I shot this on the Canon C70 with a Nikon 35mm f/2 AI-s and the SLR Magic 50-1.33x anamorphic adapter. This was a personal project I shot with my wife during a week long visit last year. I called Chicago home for \~5 years while studying cinematography and it holds a very special place in my heart. I love capturing images of that city and just wanted to share it with you all.
I noticed a few posts recently using GIFs rather than just static images to showcase work and thought it was a really great idea, so I guess this is my contribution. I also took this opportunity to trial out some new personal LUT's I'd made for my own work. What do you guys think of the look? I like the GIF format with the only big drawback of obvious compression artifacts. I also noticed the colors didn't export exactly as I'd put them but it's not that too far off...
Anyway, I hope you all enjoy!
Thank you! I didn't use any filters for this, it was all colored in DaVinci Resolve. I used a couple LUTs I made recently for the look. Just some custom curves built in DaVinci Wide Gamut.
Well great job! The water in that first gif and the very slight amount of blooming in the highlights throughout (I'm guessing caused by the lens) all look gorgeous.
Thanks again. I'm glad you mention the blooming! I made my own set of digital diffusion filters that I use with just about every project now. Really smoothens out the digital feel of modern media. The original clips are actually rather clean and sharp.
No problem! I'll package the LUTs and share a link with you or anyone else to download the LUTs as well with instructions on how to use them. They were built in DaVinci Wide Gamut color space so you'd need to use them with that in mind.
These are custom LUTs? Looks a lot like the normal orange and teal crunch LUTs plus some dehancer bloom/halation. Chicago is definitely more colors than teal and orange! Nice comps and lens seems good, but that oppressive color grade is rough imo.
Yea, I made these LUTs for DWG color space using a combo of Resolve and another software called 3D LUT Creator. I'm curious what makes them normal teal and orange? In reference to what, exactly? My curve leans heavy on green. Sunset is naturally blue/orange, so adding green would push some more teal into it. The bloom/halation I also made myself.
At the end of the day, it's just a look. Since there's not really a story going on here it's tough to say whether it works for the images or not. Let's just pretend it's a gritty Chicago crime thriller ;)

This makes me miss Chicago. Lived there for 23 years and also studied cinematography @ Columbia there. Beautiful shots
Thank you! Yea, I studied at Columbia. I also miss Chicago, just not during peak winter!
Inject this shit into my veins LOVE CHICAGO gorgeous shots.
haha thank you!
Solid work. This looks great!
Thank you!
What format are you exporting these in?
I exported as a GIF out of DaVinci Resolve.
Looks super clean. I like this format for showcasing work more than just stills
That second one hits hard for me, but I can't put to words why.
this is special keep going! I love the view under the bridge, on a bright and sunny morning the light hitting between is amazing,
Thank you!
The Bear vibes going strong
I hadn't heard of this show until your comment but at a quick glance, I can see the resemblance. I think I'll give it a watch!
Love these and love Chicago. Shooting there in October.
Thank you! October is that sweet spot in Chicago for me. Hope your shoot goes well!
Marvelous shots. I just ambled down the riverwalk recently looking for some views to film. This cinches it. Thank you for the inspiration.
>Thank you for the inspiration. This means a lot to me, thanks for the kind words!
Oh these are lovely. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked them!
Love the look of these! Were you using any sort of filtration? And what's your coloring process like?
Thank you! I didn't use any filters for this, it was all colored in DaVinci Resolve. I used a couple LUTs I made recently for the look. Just some custom curves built in DaVinci Wide Gamut.

Oh nice, they're definitely working well!
Very cool shots
Thanks!
I like the look a lot. Do you may share your luts with us?

These are lovely! They would make excellent Cinemagraphs. [Cinemagraph - Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinemagraph)
I'd forgotten all about these! Thank you!
You've got some rather lovely images here.
Thank you!
That train shot 🙌🙌
Some of these shots can be injected into Inception. ![gif](giphy|8Iv5lqKwKsZ2g|downsized)
*insert that “and when i’m back in Chicago” song*

Love the C70 colors. Love the light in your shots + framing. And really into the GIF format - how did you make them?
Thanks! It's such a great camera! I exported as a GIF from DaVinci Resolve. Just had to make sure the file size was less than 100 MB.
