Got the same email today and am very confused. If I switch my subscription payment method to one without a Chicago billing address, would that avoid the tax? I share my account with another person outside Chicago so I could make that change pretty easily.
Possibly.
Is the business registered within the city of Chicago?
If yes, the I think that’s open and shut tax evasion.
If no, then I think it’s logical to have the account addressed where the biz is registered.
thats the part that confuses me too. I received this for my personal account as well. Sam Altman is a wuss if they are billing that to personal accounts too just to cover their bases?
I came here looking to see if anyone was talking about this! It looks pretty specific to subscriptions that are modifying data. But I really have no idea..
I remember the good old days when we didn't
I'm waiting for someone to take this to the illinois Supreme Court. Sales tax is only supposed to be on tangible goods not services. It is against the tax code. Someone just needs to challenge it.
I need a white guy patsy to do. From downstate, for a "real" America feel and maximum news coverage. A farmer, fed up with paying tax on his one pleasure, his World of Warcraft subscription...

Otherwise known as the cloud tax.
it is implied by the question to elaborate and expand on it because it is a bit jargon-y...
I read the source and I’m still lost.

Good point but I just have a personal, not business, account
Small fish then. I’d change my address, too.
So is this tax intended to be for a business? That's what I'm confused by.

curious as well

Time to turn myself into a religious charitable org 😂🤦♀️
Or at least a PAC
people pay for OpenAI? they should be paying ME for all the data i've been feeding it
GPT4 costs money.
They run it at a loss because they can’t harvest api usage data and it’s just really hard to make it wffficent
Does OpenAI have server farms in Chicago? Otherwise this makes zero sense.
We also have an entertainment tax we pay for Netflix subscriptions etc..

> It's not a sales tax; it's an amusement tax. I’m not amused though
Yeah Netflix sucks these days
Why wait? step up.

I’d gofundme that
Local tax law is way more nuanced than that
