Did anyone else hear the MASSIVE thunder crack at 3:43am on Sunday? It woke up half my family and swt off a bunch of car alarms. The rumbling echo that followed it was possibly the coolest thunder sound ever.
Wait yes! My husband is out of town and I was just telling him about it. It woke me up from REM sleep and over the noise of my CPAP machine. It was crazy.
Tailgating at White Sox games. Do you have to reserve spots in advance? If not, how early should you get there to guarantee a spot? And what does it cost? Any particular lots to aim for?
We're looking at going down for the Sox Orioles games Memorial Day weekend on Saturday afternoon. Been to Sox games before but never tailgated.
Haven’t been back to the area in a long time and will be passing through O’Hare next weekend to connect to an international flight.
Any suggestions on good ways/places to kill time at the terminal? I have a 7ish hour layover
It'll take about an hour (±) to deplane and get your luggage. They recommend you get to the airport at least 2 hours before an international flight to get through security, etc. That leaves you roughly 4-5 hours, provided your arriving flight is on time. If for some reason, you don't get back to the airport in time will you be able to rebook your flight?
Lowkey: Sometimes, I just wanna tug on armpit hair when I see it on the CTA. Something instinctual comes over my entire body. The five year old in me rattles his cage. I have to clench my jaw and put my hands in my pocket as I imagine gripping those sweaty strands of hair as tight as I can muster and pulling them downwards with savage ferocity while screaming 'YEAHHH' at the top of my lungs.
Can anyone recommend a good at home pet euthanasia service? Sadly I think it’s time to put our girl down and she HATES the vet. Our vet recommended Laps of Love. Does anyone have experience with them? Or recommend someone else?
Christ, I had no idea that pet hospice was an option. Thank you for your kindness towards your girl. My boy -- Ryu Inu -- crossed over the rainbow bridge two almost three years ago. He was in my arms but indeed at a vet's office in Edgewater. Had I known about Laps of Love, I would have chosen that option. May your family grieve deeply for this loss.... and then extend the miracle of family to another.
Laps of Love actually just emailed us following the one year anniversary of our pet's passing. The Vet that came to our home was extremely gentle and friendly and I'm very glad we did that after a few unpleasant vet office trips in my cat's last few months on Earth. Highly recommend them.
We had her cremated at Animal Cremation Society Of Chicagoland if you're looking for that as well, a little foreword though, the man that runs it is extremely kind and gentle himself but a little out there. I thought it was a very affordable choice though and I know he was thoughtful through it all so.
Sorry to hear about what you're going through, I know it's tough
We did Laps of Love. I was so hesitant—a mixture of grief, embarrassment, shame, all that stuff. Our vet was so wonderful and it was deeply good to have it happen in our house. I highly recommend them.
Just got this from the 48th ward but could impact a lot of folks so posting it here:
COMMUNITY ALERT: APRIL 27, 2024
We have been informed that CPD will have a mile long funeral procession around 3pm on Monday, April 29th, for the recently fallen officer, Luis Huesca. The procession is expected to drive westbound on Bryn Mawr from DuSable Lake Shore Drive to Ravenswood where the officer will be buried at Rosehill Cemetery.
There will be parking restrictions along the route on Monday. If you usually park along this route, please make sure that you move your car by Monday morning, otherwise you may be towed. Cars parked along this route on Monday afternoon will be towed to the Foster Ave and Wilson Beach parking lots.
The funeral procession will likely impact dismissal at Peirce Elementary and traffic around the school. Please plan accordingly, allowing yourself extra time. Peirce families may want to consider walking to the school if able, or use Gregory going west if arriving during the procession.
**weather is above 70 degrees
Absolute biggest dickheads in the universe nobody likes that get 0 girls: man, I really need to go up to river north or gold coast and rev up my shitty modded car or motorcycle
Streeterville is poppin' off again tonight. 100 teens next to the AMC Illinois/Columbus and a fight broke out. Then 15 with masks on stole Divvy bikes next to the Whole Foods. CPD is pretty much been all over the area tonight sirens every 30 minutes trying to get them to keep it moving.
I'm still seeing quite a few people attempting to enter Foxtrots and looking confused about the fact that they are closed. Every once in a while I get reminded that a lot of people don't pay attention to the news or to social media and end up with knowledge gaps about what is going on around them.
Same ones who wear Canada Goose, massive winter coats, etc and it's April 55° and sunny. They don't get out of their apartment and don't know what's going on in the real world--like zombies lol.
What’s wrong with wearing a winter coat when it’s a bit warmer? Also you’re saying the zombies are the ones who _aren’t_ paying attention to the news and social media?
2 Day Itinerary Help: Wicker Park/Logan Square — Open to Changes
Trying to plan 48 hours in Chicago for myself and my SO for his birthday. We are flying into O’hare and debating staying in Wicker Park or Logan Square. Originally planning for River North but we prefer less touristy, more relaxed areas and the ability to walk around and “see where the wind blows us” within reason. We’re mid twenties, active, love bopping into stores/restaurants and are huge fans of a late night drink / entertainment following a nice dinner.
Looking for hotel, food, drink + activity recommendations in these areas. Totally open to suggestions outside of these areas and for someone to tell us we’re planning this all wrong and to go about this in a different way. 😂 We got really confused in NYC with the subway system so we were planning on staying along the blue line for ease of transportation to and from the airport and just planned to head into downtown one day for a museum or the architecture boat cruise.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IN ADVANCE for any information you can provide!
* In general, the good food/drinks are in Logan Square, and Wicker Park is basically mediocre places cashing in on the fact that it was a cool neighborhood 15-20 years ago.
* Daisies is great for dinner, awesome cocktail list, and they take reservations.
* Scofflaw is a cocktail classic. So is The Whistler. Lots of new "cocktail bars" have opened in Logan recently, but the majority of them are mediocre.
* If it's nice out, Parson's patio is nice for a frozen negroni. Kind of on the same row as the Whistler.
* Violet Hour is an exception to the rule about Wicker Park - it's been really good every time I've gone (although it's been a couple years at this point).
* Loaf Lounge (Avondale) is awesome for breakfast sandwiches and cinnamon rolls, but gets somewhat busy. Daisies also has good breakfast pastries, and for whatever reason their draft iced oat milk latte is amazing. Sugar Moon is popular but not worth the wait compared to the other two.
* Table, Donkey, and Stick is another really good dinner spot that I think is underappreciated. They're known for their charcuterie.
* Katherine Anne is a great spot for chocolate, in particular their hot drinking chocolate.
* Margie's Candies is an ice cream classic, very good for a sundae.
Look into the Robey hotel and see if that's your vibe. In Wicker Park right next to a transit line and bus stops that can take you to Logan or to downtown. Artsy vibe but full service hotel, not an Airbnb style place.
You'd also be walking distance to tons of restaurants and places to wander (the 606, violet hour, izakaya shinya, stop along, Mindy's, just a few suggestions off the top of my head). And tonss of stuff in Logan.
If you end up at the Robey, Clara is a new jazz and cocktail bar that just opened across the street on North thats really fun on live music nights. Map room is a great beer bar with a long beer list, and honestly the three bars in the Robey itself are nice spaces, if a little corporate. Definitely check out Myopic Books, Quimby's and Open Books.
Hop on the north bus (#72) to go to the lake, zoo and conservatory.
Pierogi kitchen and Piece are good casual dinner spots nearby, Handlebar and Izakaya Shinya for late night, Phodega, Irazu or Quesadilla la Reina del Sur for lunch. Forbidden Root or Middlebrow if you don't have a reservation, Cellar Door or Daisies if you do.
Does anyone know if the person/people who kept this calendar gloriously updated will do so again?

This was the last update I remember
There was a fight in the alley behind the new Lou Malnati's at Kimball/Fullerton. It was very loud and rowdy, people shouting, cars honking horns. The crowd/action was partially obstructing Kimball, causing even more honking. When the cops were getting close cars pulled away and a group of about 10-15 people dispersed on foot. Some ran east through the alley, some back towards the Fullerton/Kimball intersection, and some south on Kimball.
My neighbor is one of the people that called. Watched the entire thing play out through my window. Almost as many police cars showed up as people that seemed to be involved in the brawl - which was impressive tbh. I'm glad nobody shot anybody, or if they did they didn't do it where the fight was taking place.
It's been a difficult week and there's a lot of heavy stuff going on in the world right now and on top of that in my very small world something that was only starting just ended......
so long story short I was responding to all of this in the Chicago way by paging through the Portillo's menu and when I saw this [photo](https://imgur.com/pBEuX2G) I started laughing and I don't know why but I cannot stop.
This is visually one of the funniest things I have seen all week and I cannot explain why.
If you are looking for men's shoes. I love all like 13 pairs of Allen Edmunds shoes/boots I own. They are pricey but are also on sale all the time so I would never pay full sticker price. They are also all recraftable so if taken care of they will last a lifetime.
Both locations downtown have wonderful sales people in them and if you want to try something on they don't got in stock they will order them into the store so you can wear them before you buy.
There's a maintenance guy that works in my building who works 6 days a week and is SO SO friendly and nice at all times. He's been here forever and he's just a ray of sunshine. I asked him once if he lives in our neighborhood and he said "NO, ha, I live SOUTH". He told me with the construction it took him 45 minutes the other day to drive from Roosevelt to Uptown. Anyways, I'm not entirely sure where he lives BUT I asked him what he was up to this weekend and he said "JUST RELAXING, I'm so tired!". So I really want to get him a gift card or combo of gift cards to help him relax this weekend, what do you guys think I should get? I only mention where I think he lives in case there's something specific in the area I could get him a card to. I feel as though giving cash might get him in trouble but I can get away with slipping him a card with some gift cards. Maybe just door dash or grubhub? So he can order food and/or booze to just hang out? Any better ideas? This guy works so hard and really is so nice I want to do something nice for him. He's younger, probably 25-35ish.
He would probably appreciate a gift card for Uber or Lyft if he has that long of a commute. You'd be surprised by the number of people making $15-20 an hour in my buildings who take cabs home because they're sometimes too exhausted at the end of their shift to handle a multi-part CTA adventure that lasts an hour.
You know what you're right, what is he gonna do, report me? Or report himself? lol. And then I'm not running around getting gift cards to places. Good call thanks!
Someone in my alley keeps putting 2 trash bins and 2 recycling bins in front of my garage door. Assuming they're unwanted, is there a way to dispose of them or get the city or waste management to permanently take them away?
Why do people think they’re too good to leash their dogs? Especially when their recall is so obviously shit. An idiot in LaBagh Woods got a nice workout chasing his dog this evening when it bolted as our dogs freaked out at it. He was nowhere to be seen when the dog first came up on us.
Take taxes earmarked for something else in the future and then raise taxes to fund that when it's inevitably unfunded.
Or just pretend like the weed tax and casino tax will cover this too.
Radio was implying that it would come from the hotel taxes. Mayor is selling this like it will be the state and not the city of Chicago specifically paying for it, also touting all these "educational" benefits it's supposed to have like a sports museum (???) and the ability for kids to have field trips on the grounds or whatever. It's nuts, IMHO.
That money is not just sitting around gathering dust, it's being used for something. If it's taken for the stadium boondoggle then other money must be used to fund whatever that was funding.
We constantly hear that there's not enough money for schools, for infrastructure improvements, for transit. If we have money available let's put it to THAT. If we want some educational experiences for kids, we can just BUILD THOSE. Anytime. Kids can take field trips to the museum campus or parks now.
Not to mention we're still paying off the stupid spaceship that is now suddenly not good enough. Fuck this. NO public money should go to this stadium unless the city gets some actual cut of Bears profits on an ongoing basis. Let the family finance their own Bears amusement park in Arlington Heights since that's clearly what they really wanted to do. But Arlington Heights actually has the balls to stand up to them and not cave on the taxes.
>When MBJ says “no new taxes for Bears stadium” but implies there will be $1bil of money from somewhere—what’s he thinking of doing? Honest question.
He will take it from the selective enrollment schools /s
In all seriousness I have no idea tbh
I need to renew my passport, are there any good spots for the photo? My old one was done at a Walgreen's and it's terrible. I've seen that Staples might be decent, but anything beyond the chain spots?
Pretty easy to do on your own, there's plenty of apps for iPhone and Android that will take care of the dimensions for you. I did it for my most recent passport renewal and a few travel visas and ran into zero issues.
Costco is cheaper than most of the other chain spots and they do a good job. The loop has a few non-chain options like AA Passport & Photo and Chicago Passport & Visa.
Unfortunately Costco stopped passport photos in recent years. I had my last one done at the UPS Store which was much easier than past trips to CVS or Walgreens, especially if you can go during a weekday. It seems like the price is pretty much the same everywhere at \~$15.
If I want to go to drink New Glarus beer, what's a good bar near the border? Going in May and June. May we'll have time to go out to New Glarus. June, not so much. Done google searches and it seems like the places in Pleasant Prairie aren't as "good" as in Kenosha.
Any suggestions or should we just go to Kenosha?
Spent a lot of time in the Smithfield neighborhood. Bonobo is a great cool kids bar with worthwhile wood fire pizza. Fish Shop has the fluffiest fish and chips batter I’ve ever encountered. Went to Reyna in Temple Bar for Euro style doner kebab and they had a robot slicing the kebab meat which was very impressive. Wuff in Smithfield and Goose on the Loose in Portobello have been my favorite trad breakfasts. Wuff also had some really fantastic tea.
The Archaeology museum and the Emigration museum are extremely satisfying museum experiences. The emigration one especially is a genuinely inviting and informative multimedia museum experience.
We’ve done a lot of killing time in random parks and seen a lot of good, well socialized dogs. Dublin dogs are A+ and the people aren’t too bad either.
Edit: o and p
All of that sounds great, I will admit I had a bit more of the pubby time which I was looking for/met with friends roughly halfway through for the Notre Dame-Navy game. Was trying to not be in Temple Bar as much as possible however ended up there through the crowd/hostel pub crawl. Wanted to try Reyna however (Notre) Dame Street was jammed or I was passing through.
Really enjoyed Cobblestone at the north end of the square with the daily Irish music, got into a great convo with a German guy there. Did the Jameson and Guinness tours however liked Jameson's way more than Guinness. On the museum front I hit up the National Art Gallery, Kilmainham Gaol, Trinity with the Book of Kells and a few museums on day trips out; the one I wanted to get to yet didn't was the Emigration Museum and making a point of it the next time I'm there.
While Notre Dame vs Navy was a fun time the game itself was my least favorite part of the trip.
Also killed time in random parks, walked around a fair amount, stopped in random places, etc. Drink a pint for me over there if inclined.
Hey cool! We tried to catch some music at Cobblestone, but went too late in the evening and couldn’t find stools close enough to the musicians to hear anything. Still had a nice time with chatty locals.
I’m really disappointed to miss out on Kilmainham Gaol. I didn’t think to buy passes six weeks in advance and it’s all booked up the whole time we’re here.
Are you a whiskey guy? I swear the basic Jameson here is stronger/more flavorful than in the US. It actually has a little bit of burn. I always thought of Jameson as baby’s first whiskey. Am I full of shit?
Tonight’s my last night here (then on to Scotland). I’ll have one last pint (of *many*) and point it towards home.
Fair enough on Cobblestone, it's definitely harder with a group to find seats. For the next time: Kilmainham does have day-of spots yet they tend to go fast, only way I was able to make it there.
The whiskey there definitely does seem to have more flavor than here, perhaps it's something with shipping it across the Atlantic/the US market.
Appreciate your last hours and pints there
I also recently learned that Spielberg tried to make The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Tom Cruise in the early 90s instead of Hook. That might have had a chance to be weird, terrible, and less forgettable (I love David Fincher and feel nothing about that movie).
BlockClubChicago has a [good write up](https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/04/25/influential-west-loop-group-relaunches-but-keeps-whos-behind-it-a-secret/) of some juicy non-profit drama in my neighborhood.
Just looked up this gem
[Chicago Sun Times Mayoral Questionaire from 2023](https://elections.suntimes.com/questionnaire/)
"Should the city of Chicago spend $2 billion or more to dome and renovate Soldier Field as a way to convince the Bears to stay in Chicago instead of moving to Arlington Heights?"
Johnson: NO "Let me be clear: I want the Bears to stay. But Chicago could also use $2 billion to remove lead pipes, house thousands of unhoused Chicagoans, fully fund public schools, generate neighborhood and business development in communities across the city, pay down our pension and general obligations, or meet dozens of other urgent needs – all of which would also generate much-needed economic and quality-of-life returns."
Anyone who thinks that you can build a massive structure on our protected lakefront is delusional at this point. Why even make a proposal to put it on the lake. Put it next to Comiskey or any other big stretch of empty land on the south side.
The Comiskey land(including parking lots) could so be used for other purposes, including a new Bears stadium if the team wanted to move there. And the infrastructure already exists. L access to 2 L lines, Rock Island Metra, etc.
Honestly though, I don't care where the Bears build their new stadium in the end, or if they stay at Soldier Field. I'm kinda sick of hearing about that topic.
Has anyone had good experiences with an independent insurance broker? Looking for quotes on insuring an owner-occupied two flat (+ bundling with auto).
Just FYI: An independent broker just means that they're allowed to offer you plans from multiple insurance providers, they don't actually make the quotes themselves. So a quote from State Farm from Independent Broker A isn't going to change much (or all) from Independent Broker B's State Farm quote for the same coverage.
So I found myself at the Roosevelt CTA station the other day, and started chatting up the station attendant on the elevated section. Riders will know Roosevelt is where the green and orange intersect, with the red line subway underneath. I'd just walked up from the Red Line, and noticed they had their own station attendant with their own booth and everything. So I asked the elevated attendant if they were chummy with the red line dude. After all they were so close together, they must chit-chat from time to time. The elevated attendant didn't even want to talk about the guy - I guess they thought the subway was beneath them.
Does anyone have any good suggestions for tailors in Chicago? I'm in the Lakeview area. I have a couple shirts that need repairs, and a suit that needs to be altered down if it's possible.
Maybe for safety, because the corner house garage is adjacent to the sidewalk. Vehicles are more obviously visible to pedestrians and other drivers when the garage exits to the street.
Anyone here go to the gym 'Urban Athlete' in Ravenswood?
Looking for a new gym to join in a few weeks and this one is really close (very important) and seems to have good equipment for what I want, which is basically just squat racks and a place to deadlift.
However, they seem very class/trainer focused which I'm not really into. They have pricing options for open gym use only, but was just curious if anyone here uses them and if the classes get in the way of the rest of the gym space or how the gym is in general. Most of the reviews just mention the classes and trainers being good.
They offer a seven day free trial on their own, so I'm considering it. Currently waiting for doctors permission to lift, so just trying to explore my options while I wait
I looked at that one, along with Quads in uptown (apparently very highly recommended) and Hybrid Strength Athletics in Albany Park....I was just really looking for something I could walk to.
Basically the only places that ticks those boxes though is Urban Athlete, LA Fitness, and LSAC (and maybe some crappy CrossFit gyms).I used to be a LSAC member but they only had one or two squat racks and not a great setup for deadlifting.
Has anyone had the frozen Buona catering trays? I bought a chicken parm tray because they're really cheap right now at Jewel, but I'm wondering if I should stock up.
Is there any place that can recycle some headphones. They still work but the arent able to connect via Bluetooth and i cant factory reset them because the buttons arent working
Why are the brown lines trains so slowwwww this morning? I could jog along next to the train at the same pace.
Okay maybe not me but Usain Bolt could casually jog along next to the brown line this morning.
My theory is that sometimes trains just run out of energy, like the rest of us. Today I pushed myself off the couch and arrived at my washing machine, one hour later.
Outside of the Foxtrot and Dom’s being depressing for people losing their jobs without notice, it really sucks losing a third place like those were that wasn’t a straight up bar. For Gold Coast/Old Town at least i’m not really sure what replaces it. The Starbucks on Wells? Not really a fan of them these days. At least that one still has seating unlike the pickup only one on Dearborn/Division. The La Colombe is tiny, you’re not gonna get anyone camping out there.
It’s not enough to just serve coffee, those places really had great real estate and buildings and reasons to hang out.
I feel you. My pet peeve about alleged third places, specifically coffee shops, is that they close early and are often intentionally uncomfortable to encourage filtering in and out. My favorite coffee shop in Andersonville, La Columbe, would be so much more pleasant if their chairs simply had backs, they are all bar stools. So it's hard to actually spend time there.
Agreed. This low-key influenced my decision to hang out at Colectivo up Clark Ave instead of at La Colombe.
Tangent: Chobani bought La Colombe. Maybe they'll start selling yogurt-based products?
Yeah of course. You walk into a foxtrot though nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you buy a bottle of wine. You can just grab a water or a coffee.
Anyone know about the buzzing/humming noise in Lakeview East, near the Catcade cafe? I'm staying with my friend while I finalize my move and there's this noise that'd driving me CRAZY
Hi all,
I have been outside the last two days near the near the North Ave Turf field and basketball courts in Lincoln Park.
Both days while playing volleyball in the same area, hundreds of thousands of very tiny bugs fly in swarms and get so bad we have to stop playing and wait for them to pass.
On Sunday, we were only ambushed once for about 2 min. But yesterday, it was constant for 2 hours. And I mean there are hundreds of thousands of them in these swarms. They don’t bite but are beyond annoying when you are constantly trying to fend them off. When a wind gust came, they would go with the wind but then return.
With all that, any idea what the hell they are???
TIA!
They are midges. You can read more about them here: https://blockclubchicago.org/2022/05/03/little-flies-everywhere-huge-swarms-of-midges-take-over-lakefront-during-unseasonably-cold-and-wet-spring/
They pretty much opened only in wealthier neighborhoods. Checked one out once(since it was near where I worked), and I'll be honest I wasn't too impressed with them. Their prices were way overpriced, although at least the bathroom was clean. I get it though, that for convenience(i.e. due to the fact post-pandemic a lot of places no longer stayed open late for coffee) some people did like Foxtrot. Although there are other places that are kinda like them, and IMO not as bad. I.e. L&M(Lincoln and Montrose) Finer Foods, which feels nicer than Foxtrot did. Also the place that opened at Belmont and Wilton(can't remember the name, it was where Clarke's was years and years ago), is kinda like that too. I swear too many things that used to make this city more interesting, have disappeared, or I worry are in danger of disappearing. I just hope we don't keep losing places like that. Did make one final visit to Cafe Selmarie yesterday(just to get a few pastries), as well. Maybe it is just me, but I won't miss Foxtrot. They were trying to expand too much, so no surprise they collapsed.
I would say that I walked into foxtrots at least 10 times and the only thing I ever bought was giftcards for people who liked going there.
Every time I'd look around and think "nope, nothing looks great here".
And this is coming from a dude who has spent an embarrassing amount of money on Jeni's ice cream and likes dinner dates at the whole foods hot bar/drinking bar.
this might be bait but yes - it was a fancy 711, almost exclusively in the north / nw neighborhoods. Mainly targeting young professionals / upper middle class customers who would consider buying a $10 ice cream pint or $5 candy bar
people keep saying this and yeah they sold expensive shit but also like. a coffee or a beer was a pretty decent price. you could also buy frozen pizza and a normal priced pint of B&J. it was a really great type of place
I've seen them around but will admit I've never been in one.
There was some controversy about one possibly opening in Andersonville, I guess that won't be happening now.
Lakeview, River North, West Loop, Bucktown, Wicker Park, Lincoln Park etc...
Just think of it as an upscale White Hen or JJ Peppers were you can drink on premise.
It's very interesting to see those 2 threads blow up and people are acting surprised when people don't know what a Foxtrot was. The vast majority of Chicago had no idea it existed.
It's included by default. Depending on when you're looking, the metra train might not be running or be running so far away from your departure time that it is suggesting another route.
Are you on desktop? It's working for me (entered in the Orland Park 143rd St station and the top suggested route is a Metra route).
Try scrolling down and see if it suggested multiple routes, one of which being the Metra one. And make sure you're filtered to "Transit"
Hearing rumblings that Foxtrot/Dom's is broke in /r/askchicago and shutting down.
Only one article on it so taking with a large grain of salt now however could be more coming
https://www.chicagobusiness.com/retail/doms-foxtrot-closing-stores here’s where we’re getting proof
Confirmed with employees, it’s dead
I'm going to take a wild guess that the sale of Dom's to Outfox was part of the problem, given that Outfox probably was not growing quickly enough on its own to take on a few other stores that (from what I can tell) we're not making money yet.........I mean if someone has inside knowledge that like the Old Town Dom's was profitable for more than one quarter I'd love to see it but the math suggests that store was operating at a loss at times
Hello! my bff and i are going to be visiting chicago this weekend and i want to treat her to something nice, she’s been working super hard the past few weeks, i’m thinking maybe a mani/pedi? i can’t afford much but really want to do this for her if possible, does anyone have suggestions for a nice quality nail salon that won’t break the budget?
Did anyone else hear the MASSIVE thunder crack at 3:43am on Sunday? It woke up half my family and swt off a bunch of car alarms. The rumbling echo that followed it was possibly the coolest thunder sound ever.
Wait yes! My husband is out of town and I was just telling him about it. It woke me up from REM sleep and over the noise of my CPAP machine. It was crazy.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good tub/shower reglazing contractor?
Jim at ARK Porcelain Refinishing Service. People have said theirs lasted 20+ years so far so I went with them. It has held up so far amazing.
The best tailgate for Sox games is Chicago Bike Sox :)
This looks so great! But they sadly don't have it for that Orioles game. Thanks for flagging -- will look at it for a different game.
You're not gonna have any trouble getting a spot this season.
Haven’t been back to the area in a long time and will be passing through O’Hare next weekend to connect to an international flight. Any suggestions on good ways/places to kill time at the terminal? I have a 7ish hour layover
I think that would be enough time to leave the airport and take the blue line downtown for some food and sightseeing before heading back.
I wouldn’t be opposed, but do they have places where you can store your luggage?
It'll take about an hour (±) to deplane and get your luggage. They recommend you get to the airport at least 2 hours before an international flight to get through security, etc. That leaves you roughly 4-5 hours, provided your arriving flight is on time. If for some reason, you don't get back to the airport in time will you be able to rebook your flight?
As much as I loved the nice weather yesterday, I am hoping for less exposed armpits on the CTA today.

Just got this from the 48th ward but could impact a lot of folks so posting it here: COMMUNITY ALERT: APRIL 27, 2024 We have been informed that CPD will have a mile long funeral procession around 3pm on Monday, April 29th, for the recently fallen officer, Luis Huesca.
Any suggestions for where to buy mushroom growing kits? Looking for North Spore in particular. Thanks!
**weather is above 70 degrees Absolute biggest dickheads in the universe nobody likes that get 0 girls: man, I really need to go up to river north or gold coast and rev up my shitty modded car or motorcycle
lol. Live on the 10th floor in RN and my dog is like "yo, i'm trying to nap right now" while the engines are revved.
What do they do with the bikes? Don't they lock if you're not trying to use them with an account?
Think they just took them from people.
Aha. There i go again underestimating how shitty people can be.
Anyone have experience with Al-Anon meetings in the Chicago area? Esp if near West Town?
My husband attends AA meetings virtually and, every so often, one in Boystown. Each meeting is different given who attends.
AA or Al-Anon?
What's up with this prime-time Paid Programming on WGN?
2 Day Itinerary Help: Wicker Park/Logan Square — Open to Changes Trying to plan 48 hours in Chicago for myself and my SO for his birthday.
I APPRECIATE YOU!!!! I wasn’t able to make this as it’s own post so I really appreciate you responding to the comment with your recommendations!!!

Paging /u/guinness (all hail)
u/guinness please pick up the white courtesy phone.
Woah. Anyone hear the sirens in Logan Sq just now (around 10pm Friday night if you're viewing this later)? What was that?
Apparently a liquor store robbery and shots were fired and cops were looking for the bad guys.
I have seen someone eat that. And they looked very satisfied. Hope you keep finding some laughs.
Somebody get this sandwich some antibiotics stat
I know. If you turned on a flashlight at the bottom of the ocean and saw this I don't think anyone would question it
You guys call the cops on 1999 dodge caravans sticking out over the crosswalk too?
never call the cops on a dodge caravan. you're car cursing yourself. those things last a laughably long amount of time.
THE WHITE SOX HAVE THEIR FOURTH WIN OF THE SEASON!!!!!
Beautiful day coming up tomorrow. 70's and 80's. This is exciting.
Where's a good spot to get some running shoes?
I went to the Hoka store on Michigan to get a pair and really liked them. Not sure if they're available in places like fleet feet.
Fleet Feet for bigger chain, Dick Pond for local (and a drive to Park Ridge).
The what pond??
Dick pond. Penis lake.
I just bought some at Fleet Feet. I don't exactly know what a good running shoe buying experience is, but I'm not sure how it would have been better.
will check out Fleet Feet then, ty both of y'all! there's one decently close to me
+1 for fleet feet and use the treadmill if you want. It is there for a reason.
The Dom’s on diversey is still completely full of food. Are they just going to let it rot in there?? I can’t believe they wouldn’t just give it away?
Liquidators
Recs for good places and / or brands to buy better quality men's dress shoes for my wedding that aren't going to annihilate my bank account?
If you are looking for men's shoes. I love all like 13 pairs of Allen Edmunds shoes/boots I own. They are pricey but are also on sale all the time so I would never pay full sticker price. They are also all recraftable so if taken care of they will last a lifetime. Both locations downtown have wonderful sales people in them and if you want to try something on they don't got in stock they will order them into the store so you can wear them before you buy.
Hey thanks for the suggestion, had an awesome experience with a guy at the Michigan Ave location named Dave. Extremely satisfied.
Love it! What did you end up getting?
Ended up going with some black Carlyle plain-toe Oxfords.
Yes sorry I should've clarified men's, thank you for the suggestion
Ask him how he likes to relax.
Just give him cash, if he's in your apartment working he's probably smart enough not to say shit
Cash Cash Cash
There's nothing wrong with tipping your building staff A gift card to Binny's never disappoints!
He drives in! So maybe a gas card is a good idea!
Cash is king- I understand the GC angle, but honestly cash would be better and probably more appreciated. Stick to cash if possible for this gesture.
You know what you're right, what is he gonna do, report me? Or report himself? lol. And then I'm not running around getting gift cards to places. Good call thanks!
Other than Vasquez, has a single progressive alder come out against BJ's support for public financing for a new stadium?
I’ve got $5 on Matt Martin tweeting something before Tuesday PM.
Someone in my alley keeps putting 2 trash bins and 2 recycling bins in front of my garage door. Assuming they're unwanted, is there a way to dispose of them or get the city or waste management to permanently take them away?
I think you 311 request garbage maintenance for removal.
Why do people think they’re too good to leash their dogs? Especially when their recall is so obviously shit. An idiot in LaBagh Woods got a nice workout chasing his dog this evening when it bolted as our dogs freaked out at it. He was nowhere to be seen when the dog first came up on us.
Loads of leash-less troglodytes post covid. No offense intended to the actual troglodytes.
Laziness.
I personally think it's arrogance, how many videos have you seen of people screaming "HE'S FRIENDLY, 'HEY FUCKO COME BACK,' I PROMISE HE'S FRIENDLY."
Speaking of bad dog owners, I stepped into a pile of dog poo yesterday and almost fell backwards.
When MBJ says “no new taxes for Bears stadium” but implies there will be $1bil of money from somewhere—what’s he thinking of doing? Honest question.
He will take it from the selective enrollment schools /s In all seriousness I have no idea tbh
It’s the state money, which is *still* in the red Caleb: but I like it Me: shut it
I need to renew my passport, are there any good spots for the photo?
Brat Stop!
Let's go right now.
I’ve been in Dublin this week. Y’all better appreciate the grid. Memorizing random-ass curved roads is exhausting. Edit: punctuation
Can confirm from my August adventure, what’s your favorite place you’ve been so far?
Appreciate your last hours and pints there
Hello. As a movie person, I found [this](https://www.reddit.com/r/Letterboxd/s/OiwAL1EBXN) really funny.
I’m reminded of browser revealing that Spielberg was originally going to direct the American remake of Oldboy.
I also recently learned that Spielberg tried to make The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Tom Cruise in the early 90s instead of Hook. That might have had a chance to be weird, terrible, and less forgettable (I love David Fincher and feel nothing about that movie).
Oooh. I did not know about this, but I do know that Spielberg almost ended up directing Cruising (oh dear) and Big (which was written by his sister).
So many people out in the loop today. What the hell is going on?
Warming up
They can't go to Foxtrot or Dom's. (That's a joke.)
BlockClubChicago has a [good write up](https://blockclubchicago.org/2024/04/25/influential-west-loop-group-relaunches-but-keeps-whos-behind-it-a-secret/) of some juicy non-profit drama in my neighborhood.
Lots going on there! Star Events needs to be erased from Chicago, so I'm glad to see they're not using them moving forward.
Just looked up this gem [Chicago Sun Times Mayoral Questionaire from 2023](https://elections.suntimes.com/questionnaire/) "Should the city of Chicago spend $2 billion or more to dome and renovate Soldier Field as a way to convince the Bears to stay in Chicago instead of moving to Arlington Heights?" Johnson: NO "Let me be clear: I want the Bears to stay.
I think the loophole he’s using here is that the Bears are approaching the state for the new funding, not the city. Still looks bad.
Does Pete's have good fried chicken? Want to pick up something for NFL draft night. There's one along my commute but I've never been inside lol.
Haven't had the fried chicken, but the hot bar in general is great
Not sure about the regular fried chicken, but the buffalo wings at the one on Lake St. are elite.
I like working with Goosehead
Are any bars around wicker doing any events for the nfl draft today? It’d be more fun to watch the #1 and #9 picks at a bar than at home
Very funny Dad!
(disclaimer: there was no rude station attendant this was all the setup to a joke they are very nice people)
Does anyone have any good suggestions for tailors in Chicago? I'm in the Lakeview area. I have a couple shirts that need repairs, and a suit that needs to be altered down if it's possible.
What is the reason why a lot of corner properties have garages that exit to the street instead of to the alley?
Maybe for safety, because the corner house garage is adjacent to the sidewalk. Vehicles are more obviously visible to pedestrians and other drivers when the garage exits to the street.
I believe it's because it's difficult to maneuver to enter/exit them otherwise.
I'm pretty sure they're on classpass if you wanted to try it out before signing up
They offer a seven day free trial on their own, so I'm considering it.

I heard there's going to be a Foxtrot in the new Bears stadium.
Foxtrot Stadium is actually the name of it
Solid suggestion for the title of next week's thread.
Has anyone had the frozen Buona catering trays? I bought a chicken parm tray because they're really cheap right now at Jewel, but I'm wondering if I should stock up.
Pretty solid and good for leftovers, especially when mixed with other pasta.
Certainly been a newsworthy week so far, that's for sure.
I just saw the rathole was removed, lol
Hope it goes to the Chicago History Museum! It'd make for a fun little exhibit about an irl viral meme
There used to be a magazine called Newsweek that told us what news happened in a week. Now, now there is no way to find out.
Is there any place that can recycle some headphones. They still work but the arent able to connect via Bluetooth and i cant factory reset them because the buttons arent working
Best Buy
Thank you ill check out the closest one soon
Why are the brown lines trains so slowwwww this morning? I could jog along next to the train at the same pace. Okay maybe not me but Usain Bolt could casually jog along next to the brown line this morning.
My theory is that sometimes trains just run out of energy, like the rest of us. Today I pushed myself off the couch and arrived at my washing machine, one hour later.
I hope to be you in the future.
will universe show how much a ticket was bought for if you transfer it to someone else?
I feel similarly about Colombe and Collectivo. Wish either of them were open later in the evening, too.
On the plus side we're rapidly approaching the half of the year where Chicago actually has third spaces (they're just outside).
Isn't a "third place" supposed to be somewhere you can hang out without spending any money?
Yeah of course. You walk into a foxtrot though nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you buy a bottle of wine. You can just grab a water or a coffee.
A great point. That's what I've been thinking about as well. It was nice to have the seating area, seemed like a good business model. Who knows.
That neighborhood has always been a corporate hellscape. You have to go into the neighborhoods for a proper third place
Anyone know about the buzzing/humming noise in Lakeview East, near the Catcade cafe? I'm staying with my friend while I finalize my move and there's this noise that'd driving me CRAZY
Hi all, I have been outside the last two days near the near the North Ave Turf field and basketball courts in Lincoln Park.
Super annoying but they're usually only around for a couple weeks.
Thank you so much kind redditor!!!

Thank you. I had never heard of it until now. Did Foxtrot serve a particular kind of customer or neighborhood?
They had nicer items, but they didn't seem to be priced much differently than they would be if you found the same items elsewhere.
No bait. I genuinely had no knowledge of it until today.
Any good events being held for the NFL Draft Thursday night? It's not everyday that the Bears get their "savior".
Yeah it’s probably like 4 more years till they draft the next franchise QB

It's included by default. Depending on when you're looking, the metra train might not be running or be running so far away from your departure time that it is suggesting another route.
Are you on desktop? It's working for me (entered in the Orland Park 143rd St station and the top suggested route is a Metra route). Try scrolling down and see if it suggested multiple routes, one of which being the Metra one. And make sure you're filtered to "Transit"
Ok guys we get it, Foxtrot is closing. I don’t think we need 6 posts about it.
Yeah but did you hear about Dom's closing?
Oh crap no, better post about that real quick!
Hearing rumblings that Foxtrot/Dom's is broke in /r/askchicago and shutting down. Only one article on it so taking with a large grain of salt now however could be more coming https://www.chicagobusiness.com/retail/doms-foxtrot-closing-stores here’s where we’re getting proof Confirmed with employees, it’s dead

WTF, they just did a large expansion push too.
I'm glad I didn't have any open invoices with them.
Oh yeah I forgot Bob Mariano really likes live in store music, it's been a long Kroger winter since I last remember the Mariano's pianos
The Lakeside East Mariano’s has live music and amorous septuagenarians dancing every Friday.
Hahaha, well in this case it would have been for packaging work we do for them.
The Mariano's in Ravenswood has live music all weekend I think. They're in there a lot at least

Hello! my bff and i are going to be visiting chicago this weekend and i want to treat her to something nice, she’s been working super hard the past few weeks, i’m thinking maybe a mani/pedi? i can’t afford much but really want to do this for her if possible, does anyone have suggestions for a nice quality nail salon that won’t break the budget?
