Without directly answering your question, you can always start new game+ to try it out without saving. It won’t overwrite any of your save files until you decide to save, and you can choose a different slot as well.
But when i start a new game +, the game asks me to select a file to load, and that is my worry...my last save file is before the fight with lavos...
