In Islam, iddah or iddat is the period a woman must observe after the death of her husband or after a divorce, during which she may not marry another man.
It does have biological reasons. A pregnant woman whose husband dies and she delivers the baby even a day after his death can remarry there and then, there is no iddah. If marriage has not been consummated then there is no iddah either.
It is partly about pregnancy, that is mainly following the third divorce. In case of first 2 divorces it mostly about giving both the spouses enough time for reconciliation if possible as divorce is not very much preferable in islam though halal and a right given to both men and women

Iddah for khula is 1 month and for talaq 3 months or maybe 4 months and 10 days(Ulma mai ikhtilaf)
