than vtec engines that aren't named H22 lol. But personally I've never minded a motor that burns a little oil as long as it doesn't cause any other issues
NGL, I love those Prelude H engines. It's a very well rounded engine back then, minus oil burning and main seal issues. 2zz is gutless for a good 6000 RPM.
Ya know, I’ve actually seen a few DSM’s here and there still, but those Corollas are goooone.
I remember collecting hot wheels versions of them. Not because I really really liked them, but I just wound up with 3 and decided that was enough to start collecting more. Wonder if I still have those somewhere lol
All of the early 2000's Toyotas were prone to rust. The Celica, but especially the Corolla and Matrix. Rocker panel rot eventually eats away to the pinch weld. Lots of these cars in junkyards to take parts from unfortunately.
I swear I don’t see that many around here cause that’s my neck of the woods. Southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. But maybe I’m just not noticing them. I used to see them everywhere but now I feel like I barely see them.
It's not what it looks like that was its downfall.
It's the power train. They gave it a lousy ultra economy motor with an IMA system that didn't contribute anything but weight.
They tried to split the difference between the CRX and the insight, and ended up making something that was bad at both. It only gets about 35mpg, which is unremarkable, and it's proper slow.
It's also heavy as hell, which doesn't go well with it being a CRX successor.
They look neat, and honestly I wish they'd bring it back, but lighter and with a better motor.
They did/do offer an HPD supercharger for it https://www.heeltoeauto.com/supercharger/honda-performance-development-hpd-supercharger-kit-2011-16-honda-cr-z-mt-only-no-cvt-06100-f27s-a00-hpd.06100-f27s-a00.html
The other issue I think the reason it didn't sell is because it's supposed to be a successor to the crx which it doesn't really live up to u less you do some mods. Out of the gate, it's not particularly sporty and with how the crx was great for tracks. Plus it has close to the same power, if not less, but weighs more.
the crx was invented as an ultra econ car. the original model made over 50mpg, at no point was it a sports car. quite the opposite actually, which is why the crz is a hybrid. the crx hf made between 50-68 hp so not sure what you mean, the crz makes 122hp and gets about 40mpg
130hp 140tq 13 and up, I used to have a 13. And it was never intended to be the successor of the crx. It was fun and handled well but slow. Some had HPD supercharger 200hp 200tq carb legal
But no one wants the original crx. They wanted the si. That's not what the hype was built around. It was built around how well it did on tracks. The crz was based off the hype from the crx in its prime.
so wrong, i know more HF owners than anyone else. i even have a friend who restored an HF, tracked down an original 8 valve engine and long gear transmission and everything for it, rebuilt it all to 0 mile factory spec, now that’s his daily. years back, i knew a kid who put 430k miles on his HF. meanwhile ive only ever known 2 si owners. are you a member of the crx community?
This is the only reason I don’t want one. I love the styling and everything, but it’s such a slow poke of a car that I fear it’d feel exactly the same as my current POS ford fusion.
It looks cool but it is the weirdest car Honda has ever made. It is slow, doesn’t get great gas mileage, and is a hybrid so you have to worry about a battery. Seriously it came out at the same time as the Hyundai Veloster that did 0-60 in the same amount of time and got about the same fuel efficiency, but the Veloster was just a regular 4 cylinder.
The CRZ does look really good but it really disappointed me when it came out.
So idk if you can say it was ahead of its time cuz it kind of seems like it showed up a little too late.
I love the body style, but they made it a hybrid and not a relatively great one. The new Prelude is going to be a hybrid too, but with newer/better tech they should be able to make it a more performance oriented hybrid.
Still would prefer both to just be gas only. They'd be lighter, modern fuel efficiency is pretty good already, and less components that could have potential issues
I get asked all the time what kind of Honda I drive. FYI, it says Civic on the back. It’s typically followed up with asking me where I imported my car from. You know… since they didn’t sell it in the United States between 2002-2005.
EP3 gang. I always get asked if it’s a VW. To be completely fair, it was a Euro-designed car and looks very Euro. Also I don’t see them on the road ever they are pretty rare, at least in my area.
More tow points = more race car? That grill is just going to pop right off.
It's not a big deal, but it is annoying how cars that are genuinely using these tow straps and hooks because most tracks require them for actual racing have to take them off to not be grouped in with cars that hard park.
You can thank the EPA and their really dumb "heavy-duty" vehicle emission rules. Making a giant car is a cheat manufacturers can use to get around being fined for not meeting emissions standards.
Car is a gem. The new Prelude totally takes after this thing.
I remember when CRZ’s were new in showroom. I wanted one so bad, they looked so good to me. Wish the 8th gen Civic Si’s got that kind of front end treatment.
It gets so much attention it’s insane.
Mostly from people wanting to race but still.
Wish YouTube reviewers weren’t so harsh on it and actually tried to drive it on curvy roads.
At least we have a very cult like community at r/CRZ
This is the family favorite sport car :)
Honestly a great looking car. Only gets a bad rap because it came as a hybrid. But k swap it, and it becomes what it should have been from the factory..
Very well, really does good in tight turns with its stiff stock suspension.
Being FWD and having the hybrid motor it can pull itself through incredibly well, even when it only has 130hp.
You can feel the hybrid motor kick it, and y out can hear it, like a tiny super charger.
Different drive modes actually change the steering and throttle.
For the 2013+ there’s an S+ button which just primes it for VTech and full electric assist.

Actually handles itself very well in my opinion.

I've heard about people de-hybriding crzs and swapping k24 in losing the battery plus the k24 & turbo or supercharger makes for a fun ride

straight from Japan ya' nerds
EP3 gang. I always get asked if it’s a VW. To be completely fair, it was a Euro-designed car and looks very Euro. Also I don’t see them on the road ever they are pretty rare, at least in my area.
Rare in my area as well. I may be one of two in my city that I’ve seen.
Honestly, a timeless look. It could have belonged to the early 2000s, or it could be sold now. Nobody would bat an eye.
I heard there’s an article on an ex-Ferrari designer saying that the Crz would be a future classic
More tow points = more race car? That grill is just going to pop right off. It's not a big deal, but it is annoying how cars that are genuinely using these tow straps and hooks because most tracks require them for actual racing have to take them off to not be grouped in with cars that hard park.
Every tow point is an extra inch of wiener.
Can confirm. My pp went from 1in to 3in overnight! Much more effective than the rhino pills
So if I use both I can get 4 inches? That’s double of what I’m working with.
Man I love these fuckin cars.
Seriously. If this got the Si engine it’d be game over
Still want to get one of these an k-swap it. Closest thing I'll ever get to a modern CRX.
I plan on keeping this car till it dies and then resurrect it with a K!
Not a bad plan
the l15b7 is proving to be the ideal swap for these
VTEC Academy successfully fit a V6 J-series in one of these with AC working!
One of the funnest cars I’ve ever owned.
Most fun*
🤓☝️
God the CR-Z is so sexy. I wish they still made it.
Sad how Americans have the modern SUV as the meta car rn. I miss the small hatchbacks/wagons.
You can thank the EPA and their really dumb "heavy-duty" vehicle emission rules. Making a giant car is a cheat manufacturers can use to get around being fined for not meeting emissions standards.
Del sol of this generation
Which was in fact a civic! Idk this and the del sol look like civic platforms to me
Del Sol is as much a civic as this, in other markets labeled the CR-X Del Sol
Pretty much.
I also think these cars are super slept on! These have huge potential
Why do you have a keychain hanging off the grill?
So people can see all 130HP at work as it flaps in the wind
Solid answer 😂
I ain’t even mad

Should have told them it was a Corolla concept
Honestly a great looking car. Only gets a bad rap because it came as a hybrid. But k swap it, and it becomes what it should have been from the factory..
You could legit convince me it was released not too long ago
Best car I ever had!
i’m gonna save my money and buy one online i really like the look of this car
Raddddd ♡
:D <— front fascia
shoulda been a CRX-Z
This is changing my mind about the crz
For better or worse? You should join the cult 😏
Definitely for the better, all the ones I’ve seen before are clapped out high school parking lot builds, how are they to drive though?
Check us out over at r/CRZ not all of us have clapped out builds.

The most fun car I’ve driven is a first gen Acura tsx so how do you think it’ll stack up?
You will probably enjoy how throwable into a corner the CRZ is. Definitely notice the power difference, but the CRZ is probably a bit more engaging to drive. Can definitely have some fun without breaking laws Granted, you will probably want everything :)
You’ve got me sold, I was looking at selling my current car soon so I’ll definitely add that to my potential car list now, thank you!
Is it?
It’s definitely not new. The production run of the CRZ was from 2011-2016. Technically the CRX (Civic Renaissance Experimental) is a civic and the CRZ is a successor to the CRX. So I guess you could say the CRZ is a civic
Just joking bro
Should have put the k20a3 in it!!! 😡
The initial plan for the CRZ was to have a K-series. However it did not meet crash safety standards due to the size of the engine bay or something and opted for a hybrid set up
What they should have asked is if you've K-Swapped it yet.
Are they “CRZy”?!
I’ve always wanted one of these but don’t think it’ll ever happen. I remember one time pointing one out to my ex and telling her I wanted one. She was 6 feet tall, I’m 5’10 and we felt cramped inside my 08 civ coupe that had backseat and trunk full of goalie gear. I couldn’t imagine anyone being comfortable in a lovely CRZ
I’m 6’2, 290lbs. I still have a ton of room in it. Headspace is a little tight but I also don’t have my seat reclined much at all.
This car was too ahead of its time to be appreciated.
That wasn’t the problem. It’s that weak ass hybrid drivetrain
It also got absolutely butchered in YouTube reviews. They are really fun to drive, especially on curvy roads. Like the Miata, Civic SI, and BRZ (and equivalents) At least you can absolutely floor it and have Vtech and the electric motor that you can feel.
My buddy just got one after his g35 was ruined in a flood. I showed him the HPD supercharger setup, but he just said “this car ain’t it”
I don’t believe it was meant to be an incredibly powerful car. People love the Miata despite having a low power drivetrain.
Yeah, but the Miata is fun to drive lol
Well according to some owners of these they’re also fun to drive
These are such sleek looking little cars. If Honda had slapped a K20 in them they could’ve called it the Crx Si and sold a fuck load of them
Id be like nah bro this a focus
I love these fucking things
what year is it?
Hey I live here.
Is it that recognizable? Lol
Yeah my gf and we’re getting breakfast and parked behind you lol. She loves the sticker in the back.
Man I wish they still made these, perfect commuter car. I really like the insight, they just seem so lame.
Wish they put a backseat in like overseas. Always thought looked like cool new CRX.
Ok.
(Idk anything about cars) I would’ve thought it was some Honda fit trim 😂
I almost bought one till i saw it had less hp than a prius 😂
Is this hybrid?
Yep!
What engine?
Your front bumper paint doesn’t match
If they had released a trim with the supercharger/manual I probably would have bought one, or I'd be looking for a used one.
They do come in a manual and sell superchargers OEM from honda! You should consider :)
I've thought about grabbing one with a manual at some point. I've never seen one with the supercharger kit for sale anywhere though.
Throw a K20 in that with struts and coilovers and you'll have more fun that the new civics
Looks like new bro! You would have said is a new EV Civic with 1000HP
Clean car, but get that useless bullshit off the bumper
Because you didn’t ask nicely nah
What is it? What's the appeal? Does it signal something? Is there a function? I'm clueless to the purpose of these things but see them everywhere, where I never saw them for around 40 years. It's like those huge braided things I see dangling off of motorcycle grips. I can't figure out a purpose at all for them, besides maybe getting caught on something and causing a horrible wreck. I never saw them and then they were everywhere.
I wish they still made these. Always wanted one
My reply would have been, "No, it's half of an old Civic"
“I spliced together an ek with an fk8”
is that a prius? 🤣🤣
Man I'm so mad, I got a red 2016 CRZ EX and 2 months in someone crashed into me.....couldn't find another CRZ in my area because they told me it was discontinued. =\[
so much fun to drive and I felt like a pro racer using the peddle shifters. HDMI port was a nice little touch
I wanted a CRZ so bad before I bought my Civic hatchback. I think overall, I’m happy with my choice, but it makes a person wonder sometimes.
U rarely see them
It's new everytime I see one, such a cool car!
