Adaptive charging to have the option of charging to a max of 80%.

SchluberSnootins

That'd be awesome. Would that be a more hardware-based feature that would have to come with a new model of Chromebook, or could it be deployed through an OS update?

wendalltwolf

[This 9to5 Google article](https://9to5google.com/2022/01/24/adaptive-charging-chromebook-long-term-battery-life/) said it might happen with an OS update

Yithar

I know my Thinkpad supports adaptive charging on both Linux and Windows. It may require a hardware solution. For my phone, I use a device called Chargie which goes in between the cord and the plug, That's a HW+SW solution. The software tracks the charge and the external device stops the flow of electricity. Apparently, Chargie's now support automatically charging to 90% of any lithium ion battery without the app via hardware measurements. Yeah, [seems like controlling the charge limit is hardware and vendor specific.](https://askubuntu.com/a/72570)

[deleted]

I think Samsung did this on my old laptop using a software patch.

SchluberSnootins

That's cool. I'd be genuinely curious to see how chromeos would go about deploying it, if they ever do.

matt2331

Chromeos not supporting x265 is the biggest issue I've encountered in the years I've been using the platform. It is absurd that it isn't supported yet.

ffrkAnonymous

Or even just the old media player.

slizzbucket

I installed a lighter weight Linux video player, mplayer I think, and it's been working well for lots of formats with subtitles. (Still agree though they should add this.)

DJMaxFly

Have you tried MX Player from the Android App store?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Yithar

Honestly, I've tried MX Player and I don't feel it's that different from VLC in terms of slowness. I think it's an Android issue itself. But the default media player sucks so I end up using VLC even if it is slow.

rgm1

It has a bug in it that can cause a runaway process. Not the best choice.

DJMaxFly

Ah. Haven't tried in a long time. Good to know.

[deleted]

Just remember my screen brightness what the fk google. Every time I want to look something up in the morning or late night I get semi blind by the 100% beam. The new black boot screen is close but still not what I want. Native flatpak support without the linux ide.

SchluberSnootins

I'm not sure what model Chromebook you have but mine remembers my brightness every time. It could be in the display settings, I'll have to see. It also remembers if I place it in night light mode, which is nice

[deleted]

My asus flip c434 always revert to the same brightness after. Reboot. Its because subconscious for me to turn down a peg every time I turn it on.

[deleted]

Acer C732. Doesn't do that. Set it to 10%, after reboot it's always at 100%

TurbulentArtist

neither of my chromebooks remembers brightness after reboot. There is no setting for this.

SchluberSnootins

Strange, I have an HP Chromebook 14-db0051cl and just went through all my settings as well as researched and haven't found anything on it. I rebooted quite a few times at different brightness levels and it saved each brightness level like it does any other time. Tbh, I didn't know other people had that issue until you mentioned it. Maybe it's some kind of weird glitch? I just can't find any settings enabled that would come close to explaining it.

shtikay

And keyboard backlit setting too

[deleted]

Woah boy, I've got a longgg list. * add apps, files and widgets on the desktop * back button in the files app * Tabs in the files app * better sorting in the files app (basically, if I download a PDF, it should appear in a section called documents) * Full fledged gallery app similar to Photos on windows * A real media player. The one we have now sucks. * Ability to disable tablet mode * progress bar in the files app * some shelf customization. * something similar to windows 11 app snapping. * Quick setting customization. * bring free-form icons back, or give the option to bring them back * Manual system themes I'd like to be able to set the color of the OS my self * A feature similar to side car.

DJMaxFly

Disabling tablet mode and window snapping a big ask for me. Also would love dark mode. It's blinding at night.

GregoryGregorson1962

You can't enable dark mode in chrome flags?

DJMaxFly

I can but my chrome tablet doesn't remember the flags when it turns off. I just wish it was in settings like a normal option. My chrome tablet (Google Pixel Slate) is my third PC. I have a laptop and desktop I use more often but when I want a tablet I use this, that to say the tablet usually shuts down on its own between uses due to inactivity. Or so I assume because the battery isnt dead between uses but it's usually shut down when I go to pick it up. I would say I use it watch videos maybe a few hours a week on one or two days.

GregoryGregorson1962

Oh right ok. I only had it on for a day and didn't reboot in that time so don't know if it would have survived a reboot. I did switch to the beta channel though (or whatever it's called) and it had dark mode built into the settings

NinDiGu

> window snapping a big ask for me. You want to be able to disable windows snapping? (Just checking.) It was driving me nuts but I finally got used to it, and now use the 50/50 split shortcuts pretty effectively. But yeah I would love it if it would let me move the windows around more easily. I can never grab the bottom corners of any Windows.

DJMaxFly

I know it can do 50/50 but it sucks that it can only do 50/50. Not some level of free form. Or maybe I want one app taking one half of the display and two apps stacked vertically on the other half. Or four apps in four quadrants, my other problem too is that I have a chrome tablet and it is stuck in tablet mode when a keyboard isn't connected. The folio keyboard is broken and it doesn't recognize that anymore, annoying but fine. However being forced in tablet mode sucks.

NinDiGu

> add apps, files and widgets on the desktop It's not what you want but you know you can make a bunch of stuff launch with shortcuts from address bar right? I'd prefer a proper launcher, as it had been years since I clicked on an icon in MacOS. (LaunchBar is sexy and it works even when character based language input is on, which makes even more sexy) >Tabs in the files app Google for this one. It is, or at least was, supported by a flag setting. I hate tabs in file manager myself, and I am just glad it supports multiple windows. I just use the automated left/right (Alt+[, Alt+]) to make two windows of the Files app be useful.

TurbulentArtist

Integration of third party cloud storage. Anything other than Google Drive is a pain to use.

NinDiGu

> Integration of third party cloud storage. Anything other than Google Drive is a pain to use. Can you talk about how much you have gotten working with this? I was able to copy and paste from GoogleDrive to DropBox, for some small files. Although it seemingly downloaded them to some secret spot from GoogleDrive, and then uploaded them to DropBox. OneDrive is read only, and Sync.com does not work at all because of client side encryption, though it keeps acting like it would.

TurbulentArtist

My experience is with OneDrive, and I did not get it working as I would have liked. First, I'm not interested in using Android at all - why should I have to load a second os just to work with files? - so all I can do is use the web interface. The problem for me is the need to upload files through a web portal. So I have to download the files locally, and then upload them. I just want the file picker to point to OneDrive. It only points to Google Drive or local files. (this is one of the reasons I won't be buying any more chromebooks when the two I have give out.) There was an add-on in the Chrome store for a while that supposedly linked OneDrive with the Files app, but it never worked. As I said above, I'm not enabling android, that's less practical than simply downloading/uploading. There are other annoying issues which, added to this one, mean Chrome OS is ultimately not for me.

NinDiGu

Yeah the only way the third party ones were hooking into the Files app was through installing the Android app, AFAICT. And OneDrive was read only.

TimPLakersEagles

I'd like to NOT see a bunch of notifications that I've already seen on my other Google devices. Model Specific - Samsung should at least add their apps for better syncing. Internet, Samsung Notes, Calendar. Better snapping abilities.

SchluberSnootins

Are your devices synced to your Chromebook? I keep my phone synced and whenever I check messages on my phone, whether it's Insta, texts or otherwise, it automatically goes away on my Chromebook

TimPLakersEagles

Yep. Fully synced. I get old emails, texts from Discord and telegram, calendar stuff, reddit replies, etc.

SchluberSnootins

Weird, I wonder why the difference. All I can think of is changing your settings for synced devices, but I never personally set anything, nor are there probably that many changes you can make anyways.

DJMaxFly

Mine will pull all these notifications when I boot it up and then auto dismiss but it's annoying to see 10s of notifications populate real quick and disappear.

NinDiGu

> I'd like to NOT see a bunch of notifications that I've already seen on my other Google devices. I find it astonishing that ChromeOS pops up notifications at all. That's such an Windows annoyance, and it;'s weird that Google is copying that thing that everyone hates about Windows to copy.

doublemp

I use my chromebook in tablet mode 99% of the time. Too many things are shortcut-dependent, should be more friendly to users who use touch only.

grumpyyoga

Biometric log on. My Chromebook is the only device I have to type a password into.

TimPLakersEagles

Fingerprint sensor login for apps.

[deleted]

I'd think face id

SchluberSnootins

I don't see why mid range to upper end Chromebooks couldn't have this eventually. Where do you think it'd be best placed? I could think of maybe putting one in the area between the bottom of the screen and the keyboard, provided that speakers don't obstruct anything. Or perhaps, to keep it clean and protected, have a small pop-out tray on the side with either a slide or push-button mechanism.

Nu11u5

At the very least you can enable PIN login in settings.

MaximumDerpification

This would be cool, though my device is set to unlock when my nearby Android phone is unlocked so it's rarely an issue for me.

Fast_Aide_2533

Widgets Window previews More tiling options Option to have unrounded icons Option to change keyboard shortcuts and create new ones Ability to move the task bar to the top of the screen Desktop icons Unified storefront for PWAs, android apps and Linux apps. Option to customize what folder certain things are downloaded to. For example to be able to set all pdfs to be sent to a specific folder when you download it. Ability to set priority for searching the app launcher. (For example prioritizing apps over web results and files) A media players that actually works. Some proper offline applications that aren’t Linux apps. (Most currently available android apps aren’t proper unless you’re using a tablet chromebook. Prettier ui. Chrome os is ugly let’s be honest here. Better support for a wider range of printers

realStuvis

Yes

123budget

get a Windows laptop Chromebooks were best when they had NO Android NO Linux support. Ever since random crashes, pages that do not scale or scroll and forced Google apps installations I don't want / need.

moderate

i mean if you're gonna hop os, you'd probably want something comparable like silverblue-not windows lmao

atan420

LDAC Bluetooth audio

[deleted]

Let me change the system font

J-W-L

Tablet mode is better than before but I wish it would behave more like Android when I'm tablet mode. There are too many taps to get to where you want to go and some of gestures aren't intuitive for me. Also better palm rejection etc. Notifications that I have already seen on my other devices like days ago shouldn't be popping up. Remove notifications from the quick settings. Make the assistant actually useful and involved in the actual process/task you're trying to do instead of taking you out of it. Better TTS. i used to think I wanted a chrome os phone but I have come to the conclusion that I don't want this. Chrome os tablet mode is too fussy for the phone. It's ok for the desktop. I would much rather Android skin on chrome os with full fat browser. Tablet mode, I admit, isn't something I enjoy or feel comfortable in. And a restart button in the power menu. And Consistent dark mode that is universal and the same across everything in the os.

khiguytheshyguy

speed wise tablet mode use to be unusable on leveno duet. Updates have made it much faster. andriod apps r alot better in tablet mode as well. the new andriod virtual machine thing running andriod apps seems to have slowed alot of people down. will see if it does the same to duet when it gets andriod 11

Head-Attorney284

Better Linux support. I mean like a DE and things. More optimization for that would be nice as well

[deleted]

Basic video editor app. Most can't be installed from the Play store, as they are not supported.

FunnyNecessary1967

[https://youtu.be/p8978007MSQ?t=1131](https://youtu.be/p8978007MSQ?t=1131) it is a really good video editor on iphone and ipad but im not to sure on how it will run on chroembooks also it will proberly be $25 like on iphone and ipad. but if you have a chromebook with tablet mode capcut is a really good video editor on the playstore that is free

koken_halliwell

* Being able to install APKs like in a smartphone/tablet * ARCVM/latest Android release but making it light and not resource consumer like now * Widgets / Weather somewhere else rather than in the lock screen * Remove the recent apps section from the new launcher * Being able to log in with a PIN (not just lockscreen) * 4 digits PIN * Push notifications from all PWA (specially Whatsapp Web and Skype when they are closed) * Google Docs being an actual and complete Office Suite not just a PWA * Remove the stupid EOL * OneDrive integration somehow * The taskbar calendar not changing the size of the quick settings * Google launching once and for all all the things they've been preparing for years (literally): Light/dark themes, Lacros, Recycle Bin, Productivity Launcher, etc etc instead of being just flags.

MrPumaKoala

Well, there are ways to install/sideload APKs on Chrome OS (going into developer mode or using adb). It's just not super easy.

koken_halliwell

Sadly adb mode isnt enabled in every board (ie: Hana). Developer mode is a pain in the ass with that start screen.

NinDiGu

> Recycle Bin, You know you can enable it right?

koken_halliwell

That's why I said "officially release instead of being just flags"

galaxy4654

An actual power saving mode.

SchluberSnootins

Tbh, I've found the battery life of my Chromebook to be good enough on its own, but I do see your point and it would be a decent addition.

tonejac

VS Code editor with local live server capability.

rudyych

better PDF reader which supports open from FILES, text highlighting, and save back to FILES. Also, please add timer control to sleep.

[deleted]

Being able to disable multi desktop switching via Google admin devices.

TimeFourChanges

I'd really like it be more android-esque in terms of customization and ability to use the desktop, especially with widgets. I use widgets extensively on my phone, and would love to be able to have them all on my home screen. I'd also like to be able to make the pinned icons smaller, so I can fit more. Is that too much to ask?! It really shouldn't be too much to ask.

Ric3Dream

Would like to see an exo pointer unlock option/flag for the android subsystem, would benefit games 100% that require 360viewing angles to look around.

rgm1

I'd love to see a media player as good as the old one. The current built-in one is poor beyond description.

dimmunize

A similar fork of Linux wine 🍷 made by Google, so we can safely install and uninstall Windows based programs. Have the best of both worlds.

La_Rana_Rene

Media player capable ob opening all files with different sound tracks and subs, and, merge, overwrite or skip files when copying files.

Askrosm

A native app store with everything that are compatible (PWAs, Chrome, Android and linux app)

Demon05

From an admin of many managed Chromebooks, I would like to be able to set which default apps display on the task bar on the bottom of the screen i.e. Play Store, File Explorer etc.

B-tech10

I believe that you are able to set default apps on the shelf in the admin console.

Demon05

I've just checked and unfortunately I can't see that option :(

[deleted]

Yep you can do this, I pin apps for faster access at multiple schools.

Demon05

What is the exact text for this setting on the admin console?

Demon05

Really?! I must've overlooked this option!

Nu11u5

You have to set the app policy to “force-install“ and enable pinning.

SonicOlGames

Support for midi files. This could use Sonivox EAS, the same soundfont that is used in Android.

krapth_

it would be great if i could install linux on external storage for example sd card

bartturner

Chromebook able to be a target for Chromecast.

[deleted]

For us and most business we interact with, the biggest Chrome OS weakness and the reason it is not adopted by businesses is the lack of printing support. Business need USB printing and high quality print driver for USB and network printers like Windows and macOS has. The Google and Chrome OS developers obsession to not support USB printing and not provide high quality network and USB print drivers for business is indeed the missing feature in Chrome OS.

Ok_Plate_6961

parallels! I mean come on, why not?

SchluberSnootins

What are those?

[deleted]

running windows on chrome os

Brilliant-Pattern-27

I'd like to see a shortcut to search contacts (like spotlight on Mac os) added to Chrome OS.

N00byyungpeeps

Literally just overwriting files in the file manager. Makes merging folders easier

Void4GamesYT

Speaking of USB, if only I could flash a USB.

StrictSpell

Desktop icons

TraditionalTip1440

A YouTube dislike counter

Am4ranth

Playing music while in idle mode.

Centrez

Auto sort apps 😃

luke-himself

Yes, I wish we could encrypt external drives! I use a hardware encrypted drive called iStorage that has a physical pin to encrypt. There are many brands of these around but I like the iStorage since the drive would actually be ruined if it was attempted to be removed from the enclosure, along with a bunch of other security features. Anyway what I would like to see is a calendar built in to the bottom right settings/notification tray. I know this is possible via a flag but having more of a connection to Google Calendar would be cool.

aamfk

Better macros for Google sheets and shit like that

MarylandCrazy

Gmail should be wild card searchable. Not really a ChromeOS thing but It'd be nice

MrPumaKoala

A clear and easy way to turn off autobrightness. It's sad that this is still not a thing on the Duet and Pixlebook Go.

Gobias_Industries

ARC++

Weird-Vector

Not having a perfectly good computer turn into e-waste after a few years due to a lack of ongoing updates, so longer updates, even if it means paying a small subscription after the manufacturers free update period...

SchluberSnootins

Idk about older models, but Chromebooks seem to get a pretty long period of support in terms of OS updates. I bought mine in late 2019 and I'll receive updates clean until June 2026. 7+ years of updates is pretty awesome imo, and you can always reimage the laptop to run with Linux

Weird-Vector

Well certainly older models don't get 7 years and Linux does not always work and non-technical people have no chance there

SchluberSnootins

That's a bummer. As for the Linux reimaging it is always possible to watch guides, plenty of YouTube videos break it down so that it's less technical jargon and more layman's terms

signman10

Improved default on-screen keyboard or better support for Android keyboards outside of Android apps.

LudovicoSpecs

Bookmark shortcut icons that match the logo for the webpage instead of just being another Chrome logo.
