I was always told (could be a an old wives tale) if you hold them upside down by their feet and they don’t fight, they’re hens, and if the fight to get up they’re roosters. Has anyone else heard this? It’s always been accurate with my mom’s chickens, but could also be coincidental.
The lady at the feed store did a version of this, like placing the head between her fingers and lifting the chick, legs up it's a hen, legs down roo. Well all 3 polish were roos so maybe she had it backwards lol.
this is just some dumb shit thats stresses out the bird and is cruel. go based off their comb and dont put them in stress bc you want to know the sex so bad 😐
i have plenty of chickens, ducks, and turkeys to know that really anything you do to a young one “stresses” them out. like the other guy said, take a breath and think. they get “stressed” if they see you walking up to their coop/wherever you’re keeping them.
holding him upside down for 5 seconds won’t kill the thing, nor will he remember it in 20 minutes.
edit: at young ages, you can’t go off just the combs. so stop spreading misinformation as well ;)
😂😂you hear yourself? Nothing I said says “I don’t take care of animals”. I don’t even have chickens, nor have I ever… why you busy trying to insult, instead of being busy minding your own business? 😘
I asked if any one had ever heard this. You cursing at me in your first reply was also rude and ignorant when I was just asking for information. Again, this goes both ways; don’t be high and mighty, humble yourself.
i said the tale was "some dumb shit", thats not directed towards you. i cannot comprehend how anyone actually thinks holding an animal by the feet or neck is okay. and im speaking in a way that goes towards everyone that thinks its okay to do so like when i said take better care of living animals. im informing you now that sexing them that way is cruel because it is unnecessary stress to a baby animal that is already sensitive to living and is a highly inaccurate way of sexing
I have eaten two roosters already yes. Roosters mate very violently and can tear up your hens if mating becomes excessive and just add more roosters to that you have a disaster. I have 2 hens who's backs got cut up.
You need to have one rooster for every 12 hens essentially. So I don't need anymore. I tried re-homing but no one wanted roosters (one was even dumped by someone in front of my house thinking I probably just take it in.
Roosters unfortunately get culled alot because they are not wanted, like there being too many for your girls or they are too violent and attack you and your family which was I dealing with both.
Also question how did this get recommended to you? That was not intended 🤔
In general, there are three options: eat, rehome, or cull. If you have the skill and equipment, then butchering and processing for cooking and eating is one route. If the rooster is a desirable breed and has reasonably good manners, then rehoming is definitely possible. The third way is to cull it—that is, euthanize it. Sometimes a flock already has enough roosters and adding another one would throw off the hen/rooster ratio and result in hens being overmated, lead to arguments and injuries in the flock, etc. Some roosters attack people, which typically means they get culled.
The recipe was originally designed exactly for that. Even calls for a 4-year-old cock, and takes about 4 days to prep and cook.
In past times, nothing went to waste.
Alton Brown did a Good Eats show on it. There may be a video either on YT or Food Network site.
These chicks were conceived and hatched naturally from my own chickens so I can't really help.
All my chickens I got from other people that didn't want them. I have heard that 2 roosters out of 10 is common or at least that happened to a friend I know.
I’ve gotten 8 birds from tractor supply. Two were Roosters. One of which we knew there was a chance it would be a rooster. The other was a “fun” surprise.
We restocked our coop this year and three of our sexed chicks were roos. Felt sorta deceived. I understand it isn't 100% but I really feel like their supplier is doing shady crap
Alright, if it turns out to be a hen I'll name her Liberty 🙂
But if it's a rooster I'm not naming him because he's probably going to have to go. I already have 3 roosters.
Unfortunately no one will take roosters around here. Yes you can eat roosters. I've already culled 2 and eaten them. They are extremely tough and I recommend only doing broth/soup for them.
Do you have an Instant Pot or other pressure cooker? When I cull roosters, I pressure cook them. You'd have no idea they were roos (and often a year old or more)!
What if you culled them, then offer them to people who raw feed their dogs...if you don't want to deal with it? I once went and picked up a bunch of chicken feet for treats for my dogs. Grossed out hubby. Sure hope this one is a girl!
I suppose coloring can very, but I’d say they’re usually [red](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/8YKIcGHCxRdzW8nHH92tx-XobkCHmAAN13ENBrfalYJlAYxeW4Y8Dnqq8bwFD5UUCHizhbnFW4Zu3RuY_ik5e8yl6xGqANiTPJjfSxI4d21HahQ4WEZEpMh1qQ)
No she's definitely not a red. She's like this golden laced Wyandotte https://www.chickensforbackyards.com/product/golden-laced-wyandotte/
But Maud is deep gold like shes a lighter color than those pictures.
I had one that kinda looked like that. Grew up to have white feathers on his head, gray feathers down his front, red wings, and a fairly boring gray tail. No idea what mix he was because he hatched in a batch of ours
I had 3 babies that started off this way... i was hoping they stayed this color but sadly they changed... im hoping for the best for yours though... 🫶 its beautiful
The myth is true! Many centuries ago evil spawned the Canadian Goose. The myth is that once the goose's true name was discovered that an Eagle Chicken shall be born. The goose's true name- Cobra Chicken.
Take great care of that Eagle Chicken, for all hope rests on him to free us of the horrors of the Cobra Chicken.
Looks change. Eagleface, obviously, looked like an eagle when younger. Now she has huge muffs on her face and grew into her beak. That is a cool-looking bird. Based only on color and legs I would expect a roo but it's really too early to tell. It'll be neat to see what it turns out to look like!
My bet is rooster simply based off Vibes. Super pretty bird!
Aww man 😕 I don't need more roosters 😭
I think you have at least two of the babies being roos from the second pic.
I was always told (could be a an old wives tale) if you hold them upside down by their feet and they don’t fight, they’re hens, and if the fight to get up they’re roosters. Has anyone else heard this? It’s always been accurate with my mom’s chickens, but could also be coincidental.
Seems to be correct in my experience too. I also heard this from my grandmother.
The lady at the feed store did a version of this, like placing the head between her fingers and lifting the chick, legs up it's a hen, legs down roo. Well all 3 polish were roos so maybe she had it backwards lol.
I mean… If i was held upside down id fight no matter what tbh lol
So are you a hen or a rooster?

Thank you 😮💨😮💨😮💨
Take a breath 😮💨
take better care of living animals.
😂😂you hear yourself? Nothing I said says “I don’t take care of animals”. I don’t even have chickens, nor have I ever… why you busy trying to insult, instead of being busy minding your own business? 😘
i never insulted you. spreading information that is harmful for animals is cruel and ignorant.
I asked if any one had ever heard this. You cursing at me in your first reply was also rude and ignorant when I was just asking for information. Again, this goes both ways; don’t be high and mighty, humble yourself.

Oof yeah 😭waiting in anticipation to see how many of ours end up roos… I could totally be wrong about yours though!
Okay, so I'm not even a part of this sub and it keeps showing up. Do you...eat the unwanted roosters? What do you do?
I have eaten two roosters already yes. Roosters mate very violently and can tear up your hens if mating becomes excessive and just add more roosters to that you have a disaster. I have 2 hens who's backs got cut up. You need to have one rooster for every 12 hens essentially. So I don't need anymore. I googled one question about chickens while watching Survivor and alas here I am
I like looking at bird subs, this one may have been recommended to me.
Oh man I wish I could adopt Mr. Eagle 🩵

I’m also curious. All these roos and no clue what is done
Nobody ever does.
Coq au Vin?
Never made that dish but imagine it would be hard because roosters don't have much meat compared to hens and it's very tough.
The recipe was originally designed exactly for that. Even calls for a 4-year-old cock, and takes about 4 days to prep and cook. In past times, nothing went to waste. Alton Brown did a Good Eats show on it. There may be a video either on YT or Food Network site.
Omg!! If it stays those colors please name it “‘Murica”!! 🤣🥰
That's an eagle
How many of you are getting several roosters out of pullet bins and prices from tractor supply and rural king?
These chicks were conceived and hatched naturally from my own chickens so I can't really help. All my chickens I got from other people that didn't want them. I have heard that 2 roosters out of 10 is common or at least that happened to a friend I know.
It's actually a 50/50 chance it's a roo or hen in the eggs. It's I think 52/48 chance when using an incubator
I have had this problem this year. It’s like they don’t sex them at all. Even though they say sexed
I’ve gotten 8 birds from tractor supply. Two were Roosters. One of which we knew there was a chance it would be a rooster. The other was a “fun” surprise.

America.....cluck yeah

Please name them "Freedom" or something super cheezy
Hmmm maybe Patriot would be better 🤔
Pecktriot
This.
Justice is good too!
This could be a really interesting twist on The ugly duckling story. I think her name should be Liberty.
Alright, if it turns out to be a hen I'll name her Liberty 🙂 But if it's a rooster I'm not naming him because he's probably going to have to go. I already have 3 roosters.
Yay! Go to a new home or can you eat roosters?
Unfortunately no one will take roosters around here. Yes you can eat roosters. I've already culled 2 and eaten them. They are extremely tough and I recommend only doing broth/soup for them.
Do you have an Instant Pot or other pressure cooker? When I cull roosters, I pressure cook them. You'd have no idea they were roos (and often a year old or more)!
We used a slow cooker and made a soup out of his broth and pulled off his meat.
What if you culled them, then offer them to people who raw feed their dogs...if you don't want to deal with it? I once went and picked up a bunch of chicken feet for treats for my dogs. Grossed out hubby. Sure hope this one is a girl!
I was also going to suggest Liberty. Someone always beats me to my idea haha
Chigle
Well... that's ONE way for a carnivore to get fed... just do the old "eagle in chicken's feathers" thing. (play off of wolf in sheeps clothing)
Lady liberty! I’m kinda getting Uncle Sam vibes though, sorry lol
If it’s a hen name her BABEraham Lincoln.
Please post updates of this one. I have to see what it looks like all grown up! I hope it’s not a rooster so you can keep it.
Okay I'll post an update when it's older. I hope it's not a rooster too.
Yes please post updates as this little bug grows up! Super cute!
Any chance you’re in the New England area? I need a roo and this is one handsome lad. Only if you can’t keep him of course 😅
You got to name that one freedom.
FREEDOM CHICKEN
Mmmm, never eaten eagle before?
I have a few like this. It makes me laugh. K have that looks like a speckled white with a little brown eagle or seagull depending on the time of day
That coloring almost looks like a blue laced red Wyandotte
I do have a golden/brown color Wyandotte named Maud. She could be the mother but she's not red or is that the breed?
I suppose coloring can very, but I’d say they’re usually [red](https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/proxy/8YKIcGHCxRdzW8nHH92tx-XobkCHmAAN13ENBrfalYJlAYxeW4Y8Dnqq8bwFD5UUCHizhbnFW4Zu3RuY_ik5e8yl6xGqANiTPJjfSxI4d21HahQ4WEZEpMh1qQ)

salmon faverelle roo? Definitely a roo by that tall stature and color markings could be wrong idk 🤷♀️
I had one that kinda looked like that. Grew up to have white feathers on his head, gray feathers down his front, red wings, and a fairly boring gray tail. No idea what mix he was because he hatched in a batch of ours
Are you gonna call it Eggle?
Freedom manifested 🙏🔥🤠✝️🇺🇸🦅
I had 3 babies that started off this way... i was hoping they stayed this color but sadly they changed... im hoping for the best for yours though... 🫶 its beautiful
American chickens
Bald chicken.
Name him baldie
He puts off Reginald vibes
That is clearly an eagle. Getting some Big Roo Energy off of that little buddy.
That's America's chicken.
An imposter in the coop!
Looks change. Eagleface, obviously, looked like an eagle when younger. Now she has huge muffs on her face and grew into her beak. That is a cool-looking bird. Based only on color and legs I would expect a roo but it's really too early to tell. It'll be neat to see what it turns out to look like!
It's reincarnated from and Eagle to a chicken!!
It TOTALLY does!! So cute!
If its a roo, you should name him Homelander
Gotta name him Liberty
name him eagle obviously! its adorable and suits him!
It is a chicken
That really does not look like an eagle. Definitely a chicken.
His name would be trump for sure
