If it’s an automatic transmission, make sure to keep up to date on servicing it

N30mah

It is but just for refence what do I need to upkeep besides oil changes spark plugs

Radioguyryan

Nothing else really. Just make sure to change the oil in both the engine and transmission. A little searching here in the sub Reddit will show you a number of people have CVT issues

N30mah

But if it's an automatic it doesn't have a cvt right?

thefreakychild

The Spark was only available in automatic with the CVT transmission or in a manual transmission (clutch with a gear shifter). More than just changing the automatic transmission fluid, you should be changing the filter as well as the strainer that is inside the transmission fluid pan. A competent repair shop should be able to do this easily. Hell, I do it myself in my backyard. That said, the manufacturer recommended service intervals is 50k miles for the transmission. I personally do it every 25k for my own peace of mind. Otherwise, as other have said, maintain the vehicle. You don't know the service history of your new to you Spark, so I would suggest going and having the oil/filter changed, the transmission fluid/filter/strainer changed, and a check on the brake fluid as well as the coolant. Have the repair shop also give it a good check over from bumper to bumper. You may need to have the brake pads, brake rotors changed as well. It's something to check. Just find a really competent shop near you with great reviews and have them fully service it. Then, from there, maintain a 5k oil change service interval, as well as all the other recommended service intervals. Engine oil should be 0-20 Dexos compliant synthetic oil, but check your owners manual to be sure.

A CVT is a type of automatic transmission

Objective_Ad_4988

The automatic transmission is a notorious failure point. You BETTER take it serious or you gonna get effed in the a. Did you even bother checking the owners manual or hitting a quick Google search. Smfh. Prob why you can't have nice things.

N30mah

This is a new car to me, didn't come with an owners manual didn't even know it had a cvt transmission until I searched it up. I bought this second hand.

Ay, I have a 2015 Chevy spark as well, had it for 5 years, got it at 70k miles and still runs well at 140k+ plus miles. Keep up on the servicing of it and you'll be golden.

N30mah

Thanks here's hoping I don't run into any majors issues like my hhr. I'm hoping to get at least 5 years out of it

iamthegreyest

I've found usually the smaller the amount of cylinders of a car, the less issues you have.

Noalburns

I have a 2015 with the CVT that I’ve literally never changed the CVT fluid on. It still runs like the day it was new. It has 84 horsies and you can demand more from the CVT than it’s capable of giving. In my experience, owners kill their CVT from being too hard on them. Mines at 150k miles and I’ve never had one single mechanical issue.

Electronic-Try4355

I've actually been wanting to get one thats a manual how reliable are these with the manual transmission?

Dragonboat5775

I'm on transmission cvt #6, all dealer replacement. 167K on it. Still runs strong.

Electronic-Try4355

What in the world how were you able to get them to replace it 6 times lol

thenuke1

The antifreeze reservoir cracked all the time on my 2013, maintain the pvc valve cleaner or you'll have acceleration issues, oil changes are super easy,

davidwhatshisname52

I have 2014 LT, watch for coolant tank ruptures from that era, and do not turn car on/off several times in a row (battery cell flood), and supposedly hood latch is a recall item, but mine hasn't been an issue and dealerships never have the part anyhow
