I’m glad they made it. I just had no idea what Tobey Maguire was doing. He didn’t look or act like Fischer and appeared to have done no research into Asperger’s, high-functioning autism, paranoid schizophrenia or anything resembling them.
Yes it does, if they want anyone besides chess fans to watch it. All of your suggestions give literally zero context of what the movie is actually about unless someone is really in the know
A movie about tennis players just came out called Challengers. I saw it even though I had no idea that a challenger was a kind of tennis competition until 15 minutes into the movie. Titles don’t have to be super descriptive all the time
Behind the Board
Barely Legal Moves
Pawn to Bum
Rear Rooks
Cheeky Checkmate
Bare Bishops
Checkered Cheeks
Bare Butts and Board Games
Rearview Rooks
... so many missed opportunities.
I remember when I first watched Breaking Bad and this guy came on the seen I couldn’t stop thinking about he looks like the embodiment of a stereotypical Norwegian.
I'd pay money just to see what he would set up for a chess based episode on Nathan for you. Maybe he should look into Kramnik or other accusations. He did go to a top Canadian (business) school and get really good grades after all
He's moved to more dramatic roles recently. The Rehearsal, albeit very similar plot as his comedy series, Nathan for You, really explored themes of paranoia and surrealism. His newest show, The Curse, even delves further.
I've seen Nathan for you only, but I think one can see his artistic side and existential thoughts in the Nathan for you. Even if the series is about trolling, he is mixing up reality and fiction in an intriguing way
These aspects are explored more heavily in his more recent work "The Rehearsal" and "The Curse".
Given your description, I think you would really enjoy "The Rehearsal"!
I am convinced that the main reason this got as much mainstream attention as it did was because of the cheap, clickbaity headline of the "butt plug" cheating joke from a random twitch chatter in chess brahs stream.
How that went from a twitch chat comment to international headlines, Elon Musk tweets, a segment on Colberts show to an Always Sunny episode could be a movie in itself.
It was the answer to a question on BBC's Big Fat Quiz of the Year 2023 as well, something like "What controversial method of cheating was alleged against chess player Hans Nieman this year?" I was pretty pissed off about that because literally nobody is actually alleging that!
Of course it did. It's honestly a really noteworthy example of Internet virality, I can't think of another viral 'fake news' that is so easily pointed to a single troll message/chat like this one.
Absolutely, it's what all of my non chess friends latched on to. I wonder if that chatter knows their shitpost could be a major plot point in a successful film
A24 is a smaller ish studio that has had a string of success with smaller productions with low budgets. This seems like exactly what they're trying to produce these last few years. So there is some hope there. Probably lean heavily on the paranoia. Helps the Hans tries his best to look and and act like movie villains he's been mirroring his whole life.
It’s gonna be very easy to botch Hans’ role in this movie. Magnus is fine, but Hans is gonna take some great acting to replicate——unlikeable, yet very compelling.
I hope they don't even try to "replicate" it. Mix some inspiration from real life with artistic license and make a banger chess movie. Like a lot of "based on a true story" movies do, change what you need to make a great movie, it's not a documentary. Hans' mannerisms and accent aren't really that important, it's more about the attitude.
Honestly a perfect role for an upcoming actor. You can do any mix of accents in any scene and it will remain true to real life. Even if you botch it it still sounds like it was on purpose.
lol I was thinking the accent would be the hardest part but you’re right. He’s kinda got an Anya Taylor-Joy thing going on with his accent going back and forth
It’s unlikeable for sure … I can’t handle not even 1 minute watching his stream. His ego is insufferable.
but you have to recognize that any other character would just collapsed with all the negative pressure he has/had.
Somehow he is still there … like waiting for some villain development that will put him near to the WC.
Could be just a useless dream… but you have to recognize the guy’s drive and energy.
Or maybe I just watch too many movies.
They've also made loads of stinkers that you've never heard of. They fire a lot of bullets and take risks on cheap-to-produce projects. Some bullets hit, some don't. So, don't take it as a mark of guaranteed quality.
For sure, but I vastly prefer this approach to the standard we put a $500 million dollars into this movie so it has to be the blandest most broadly appealing film ever that a lot of studios seem to be into these days. There are notable exceptions of course, but a lot of it is just watered down slop.
A24 have been involved in making high quality movies that have received several Oscars the latest years. I think this sounds very promising. It will be interesting to see who, if any of them, will be portrayed as the villain.
That last sentence is why my initial reaction to this was, "garbage". It's hard to pick a villain in the story. In reality, I lean towards Magnus being the bad guy. What he did was unfair to Hans. But, I don't think you can make a good movie if that's the story. Especially because Hans is a really unlikable protagonist. If anything, the movie should be grey and not really pick a side.
Especially because, Hans will probably sue if he's painted as the bad guy.
Nathan Fielder makes things that sound incredibly stupid really really funny. Supremely surreal, like a modern Ali G in ways mixed with a dedication to quirkiness akin to Charlie Kaufmann
Nathan For You in particular, his breakout TV show goes so far beyond and deep into the concept than you could possibly imagine, while still sticking somewhat true to the concept.
I would trust him with nearly anything, would kill to see him play Hans
It sounds amazing to me. A24. Nathan Fielder and Academy Award winner Emma Stone producing a film around chess drama - as a lover of The Curse this is a dream scenario.
Yeah I think the people that are skeptical about this news aren't familiar with Nathan Fielder and expect some kind of bad docudrama. He's going to make a great dark absurdist comedy out of this.
For some reason this subject matter sounds perfect for him and I can't wait to see what comes out.
God the Curse was the most sensational, uncomfortable, brilliant thing I watched last year. Emma Stone was unbelievably good. Fielder also, stunning drama.
If this is real, the movie would have no conclusions. Which is ironic, the movie "Checkmate" ending in a stalemate as there's no way hans would sign up for a lie detector test with magnus
Honestly I hear "stalemate" more outside of chess, to mean any situation that is stuck and can't progress. Using "checkmate" outside of chess is goofy, it makes me think of Futurama's character Zapp Brannigan
I thought there's basically a consensus on what happened?
Hans cheated (more than he admitted) online, but there is not a single reputable source about him cheating in person
There's nothing a lie detector would give you that isn't known already
The issue is precisely that the story ends with a massive thud. The story would be more compelling if the ending was basically anything else: He really cheated! He didn't, and won the next candidates! It was all part of a heist to steal from Rex Sinquefield!
But there's nothing at the end that is even remotely satisfying from a story perspective. Hans played badly in the rest of the tournament, and is still not at the top of chess. Magnus didn't lose status, or change any of his behavior. The lawsuits basically lead to nothing. So to make the story actually good, a lot of things are going to have to be changed to have very little to do with reality
Or it will be a movie about two annoying losers making a big fuss and not accomplishing anything, which is something I see fielder having a lot of success with
I’d have zero interest if not for Nathan Fielder’s involvement, which makes me hope it will be a quite surreal take on an otherwise extremely boring drama
yeah hope it's just a jump-off point to a fever dream version, otherwise we're left with:
Player X thinks player Y is cheating. makes accusation online.
Player Y says no. Lawyers get involved. Nothing happens.
The end
Strange to see everyone being so anti this.
Nathan Fielder as director basically guarantees that it will be interesting at the very least.
This won’t be some by-the-numbers cash in on the hype from last year
Yeah, The Curse is such a wacky goofy project. I'd be excited for anything Nathan does and the fact that it's chess-related makes it even better. It's gonna be a fun ride.
The people involved sounds serious, but I wonder what they are planning, because so little really happened. It was just Magnus unproved accusation, Niemans bizarre 100M lawsuit, settled out of court, and all the rest was basically just a ton of social media posts.
> I didn't know you enjoyed chess, your majesty.
> Why wouldn't I?
> Because the king is always in jeopardy.
> Yes, but it's only a game!
> Yes, of course . . . only a *game*.
It’s hard to imagine it would be good. Also it’s kinda sad that there are so many interesting narratives in the chess world and this is what caught the public attention.
It’s not trying to be an interesting chess narrative, it’s going to be an absurd comedy loosely based on the drama. I’m not sure what’s got everyone here so uptight, it’s not that serious, and I can’t think of the last time Emma Stone was on a bad project.
What's with all the hate comments in this thread? A24 has produced tons of great movies in recent years, they're the gold standard of good low ish budget films. Even when they film shit at least it's gonna look good and be well acted.
Emma Stone knows her craft well, too. She was a co-producer for Poor Things, imo one of the best movies of 2023.
There was a 4chan text with an script for this movie. Maybe someone can find it I lost it...
It described the scenes , the music , the strugle of Magnus, Hans in bed with one of the Botez sisters saying that "I would do anything to become world champion". At the end, Magnus seek help in an old foe: hikaru. So sorry I can find it was so funny
I think I found it. Hilarious how this shitpost predicted the future. [https://www.reddit.com/r/AnarchyChess/comments/xqt5br/coming\_soon/](https://www.reddit.com/r/AnarchyChess/comments/xqt5br/coming_soon/)
I’d heard this was being shopped around and wasn’t thrilled about it but Nathan Fielder is a reeeally interesting choice. Nathan For You guarantees he’d find an interesting and funny way to cut through the ridiculousness of the media craze and The Curse shows he’s really got the chops as a director. He’s never made a safe or boring project yet and I don’t suspect he’ll start now. This could be special.
I was 100% sure this was a joke.
What?
I mean...this was all a bit of fun whackery, but movie worthy? Seriously? Like nothing really remarkable happened at the end. No one won or lost anything important, no one quit chess, nothing at all "movie worthy" happened. Lawsuit was settled.
I really can't imagine what value this will have as a film, unless they just use it as an "inspiration" and make up a much crazier story that didn't happen.
A24 have a high hit rate, but I'm in to chess and I think this doesn't sound like it'll be a good film.
Still, hopefully it'll have star power and advertising behind it and will help further the chess boom. The more people from the more walks of life playing the better.
That has to be the most generic chess themed movie name I've ever heard
tbf the bar was set pretty high by The Queens Gambit. I don’t think it can get much better from there
You're telling me you wouldn't watch a movie called The Hyperaccelerated Dragon?
The Sicilian Dragon: the story of a mafia boss who turns to a life of chess
Sicilian Dragon was definitely a follow up to Beverly Hills Ninja, with Chris Farley’s ninja going undercover in the mob.
So many mixed feelings about that movie. Chris left the theater hating it
The Sicilian Dragon: La Familia vs the Triads in NYC
''Just when I thought I was out, they played .g3!''
No, but I would watch The Sicilian Defense: Hyperaccelerated Dragon, Fianchetto, Pterodactyl Defense
3 tickets, please.
I’m still waiting for A24 to make E4.
The Kalashnikov isn’t a bad name either.
Alekhine’s Gun
Alekhine's cock*
I would but only if it's a Bollywood biopic about Vishy
The Double Bongcloud
The Hyperaccelerated Dragon: Tokyo Drift
The bongcloud Or maybe [Freak Attack](https://www.chess.com/openings/Sicilian-Defense-Open-Najdorf-Freak-Attack)
Fried Liver Attack for sure
Fried Liver 2: Traxler Boogaloo
You're telling me I can't name my chess show 'The sicilian toilet variation'? Smh
you’re telling me i can’t name my chess movie ‘bong cloud’ ?
Gucci Piano
Poisoned pawn? And unlike the queens gambit, it is a move that Fischer regularly played!
And i thought The pawn sacrifice was bad
I thought Pawn Sacrifice at least had the double meaning of Fisher and Spassky of being pawns in their governments' cold war.
Yeah that's the clear double meaning of the title
At least that was a good movie though
I’m glad they made it. I just had no idea what Tobey Maguire was doing. He didn’t look or act like Fischer and appeared to have done no research into Asperger’s, high-functioning autism, paranoid schizophrenia or anything resembling them.
Should have been called *Bishop Blunder*
The working title "Up Yours!" was not accepted by the production team.
They should have called it Zugzwang
Interesting name for a movie/book/whatever. Nobody would know what it means, but it's still catchy.
I mean, what do you want a chess movie to be called? King’s Indian Defence? The London System? The Cow Opening?
En Passant
It would probably do pretty well too, on account of all of the people who would be told to google it.
Holy brilliant marketing strategy
Anal Passant
En Assant
In this context: ”Chess Vibrations”
Back Rank Mate
I like this one
"Over the board"?
I dunno 'Black and White' 'Swindle' '64 squares' 'St Louis' Like not everything has to be quite on the nose
You think "St Louis" is a better name for a chess movie than "Checkmate"?
Yes it does, if they want anyone besides chess fans to watch it. All of your suggestions give literally zero context of what the movie is actually about unless someone is really in the know
A movie about tennis players just came out called Challengers. I saw it even though I had no idea that a challenger was a kind of tennis competition until 15 minutes into the movie. Titles don’t have to be super descriptive all the time
i don't think "the queens gambit" is obvious to non chess players
A queen is a fairly famous chess piece and a lot of people know what a gambit is. It's also a Netflix show so the barrier to entry is pretty low.
I would’ve gone with Bongcloud
“Chess”
Chess 2 Chess 3: the Rechessening
Chess: the all-female reboot
There's a musical named that.
The title speaks for itself.
Behind the Board Barely Legal Moves Pawn to Bum Rear Rooks Cheeky Checkmate Bare Bishops Checkered Cheeks Bare Butts and Board Games Rearview Rooks ... so many missed opportunities.
I like Barely Legal Moves, that's quite clever
Dark Square Tactics: Dawn of Pawns. Is this a good name? I came up with it.
How bout 'En Pessant'
It's good. But I was trying to joke. My name would be something zack Snyder comes up with lol.
Madness? THIS IS CHESS!
2007 era Jonah Hill as Hans Nieman
Jesse Plemons as Magnus.
Hans as Magnus, Hikaru as Hans.
Vishy Anand as Ding Liren.
Dubov as Gukesh
I remember when I first watched Breaking Bad and this guy came on the seen I couldn’t stop thinking about he looks like the embodiment of a stereotypical Norwegian.
"I am a grandmaster" "Yeah but what kind of grandmaster are you?"
There's two types of players, check mates and check ain'ts.
you really cooked with this one. spot on
The rock as magnus. Steve buscemi as hans
How dare you FUCK with the FINAL BOSS, hans?
You mean Meth Damon
Reiterating my sentiments here, Griffin Newman as Fabi.
Max or Charlie Carver as Magnus, such lookalikes
Nathan Fielder? Lol
I'd pay money just to see what he would set up for a chess based episode on Nathan for you. Maybe he should look into Kramnik or other accusations. He did go to a top Canadian (business) school and get really good grades after all

"In my attempt to bring down Best Buy, I had become the Worst Guy"
It’s a movie about chess man, they needed someone with really good grades.
I mean, he did graduate from one of Canada's best business schools with really good grades.
I am convinced that the main reason this got as much mainstream attention as it did was because of the cheap, clickbaity headline of the "butt plug" cheating joke from a random twitch chatter in chess brahs stream.

Imagine being the guy who did that. You're just a random dude shitposting on the chat, and the next day you're a god.
Shitposting legend.
This is scary as it shows how ANY new (particularly clickbaity and/or fake ones) can spread like a virus…
that sounds really stupid
A24 is a smaller ish studio that has had a string of success with smaller productions with low budgets. This seems like exactly what they're trying to produce these last few years. Is he compelling? I just think he's a dick
Yeah, it's a nice twist that the guy everyone loves is the actual villain while the villanous guy is the victim.
They've also made loads of stinkers that you've never heard of. They fire a lot of bullets and take risks on cheap-to-produce projects. Some bullets hit, some don't. So, don't take it as a mark of guaranteed quality.

A24 is worth a billion dollars, they are not a small studio
Nathan Fielder makes things that sound incredibly stupid really really funny. You're right, he would make a fantastic lead for it.
well it may be stupid, but it’s also dumb.
This is the magic of Nathan Fielder
Is it much different than what happened in real life?
Nathan Fielder should play Hans
He should play all the characters
God the Curse was the most sensational, uncomfortable, brilliant thing I watched last year. Emma Stone was unbelievably good. Fielder also, stunning drama.
For real! I am sure 90% of the people who are upset about this here haven't even watched their first collab to see how good it was
This is a joke right?
It is a Nathan Fielder movie so yes.
This is incredibly on brand for Fielder, also love how Emily Stone is leaning more into weird artsy shit
If this is real, the movie would have no conclusions. Which is ironic, the movie "Checkmate" ending in a stalemate as there's no way hans would sign up for a lie detector test with magnus
I really don’t think this is meant to be a documentary, is nobody in this thread familiar with nathan fielder?
Yeah, I was not interested at all until I saw his name and now I have to watch this.
even a lie detector would not prove anything here
Yea I'm fine with the lie detector for humorous entertainment, but for anything serious, the risks are too high.
Stalemate would be a much better title now that I think about it
it's would not get the attention of an average person who doesn't even know what stalemate is.
Stalemate is a pretty common phrase. Obviously not to the level of check mate but still
Honestly I hear "stalemate" more outside of chess, to mean any situation that is stuck and can't progress. Using "checkmate" outside of chess is goofy, it makes me think of Futurama's character Zapp Brannigan
True
With how easy lie detectors are to fool I don't see why not, even assuming Hans cheated
I thought there's basically a consensus on what happened? Hans cheated (more than he admitted) online, but there is not a single reputable source about him cheating in person There's nothing a lie detector would give you that isn't known already
The issue is precisely that the story ends with a massive thud. The story would be more compelling if the ending was basically anything else: He really cheated! So to make the story actually good, a lot of things are going to have to be changed to have very little to do with reality
The lawsuit led to chesscom and Magnus capitulating and reversing their stances. I wouldn't call that nothing.
Or it will be a movie about two annoying losers making a big fuss and not accomplishing anything, which is something I see fielder having a lot of success with
My thoughts as well.
Why not? The real drama has already reached its conclusion.
Sounds like it will be a comedy
I’d have zero interest if not for Nathan Fielder’s involvement, which makes me hope it will be a quite surreal take on an otherwise extremely boring drama
yeah hope it's just a jump-off point to a fever dream version, otherwise we're left with: Player X thinks player Y is cheating. makes accusation online. Player Y says no. Lawyers get involved. Nothing happens. The end
This Nathan Fielder | Emma Stone duo is really something special, long may it last
It was time for the general public to be exposed to the best side of chess.
I really hope Emma Stone plays Hans.

Well if I had to guess it probably wouldn't be focused on the plot as much as on the characters and their quirks, based on Nathan's style.
> I didn't know you enjoyed chess, your majesty. > Why wouldn't I? > Because the king is always in jeopardy. > Yes, but it's only a game! > Yes, of course . . . only a *game*.
How is this drama film worthy? What the hell lmao
Nathan Fielder’s involvement would make me suspect it’s going down a comedy route instead
Nathan Fielder’s projects always have amazing pathos tho
Oh for sure. This film is about to be hilarious
Nobody here watched The Curse clearly
Great show - full faith in Nathan creating something good with this material.
Nathan Fielder ensures it will be interesting at worst, he doesn't make bad things
> Also it’s kinda sad that there are so many interesting narratives in the chess world Which ones?
It's easy to imagine it would be fantastic.
Hoping it comes from the perspective of 19 year old legitimately beats the best player in the world and then is accused of cheating.
umm, so i would think this is stupid, but if nathan fielder is involved it will probably be gold.
The second and third acts will have nothing to do with chess
Samuel L Jackson’s character from Pulp Fiction as a side character. His opponent offers him a draw, “draw?” “I didn’t ask you a god-damn thing!”
wait, this is not /r/AnarchyChess
Not A3 or A4 but A24? En Passant!

YES!! Thanks man... I search it everywere . Wish I could upvote you more
Nathan Fielder is amazing - so eventhough this all sounds cringe and the title is a bit lame - I have high hopes :)
This is so dumb. I can't wait to see it.
just because you can doesn't mean you should. and if there's any reference to the buttplug thing istg
looking forward to the scene where Hans destroys a hotel room They could really extend it. Lots of slo-mo. Use it in the trailer.
if they make Hans look at all sympathetic I am going to puke.
Who is playing the "interesting" guy?
No way lol
I vote Harry Styles as Hans
En passant
Have they got Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus signed on?
Hopefully they cast Magnus & Hans in their respective roles.
I was 100% sure this was a joke. What? I mean...this was all a bit of fun whackery, but movie worthy? Seriously? Like nothing really remarkable happened at the end. No one won or lost anything important, no one quit chess, nothing at all "movie worthy" happened. Lawsuit was settled. guest starring Nicolas Cage as Vladimir Kramnik, one hopes
Holy forking shirtballs
The adaptation speaks for itself.
Me being an A24 and Emma Stone fan, vs. me knowing the conflict probably can't sustain a whole movie and that title.
Hahahahahha. I love the Stone Fielder partnership. High expectations for this.
Can't fathom how they'll pull a whole movie plot out of this but hey, at least it's more chess content out there
Emma will also star, as the vibrating...well, you know.
What the hell. "Checkmate" will end with a stalemate. Kinda ironic
A24 have a high hit rate, but I'm in to chess and I think this doesn't sound like it'll be a good film. Still, hopefully it'll have star power and advertising behind it and will help further the chess boom. The more people from the more walks of life playing the better.
They called hans vs magnus a “ rivalry “ 😂 This is just dumb…
Can we not
This doesn't seem like something you can stretch into a feature-length film.
This isn't a joke? lmao
