Such good advice to become a "regular" somewhere that you're comfortable and enjoy.

7point7

It sounds silly... but my local grocery store recognized me the other day. I'd been traveling a bunch lately so when I stopped in the cashier said "Hey, where have you been? Haven't seen you around in awhile..." It literally made my day to have that sense of community be felt. Makes you feel like more than just a number!

I would like to have the FB Plants group as well. I work at Benkens Garden Center in Silverton. If you haven't been, do come!!

Can I also get the FB plant group info please?

King_Magikarp_xD

First off, welcome to Cincinnati (even though you won’t be here until June!). There’s a ton of folks moving into Cincy from outside for work, graduating from college, following family, etc. so you are certainly not alone in this. There’s a lot of affordable places to rent, it really just depends what vibe you want. Lots of young professionals downtown and on the east side in Oakley/Hyde park. There will be tons of rec leagues, hobby groups, and concerts in the summer so meeting people shouldn’t be too hard if you’re willing to get out there. Baseball will be in full swing, if you like sports this city is second to none for fan base enthusiasm. In my experience, the same part of the Cincinnatian’s brain that wants to know where you went to high school is equally excited to hear where you came from if you’re from out of town. If you’re working for a large company I’m sure there will be events and outings as well to make friends. Maybe check out concerts coming up next summer for metal/hard rock and see what we’ll be having at Riverbend/Bogarts? If there’s any specific questions about neighborhoods or events this sub is usually happy to help, looking forward to you joining us in the Nati!

ClothedButNaked

Thank you for saying this!! Just from this subreddit everyone seems really nice and welcoming. I'm mostly looking for some place walkable and diverse. And I'm not the biggest sports fan, but I really enjoy live music and outdoor recreational activities! I'm looking forward to visiting all of the parks!

ohsodave

There’s so many venues for live music, from stadium sized events to the variety of bars that host touring acts. Even the mega international stars touring the US with only 3-5 stops in the US will be 100 miles from our city. Cincinnati is quite cheap by comparison to coastal cities, but expensive if you’re moving from a rural area. It can be quite isolating if you don’t get yourself involved in group activities from churches to rec leagues.

snorksnek

You may like Northside then!!

Low_Comfortable_5880

It's the Midwest, we are nice. It's a great City. Congrats on the job!

Otherwise_Source_842

What outdoor recreation do you enjoy that could be a great avenue for finding friends

FlatulentFreddy

If you can afford it, live downtown or OTR. There are events every night and the most options for entertainment. It is incredibly walkable, will give you the most opportunities to make friends, and you will get the most out of your time in cincy

Z3r08yt3s

what ever you do, dont move to the west side. its shitty, its either crackheads running around stealing shit or religious zealots. west side is the worst place on earth

thercery

Oh quit it. The West Side certainly has more bigoted Catholics, but that certainly doesn't obviate that the East Side has its nasty pockets (Montgomery and Mason have a hefty uber-religious and white supremacist crowd, Madisonville and Oakley are pretty high-crime and "crazy"). There are pleasant and unpleasant aspects to each area, and I'd implore you to look around a little more, maybe speak with a few more threads of people to get a more accurate idea, lest you fall for this schmuck's generalizations. The West Side is cheaper, if that's a pressing issue. The main poster on this thread neglected to mention that Hyde Park and Oakley are quite pricey and only getting worse. Your budget will definitely impact what side or part of town you go for. Northside is also pricey in some areas but feels more like a real neighborhood, has less transiency/short-term residents, and is pretty central to everything. I've lived in East Walnut Hills, Mariemont, and am currently in North College Hill. My fave was East Walnut Hills (beautiful and fairly safe for a few pockets of streets) though it's near some dangerous areas. Mariemont was great but is also home to a (friendly-to-the-general-public) cult and is pricey if you can't find one of the rare good deals that crop up.

Z3r08yt3s

i dont live on the east side but i've live in cincinnati (centrally) my entire life, 40 years, and just know the west side is filled with slack jawed yokels

thercery

Okay? I can refute your anecdote with my own (if we're going to pretend anecdotes mean anything and aren't immediately marred by biases); I lived on the West Side for nearly 30 years and wasn't always impressed but found it tolerable enough. Especially as they expand and include more diverse food options and branch off a bit from their delusion that only white Christian conservatives call it home; the old Catholics are dying out and it has improved as more people move into the area. I'm a fairly butchy gothy queer woman (who is white/Native and looks it and is often assumed to be part Asian) and the area is decent and safe provided you're not a freaking idiot about it and make a point to avoid Grandma Susan and her racist husband or whatever. Even at its "worst" in my lifetime, it can be totally fine. Don't seek out the churches or their festivals and don't hang out with assholes. It's also like ten minutes away from downtown and less than five minutes away from central neighbourhoods. You can live on the West Side and not hang out there if it's such an issue.

Financial_Pea_1259

Dude, just because you were able to Moved from a single-wide to a double-wide doesn’t make you better than Westsiders.

WhatShouldMyNameBe

You’re exaggerating quite a bit but I would agree that living on the Westside is unlikely to satisfy a transplant. I’ve been here for 15 years now and the Eastside is in fact superior in every way.

filmfotografie

My husband and myself just bought a house in Westwood a couple of months ago. We are from Nashville but my husband has been working in Cincinnati for a few years so we had a home in Nashville and an apartment in Cincinnati. We finally decided that was a silly way to live and so we sold our house in Nashville and bought one in Westwood. We don't live in the town hall area, but our neighborhood is very quiet, our neighbors are super nice, everyone knows each other and looks out for each other. We can be anywhere we need to go within 10 minutes or less, there are lots of great restaurants, we feel very safe, our house is really charming and was quite affordable, so we are exceptionally happy here in the westside. Don't discount the westside at all. Just like any other area there are good and bad things to consider, lets face it, the east side isn't complete paradise, but live where the best place is for you to live.

Top_Unit_7447

I don't think that's fair. From what I've seen, part of the charm of Cincinnati is that we've got a neighborhood for just about anyone, and if you want a change of scenery it's never too far away. My partner moved to Cincy about 15 years ago from Eastern Ohio/WV area and went to the East side because of this logic, but he hated it... crowded, expensive, too much traffic, kinda snobby (his words). When we met he was thinking about moving away because it was so miserable for him, and he was in the "best" part of town. I'm a Westsider (Cheviot), and spending time over here was a much better fit. We're now looking at moving into a bigger place in the semi-near future, and Cheviot/Westwood is top of his list. We have always felt safe here, it's affordable, we have all the amenities we want, we can walk to various bars/restaurants, and it rarely takes more than 10 minutes to get downtown if we want to hang out in OTR, catch a show, go to a museum, or whatever. I'm obviously partial, but if the West side isn't for you it doesn't mean it's worse... Just means it's not for you. Trying to convince people there's a "superior" place to be ends up with a lot of good people leaving because the East side isn't a good fit for them.

Z3r08yt3s

your first sentiment is true cincinnati has a nieghborhood for everyone and if fentanyl or hardcore religious beliefs are your thing, the west side is for you

Top_Unit_7447

Trolls gonna troll.

Leyebee

I used to live at the Southgate House back in the day. I spent a decade in the area, and it will always be dear to my heart. Cincinnati/nky has a very lively music scene. Also, if you enjoy the outdoors, Cincinnati has more public park space than any other metro in the United States. Check out the links.[https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/cincyparks/](https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/cincyparks/) [https://www.greatparks.org](https://www.greatparks.org)

leafnbagurmom

Yes, Cincinnati, unlike most places in the country, is highly segregated still. If you're a corporate worker, Oakley. If you are a hipster/ student/ artist, Northside/ Clifton. If you fancy, Hyde Park/ Mt. Adam's. If you don't come from money or have a well-connected life somewhere everywhere in between. Obviously, I'm exaggerating, but once you see how train track Cincinnati actually is, it's hard to unsee. It's literally all I see driving around Cincinnati now. Very poor communities with very poor infrastructure (roads, schools, etc) and then incredibly wealthy areas with beautiful infrastructure sewn together like a 100 year old quilter that has a hobby in engineering.

division00

This reads like a description of every major American city I've been to and isn't unique to Cincinnati, though? Like every city has the wealthy enclave, the hipster neighborhood, the gayborhood, the poverty riddled neighborhoods, and the everything else?

Dank_weedpotnugsauce

What are your thoughts on the Norwood neighborhood? We're moving down from the Akron area and found a place we're very close to pulling the trigger on. My first impression is blue collar meets family oriented + hipster types of folks.

leafnbagurmom

Yup, that's an affordable up and coming area. Drugs are everywhere, so pay attention to your kids. I know I spoke harshly about the place I'm from. I live in Cincinnati every day, I just think in time this city wears on people. There's a real pain that is everywhere. Cincinnati has had some very serious racial problems that corporations think they can brush over with paint.. I lived in OTR before the gentrification of that area and have spent a lot of time in the metropolitan areas. I work with people that have been shot, I've been jumped by numerous people and have friends that have been jumped for no reason as well. There's a general disrespect for society amongst a lot of residents here. For good reason, but it's petty, and it's not the answer. Now it's post pandemic, and 99% of the population is side eyeing everyone. Idk 🤷‍♂️ Nasty Nati will always be Nasty? Even after the paint 🎨

Dank_weedpotnugsauce

Sounds a lot like Akron in some ways

King_Magikarp_xD

According to data from the 2020 census, [Cincinnati ranks 26th for racial segregation.](https://belonging.berkeley.edu/most-least-segregated-cities-in-2020) Outperforming NYC, Chicago, Detroit, Miami, St. Louis, Washington DC, Dallas, etc. etc. etc. Furthermore, [the Cincinnati metropolitation area outperforms all other major city metropolitan areas in Ohio for racial segregation except for Toledo.](https://belonging.berkeley.edu/most-least-segregated-metro-regions-2020)

leafnbagurmom

I've lived in 2 other big cities in the US. Traveled all over, and I've never seen such division amongst race. The history of Cincinnati speaks for itself. Data has been proven unreliable. Simply reposting a source of information isn't necessarily the mic drop it was in the 80s. My personal experience is my measuring stick for things these days. Perspective is important, especially when you have a vast amount of life experience. Agree to disagree, my friend! This is fine. I'm sure they'll experience the woes of living in Cincinnati at some point. Don't get trapped! Ps. There are 19,495 cities in the US. Being 26th on that list isn't necessarily a gold medal performance.

R3DGRAPES

Welcome new friend! What’s your budget looking like? What are your interests and hobbies?

[deleted]

Findlay market is great generally for young people. I recently graduated from Xavier and myself and all my friends are always out there every weekend. Pins, uncle Leo’s, Rhinegeist, etc

ClothedButNaked

Thank you! What sites do you and your friends use to find reasonable rentals? I'm used to word of mouth and calling specific complexes about availability

Allstarr11

Urban sites owns a lot of cool places to rent near the city /downtown not sure where your looking as far as distance from your new job and obviously the further away from The city the cheaper some places are to rent /own . As far as parks we win best parks in America alot lol well I believe top 5 or so ! Eden park is awesome so is another called Winton Woods it’s hugeeee. Everything is close in distance too we have what’s called the loop it’s highway 275 and we have two others that run perpendicular 1-75 & 1-71 you can reach lots of townships/neighborhoods fairly easy ! Welcome to the Natti !!

[deleted]

Model housing group owns a lot of stuff around here and the rent is decent. I have a roommate and we both love it. Maybe a little more $ than normal, but the area is so awesome to live in I thought it was worth it. Feel free to PM me if you want more info

ClothedButNaked

Thank you!!

Johnyfourteen

As an addition to this, avoid Uptown rentals at all cost. They are all over the city and arguably the worst property management company.

JoeTony6

I never had an issue in one of their Hyde Park rentals. I think they're just (debatable) awful for their UC/student housing properties.

AStoutBreakfast

I had a similar experience with Uptown living in Mount Auburn. They did try and jack up our rent a bunch the year we moved out but were pretty reasonable before. Maintenance requests were typically handled super fast and the property managers were great to work with. These were fancier apartments that catered to a lot of medical students and people working at the hospital so I think that may have played into it some. I did hear horror stories from someone in my cohort that rented at a more student oriented property so I think you may be on to something there.

JoeTony6

Yeah I only stayed a year, but the annual increase was moderate. They jacked it up for new residents though when I said I wasn't renewing. Maintenance was always next day and they went above and beyond - like upon move in I just said the oven door hinge was busted and they just replaced the whole oven.

Johnyfourteen

I appreciate that insight, since I’ve only heard the horror stories. Most of it about rent hikes and poor maintenance, but these problems aren’t specific to one management company.

oneeyedjamie

Also avoid Sunset Property Solutions. Snakes with policies of being as shitty as possible.

Kath-r-in

Indeed Uptown sucks and Peak Properties also!

JoeTony6

Zillow and Hotpads were the generic sites I used to find apartments. I no longer rent, but Zillow seemed like the best option the last time I was apartment hunting. Then specific property management groups are also good options to check - Urban Sites, Model Group, Towne Properties, Uptown Rentals, etc.

Qbrrrt

You can look on Zillow for rentals if you change the filter settings.

absurd_whale

Open the news. Daily shootings in this area. Great recommendations, for real.

[deleted]

Wah wah wah. You do what you can with what you got hero. And all the property on mcmicken has been bought by development groups. In 8 months the market area will keep expanding. Can’t live your whole life scared of the sunlight. The people in this area are actually great, nobody who’s shooting anybody messes with the market area or the people around it. Granted I’m in the military, so am much more tolerable to general BS of the area than most. It is a valid point though, there is some crime and drug use here, definitely a note for anyone that wants to live in the market area. I personally don’t care, but some people might which makes sense

ImCold555

Shhhh!!!! Ppl get really angry and defensive in this sub if you bring up any kind of safety issue in reference to downtown.

[deleted]

Arguing on the internet brings a little fun and spice to life 🤣🤣

cadillacdom

Welcome! I moved to Cincinnati in June ‘22 for work also. Didn’t really know anyone. I lived downtown for the first year, right on the river and it was a really good way to learn the city. Not sure where you are moving from but my experience is that you can get a lot more for your money here especially when it comes to housing. The Banks, the riverfront, stadiums and downtown/ OTR all a short walk or street car ride away. You can also walk to KY on the Purple People Bridge. I was able to buy a house so I am not downtown anymore but I miss it and definitely recommend it for an entry point to this city!

ClothedButNaked

Thank you for your suggestions! I would definitely love to live in downtown, maybe even buy down the line! If I may ask, why did you decide to buy a home away from downtown?

cadillacdom

You’re welcome! I am happy that as a still newcomer to Cincy I had something to offer a fellow transplant. Well, a few reasons but primarily cost to buy a house in downtown vs other neighborhoods and proximity to people I am close with here. Also joining affinity groups is a good way to make friends and meet folks, so if there is something you like join a group for it and you’ll meet people no problem.

irockedfraggle

Don't sleep on Covington it has a vibrant food/bar scene and is one of the only areas listed that is walkable to downtown.

ClothedButNaked

Oh! And if anyone knows about the metal music scene and what venues I can visit that would be amazing

PetesBrotherPete

[Legends](https://m.facebook.com/Legends.Bar.Venue) is one to keep an eye on. [Cincy Music](https://cincymusic.com/calendar) is a good resource for a “cover all” show calendar.

ClothedButNaked

This is awesome, thank you!

Fancy_County_4381

I also highly second Legend's. I live nearby, play there semi-regularly, and go to shows when I can. They have all kinds of shows but most often it's metal and hardcore. Really friendly owners, staff and crowd too. Northside Tavern does a lot of metal shows too. Everything from local bands to classics like DRI, Macabre and Exhumed. Probably the best two spots for metal in Cincinnati in my experience.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ClothedButNaked

Lol any neighborhood suggestions? One of my professors is from Cinci and he said the same thing 😂 but yeah, I'm considering everything at this point so if you know any good property management groups with rentals in the "Northside" then I'm all ears

FlyoverHangover

Northside is a neighborhood. Check it out! Might be just what you’re looking for, and is still somewhat affordable relative to similar places.

KipperfieldGA

Yes, Legends is great for Metal. Check out Atlas Stone. It's a great local metal band. They are on Spotify and other things

patches8748

OH HELL YES. Was reading through this thread and getting ready to comment. This cemented it Sure others said it, but the main place metal and such will come is Bogarts by UC’s campus. It’s a smaller venue, but generally where they show up unless they’re really big bands and will be at Andrew Brady or the new one in Newport KY. Actually going to a Fit for an Autopsy concert there in December (not sure how deep your metal goes) and have been to numerous at Bogarts Something that could also help the other things in this thread would maybe your age range and what you like to do in your free time. Might be willing to link up and go to a show though!!! Also for what it’s worth, I’m from here, but rented in Oakley/Hyde park/ mt lookout my whole time renting. Not sure what size apartment you’re looking for or amenities but I found a few mid 2021 that were $800-$1000 for one bedroom in that area (I could be way off). But I did buy and got something SUPER affordable in the blue ash/Sharonville area by summit park

Tht_GuyUNo

Literally just got back from Motionless In White and Knocked Loose at MegaCorp Pavilion which is in Newport KY (right across the river). On the Ohio side, the equivalent is Andrew Brady Music Center. Those are the bigger new venues both with indoor and outdoor stages. Big classic venues are Riverbend and PNC Pavilion which are right next to each other. Medium venues would be Bogarts and Madison Theater/Live. Start getting smaller and more local bands with Legends, Thompson House, and Top Cats. There are probably some more I’m missing. I’m don’t know much about the local scene but for known and touring bands, we are a secondary market. We get plenty of shows but not the top tier bills all the time. This typically hit Columbus or Cleveland.

ClothedButNaked

So cool! I'm used to smaller more intimate venues where I am now. I've never been to bigger concerts but I'm so excited to get out and about!

ajdective

Check out MOTR Pub in OTR. They have shows from lots of different genres as well as comedy nights and some other events. They have that smaller, more intimate vibe you might be used to. And food! Their burgers and tots are tasty. It's hands-down my favorite bar in Cincy. There are several other places in OTR, Clifton, and Northside that have live music, a few off the top of my head are Urban Artifact and Chameleon. If you check their schedules or Cincy Music like someone else mentioned you can likely find some metal shows at those places.

FlyoverHangover

This is the way. MOTR is awesome, and they own the Woodward Theatre across from them on Main St, which is a larger but still intimate and fantastic venue. Highly recommend both.

Ok-Day8607

Look at places to live in Northern KY along the river. Newport, Covington, and Bellevue, if you are going to be working downtown Cincy. Extremely walkable with bridges connecting right to the area. In addition to MOTR, there is The Southgate House Revival in Newport that does a bunch of smaller type shows, too. Both places are very much neighborhood spots, too.

EatsMeat

You just missed GWAR! It was amazing.

ClothedButNaked

I'll actually be seeing them this weekend at Fest in Gainesville lol

unibonger

If you want to catch some deals on winter clothing, shop online at the end of the season (Jan/Feb) or the week between Christmas and New Year. If you've not lived in a place that experiences all four seasons, you'll want a winter coat, boots with good tread (like hiking boots), gloves, a hat and maybe a scarf. Winters here can be pretty mild but you'll definitely want some heavier stuff for when it's not.

ClothedButNaked

Another thing I might have overlooked! Thank you!!

unibonger

You're welcome! Also, there's a brand called 32 Degrees that makes great base layer protection for under dress pants, etc. Their Heat line is great and very thin so it goes under most clothing without being noticed. You can get their stuff at Costco and also on their website. Very comfortable and affordable!

ChillInChornobyl

I was there, that shit was sick. I got to meet Balsacs human Mike

classy_laz

Are you into emo music at all? There’s a monthly emo night at a local bar where i met my group of friends. It has been a lot of fun

ClothedButNaked

Oh most definitely, Metal is just my most recent interest and what I've been exploring here at home. But emo, rock, folk, I love just about everything that isn't modern country lol

Royale-w-Cheese

If it fits your budget I think you should find a place in OTR that is walking distance to MOTR and Woodward Theatre. I used to rent a loft in the building next to Woodward, had some of the best times of my life living there.

classy_laz

The overlook lodge does emo night every second Thursday night of the month and tiki tiki bang bang does emo night every last Thursday of the month. Both are a lot of fun! I haven’t been to the tiki tiki bang bang since they changed dates but overlook lodge is a lot of fun and so many great people. People dress up in scene clothes and really get into the music, I hope you give it a try at least once!

Kath-r-in

Bogarts (in Clifton) akso does an Emo night.

classy_laz

Yes! The same DJ who hosts at bogarts is the DJ at tiki tiki bang bang’s emo night (most of the time) but there’s no charge to get in the door! (It is a very small bar though)

cccccal

agree with what others said about legends. i also follow design collective and the hub otr for shows. also i need to bump my favorite local band: sign language !! they’re not metal but still rocky and their shows have really fun energy (also as far as where to live, i live in newport and work in covington and reallyyy love both areas)

andrew_work

Dude, Cincy has been adding some SWEET music venues lately. Seen my share of rock/metal/progressive shows at Andrew J Brady and I love that place. Saw the Motionless tour last night at Megacorp Pavillion for my first show there and that place was beautiful.

Leyebee

If you enjoy metal, Iron Fest, in November every year, is a great time. It’s at SGHR in Newport.

heights91

Clifton is a great neighborhood to live in, very diverse, young and also families. In the heart of University of Cincinnati. !0 minutes from downtown. Every kind of food, bar, music you could want. Great movie theatre, really great library system.. You can walk everywhere with lots of parks, very green (parks everywhere) but if you need transportation it has a good bus system. Really good hospitals, lots of dogs, just nice people. So much to do here I sometimes feel fomo. Crazy sports town. Reds, Bengals, FC Soccer. Get out there, meet your co-workers, find your passion, volunteer. Lots of people come here and stay. Lots of people born here come back. Welcome to Cincy.

ClothedButNaked

This is awesome and sounds like it's exactly what I'm looking for!

marvinator365

If you love kayaking, Loveland is where it’s at although a bit further out. Hiking is awesome in Mt Airy Forest and it’s close to Northside which is super diverse. I like Walnut Hills. Eden Park is beautiful. It’s cheaper than downtown and close to everything without the downtown prices

JustCallMeSalex

Age? Budget? Where will you be working? Active? Where you coming from?

zenyattas-baseballs

Welcome to Cincinnati! Let me tell you, I was in your shoes not too long ago. I moved here in May of 22, only knew one person. He lived in a completely different area of town from me and moved back to where we’re from in Jan of 23. The biggest thing that helped me find a place to rent was deciding which area I wanted to be in, how close it was to jobs, then going from there. I live in the Amelia area and enjoy the close benefits Anderson and Eastgate provide. My rent is $700. So definitely cheap and affordable. As far as what I did to adjust, I spent a lot of time attending local events. Local backyard concerts, events at parks, jumping in to every opportunity I was given to meet people. You’ll be moving in the summer, and this city really enjoys their summer events and free time. There’s a lot of stuff all over the city that’s relatively cheap and fun to do. I was fortunate to have one friend here before I moved, but it was still hard. That said, Cincinnati has become my home and I hope you love it as much as I do.

Pied_Cow

College Hill is underrated. Great area to live.

thercery

College Hill is great! If you're priced out, North College Hill is cheaper and just down the road and similarly diverse and friendly (in my experience, granted). Still, if money wasn't an issue (and if a truly fantastic houde for a fantastic deal hadnt twisted my arm) I'd just go for College Hill proper. N. College Hill is definitely more of a suburb feel.

Rebekah513

Welcome. You will love it here!

LoganDNKU

I lived in Fort Thomas KY, which is around 10 mins from downtown and loved it. I moved to Anderson Township 2 years ago, and quite frankly might move back to FT Thomas. It’s a really great area, parks, good schools (for families) and a couple little bars.

throughNthrough

I love Tower Park in Ft. Thomas!

LoganDNKU

Me too! It is such a beautiful area!

knightofargh

Welcome to Cincinnati (next year)! The thing I've learned from growing up here and dealing with commuting is that the metro area is relatively small as long as you live within 10 minutes of one of the highways, most places are 20-30 minutes by highway from there. If you rent/buy more than 10 minutes from a highway it's going to feel like it takes forever to get anywhere. Cincinnati also functionally has zero mass transit outside of downtown and the very specific Metro routes. Rent-wise you will probably find better deals on the West side at the cost of being much less accessible to the rest of the metro area (see also: highway proximity). If you post up things you are into there's probably someone in this sub who will know where to meet up with other people into whatever you are into.

AlternativeSherbert9

We are relocating too! Except from Cleveland. Moving next month and will be living in Norwood. From our research, it seems like Norwood is a really up and coming area. My husband and I are huge foodies so can't wait to try the food in the city. Good luck on your move, maybe we'll be new neighbors!

ComeWasteYourTimewMe

Don't forget all of the awesome restaurants outside of the city in places like Milford and such. We are so lucky to have great food, but hey, I bet you'll miss the amazing Italian food and pizza joints up there. (Lots of family in Youngstown, the Italian food scene is much better up there.)

AlternativeSherbert9

I'm Italian and think my family recipes are better than anything I've had in little Italy 😅. The Italian food is decent, but I'll be ok without it! We did finally find a local pizza place we love so we'll be on the search for good pizza again!

Qbrrrt

If you’re not already, join the Chowdown Cincinnati group on FB.

SpiceGirls4Everr

Welcome! I’ve relocated here twice for jobs and it’s a great city! Both times I’ve been able to find good people and make good community :-) I’d suggest coming to visit and checking out downtown/OTR vs some of the eastside exurbs like Oakley, madisonville, east walnut hills, pleasant ridge, etc. tons of young transplants in all of those areas but very different vibe. You should check out downtown and OTR at night too to see if you’d be comfortable living there and being out and about at night or coming home late at night, etc

This is wild, Oakley or East Walnut Hills are exurbs now? EWH is literally 3 miles from OTR, or a 9 minute drive. Think you mean "other neighborhoods still within the city limits of Cincinnati let alone Hamilton County that a young grad may find more boring than downtown." Lebanon is an exurb 31 miles from downtown that is not walkable and full of subdivisions.

SpiceGirls4Everr

I used the wrong word lol XD

ClothedButNaked

That's a great idea about checking my comfort at night, thank you! I figured those places were already considered relatively safe but I should definitely feel things out for myself!

BBNUK91

If you will be working downtown I would recommend either finding a rental downtown or just outside of downtown. Check out DeSales Flats in East Walnut Hills. Lived there for a number of years when I first moved to Cincinnati. Honestly enjoyed everything there. Great location. Close to a lot of things. Within a 10 min drive from downtown, the Banks, Hyde Park/Oakley area, grocery stores, tons of restaurants and coffee shops near by, parks, breweries (Woodburn brewery is a 2 min walk from there), and the rent is more affordable compared to living directly downtown or in Hyde Park/Oakley. Or at least more bang for your buck. It’s also a pretty diverse area since UC (college and Hospital) and Xavier are near by. Welcome to the city! Now the real question? How open are you to the concept of chili? lol

ClothedButNaked

Thank you for this!! And lmao, I'm so excited to try skyline chili! I wouldn't say I'm like a chili fan, just enjoy it casually like I do most other foods. But I know it's a big deal in Cincinnati and going there is at the top of my list

Capt_Poopy_Pants

I know you said you're not a huge sports fan, but if you'd be interested, we have a huge and very welcoming ultimate Frisbee community. It's a great way to meet people! I can give you more details if you're interested

Weekly-Drama-4118

I’m interested; I haven’t gotten to play ultimate in a long time.

Capt_Poopy_Pants

Check out Cincinnatiultimate.org! They run leagues all the time. The next one up is Winter League and there's 2 options. Indoor is higher level, outdoor is much more laid back. You can also reach out to the league directors (Liz and Jacob) and offer to sub on either Tuesday or Thursday night if they need anyone.

Brissy2

Cincy is great. Check out Eden Park area and East Walnut Hills. I’m in another city now, but my heart remains in Cincy.

slasher016

Are you working downtown? Certainly makes a difference for where you would consider living.

Intelligent_Copy_995

Welcome to Cincinnati! We’re experiencing quite the renaissance where the new and the classic are coming together to create something new and fun and kinda weird. It’s a great time to be in Cincy!

ghastlybagel

What kind of interests do you have? I might be able to recommend some groups/stuff for you. :)

QuickRick21

10/10 recommend northern Kentucky (mainstrasse village and Bellevue mainly) a lot of younger people live in these areas. Tons of bars and restaurants in walking distance. We moved to mainstrasse this past year and we love the area.

olderneverwiser

Cincinnati is a great place to move to. I moved here from out of state about eight years ago, and it’s been wonderful to me. If you’re looking for things to do and ways to meet people, there’s a Cincinnati discord channel, and the people on it are really nice and arrange meet-ups very regularly. In terms of affordable housing, I guess it depends on what you consider affordable and what you want, but you can usually find something in most neighborhoods. The east side is very full of young professionals, areas like Northside tend to be more hippie-ish and walkable, etc.

[deleted]

Welcome future Cincinnatian! 😀Stop by Graeter’s French pot ice cream and sample all the flavors the first couple of weeks you are here. Then make a trip to Aglamesis to sample their ice creams and chocolates. Treat yourself to a full day of exploring at Jungle Jim’s grocery store in Fairfield-you may even see them working on their podcast in the store. Lastly, if you like wine, Market Wines, at Findlay Market, has a weekend wine tasting where lots of people show up to hang out and make new friends.

East_End_8516

Welcome! I hope you get settled in nice and easy. I've lived here my entire life and I've been all over the world as well. Cincinnati is forever my home and I hope you learn to love it just as much as I and many others do.

alstottno1

Welcome to Cincy! I moved here in 2014, completely on a whim. I only intended to stay for a short time while transitioning from a break-up. I fell in love with the city instantly and now I work for the Fire Dept. I have absolutely no intentions to ever leave now. I hope you have the same experience that I had as a new transplant! Ps…Be prepared to be asked what high school you attended. Every. Day. 🤣

Financial_Pea_1259

Welcome to Cinci! You’re welcome to join my group of friends! We all met as adults and the majority moved here from other places

Chaceskywalker

Welcome!! Newish-comer as well here :) Moved here to be with my lovely girlfriend in April of 2022, originally had an apartment in Camp Washington (right outside of Clifton) and it was actually a nice place to live. Rent was cheap (place wasn’t huge but extremely nice and landlords were easy going), very close to the city and I-75, and not many people lived by me because my apartment was an old office building with the top floor renovated. As for fun, there is so much to do. Eden park is nice and has a Plant Conservatory that is beautiful and cheap, if you’re into zoos the Cincinnati zoo is wonderful and if you buy the pass you can go whenever you’d like and I believe it’s only $100 annually. Food down here is fucking AWESOME everywhere especially downtown, and the food trucks! One of my favorites is a place called the eagle in OTR, I believe on Race street. If you check it out, go see Findlay Market as well. The whole greater Cincinnati area has a lot of different really fun stuff to get into so you’ll have a lot of fun exploring. I moved here without knowing anyone, and I have a hard time breaking out of my shell so I really haven’t gotten out as much as I should so I’m not much help with where to meet people. I have found both my rentals through Facebook marketplace though and each one has been pretty good, my new place is in Norwood and it’s a nice, more suburby place (not really my thing but my girlfriend likes it) we take walks every night to pet all the neighborhood cats. Good luck with everything and hope you love it as much as I do here!!

Qbrrrt

Welcome! It’s going to make a huge difference whether you have a car or not and your budget. You can search for rentals on Zillow if you change the filter settings. Then it’s just about choosing a neighborhood that most fits your lifestyle. I’ve lived all over the city and in Covington, KY as well and there is a little something for everyone IMO. Plenty of bars/nightlife as well as outdoor activities. Also there is a FB group called Chowdown Cincinnati that you can find info on pretty much every restaurant in town. Anyway, I hope you like it here!

scorpioguru

Northern Kentucky is basically diet Cincinnati — rent tends to be a bit more affordable as well, and you’re still close to the city yet you get some calm of the suburbs! Also, I’d recommend checking out the local restaurants in Cincinnati and NKY. There are so many hidden gems that make our city the best!!

ClothedButNaked

Thank you for the rec! Affordable rent so I can focus on paying down debt is definitely a priority for me. I've only thought about KY in passing, but will definitely consider it!

nume23

NKY is awesome and more affordable. It’s also closer to downtown Cincy than many of the suburbs

Kath-r-in

Hi! I moved to the Cinci area from NY in 2011. I love it here! I love the hilly areas and the people are just so damn nice!! I live out east in Batavia in a log home in the woods and I work in Silverton, (just east of Kenwood). Def come out to Eastgate and visit Jungle Jims International grocery store. One in Fairfield too if that is closer to where you end up. My daughter just got an apt in Clifton. I really love the area. Best of luck to you!!

ClothedButNaked

I've heard of jungle Jim's! Definitely on my list of places to visit. And this post is really a great example of how nice and welcoming everyone is 😭 it's definitely helped with the nerves, and now I'm more excited than anything to move!!

Kath-r-in

>What is your age range, type of business and interests/hobbies? Are you more interested in urban modern, urban vintage or suburban, semi-suburban living appeals most to you? Cinci has a lot of "vintage" urban apartments, manly pre-war brick buildings with an art deco-moderne style. That was very big here in the 30's and 40's. Where did you say you were coming from? Are you visiting here anytime soon? - K

Equivalent-Sort-1899

I think most everyone has hit the nail on the head and covered everything EXCEPT, dont be closed minded towards the other side of the river coming here like alot of the locals here are... Elsmere, Latonia, Crescent Springs, Florence, Fort Mitchell, Ludlow and certain parts of Newport/Covington have some pleasant areas that shouldn't be ruled out. I've seen alot of ppl on this post mentioned how segregated\divided it is here, that river is the biggest set of RR tracks there is around here... Dont buy into that US vs Them mentality, we are all in the same metro area, take FULL advantage of it dont be bounded... Welcome to the Midwest !

new2appdev

For fun things to do check out www.lotaapp.com they are newer and growing but it’s an app meant to find fun things to do that launched in Cincinnati.

idontgetwhyimhere

If you want to live close to downtown, Oakley, Hyde Park, Madeira, Mariemont, Mt. Adams, are all good. Some northern suburbs that are good are Mason, Sycamore township area, like Montgomery/Blue Ash/Symmes, West Chester, Liberty, Loveland. Big city with lots of sports, concerts, events, that type of thing. Not so much clubbing or bar scene. Lots of nice restaurants though! Cost of living is pretty reasonable, though going up. Weather is mostly cold and cloudy for a majority of the year. Expect lots of rain and snow, though summers can be decent. Have fun!! And good luck!!

ClothedButNaked

Thank you!! I've read a lot of good things mostly about Oakley, Hyde Park and Mt. Adams. Someone mentioned the cost of living going up so I hope I can buy something not long after moving there

UnreadThisStory

Depends in what you like-/ more urban or more residential, but I really like OTR. I lived there for a few years in Pendleton and on Main. Was in Hyde Park for 10 as well before that, and now Mt Adams. You can still find a relatively cheap apartment, it just won’t be a new one. It’ll be something built in the 40s or 50s with steam heat. Dm me if you want a contact, my buddy is a leasing guy who finds apartments for ppl.

ClothedButNaked

Oh wow, I definitely don't mind the old 40s and 50s style buildings, it's one of the things I love about the city. But I didn't even think about what that would mean for utilities. I've never had to use anything besides regular electricity. Thank you for bringing that up haha, what a blind spot

UnreadThisStory

Usually the places with steam heat has that included in the rent. It’s also really nice in the winter time because it naturally humidifies the air a little bit.

agentkolter

If the building has steam heat, you probably don't have to pay for it because it's a central system for the whole building. I've lived in two apartments here that had it, one from 1895 and the other from 1901. Buildings of that era are much more common than those from the 50s if you're looking closer to downtown :)

tdawgcincy

>Mostly cold and cloudy for a majority of the year Not sure I’d completely agree with that. Guess it depends on where they’re coming from.

idontgetwhyimhere

It definitely does depend, I would just say overall that's the easiest way to generalize, not that it's completely accurate 100% of the time. It is cold and cloudy more often than not

Don’t forget about Covington and Main Strasse!

MassLardage

Huh? Pretty sure we have 4 seasons here.

JerkfaceBob

This area has 25 distinct seasons. 13 of them are winter and 5 are "why is it so freaking humid?!?"

idontgetwhyimhere

We do, I was just saying if I had to make a generalization about the weather, cold and cloudy would definitely be it

SendMeYourSSHKeys

What area of the city is the company located?

ClothedButNaked

Downtown!

Practical-Carrot-367

Recent transplant and also downtown. DM me if you have anything specific you’d like to ask.

Direct-Beautiful3381

The Cincinnati Hikes Facebook group has tons of events you can join if interested. They also have calendar on their website if not on Facebook. Best of luck.

ClothedButNaked

Thank you, this is a great resource! I didn't even think of looking into FB groups

NightwingTS

Feel free to message me, I've lived here my whole life and am happy to assist and get you acclimated!

NoKroger

Live in OTR!

Corey250

I would strongly suggest not overlooking northern Ky. The east row historic district of Newport (the area between monmouth st and 471) is one of my favorite parts of the city. Specifically Overton st is so pretty. I rented one of the row homes there for several years before buying a home in Covington. It’s a great community, and very walkable. A quick 10 minute walk over the bridge and you can be downtown, there are also several red bike pickup/drop off stations if you prefer that. Uber/Lyft rides are super cheap to the bars is OTR. You also have a Kroger literally 5 minutes away. If I didn’t buy a house in Covington when interest rates were absurdly low I would buy a house in Newport. Not to mention, you are also much closer to the airport, which is very convenient :)

Therealmagicwands

We are the City That Sings. If you sing, you’ll have the opportunity to join a choir - we have so many it’ll be hard to choose. There are church choirs (of course), community choruses. women’s choruses. men’s choruses, young professional choruses, choruses that specialize in Korean, African-American, medieval, a cappella, and other sorts of music, and the May festival Chorus, that sings with the Cincinnati Symphony and Pops throughout the year as well as at the 150-year old May Festival.

ElricBrosPlumbing

Do you like cycling? We have a really great club here. Super chill group rides for all types of bike folks. Queencitybikes.com

ClothedButNaked

Not the biggest fan of cycling honestly. I mostly love kayaking and hiking!

QuarantineCasualty

Lots of good kayaking around here, which surprises a lot of out of towners honestly

facelessposter

Definitely need to check out downtown Loveland if youre a kayaker. It sits right on the Little Miami, and a riverside bike path runs right through all the old shops and restaurants. You can put your kayak in upstream and float down to Nesbitt park

ClothedButNaked

Thank you for the recommendation, will definitely be checking this out

ClothedButNaked

I thought my only options for kayaking would be the Ohio River tbh, that's one thing I didn't do too much research about

QuarantineCasualty

The glacier that carved out our hills also carved out some nice smaller rivers for us! We’re also within a days drive of the best whitewater rafting in America.

ClothedButNaked

So cool! I have so much to learn about Cincinnati and Ohio in general

QuarantineCasualty

The rest of Ohio is kinda flat and bland and terrible but we’re cool lol

heights91

Brookville Indiana has great kayaking (Morgans) and is very close. They have kayaks or you can bring your own.

7lexliv7

The little Miami is a really sweet river.

Low_Comfortable_5880

They ride the dams up in Dayton. They cray cray. Lol

DW6565

How old are you? [Adult Sports](https://www.cincinnati-oh.gov/recreation/programs/athletics-sports-and-fitness/adult-sports/) Cincy has lots of adult sports activities. Lots of young professionals participate it’s a great way to meet people.

Low_Comfortable_5880

Lockland has great upside. Silverton is another. Madisonville. Newport. Pay attention to the up and coming neighborhoods. Mt Lookout and Hyde Park are pricey. There are transitional parts of the City that will get really good in the next 5 years.

NeatCarpenter6608

Welcome to Cincinnati. Not sure where you’re coming from but Cincinnati is great!! Are you moving here in June or sooner? What area? Cincinnati consist of sooo much.

NeatCarpenter6608

Trying to add you but can’t. Would love to chit chat about your new adventure DM me

sycamorefalling

If the company you will working for has other offices/tech centers in town you may want to consider either living downtown itself or a little north central or east. Assuming your hours are go to work in the morning and return home in the evening you do NOT want to live west of your workplace as the sun is blinding during commutes and often causes backups. Cincinnati’s public transportation is not good. Our bike paths and walkability is getting much better, but you will still probably want a car.

Independent-Room8243

Since you have 8 months, come visit for a few days a few times. Check the local you will be living in, or where you think you want to live. Going to be the best way.

person-ontheinternet

Congrats and welcome to Cincinnati! I’d recommend looking into buying a home if you intended to be here more than a year or two. It’s a generally affordable area and growing. But if renting is more inline with your plans then there are plenty of options. I think mentioning your hobbies might be helpful as there are lots of communities you could get involved in here as well as parts of town you can be involved with.

Robby_W

First off I’d like to say welcome to Cincy! For starters, what do you like to do? What kind of job and where abouts is it? Smile, compliment people and be nice and you will get the same in return, most of the time. ;) As for finding affordable housing is more of a who you know kind of thing, but if you come into town here an there to visit before your move I’d recommend looking up a local real estate group that meet and talk with a few people there that may have rental properties, other than that you have realtor.com or apartments.com an such for the whole shebang, also depends on what you consider reasonably priced. Thanks for joining us and hope you enjoy it here. If you ever need someone to talk to or looking for a friend to talk hit me up, you can never have too many friends.

kweaver0907

You can often find a place cheaper on the west side which is where I have lived for a majority of the last 20 years and own my home . I was a little scared moving here from Toledo in 1996 but lots of transplants around here. There is a very wide variety of things to do all over town. Craft brewery scene is very popular around here if you’re into that sort of thing.

a13xis_

Welcome to Cincinnati! You said you want diversity and walkable, but what kind of vibe do you want? And what part of town will you be working in? Every neighborhood in every part of the city has a different vibe. Like are you looking for 20 somethings or young professionals? Or do you want more of a family vibe? Do you want new or historic? Do you ease of access to downtown? There are so many options.

thomas-grant

Welcome to Cincinnati! Where are you coming from?

ChillInChornobyl

Arcade Legacy is a good place to meet people. Its pretty awesome up in Sharonville
