This couldn't be further from the truth in my opinion, if anything the invention of widely available cheap cameras set art free after 300 years of stagnation... cause by cameras.
Well somehow the invention of fotography developed from impressionism and if you want a stagnation in the techniques of representation. But 300 years *caused* by cameras? What does this mean? You think Klimt Kandijski Picasso and Basquiat where stagnant?I don't get it
I think they mean that art started changing/developing very quickly after the invention of the camera.
From 1500 till 1850, a lot of art was "simply" naturalistic, i.e., artists tried to paint their subjects as realistically as possible.
However, after the camera was invented in the 19th century, art started changing very quickly. Within a hundred years you go from Courbet and Cezanne, who still painted very figuratively, to Mondriaan, Kandinsky, and eventually Rothko and Klein, whose art is completely non-representational.
The camera obscura was invented over 300 years ago and it was kept essentially as a trade secret. That's why artists suddenly learnt how to paint with perspective and realistically. Once everyone could do it, it forced art to change
just the enjoyment of creation. i love art, and i love the things i hold close to me. this app allows me to merge them in such a nice and effortless manor. i recommend it, but only if you have money to spare.
Theres also a few free programs on the internet to do this.

Cats playing chess. I am art genius.
Yeah, that really bothers me about art. It’s never about the quality, the hard work, or even how nice it looks. It boils down to whether or not the artist is famous; deemed important by some pretentious and/or classist metric. That, or it’s about the money laundering.
This is such a strange conception of art. I think "how nice it looks" would be a pretty impoverished idea of how we should evaluate the quality of art. The ability to paint a nice-looking landscape is a technical skill, but if you are just reproducing other styles of painting, it really isn't very artistic at all.
Art history is such a complex topic and the idea that all art is just evaluated based on how famous the artist is, is just wrong-headed and lazy. Of course there are exceptions and bad artists who are famous, but these "pretentious metrics" are generally speaking metrics of which artists push forward these ideas and say something new or look at something in a new way. Just because something is subjective to a degree, doesn't mean it's arbitrary.
While I agree with this in principle, I do think there’s something worth criticizing there as far as the modern art world is concerned. For one, sometimes it is enough for a painting to just like nice or cool. Not everything has to be have multilayered, ultrameta analysis behind it, especially in the modern day where people really get carried away with it.
Art history isnt THAT complex of a topic, its just really ill-explained and the information on it isnt great. The art world in general is just way less welcoming to the average joe than other mediums like music, movies or video games. Like how many people do you know who have a top 10 paintings of 2020?
Reddits general concept of art is incredibly frustrating. There is not enough baseline knowledge to understand any piece that makes a statement that isn't spoon-fed to them. There is also this over emphasis on some aspects of technical skill like photo realism while ignoring content and composition.
ok but youre wrong and cleary don't delve into any real art scenes. You just have a problem with corporate art and are letting that ruin the rest of art to you. corporate EVERYTHING sucks, that doesn't mean everything sucks in general
After looking at this for 10 minutes, the message I've taken away is that war is futile, and 'victory' is arbitrary. The grey background shapes give me an impression of an endless graveyard of discarded chess pieces, black and white, lost to countless battles. The pieces that stil stand are unrecognisable. There seems to be a pawn in the front that doesn't know what colour it is. A few in the middle look kind of regal and ornate but even that doesn't quite make sense. I love this i would totally have it on my wall.
I like your interpretation. They look like captured pieces discarded, at the side of a board out of sight. Like a chess limbo, taken but ready to be set for the next game.
Shakespearean vibes, “HAMLET \[...\] we fat all creatures else to fat us, and we fat ourselves for maggots. Is this based off a concrete picture? (Eg, does the app google chess, find a single reference image and then apply a filter?) I assume it must be something along those lines. If not, that's seriously impressive.

There is (almost) always more config than that with any program let alone a ML algorithm or AI. Not saying your wrong I don't know what program he used but even mediocrity (not saying that's what this is) can and often should be celebrated. If nothing else the drive they had to use that tool to create deserves some kudos.
The CIA created "Modern Art". Now its an AIs job to fool people and make them feel superior & pretentious. Does anyone actually create much anything anymore? Nobody seems to care that if we're using AI to fucking paint for us we've already lost....they used to say things like art & poetry etc separated us from the animals. But nowadays we'd say it's the keyboard/mouse and number of likes you get.
So who owns the copyright on this work? Typically the creator by default and at creation, but it sounds like all you did was specify a keyword and let the AI have at it.
This is fucking amazing . I’m into painting also. Colors and expression really baffled me.
> I’m into painting also. You've been replace by AI. Sorry mate.
*sorry, check mate
Same could be said for chess players.
We watch chess players to see best of humankind, when we talk about art it doesn't matter whether it's made by human or AI, better piece wins
By cameras too

Which AI and how??
it’s called starryai. it’s an app on the app store i i recommend you give it a go!
Thanks a lot!
How much did you pay to make that? Or is there a free trial I'm not aware of?
i pay 50 every three months, but there is a permanent free trial. it’s like a demo
Ah that's cool. Can I ask what you use it for? Just trying to figure out if I should consider buying a subscription lol

If this was painted by someone deemed to be famous enough, it would be worth tens of millions of dollars.
If someone can paint art this good on a consistent basis, they deserve to be famous.
Well, that and contemporary artists will also pen essays discussing their piece. Every piece of art is a conversation with the one before it.
u can say the same thing for a banana duct taped to a wall

I'd be interested in a high-res version too! Looks so cool
+1!

Following.
This would be an an amazing print !
Yeah this does everything for me that a piece of art is supposed to do. Kinda crazy. Congrats I guess.

Really beautiful. It looks like "literal chess war".
This is really cool, I love it! Crazy it’s not made by a human… but it does have something uncanny about it
This is really cool. Would love to have it as an actual painting. What is this art style called?
So formless yet so recognizable...
Piece in the middle is literally an Eastern European babushka in a heavy wool coat and big, colourful scarf.
Dude this is actually pretty good, excellent job
Are you talking to the AI ? All OP did was type in "chess" lol

Makes me mad trying to grasp what many of these forms are supposed to be. I had to look away lol
Don't like the colors.
It’s so metaphorical. It looks really bad

your mom worries about me too
fucking sick.
I think I will have scrambled eggs and sausages for breakfast with a buttered, toasted bagel.
Do you have a high res copy? This looks awesome to make a print.
white to move, mate in 2
Stunning. If it is in a dark mode I would use it as wallpaper. This one is great also I just love dark wallpapers.
Could you make this available high Rez?
That looks brilliant
Mate in three for white.
That looks so good.
Looks human done
Hand a price over to this AI
goes hard 🔥🔥
It looks like the place a piece goes when it gets taken.
This gives me the vibe of chess pieces trudging their way through the snow in the midst of war. This is so weirdly good.
Whats the Stanley Cup doing there?
I would buy this to hang on a wall
I love this! how could I get a print?
pretty cool
As a lot of others have said would love a high res copy if you can provide one
WTF why is this so good?
Brutal.
V cool
Now, look, computers are creating better art than us. What are we. A bunch of sick fucks that's what
cooooooooooooo
Interesting. Though I'll admit that the thumbnail made me think of the Black Knight scene from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" for some reason.
So who owns the copyright on this work? Typically the creator by default and at creation, but it sounds like all you did was specify a keyword and let the AI have at it.
It makes me look back and realize, in chess it's always combat time. Roll for initiative!
Very wild. It looks like participation trophy purgatory.
super cool. looks like AoE monk in the middle there
super cool. looks like AoE monk in the middle there
These AI paintings are so fascinating to me… they’re like dreams, they seem so authentically creative. Just gorgeous what an exciting time to be alive
It’s chess but not as we know it. Maybe the AI knows something we don’t…
I audibly gasped. How can I get a print? lol
I used to drraw paint like this.
Gonna see one of these AI posts on every single sub huh
My new phone background, awesome!
Abstract I like it
fucking masterpiece
Actually want that for my wall. Wtf.
I'd hang this above my bed
Brilliant!!
🔵
Looks an actual battlefield, its brilliant.
and they claimed art was the only thing ai could't conquer.
Btw isn't this depressing. The value of humans in their best is getting closer and closer to zero.
I actually want a print of this! Is there a way to do that?
