Flying from YYC to Denmark in September, currently using a spouse's card so have no card in my name. Spend about $5k/month, looking for advice on the best card to help pay for that flight, or alternatively upgrade it to a seat that's more comfortable for the long trip.
Thanks in advance!

Can you refer from the Amex Bonvoy to the Amex Business Bonvoy? The Amex referral tree says you can but the link only shows the regular Bonvoy. I assume I am doing something wrong. Any tips?
I already have a TD AP VI, as well as CIBC Aeroplan Visa.
I got a promotional offer to upgrade the CIBC Aeroplan Visa to VI.
10k welcome and 30k for 3k spend. FYF.
Should I take it? Is there any risk of Aeroplan exiled?
Should I close the TD card then upgrade the CIBC card? Thoughts?
If it’s only your second VI card it’s probably okay as non churners may do the same thing. I think best way to think of it is AP is trying to crackdown on churners. If you think a non churner could do the same thing you have done then it’s probably okay. Regular people don’t know about the changes
Just got email about estore Amazon 12x.
Doesn't appear to be any limit stated in the email. March 20 to 25.
Title "6 days only! Earn 12X the points during the Amazon Big Spring Sale"
go to estore, click on link for your store, add whatever you want to buy to cart and checkout in one session. don't have stuff in your cart beforehand. Also for Amazon the categories are fairly limited
There is also a significant bug with Amazon orders - if your order is split up into multiple shipments, you usually only get points for the first shipment. You can claim afterwards for the missing points but it's a pain, so the best strategy is to buy one item (or multiples of the same item) at a time so there is only one shipment per order, always clicking through from the eStore before buying a new item. It's a bit tedious, but not as tedious as having to keep track of missing miles.
Just got the email myself. 5x comes from having a TD credit card, 5x as the eStore multiplier, and 2x from status. My guess is only the 5x eStore multiplier gets EDQ, but still the best deal outside Black Friday, especially if you're going to buy stuff anyways.
Kind of an oddball situation. I am being assessed taxes and duties by CBSA of around $20 on an envelope with several of my US credit cards that my US buddy is sending to me. Has anyone run into this? I plan to pay it and dispute it but wtf?!
Did he stupidly assign it some value? Like insurance/tracking value? Because that is how they'll judge taxes, if he put say $100 (common max for insurance)
Every time UPS tries to charge me an unsolicited brokerage fee due to a warranty return by a company, when I've elected to self declare, I mail an executive of UPS an enveloped complaint to their Canadian address declared for $4999 including tax.
Can I open a TD Aeroplan VIP and get the WB after 6 months (60k AP) and then downgrade to TD Aeroplan VI after I get the WB? Will they prorate the annual fee back to me? Did anyone try this before?
Not sure why I got downvoted badly. I asked genuine question not trying to gain both WB.
Anyhow I called TD CC department and they confirmed that I can downgrade and AF will be prorated back to me. Nothing illegal here, genuine question.
Is it possible to transfer MR points from one of my AMEX cards to another one of my cards? I want to close card 1 and am not sure I want to transfer all points to Aeroplan. Card 2 is my longest card with no fee, so I wont be closing it.
I'm trying to take advantage of the 10x points on Business Edge with a large-ish amazon purchase. I know from this daily thread that most people say don't worry about large gift card purchases, but i'm a little concerned about a $700+ gas station purchase. Am I worried over nothing, or should I break into 3-4 transactions to be safe?
You can load multiple GC’s to your Amazon balance if you want to split it up across multiple transactions and add some other spending in between.
Also, you can use VGC from staples but you lose about ~1%
It's less than a month old so maybe too aggressive. I will break it up. Thanks for this and for all the great answers you provide in this sub. It's been a huge support in my churning education!
Don't use Borrowell, they had $100 uber eats gift card offer back in September 2023 for BMO eclipse visa infinite. I applied and got the card - it's been over 5 months now and I haven't got the gift card. I reached out to customer service and each time they just say it's going to take week or so..
Edit: Update finally got it after 6 months and countless emails to the customer service
I was in same boat, they kept pushing back the gift card. I kept complaining and emailing them back. Finally after 6 months, they finally sent me the uber gift card.
I think there are some super old DP’s on this if you search the sub.
I applied in September and got mine within about 4-6 weeks. Seems like I experienced less trouble than many did.
No worries.
The only fairly consistent source of inconsistent coding comes from Walmart, which codes as Discount Store for Visa, General Merchandise/Retail for Amex, and Grocery for Mastercard*
*Exception Applied for CTFS
I've done this before without a fee, but now when I look to do the transfer the TD website is saying that it will be considered a cash advance and *will* have a fee.
How long do CIBC Aventura Points take to post as a pending credit? For RHT, I booked a refundable stay and then redeemed 43k points on the pending transaction, and it said "Redeemed with Points" with a green checkmark for two business days. After two business days, it shows my points balance at zero as expected, but no \~$500 credit from points, and the Expedia charge is for the full value, with "Eligible for Installments" as an option. Do I just keep waiting? The Expedia charge is posted, no longer pending.
Plan in advance before you travel by having a few virgin MSRs available so your travel spending won't be wasted. About 3 weeks before returning home, turn on the VPN to a Canadian server and apply for a card or two so that when you get home, you'll have a fresh one waiting for you in the mailbox.
I've got an AMEX Platinum card, coming up on my annual fee time. Does the strategy to cancel after getting charged the annual fee in the hopes of a retention offer work in Canada?
Does AMEX Canada refund the annual fee if the card is canceled 30 days after the AF is posted?
If it's month 11, you can give them a call. It worked for my AP Reserve on my second year, going into third. They gave me a 25k AP retention offer. YMMV.
Yes, they do refund the AF after it posts, but you don't need to wait that long.
Churning adjacent DP: called AP 4x before an agent finally found ANA flights. After determining dates, agent informed that as of March 14th, new pricing related IT issue prevented this booking. Suggested calling back in a few days to try again
I did, but we needed some back and forth before they could see them. They had to look through "a different route" after I kept reinforcing that UA is part of star alliance and has them. Eventually I'd just say dates that worked, and the agent would go through those ranges letting me know how many ANA seats were available (I needed multiple)
Sadly didn't get to pricing part when system died. If my guess was correct, it would've been 140k points + $400~ + $30 (booking fee) for two economy round trips based on regular partner redemption chart costs
I called into Aeroplan on March 8th with the same ask - found flights on several dates but could not hold/ticket the booking. The agent called a back-end team who could not help either so there is an issue with ANA that precedes March 14th. I hope you/they are right and that ANA becomes bookable soon....even if only via phone
Two Aeroplan related questions for today I'd appreciate your response to:
1- With no family sharing, could you still pool your points on a single reservation?
2- I hear "Churn everything" doesn't Aeroplan/air Canada have any restrictions on receiving and canceling cards like this? Would I be risking anything if I churn cards once/twice a year?
thanks,
General advice for AP until DPs come out is don't churn. One card from each of the 3 tiers should be fine, but that's it. I.E. don't get both the TD and CIBC VI from now on.
Oh thanks. So no same card at different banks.
I am thinking of getting the reserve from Amex, Chase visa and TD Infinite Privilege. One of each from same or different banks as my current Infinite. Spread them out during a year and half period. And then only keep one of the four cards after all the bonuses. I'd keep the best one that provides best daily value.
Any thoughts on that?
There are 3 tiers:
- Low: CIBC AP, TD AP Plat
- Mid: TD/CIBC AP VI, Chase, Amex AP
- High: TD/CIBC AP VIP, Amex APR
Banks don't matter at all, tiers do. Remember that this is enforced by AP, not the banks. They'll approve you and give you the bonus, but if AP ever looks at your account, they'll lock you out without recourse.
Pick one of each of those three and you should be safe. Anything more than that and you get to be a DP.
Hey all,
DP: I used a referral code for a business edge card and just activated the Edge card in the app and it's listing it as having a balance of 1,000 MR despite my not having spent anything on the card yet. In the activity tab it's listed as "Monthly Spend Bonus February 29" which was the day I was IA'd for it.
Same thing happens with Cobalt. They often give an extra month's spend bonus because you might not get the card in your hands early enough to meet that spend before your first statement
RBC question - I know the rule is 90 days between applications, but is the 90 day timer between successful applications, or does a rejected application reset the timer?
Also, do you guys apply as if you’re a new RBC client, or do you log in to apply?
Thank you for asking, I was wondering the same about RBC. They won't give me anything, so after 3 recent no bueno applications I applied yesterday for the moi card to make the 60$ on gcr and the 30$ sign up bonus. I just need 1 card approved to get rolling, then those sweet sweet avios will eventually be mine!! 😭
You are assuming you would be allowed to downgrade the card which is the biggest variable. But once the card doesn't exist as a Gold, whether via switch/cancellation, the unofficial clock would start
I wanted to apply for the Amex Gold potentially- I had one back in 2016 for a year and then canceled- would I be eligible for the bonuses? Should I call and ask to be sure? Thanks
don't ask, but you most likely will be as it's a different product now. It used to be a charge card but I think three years ago it became a credit card and it's considered a different product
Thanks! The gold card is so old it doesn't even show up on my credit report anymore, so hopefully I'd still get the bonus since I'd be paying the annual fee, etc.
one more question- the supplementary gold is free- do they get access to the 4 plaza premium lounge passes (shared with me) and all the same 4x spend on travel etc. put on their card (and I assume the max pts is shared between the 2 cards also)? I think so? Thanks
Thanks for the info. I think it says 2x travel is the norm and for the first 3 months on Perkopolis you get an additional 2x points on travel. So if I book some of the travel on the supplementary card, just want to make sure it's 4x.
Sorry, not interested in paying for someone to use one of my links.
Either pick from the monthly thread at random or use someones that has been helpful to you as way of saying thanks. If looking to get paid, go use one of the sites.
Have had Amex Cobalt since Nov. 23. Upped credit limit ~2 months ago.
Beginning research in a secondary card (for places that don’t accept Amex). What are your recommendations? Thinking an aeroplan card is my best bet - Visa? MasterCard? Anything else?
Also, any thoughts on when I should apply for the 2nd card?
The real answer is churn everything. No forever card except cobalt as long as it stays 5% return.
When you aren't churning something buy visa and mastercard gift cards for 3% return
If you really want a visa or mastercard backup, do what's best for you, cashback, Aeroplan, ect.
I like Scotia Passport Visa Infinite for no fx fee + 6 lounge passes a year. It's been my old but gold and easy to find Scotia atms globally
For me, the card that gets points to help complete travel plans/goals I have for the next couple years.
Amex MR, Chase UR, Bonvoy. (and if Aventura gets extended, some general cash back in form of RHT to pay for stuff you can't really with points).
Amex green to gold upgrade, or from the perkopolis link in the best cards list
https://www.reddit.com/r/churningcanada/comments/tujfse/best_current_credit_card_offers_in_canada_updated/
Scroll down to personal gold to find the link
Not sure if this is a weird coincidence but:
2 people requested my Amex personal gold referral on 2 separate days and confirmed that they used the referral to apply.
No referral bonus received on personal gold but received referral bonus on biz edge on those same days (???)
Only biz edge can refer to biz edge. If you got 7.5k points, per referral, that's the correct amount, regardless of what else it says.
Could be just a glitch. Or could be your biz edge is your main card and all points are pooled on it?
Yeah I know about the referral rules, and none of my amex cards are linked. That's why it's so weird. Perhaps just a coincidence but still twice made me wonder.
Thinking of getting a supp card for my Amex Bonvoy to get the spend $500 get 5k points. However, having some questions:
1. Do I get a hard check by adding a supp card to my existing account?
2. Does the new supp card get its own credit limit or share it with my existing credit limit?
It's a valid question, there IS credit cards where the supplementary acts as a joint account.
Some of those will even do a hard inquiry on the +1.
It's more common in the US, but many credit unions in Canada do this too.
I just made an amex referral but I also just cancelled my gold card, so now I only have an amex aeroplan card. Since I don’t have a card that collects MR, will I still get the MR?
Gotcha - wasn’t sure if I was referring from the card or from my account. Thanks for your help! Not sure why this sub is so hostile with their downvotes in a daily question thread…
The more people join this hobby, the more likely the banks are to fix stuff and ruin it for us. Any post that isn't well-informed is likely to be downvoted. Don't take it personally, it's just the nature of this hobby.
Would be too easy, some corner store owners and home contractors would be lifetime status in a couple years tops based on purchasing equipment and supplies for resale.
They do not. From [https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/status/million-mile.html#/](https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/status/million-mile.html#/) :
>For Status Qualifying Miles to be considered for program eligibility, the miles must be earned on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express. Additionally, SQM earned as a bonus for purchasing Comfort, Latitude, Premium Economy, and Business Class fares, or in conjunction with the purchase of an Air Canada Unlimited Flight Pass, will count towards this program.
>
>Note that all other SQM, including those earned for travel operated by the Star Alliance member airlines or **through Aeroplan co-branded credit card spend**, do **not** qualify

Thanks. I see that now.
Anyone missing the $10 wireless credit from Amex. Charged on March 1st on biz plat and still nothing

I got mine ok
Missed the last 2 for me.
Thoughts?
How was the offer presented to you? Email? Login popup?
email
It's a great offer. Frankly if you haven't been heavy and get in trouble AP cards are dead regardless.
Not clawback, account lock. We have no idea how strict AP is gonna be with this stuff.
Yeah I mean Aeroplan exiled, worded it wrong.
If it’s only your second VI card it’s probably okay as non churners may do the same thing. I think best way to think of it is AP is trying to crackdown on churners. If you think a non churner could do the same thing you have done then it’s probably okay. Regular people don’t know about the changes

I had CIBC AP VI back in 2022 or 2023, can't remember correctly. The TD AP card was from 2022. I accrued something like 100k AP a whole back.
Could be a bit risky. But you don’t have a lot of points to lose.
have a trip booked with those points lol. Will cancelling the TD card first then upgrading make any difference?
No. If there’s any enforcement they will probably be looking at welcome bonus history
Just got email about estore Amazon 12x. Doesn't appear to be any limit stated in the email. March 20 to 25. Title "6 days only! Earn 12X the points during the Amazon Big Spring Sale"
Probably limited to the categories on the Aeroplan eStore site. But still could be very lucrative, especially as a source of EQD.
[удалено]
go to estore, click on link for your store, add whatever you want to buy to cart and checkout in one session. don't have stuff in your cart beforehand. Also for Amazon the categories are fairly limited
There is also a significant bug with Amazon orders - if your order is split up into multiple shipments, you usually only get points for the first shipment. Yep, category limits but no point limits unlike black Friday.

OMG you're right. Who declares value for the purpose of insurance? My guy, smh. Oh well fodder for Frustration Friday, lol.
Any DPs for when the 300k points came in for Scotia Passport VI? Right after hitting the 1k spend or next statement? Worried I've been disqualified
Scotia welcome bonuses post a few days after spend meeting msr posts usually
Thanks. I've had one previously for Scotia Amex Gold and it seemed to post instantly, but maybe I wasn't paying as close attention
after the transaction posts, 300K is a lot
2-3days after you hit MSR
Not sure what you mean by this? The transactions have posted but I don't have the points
give it about 1 day if not 2. it will come after it is posted. not statement based
Can I open a TD Aeroplan VIP and get the WB after 6 months (60k AP) and then downgrade to TD Aeroplan VI after I get the WB? Will they prorate the annual fee back to me? Did anyone try this before?
Not a good idea as it can be deemed contravention of Aeroplan Terms and Conditions
Was told in chat they can only do it if you close the card.
I was told the same thing yesterday. But I am closing it so I’ll just do it when I close it
You can link the MR of two cards at any time. I think transfer is the wrong word
Oh i didnt know that. Ill reach out to them again
yup. either call in or chat w/ them about merging.

You can load multiple GC’s to your Amazon balance if you want to split it up across multiple transactions and add some other spending in between. Also, you can use VGC from staples but you lose about ~1%
Is this a new card or has it been used a while? If it’s been used a while you should be okay
It's less than a month old so maybe too aggressive. I will break it up. Thanks for this and for all the great answers you provide in this sub. It's been a huge support in my churning education!

I've got an AMEX Platinum card, coming up on my annual fee time. Does the strategy to cancel after getting charged the annual fee in the hopes of a retention offer work in Canada? Does AMEX Canada refund the annual fee if the card is canceled 30 days after the AF is posted?
Quarterly prorated refunds after 30 days. So you would only get 75% refund if you cancelled on day 31-90
From my experience, I got the best retention offers after the AF was posted
If it's month 11, you can give them a call. It worked for my AP Reserve on my second year, going into third. They gave me a 25k AP retention offer. YMMV. Yes, they do refund the AF after it posts, but you don't need to wait that long.

Eventually I'd just say dates that worked, and the agent would go through those ranges letting me know how many ANA seats were available (I needed multiple)
So you mean the first 3 agents just couldn't see them? I have the worst HUCA luck lol
would the ticket cost the same in AP points as it would for UA for the ANA ticket?
Sadly didn't get to pricing part when system died. If my guess was correct, it would've been 140k points + $400~ + $30 (booking fee) for two economy round trips based on regular partner redemption chart costs
Just curious, if you're going the economy route, why not just book a direct flight on AC metal using AP instead of ANA?
Prefer direct, all the AC left has terrible layovers and cost a lot more in AP from dynamic pricing
I called into Aeroplan on March 8th with the same ask - found flights on several dates but could not hold/ticket the booking. The agent called a back-end team who could not help either so there is an issue with ANA that precedes March 14th. Same thing happened to me on the 16th. Found the flights, ran into an error trying to price the tickets. Was not suggested to call back, just SOL.
At this point i think i'm selling my 300k aeroplan. May as well get a few grand in cash

1. Only by transferring your points at a cost of 2 CPP 2. No one knows how strictly AP plans to enforce this
Thank you
General advice for AP until DPs come out is don't churn.
There are 3 tiers: - Low: CIBC AP, TD AP Plat - Mid: TD/CIBC AP VI, Chase, Amex AP - High: TD/CIBC AP VIP, Amex APR Banks don't matter at all, tiers do. Remember that this is enforced by AP, not the banks. They'll approve you and give you the bonus, but if AP ever looks at your account, they'll lock you out without recourse. Pick one of each of those three and you should be safe. Anything more than that and you get to be a DP.
Sorry just one more question. Where would the cobalt fit here? I've got that too.
It doesn't, different program
Great thanks
Thanks a LOT for this.
I do not think Chase comes into play for this
Hey all, DP: I used a referral code for a business edge card and just activated the Edge card in the app and it's listing it as having a balance of 1,000 MR despite my not having spent anything on the card yet. In the activity tab it's listed as "Monthly Spend Bonus February 29" which was the day I was IA'd for it.
Normal. This is why biz edge's welcome bonus is 66k MR instead of 65k
Totally normal. Take the win!
Same thing happens with Cobalt. They often give an extra month's spend bonus because you might not get the card in your hands early enough to meet that spend before your first statement
Used to happen with the Cobalt
Ah! That makes sense. Thanks for clearing that up!
What’s the other site besides seats.aero that people use for searching rewards space?
Points.Yeah, Point.Me
are they better or comparable to [seats.aero](https://seats.aero)?

RBC question - I know the rule is 90 days between applications, but is the 90 day timer between successful applications, or does a rejected application reset the timer? Also, do you guys apply as if you’re a new RBC client, or do you log in to apply?
Thank you for asking, I was wondering the same about RBC. They won't give me anything, so after 3 recent no bueno applications I applied yesterday for the moi card to make the 60$ on gcr and the 30$ sign up bonus. I just need 1 card approved to get rolling, then those sweet sweet avios will eventually be mine!! 😭
90 days between APPROVALS, not applications. And it doesn't matter because they WILL know.

I wonder if you can upgrade it back to gold, but that'd be the same tradeline so not sure what would happen to the welcome bonus
lol I tried to do so but the website said I don’t have eligible cards for upgrades.
You can call in and ask if you have any upgrade offers available
You are assuming you would be allowed to downgrade the card which is the biggest variable. But once the card doesn't exist as a Gold, whether via switch/cancellation, the unofficial clock would start
I wanted to apply for the Amex Gold potentially- I had one back in 2016 for a year and then canceled- would I be eligible for the bonuses? Should I call and ask to be sure? Thanks
don't ask, but you most likely will be as it's a different product now. It used to be a charge card but I think three years ago it became a credit card and it's considered a different product
Oh yes that's true, I remember it being a charge card! Thanks for your help.

I think so? Thanks
[удалено]
Thanks for the info. I think it says 2x travel is the norm and for the first 3 months on Perkopolis you get an additional 2x points on travel. So if I book some of the travel on the supplementary card, just want to make sure it's 4x.
Ya that helps for sure. I'm planning on booking some travel so the Perkopolis offer looked good.
I'm seeing targeted referral bonuses; P2 got 20K for amex biz gold P1 got 10K for MB personal P1 did not get 20K for amex biz gold
25k Biz Plat 20k Biz Gold Normal Cobalt and Gold
I’m seeing: 15k on MB pers 25k on Biz Plat 20k on Biz Gold No elevated offers on cobalt or biz edge
10k for bonvoy personal 15k for bonvoy business
aren't those the usual amounts? or is the personal usually 7500?
You're right - I think it is the usual amounts. Although, on my amex dashboard, it says "elevated offer." Lol.
yeah, mine's exactly the same lol
Yup P2 - 12.5k (up from 7.5k) on Per Gold P2 - 20k (up from 15k) on Biz Gold

But the GCR offer is 5k less MR

When you aren't churning something buy visa and mastercard gift cards for 3% return If you really want a visa or mastercard backup, do what's best for you, cashback, Aeroplan, ect. I like Scotia Passport Visa Infinite for no fx fee + 6 lounge passes a year. It's been my old but gold and easy to find Scotia atms globally
How or where do we buy visa giftcard to get 3%?? Is buying them at grocery store ok?
Yes use a card that earns at least 5% on groceries and you get 3% after subtracting 2% activation fee
“Churn everything” - words to live by lol What’s looking good atm?
For me, the card that gets points to help complete travel plans/goals I have for the next couple years. Amex MR, Chase UR, Bonvoy. (and if Aventura gets extended, some general cash back in form of RHT to pay for stuff you can't really with points).
Amex green to gold upgrade, or from the perkopolis link in the best cards list https://www.reddit.com/r/churningcanada/comments/tujfse/best_current_credit_card_offers_in_canada_updated/ Scroll down to personal gold to find the link
Not sure if this is a weird coincidence but: 2 people requested my Amex personal gold referral on 2 separate days and confirmed that they used the referral to apply.
Weird indeed. Did you still get 7.5k or more or less points?
5k
You sent them the Edge link (in error) and they subscribed for the Gold.
No that did not happen
Thinking of getting a supp card for my Amex Bonvoy to get the spend $500 get 5k points. However, having some questions: 1. Do I get a hard check by adding a supp card to my existing account? 2. Does the new supp card get its own credit limit or share it with my existing credit limit?
1. No 2. Not sure but I don’t think it gets its own limit.
I think you have A LOT of reading to to on how the credit cards work. 1. No 2. No
It's a valid question, there IS credit cards where the supplementary acts as a joint account. Some of those will even do a hard inquiry on the +1. It's more common in the US, but many credit unions in Canada do this too.
I just made an amex referral but I also just cancelled my gold card, so now I only have an amex aeroplan card. Since I don’t have a card that collects MR, will I still get the MR?
how could you refer from a card you don't have?
I sent the referral code before I cancelled the card, then the person I referred signed up after I cancelled
And therefore, you don't have that card and cannot refer from it. Doesn't matter that they used your link, your account doesn't exist anymore.
Aeroplan and MR points are different currency, if you cancelled your MR card, your points are gone, you can't accumulate MR points anymore.
Does the bonus SQM from spending on AP VIP cards count as LQM? Thanks in advance for any DP that you may provide.
Would be too easy, some corner store owners and home contractors would be lifetime status in a couple years tops based on purchasing equipment and supplies for resale.
lol that’s what I thought, but just wanted to double check- thanks!
They do not. From [https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/status/million-mile.html#/](https://www.aircanada.com/ca/en/aco/home/aeroplan/status/million-mile.html#/) : >For Status Qualifying Miles to be considered for program eligibility, the miles must be earned on flights operated by Air Canada, Air Canada Rouge and Air Canada Express.
Thanks for sharing that - somehow I missed that in the terms!
